Returned from Sunset Key cottages a few days ago, and I’m left feeling disappointed. Yes, the island is great. Very quiet with amazing views, sizable cottage. The service needs much improvement from start to finish. We left with $300 of resort credit that no employee reminded us of. We were completely unaware. We were 3 black women traveling and multiple times employees assumed we were only visiting and not staying on the island (which is probably why they asked for our card and not charged to our available resort credit). In addition, I booked this trip months ago. About a month before the stay I checked the sunset key website to learn that there was a promotion with discounted plus resort credit. I called to update it, but someone from the resort should have notified me. And then we only got to use $200 of the credit because we didn’t charge the cottage, completely unaware we had $300 left. Service at the beach was extremely slow. We were ignored many times while we watched others be served. Overall a beautiful place but I expect better service for the amount I paid.

Didn’t have a good experience here. The property is very nice, it has a white sand beach and it is 7 min away in boat from key west which is nice. Problem is that staff is inconsistent and there’s a lack of end to end training. For example: 1. My card was rejected, someone called me and left a voicemail. I called back and nobody knew that person. They had me on hold for about 5 min. Had to call the manager who solved the issue. 2. One day we wanted dinner, the kitchen was going to close in 15 min. The hostess simply decided to ignore us and we had to call the manager who gave registered our order. 3. Service at the pool was not friendly enough for a 5 star hotel. 4. When we departed the people that helps with the bags are not properly trained and not friendly enough. If this was a hotel with a price of $300-$500 per night it would be nice but for the price I expect perfection. The only exceptional service came from an island ambassador called Jas. Hope everyone was like him.

This is my new favorite place. From the initial greeting as you disembark one of their private ferries to the cute cottages; morning goodie baskets; amazing staff, drinks and lunch at the pool bar; afternoon ice cream cart and dinner and service at Latitudes, everything is just perfect. Sunset Key is the best of both worlds. When you have had your fill of the energy, crowds and noise of Key West, hop on the private ferry for a short ride over to a tranquil paradise. I will be back, don't change a thing!

Pros: Quiet island which was great to get away from key west and felt very safe at night. Very spacious rooms and the staff were always friendly and accommodating. It was very family friendly and the treats were awesome from local businesses in the Keys. Cons: Room wasn’t very clean at check in. There was dust and beer bottle caps in the room. There was also lots of ants and sugar ants upon check in on the coffee table, bathroom sink, and kitchen. Our toilet stopped flushing on day 2. house keeping always came around 3-4pm but when we handed over our trash bag they just left it outside. We talked to other vacationers staying there with similar issues. We wouldn’t stay here again.

Cannot recommend this place highly enough! If you want Key West, but low key and bougee, this is your place! It’s pricey but worth every penny. Personally I wouldn’t splurge on bringing my kids here but for a romantic getaway, YES! The grounds are impeccable and the staff is so attentive. Room drops of breakfast baskets and also champagne and cheese plate for our anniversary was so nice. Dinner at Lattitudes was delicious, by far our best meal in the Keys! Run tasting is fun and Smithers the bartender is so friendly and we enjoyed talking to her about the local hot spots. I can’t imagine being disappointed in this place. We stayed two nights in our week in the keys and I am so happy we did!!

There is no doubt that the Sunset Key cottages is one of my favorite places to go. A few minutes on a ferry ride and you arrive at the most peaceful place surrounded by wonderful personnel that greets you with a smile. A special mention for Jassy who was waiting for us once we got off the ferry. The restaurant Latitudes: great ambiance but the food could be better. I am not saying it was bad but we ate dinner at another restaurant in Key West and that food was outstanding (can't mention the name here). But….I have to add: the key lime pie they have is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! You must try it. The cottage is very comfortable, but it needs an update. The bathroom had a tub/shower that did not work too well. The spout for the tub would move around (poorly secured to the wall) every time we used the diverter on it. It also did not divert the water 100% from the spout to the shower head. It was a cheap system in the first place. The enamel steel tub was patched up in a couple of places where it had chipped (picture attached). The correct way to fix chips is to resurface the entire tub, not do a patch work. The shower curtain should be updated to a glass enclosure. We are in the plumbing fixture business so we notice these things immediately. My wife designs bathrooms and kitchens for large and small projects so we know when something is dated and needs a "face lift". While maintaining the shabby chic decor, the cottages need an update in the bathroom area. Maybe other guests would not notice these things, but we do. The Nespresso coffee was of course excellent (we use that brand in our home), but the condiments were subpar (saccharine, sugar and cream in capsules). At the prices they charge (over $1,000/day) we expect not only refrigerated milk, but coconut milk, almond milk, every possible milk, stevia, splenda, etc. (I associate saccharin and cream in capsules with cheap motels off I-95). The bread they delivered the first morning was dry and not very good. The second day they delivered croissants and they were much better. They used to deliver these wonderful, warm muffins and different types of fresh bread. What happened to that? The lounge chairs around the pool also need to be updated. They are starting to look aged. Tennis courts: pickle ball is all the rage now. Convert at least one tennis court into two pickle ball courts and you will get a lot of additional bookings. It's currently the fastest growing sport in the country. Other than these suggestions, the place is wonderful, peaceful, friendly staff. Let's make it even better!!

