Kololi
is
a
great
place
to
base
yourself
if
you're
visiting
The
Gambia.
The
resort
itself
is
set
in
large
open
grounds
and
the
front
is
directly
by
the
beach
so
you
can
walk
on
the
sand
and
swim
in
the
warm
Atlantic
Ocean.
The
staff
are
generally
very
obliging
and
efficient
and
always
happy
to
give
and
receive
a
cheerful
greeting.
The
food
in
the
restaurant
is
pretty
good.
I
suggest
avoiding
the
"breakfast
included"
deal
as
the
choice
is
limited
and
if
you
want
more
than
1
coffee
(which
is
very
good)
you
pay
for
it.
There
is
entertainment
most
nights,
which
varies
from
really
good
to
very
forgettable.
There
are
3
pools,
although
one
is
small
and
another
reserved
for
people
in
The
Springs
block.
We
stayed
in
the
Stones
block,
which
isn't
so
good.
The
shower/WC
room
is
small
and
a
bit
slapdash.
Our
shower
wasn't
properly
finished
off.
It's
quite
a
walk
from
the
Stones
to
the
restaurant,
but
that's
ok
(but
beware
of
falling
coconuts
from
the
palm
trees
overhanging
the
path).
One
thing
people
need
to
be
mindful
of
is
being
begged
for
money
by
local
guys
who
engage
you
in
friendly
conversation.
Some
of
these
guys
do
this
for
a
living
so
are
very
good
at
it.
It's
annoying
and
harassing.
It
puts
you
off
going
out
as
you
have
to
run
a
gauntlet
of
these
guys
on
the
streets
and
the
beaches.
Also
there
are
some
genuinely
friendly
people
who
just
want
to
greet
you
without
asking
for
money
so
it's
hard
to
adopt
a
blanket
policy
of
ignoring
locals
for
fear
of
offending
the
genuinely
friendly
people.
I
get
why
these
guys
do
this.
Jobs
are
hard
to
come
by
in
The
Gambia
and
the
median
wage
is
£187
per
month,
however,
it's
annoying
to
engage
with
someone
in
a
friendly
way
and
then
having
to
firmly
refuse
pleas
for
cash.
The
unaware
could
easily
lose
a
few
thousand
Dalasi
(77
Dalasi
to
£1
at
time
of
writing)
on
the
short
walk
from
Kololi
Beach
Resort
to
the
Sengambia
Strip,
which
is
where
most
of
the
restaurants
and
bars
are
located.
Transport
depends
on
taxis,
which
can
be
expensive
if
you
don't
know
how
things
go
in
The
Gambia.
They're
also
often
mobile
wrecks
(not
all,
but
it's
very,
very
common)
that
would
have
to
be
scrapped
in
many
countries.
That
said,
you
really
should
travel
around
The
Gambia,
which
is
a
fascinating
place.
If
you
intend
to
do
so
I
would
recommend
using
a
guy
named
Lamin
Sankareh,
who
drives
an
unmistakable
bright
green
Daihatsu
jeep
with
an
open
back
so
you
can
sit
enjoying
the
fresh
air
whilst
taking
pictures
and
videos
of
what
you
see
as
you
drive
to
places
such
as
Banjul
and
Jungle/Paradise
beach.
As
well
as
being
a
good,
reliable
driver
Lamin
is
a
knowledgeable
guide.
He
showed
us
around
the
Albert
Market
in
Banjul
after
driving
us
there,
and
his
company
meant
that
we
didn't
attract
the
attention
of
those
guys
who
hassle
you
for
money.
You
can
find
Lamin
outside
El
Sol
restaurant
close
to
Kololi
Beach
Resort.
Just
look
for
the
bright
green
Daihatsu
jeep.
