Immerse yourself in the village and architecture that partially inspired the Studio Ghibli film “Spirited Away”. 十份 Shifen Station/Old Street offers an excellent blend of Taiwanese culture, breathtaking scenery, photo worthy experiences and delicious food. Partaking in the wish lantern tradition is a great way to experience Taiwanese culture in addition to making a memorable photo/video op. Aside from the food stalls and souvenir shops, Shifen Waterfall, another inspiration for the aforementioned film, is a 5 min drive or 15 min walk away.

It's very touristy, but it's definitely a unique location. You can walk right along the tracks, freely crossing back and forth, browsing the stores and enjoying the different yummy snacks, watching people release lanterns on the tracks and contending with the calls of promoters wanting you to do the same. It's fun when the trains come by, too, every hour or so. I don't regret coming here.

Nothing to see. All tourist. The street is very short too. Not much shops there. The only thing you can do here is to fly a lantern. Or walk 30 minutes to see the waterfall nearby, which is literally nothing too. Not say it’s not nice, but there are other better waterfalls or streets you could have visited. Don’t waste your time here.

This has got to be one of the most vibrant spots during the whole trip. Situated next to a rail way, it’s made even more interesting once in a while when trains pass through this quaint little town. Try the stuffed chicken wings at NTD70 a piece which could satiate any hungry tummy. To add, try also the chicken meat roll for NTD45 a piece of a juicy take on common oriental rolls.

If you are wondering if this is the place for sky lantern release...Yes! Cost is around 150 for single color and 200 for four colors and the shop owners will usually help to snap still shots and videos of the lantern release! Also, the Shifen waterfall is about half an hour walk from here...so be prepared to have an umbrella at least to shield u from the scorching sun during the walk down..it's worth it..

The old town is full of Chinese style, the roads are surrounded by mountains and hills, and you can move the train directly to the old town. The food is diverse and there are many interesting things waiting for you to discover, release the sky lanterns, go for a walk, and check in... It is said that this place is allowed to release sky lanterns because of its special position that can control the flight of the lights. and collect them after they fall.

A charming escape with sky lanterns! Shifen Old Street is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Taipei. The unique atmosphere of the old street with the train tracks running through it is unlike anything I've ever seen before. The highlight, of course, is releasing sky lanterns, which is a magical experience. I also enjoyed browsing the shops and trying the local food. Overall, a delightful and memorable experience!

Was brought here by our driver after visiting the shifen waterfall as it is very near. Our driver recommended us to check out the hot air lantern and I'm so glad he did. It was a gorgeous sight seeing the lanterns fly up. The old street is lined along the side of a railway track. There are shops selling the hot air lantern where you can write your wishes on and the staff will assist you in photo/video taking and lighting it up to fly. There are also food stalls and souvenir shops. You can light your lantern on the railway track when the train is not using it. And once the train is ready to move everyone runs up onto the street and watches the train pass by in their face. Would recommend to check this place out for the experience and fun of it

Located in Pingxi District New Taipei City... Not that far from Taipei itself but the road condition a bit challenging for some people. Famous of flying lantern on day light and its Railroad tracks. Culture streets that suitable to visit by tourist where you may enjoy not only some souvenirs shopping also DIY programs.... Flying lantern. This is over of To do list for me when you are visiting Taiwan. The place is so cultural and very beautiful with oriental decorations. Beautiful waterfalls and river across the area give you fresh air and amazing ambiance. Get proper guide to be here and you will know its worth to visit this place

Set off your eco-friendly sky lantern here on the railway track. Buy your souvenirs here instead of shops over the waterfalls. Make sure you eat the chicken wings with rice stuffed inside as well as the ice cream roll!

Not really a fan of the sky lantern release activity — too much of a fire hazard from my point of view. Having said so, that’s literally the only activity to do in town as a tourist, so I’d consider avoiding it if you’re not into it. Shops sell the same souvenirs all over and that’s about it. I’d say it was the least enjoyable activity of the day trip

This place is very cool. Fireworks can be bought along the train tracks and you can set off at the bridge. Make sure you go early to paint your lantern as the area closes up early. Last train is after 8pm, so I suggest your there by 6pm latest time to enjoy the area

It is a small cluster of shops located beside a disused set of train tracks. People go there to set off lanterns. There is not a really good time to go there, probably at night to get the full effects of the lanterns being launched. We went there in the late afternoon when there were still a lot of people there launching their lanterns. You can go to any shop providing that service, or if you are there with a tour group, your tour guide would probably assist you with that. There is a shop selling roast chicken wings recommended by our tour guide, but we did not ry it because it was not halal.