We came on the boat for breakfast. The key lime pancakes were wonderful. The fried pork belly was a cold rectangular log with the consistency of Pâté.

Wonderful, secluded experience. This place is done first class. Don't miss breakfast!

I can't begin to express how amazing a place this is. First I need to say that we received this vacation through Make-a-Wish for our special needs son. The staff made sure we were comfortable and helped us with our every needs. They were amazing and friendly. Our children explored the island and felt safe knowing that any staff member would help them get back to the cottage. Three breakfast baskets and evening drink and treats basket were always on time and delivered with care. The gym was small but functional. Our cottage was wheelchair accessible and had two rooms and 3 bathrooms. It was clean and comfortable, when we had an issue with the dishwasher they sent someone immediately and when he couldn't fix it, it was replaced right there on the spot with a brand new one. Thank you Steven and Nara for the help and pointers on things to do. Steven recommended the butterfly conservatory experience and it did not disappoint. This was an experience we will never forget, as I write this review my son is telling his Aunt on the phone all about his stay. Thank you Sunset Key Cottages staff for an undeniably amazing stay and amazing memories.

This is a great place if all you want to do is an mostly isolated beach. The beach is right next to the cottages, the ocean is warm and mostly calm, no mosquitos. There is also a pool (though why do you need that when there is an ocean?) The ocean on the beach is "wild", we saw a nurse shark, a manatee jumped out of the water in front of us, all sorts of fish come by you as well, if you snorkel, must be a boon. The beach could be accessed by others, but they need to pay for access, so that really limits the crowd and most of the unpleasant types. The beach also has food service, chairs and towels and such. The cottages are a bit cramped, but pretty fine other than the big problem. The kitchen in ours was overrun by ants and a couple of pest control visits did not really help. We also saw a cockroach on our last day. The service is somewhat sloppy, they tend to forget their tools in random places, randomly forget refilling on soap and such. The bittles with the shampoos are semi hard plastic, so sometimes it's hard to extract. My wife complained that the cotton round pads included are bad, hard and scratchy at the edges. Since it is on an island, you have to either dine on premises or take a boat to the key west. The lattitudes restaurant is pretty decent, but if you are staying for a while, it gets stale fast, so definitely explore other options on-shore if you can. Again since it's an island other services require planning. E.g. if you have an emergency, plan for at least 20 minutes for a fire department boat to arrive to help transport you to the ambulance. So definitely avoid having any heart attacks and other such things. Don't fall, don't break any bones and so on. If you are at risk of needing quick medical service, definitely consider staying elsewhere. Concierge staff are great and try to accommodate you as best as they can for the most part. There are great turndown and morning baskets with pastries, orange juice and pretty nice chocolates. For other activities - get a list of approved boats from the front desk and you could be picked up right from the island for various private boat trips. We definitely plan to return again, even though the experience was somewhat marred for us.

Great customer service from Helena and Francesca. They really made our trip! The grounds have amazing landscaping. You have to take a private ferry back and forth, which can take some time waiting for the ferry and riding over to the island. The rooms are okay, some of the furniture and technology are very outdated but they work. If something is broken, engineering will come fix it immediately. The spa and restaurant hit the mark. The pool is amazing. The private beach is outstanding. If you want to be secluded from the main island of Key West, this is the place for you. There are so many perks it seems impossible to know of all of them.

