Beautiful museum filled with stunning paintings of Old Florida landscapes. (Ask one of the volunteers about some of the history of A.E. Backus if you get a chance!) You can buy a print or souvenir from the shop inside!

A.E. Backus museum & gallery is a small, nostalgic art museum that displays the art of Fort Pierce native, A.E. Backus and the highwaymen. Backus was born in 1906 and is known for his realistic scenes of Florida. He is considered a pioneer of Florida landscape art, and inspired many other artist to emulate his work. Additionally, he played a significant role in teaching some of the artists that became known as the Florida highwaymen. The Florida Highwaymen were African-American artist who painted beautiful, unique and brightly colored untouched Florida landscape between the 1950s and 1980s. The museum is located in Fort Pierce, right off A1A and near the Indian River inlet and other tourist sites. The museum is little but very well laid out and beautifully kept. It has a art shop and the admission fee is only $5.00. AAA, seniors and vets receive a discount of 2.00 dollars. The staff is very cordial and provide a detailed explanation of Backus and his history. A wonderful place to visit if you love oil and canvas art of scenic Florida.

It's a small but very lovely museum. It appears to be well run. The paintings are beautiful. The gift shop is very nice. I had never heard of Backus, but he was an accomplished artist and a great man. He's no longer among the living. I wish I could have met him while he was! We'll definitely be back to the Backus, and as a member, I look forward to attending events there.

An educational trip into one of Florida's history of art development. I love this place. This world could learn a lot from the way Mr. Backus lived, loved, helped and inspired those around him. I'm glad I got a chance to hear people that new him speak of him through video. RIP to Mr Backus, a son of Stuart Florida's history in art, one of the most humble/ thoughtful people this world has lost.❤

A MUST SEE! This museum has a small entry fee but is free for active Military. PAY THE FEE if you have to, it's worth it. Very well laid out, great collection of early Florida Highwayman and a wonderful Chronological collection of Backus works without being over whelming. The photo contest you get to vote for was a fun experience. Wonderful museum to see what Florida's great artists can produce. Glad we made the visit.

AE Backus Museum not only shows Backus art, but also shows local art. They currently are showing Highwaymen art. An inexpensive museum to visit with only a few visitors most of the time. We visit periodically because the displays are changed.

Original art by Beanie Backus and "The Highwaymen" the men he taught to paint. Whom sold their works, many in homemade wooden frames, up and down US Highway 1, thus receiving the name Hifhwaymen. View what "The Treasure Coast's landscapes and sea acapes looked like to the artists. The musuem is quiet, clean, small enough to visit in an hour or large enough to enjoy art for a lifetime. A MUST DO visit in St Lucie County. Plus located directly on the Indian River next door to the Manatee Center ($2.00 entrance fee) and the the Chamber of Conference, there is plenty to see including the river and the boats.

WoW! This is such a gorgeous gallery! I loved everything about this place. It is currently hosting an Outstanding Photography Show and is the home of the most incredible Highwaymen Art Collection. The staff is wonderful and the gift shop is stocked with stunning artisan jewelry and beautiful art books and gifts.

Was a great experience even tho we were there years and years ago when it was smaller and not improved. The one person working there was very welcoming, knowledgeable and the place was extremely neat and clean as well as the rest rooms. We purchased a cup with a painting on it. We very much enjoyed all that we saw and also noted that they will be putting in additional exhibits. Outside the little park near the boats was lovely as well. An excellent experience.

We went on Sunday as it was the last day of the annual Highwaymen Weekend. The walls were loaded with privately owned paintings not typically seen. The Executive Director gave a wonderful presentation on their technique, business and relationship with Bean Backus. The movie in the gallery is a must as it adds contemporary interviews with artists who have passed away. Bean's art is more complex and reflects his long career and travels throughout the Caribbean and somewhat reminiscent of Winslow Homer. His work is less of a "dreamscape" than the Highwaymen, perhaps due to his formal training. The obligatory gift shop was short on books about the Highwaymen but long on knickknacks. All in all, a worthwhile visit. Even if you are just heading to South Florida, you should make time for this delightful museum.