One of the key destinations to visit when you come to Taiwan. One of the more popular place to release sky lanterns into the sky. Prices are NT$150 for plain coloured lanterns and NT$200 for multi coloured ones, there are many sellers and they come with explanations on what the different colours mean.

Beautiful place to visit. Very easy to get the train here from Taipei and explore the local market and open rail tracks. Make a lantern wish and set it off in the sky before taking a stroll to the Shifen waterfall. Really enjoyed visiting this place. Very authentic and some great street food as always in Taiwan.

Unique experience watching lots of lanterns being released... We wrote messages and wishes on the lanterns before releasing them. When a train approaches, the people would move away from the tracks. This old street is not very big, just 2 rows of shop with the railway in between. However, it was fun to visit here and watch people releasing lanterns or just visit the shops. Some lanterns caught fire but others drifted high into the sky.... A peace place in Taipei... 😊😊😊

I love this place! Lots of souvenirs to buy those that are like good luck charm with the sky lantern design. The food there is nice too! Tried something new I have never had it in my country, I wish I can learn it and maybe open a business here. Nice rails to take photos with and also did try putting up sky lantern, although it is in day time but it is still fun to do so!

Really a tourist place. Overrated. It's just a 100m stretch of area with stalls along the railway track that sells lantern where tourists will write their well wishes and light the lantern to be floated away into the sky and the heavens will 'receive' the wishes. Lanterns are sold at 200TWD and above. There are other forms of lantern souvenirs like magnet, charms, night light, etc. A lot of stalls selling this and they will call out to you to get it from their stall. Some food shops selling taiwanese sausage, taiwanese ice-cream crepe.

Shifen Old Street is a must-visit destination for anyone in Taiwan. The highlight of the visit is the opportunity to release sky lanterns, which was a magical experience. The street itself was charming, with plenty of local street food and souvenirs to purchase. The train tracks running through the center of the street added to the unique atmosphere. The waterfall was also a beautiful and peaceful spot to visit. It's a perfect place for a day trip, great for family and friends. Overall, I highly recommend a visit to Shifen Old Street for an authentic and memorable experience.

If you're looking to make your wishes come true, I recommend trying their sky lantern experience. You can write down your wishes on the lantern and watch them ascend to the sky, bringing hope and fulfillment. The single-colour lantern is priced at TWD 200, multi colour at TWD 300 and they even offer assistance in taking photos on our mobile devices, ensuring lasting memories of the occasion. Additionally, they have a selection of delicious street food available. The pork and chicken sausages are particularly mouthwatering and pair perfectly with the refreshing bitter gourd carrot honey fruit juice.

Must see to light and send up your wishes. This place was so remote a long time ago this was a way to let others know they needed help. Now a tourist trap, but fun. Just down the road is the waterfall too. I like the suspension bridges. Watch out for the train and is another way to this place since driving and parking are hard. Try to get a driver, taxi, for the day.

Old railroad line surrounded by food stalls and lantern shops. People buy and write on their lanterns then light them up on the railroad. Quite interesting for the 1st visit, not so much for 2nd visit. There is a train station at the end and also a suspension bridge. Nothing amazing but everything is well kept.

Came here with the intention of capturing Ghibly scenes and live in that moments. You’ll definitely have lots of beautiful photos here and memories as well. It’s raining quite a bit on the day we came but quickly stopped when we reach to the top so we still can take pictures with clouds and it looks even better. Around here also have restaurants, coffee shops and tea shops for you to buy souvenirs.

Shifen Old Street offers a truly enchanting experience. This picturesque spot is not only steeped in history but also provides a unique activity - releasing sky lanterns. Writing our wishes on the lanterns and watching them float gracefully into the sky was a magical and unforgettable moment. The street's vibrant atmosphere, combined with this traditional activity, creates a sense of wonder and connection to Taiwanese culture. A must-do experience for anyone visiting Taiwan!