Restaurant high priced and over cooked the swordfish. Party barge managed to get between me and the last quarter of a perfect sunset. Missed the perfect shot.

We never want to stay anywhere else while visiting Key West💗 The island is beautiful with lush landscape, very helpful staff, excellent food choices and the cottages are just perfect! Can't wait to visit again 🥰

This was our second time visiting and we had the most amazing stay. The property is beyond beautiful with the best sunsets every night. The staff was phenomenal. A special shout-out to Jas who welcomed us and checked on us throughout our stay, and Thomas who served us at the bar all week. Thomas was so pleasant and went out of his way to make us drinks just the way we liked them. He even whipped up some special frozen drinks for our 3 year olds. The staff really goes above and beyond here and that is what makes it such a special place. The ice cream man came to the pool daily at 3pm and our toddlers looked forward to it every day. They also loved the morning deliveries of fruit, yogurt, croissants and muffins and the evening chocolates. It just made it so fun! The resort is quiet and romantic, but we also felt comfortable and welcomed bringing 4 young children with us everywhere, which was much appreciated. The food at Latitudes is amazing and we had a hard time venturing off of the island because we loved everything on Sunset Key so much! We have been visiting key west for many years, but there is no place like Sunset Key! We hope to come back every year!

By far the best hotel I've ever stayed at. The creature comforts, such as the daily goody baskets, added so much to the service and atmosphere. Absolutely loved my stay.

I'm a travel agent that only makes money through the commissions paid by a supplier/resort. I booked Sunset Key Cottages for a family that travelled 6+ months ago and have yet to receive the very substantial commission owed me. I have attempted to contact the property directly on many occasions through both phone and e-mail and have never received a response. Both my voice mails and e-mails go unanswered. I will certainly never recommend nor book this property again.

The place is beautiful and I would come back again, but not for longer than a day. Unfortunately the cottages were riddled with problems. I had multiple doors broken that looked like someone broke in and would not function properly including the front door, bedroom doors, and bathroom doors with broken door handles, cracked doors, and doors that don’t even close. There are an over abundance of sugar ants all over the house despite us being delayed from getting our cottage “because it’s currently being cleaned”. It got so bad we had to be given a temporary cottage because for some reason there was a massive sugar ant infestation in our cottage which doesn’t make sense if it was supposedly cleaned. The new cottage we had didn’t even have a switch for the food dispenser in the sink so it smelled so horrible. There were also random bugs in our cottages including me finding a millipede in my shower and flies in the cottage. I shouldn’t need to check my entire cottage for bugs when simple cleaning would have dealt with all that. I was very afraid of finding something in my bed because of all this. Lots of dust was in my cottage all over the place too. The supposed Wi-Fi appeared to be down with no instructions on even attempting to try getting Wi-Fi without having to walk to the main desk in awful heat and ask about it only to be told it doesn’t work right now. The over dependence on room service to get us things instead of something like a mini local supermarket isn’t very enjoyable. As for the good stuff about this: the staff was very friendly, I liked seeing the nature being taken care of, the place looks amazing, the food at the restaurant is great, the neighbours are very friendly including giving us gifts, and the pool is nice. I would come back again just not for any longer than a day due to the poor cleanliness and physical home architecture of this place.

Overall, my stay was pretty good. I was happy with the food and the gift baskets everyday. What I was not happy about was the lack of housekeeping service. My trash was not emptied at all for my 3 night stay and our beds were never made.

So beyond thrilled we stayed here! Close to everything yet feels like a hidden, secret tropical garden. Exceptional service! So much better than any resort, even upscale resorts, we've stayed at! Adults only keeps things peaceful.

The island is beautiful. A lot of people working/maintaining the property. The noise from the grass cutting and leaf blowing was loud and distracting. Arrival: Easy check-in. For the $$ we spent it would have been nice to have our bags brought to our room. Pool: Thomas at the pool bar was great! The food was good, too. There were always enough chairs. Beach: it was very windy on the island. The beach/ocean is rocky so we decided to just stay by the pool. Cottage: Two bedroom cottage beach front. Amazing views. Bed was comfortable and nice bedroom space. Small kitchen with everything you need. You can order food/snacks/drinks ahead of time to be delivered to your room.