Cool place with a meaningful tradition that reminds of the past. We went on a Tuesday afternoon with a Klook tour. It was crowded but not to the extend that you needed to wait long for anything. I think it would be also very nice in the evening as the lantern and the lights would be on We didn’t go for a lantern thing because we thing it is not environmentally good. However we like the town and the vibes there. But somehow the beautiful place got turned into a tourist exploitation area with the narrative to propose their wishes. Shops seem to have just commercialized souvenirs. Regarding the food, I would recommend to get any food in Taiwan somewhere else as it is most likely cheaper and better tasting.

This is an interesting and exciting attraction to see and experience. Here, you can buy and set your own lanterns into the sky. Unfortunately, we saw many lanterns falling into the mountains and water, which means it isn't environmentally friendly at all. But never the less it is an attraction to see the different street foods, souvenir shops, and more. The chicken stuffed with rice is a must try there. Also, the taiwanese ice cream with peanuts wrap. If you are lucky, there's an active train that goes their the area. This doesn't require a ticket to enter the area. We went with a tour which included the area.

Very cute and quaint village, but absolutely overrun with tourists - you cannot walk around easily, you have to push through crowds. Because the train cuts right through the city, the only footpaths are two narrow sidewalks along the main stretch. I admittedly visited during Chinese New Year, but it seems like any day of the week would also be too packed.

Very historical location in Taiwan. This this unique train station has shops right next to the tracks and yes a train actually passes by while you shop. There main selling item is a man made hot air balloon, that you create and drawn on and send to the sky. Also just a short walking distance is the waterfall and bridge, but due to the lack of water there isn't a waterfall.

Sky lantern and the old railway is the best part of this place. Remind me of childhood times, must visit if you are in Taiwan.

    Sky lantern. Make a wish...

  • 5/5 Joel L. 1 year ago on Google
You'd probably pay money and write your wishes on a lantern to let it fly. Its an experience best not to miss. It'll be a memorable experience; esp when you'll be helped to take pictures and videos of the group you're with.

Beautiful old town, quite a hike to get here, but easily found if you take the train. Prepare to quite literally drive through the center of town on the way. Buy mini paper lanterns to take home or decorate one to set loose right in the center of town. Plenty of food and shopping and a quick walk to the waterfall walk. Highly recommended!

A fun place for the family to draw on the lantern with your wishes and release for them to come true. A very good experience for the family.

  • 5/5 Wilson F. 1 year ago on Google
Great place to release the hot air lanterns that carry your best wishes for health, wealth and happiness up into the sky. I hear there are special teams that hunt down these lanterns after the fuel burns out and they land somewhere. More eco friendly but not a lot of fun compared with us launching the lanterns.

Good place to pay a visit. An activity that must do is to release the sky lantern on the railway. There are many shops there, where you can buy local snacks and drinks. If you are lucky, you will see the old train pass by. Remember to wave to the passengers!

Undoubtedly one of the most interesting tourist attractions I’d been to, Shifen Old Street is a short stretch with a railway where trains actually pass. The most known activity here is lighting up sky lanterns with your personally written wishes and messages. About 80% of the materials were recycled from old lanterns. There are shops where you can buy novelty items and snacks. Went here on a cloudy hour, so the raw photos weren’t as striking as I expected them to be.

There are lots of shops selling lanterns and food by the side of the railway. The train doesn't seem to operate here as there were lots of people on the railroad. Lanterns cost around 200 NTD and you can whatever you want to write for 4 sides (good to have 4 friends) before they assemble the sheets for you before you fly it. The lanterns are made of plastic. I am not sure about how they retrieve the fallen down lanterns from the nature, looks environmentally unfriendly but was a good experience. The area has less food options compared to other Old Streets. This is mainly for lanterns, souvenirs and photographing.

Old train tracks, simple station and old diesel train - this first impression when i disembarked. The old street lies parallel to the simple train track. There is barely a secure barrier stopping toursits from stopping onto the tracks. It is a hot spot for setting lanterns into the sky. Traditionally, people used write their wishes onto the lantern. Then, fire was set a simple fuel and the lantern was set free into the mid-air. It is how people make wishes.

The place where you light up a huge lantern and let it fly away in the sky putting all your wishes/messages you want to paint in the lantern. It is at the same time a railway. Nice to pay a visit as it is usually part of the tour

I visited this place with my daughter, 2 sisters and our friend. It was quite a hot day so we decided to just walk near the train tracks and not go to the nearby hanging bridge. At food stalls, we first bought the Peanut Ice cream roll😍 it was so delicious and refreshing that we ordered 3 in a row. We also bought Xiao long BAO , stuffed chicken wings and chicken sausage. For the drinks,we had fresh watermelon juice. The flying lantern experience was also a memorable one since we got to write a lot of our wishes on all 4 sides of the paper lantern. The locals were very accommodating and helpful , they were really good at taking our pictures and the video of us holding on to the lantern before it flew😁

The Sky Lantern process is impressive and enchanting. I was mesmerized by the skill and expertise surrounding the affair. We went during the pouring rain, which did not put a damper on the occasion. I did not find a moment where I did not want to photograph the fantastic things happening around me. I recommend going and would go so far as to say a trip to Taiwan is incomplete without visiting Shifen.

I first saw this place on an advertisement, and decided to visit it by myself. I was not disappointed. The experience is really unique. The street is really small and can be packed during peak hours. The parking areas are spacious but you do need to walk some distance to get to the street. If you take the train, the route is a bit complicated and time consuming, but the view you can see during your journey is worth the time. After you’ve arrived, the sole activity here is the lantern. It costs NT$250 for me (4 colours) and I get to keep a polaroid photo of me releasing the lamp, or an extra NT$30 for each additional polaroid picture. They also have some souvenir stores and some snacks to purchase (I love the chicken stand right outside the train station’s entrance/exit), but other than that, nothing else. There is a beautiful waterfall nearby, and it’s not that difficult to go as well, although you have to go by foot. There is also an old bridge with amazing view nearby, but beware if you’re afraid of heights. I heard from locals that many people dislike the place and the activity because it’s not exactly environmental friendly. I haven’t researched much about this, but if you are someone who is concern and believe in this topic, research first before your visit.

Cute little downtown area with the train running through the center. Loads of great street food. The peanut ice cream crepe is worth the trip alone! Get it with parsley, yes parsley. Somehow the ice cream, peanuts, parsley and crepe work 😋 all for $50NT

Shi fun train station with a hanging bridge traverse over both side of the small traditional village full of snack and souvenirs. The signature is to wrote your wishes on the lanterns and let them float up the sky. Lanterns are priced at 200nt each and 250 plus for multiple colors. Each color represent a category or wish.

Beautiful place to be at. Recommend you to light up your Sky Lanterns here cause you will definitely get good pics out of it. And the walk to Shifen Waterfall is around 30-40mins one way. So it will take around an hour for the return trip. It's not a far walk actually, so don't get cheated by taking an expensive bike.

See plastic/paper lanterns float up the sky. Some get blown into the mountains some land back to the area if there's no wind. Not sure what's so fun about it other than superstitious. Train goes through the street and that's part of the fun. A few eateries offer a rest from all the madness.

It’s very crowded but fun and worth it. There were several shops offering the sky lantern so the wait is not too long. There were also lots of food stalls for quick bites. Toilets are available in the selected shops. The train passes through this area which is makes it exciting. Good experience

It takes about 2 hrs to get here by train from Taipei. Less than a few dollars. You can also book with a tour group. Uber taxi is not that expensive either and it takes about 45 minutes. As soon as you step off the train there's a public bathroom straight ahead. A few feet away you will pass some street food vendors. The first thing I saw and had to get was the sticky rice stuffed in boneless chicken wing and basted in bbq sauce. I wish had ordered more than 1. It was so tasty. It's really hot so give it some time to cool down. Further along there's street vendors selling fruit shakes, souvenirs and ice cream. Opposite of these vendors is where you can buy a giant lantern and write your wishes on and set it into the sky. We opted out of it. We did see someone's lantern go up and get stuck in the top corner of a building and it caught fire. Please reconsider it if it's something you want to do. We saw other lanterns end up in other parts of the town and in the river.

Great experience! The lantern experience is the highlight of the place. The place is so beautiful and full of stores. I love how they maintained the traditional atmosphere of the place. I wish I could stay longer.

Little town with characters. Just need half day to roam around this town. People or tourist releasing lanterns was the highlight for me. Came during public holiday and it was really packed with people plus at that time they had to close certain outbound route due to a train incident. It took hours for us to leave the town using train. Regardless it was a fun town.
