This was my first time staying in a bed and breakfast but certainly not my last. This is a beautiful and the staff was so nice and accommodating, even with my travel issues I experienced. I stayed in the papaya room which was so cute and cozy, the perfect room for a solo trip. I didn’t get to enjoy the outside areas as all the seating was pulled due to the storm rolling in (to be expected) but I look forward to experiencing it in all its glory, very soon. Breakfast was delicious and the whole vibe of the property is chill! This will definitely be a regular spot to stay at when I’m in Key West!! Can’t wait to experience one of the other rooms soon! Thank you to the staff for being so warm and welcoming!

Not a top level experience. My husband and I have been coming to Key West for nearly twenty years. Stayed at the Casa Marina resort and guest houses in Old Town. We’ve driven by The Mermaid and Alligator many times. For this trip we decided to stay here. Disappointed to say the least. It’s advertised as high end and luxury. The property itself is truly captivating with lush landscaping. The room decor is equally alluring but as soon as you shower you’re met with a WalMart quality towel. Rough enough to exfoliate your skin. Bedding not at as low of level but not high quality. Run of the mill hotel chain bedding. My biggest surprise is how guests are expected to accommodate the resorts strict schedule. This is a small property so they are not dealing with a large number of people. Breakfast is a strict 8:30-10. It’s modest at best although the cook does a preplanned cooked item. Waffles one day. Ham/cheese omelette another. Modest toast, bagel and fruit cup along side cereal. Hardly a luxury breakfast selection and again only available for 1.5 hours. Happy hour is again a strict one hour period. 4-5 in the evening. A Robert Mondavi common red and white. The snacks consisted of bagged cookies, microwave popcorn or Oreo cookies packages. Best Western hotel level of snacks to pair with your wine. Room service is my biggest complaint. At NO POINT at check in where we informed we needed to request room service/cleaning. A luxury guest house should attend to your needs and hanging a “service request” door hanger falls short. Apparently it’s the backside of the Do Not Disturb hanger. Day two we put it out and received no service. Day three my husband watched the housekeeper look at the door as she walked by during the breakfast hour. Ours had the Do Not Disturb as I wasn’t up yet. Before we left later that morning (10:45) it was switched to Service Requested. To be clear I wanted the room cleaned before we left I stopped into the office and made a verbal request at which I was assured it would be cleaned. We returned at 4:00 and again our room hadn’t been cleaned and by now we were out of towels. I went back into the office and spoke to the same lady. At this point it became the blame game and she kept trying to turn it back on me. I put the door hanger out and verbally told you. This was not a miscommunication or my fault but the establishment. It appears although a small property with limited guests they maintain a rigid schedule and you must confirm. If you want to eat the modest breakfast you have 1.5 hour window. Want wine and cheap snacks you have a strict one hour. Want your room cleaned and fresh exfoliating towels apparently you can’t sleep in. Be up before the breakfast time with your door hanger hung. Perhaps add a blinking lighted arrow for attention. As I said for close to twenty years we’ve come to Key West and I’ve never wanted to move accommodations halfway through our stay. Beautifully maintained home and landscaping as advertised. Just don’t expect an equal level of customer service. Clearly we won’t stay here next year.

The most romantic bed and breakfast tucked away from the activity of Duval Street. Gorgeous lush garden and plunge pool. Sophisticated rooms.

What an experience! Great spot to get away and relax! Very close to the Duval Street! They offer complementary drinks and snacks plus breakfast! WiFi included. And the outside garden is like an isolated oasis!

This is a real gem. This was our first visit and it couldn't have been better. Love that it was off of the busy Duval St. But only a short walk away. It has a quiet but elegant feel. Rooms are beautiful. Breakfast and amenities were excellent. The staff go above and beyond to make your stay amazing. We met some amazing people during the cocktail hour in the pool. We highly recommend and look forward to our next stay. Thank you.

Absolutely wonderful! Diana and her staff were so great in taking care of us. My boyfriend and I loved breakfast and it was made fresh every morning. Our room was so beautiful and romantic and we were able to get an early check in when we arrived! The pool was great and the added bonuses the hotel offers i.e beach chairs, coolers, towels were a nice welcome touch as well. Happy hour was also a nice touch and we loved the wine and snacks offered! Everything on the premise felt/looked clean and it was such a nice quiet location that was proximate to all the local tourist spots. Highly recommend and can't wait to stay here again when we revisit!

The B and B is absolutely beautiful. Wonderfully landscaped and absolutely immaculate. It's conveniently located within walking distance of just about everything you want to see on your trip. We did have a slight hiccup on our visit, but it was resolved by the staff and I have revised my original review from 4 to 5 stars because I truly believe they want to be the best at what they do. I highly recommend this hidden paradise.

My husband and I celebrated my 60th birthday at the Mermaid and the Alligator and everything about our stay was perfect. From the moment we arrived, Diana let us store our luggage as it was not time to check in. She then suggested a fabulous place for brunch, Azur, which was walking distance and a local favorite. We we returned several hours later, our room was ready and it so lovely. The Royal Poinciana, which was very roomy, on the corner end of the home, and had its own balcony. There is no room directly beside this suite so it is very quiet. Diana had champagne and chocolates that my daughters had requested as a surprise in the room waiting for me! How sweet! The entire property is gorgeous and so peaceful. A haven from a busy day in the Keys and far enough from Duval that is very quiet. We walked by the old cemetery many times to various points of interest. You should definitely go inside and see the interesting tombstones, and there is even a guided brochure and tours. We rented bikes which were on the property as well, and Diana helped us with instructions on locking them up. We took the bikes to Fort Zachary State Park that had a gorgeous beach and chair and umbrella rentals. Biked to Blue Heaven for their famous Key Lime Pie on the way back. The M&A is so close to many museums, restaurants, and attractions, including Duval, that you really don't need a car if you are used to walking. We walked about 3-4 miles each day, but the heat index was comfortable so remember that if you choose to walk everywhere. It was so nice to come back to the M&A and cool off in the plunge pool or sit on our balcony with a glass of wine and cool breezes. The have a wine and cheese hour in the afternoon which was nice. Yes, I have read reviews about the wine being less expensive in quality, but it is nice they offer this, and it is a nice spot to meet the other guests. The snacks and beverages they have 24/7 is also were very much appreciated. I filled up my water bottle with their infused water and it was so refreshing on our walks. I did hear people complain about the roosters in some reviews. I live on a farm, so this was very normal to me, and I never found it annoying. On the contrary, the chickens and their little pullets were so sweet. The Inn is immaculate and the very nice woman that prepared our breakfast each morning was very sweet. I have read reviews complaining of the breakfast, but we were very impressed with the quality and quantity of items offered besides the hot entree each morning. We especially enjoyed the fresh fruit and granola. There is also a small grocery right around the corner where you can purchase wine and snacks as well. We met Kate, another Inn Keeper after Diana was off for a few days, and she was very nice as well and gave us great suggestions for restaurants that locals enjoy. I did much research before choosing lodging for our vacation, and The Mermaid and Alligator did not disappoint! I especially appreciate that the entire property is non-smoking and that it is for adults only. We met a very nice couple that reserves the Bamboo Suite several times a year, and they have it booked for next year as well. This tells you how much people love this home. It was just an gorgeous oasis in a beautiful part of old town Key West. We can not wait to return!

This was our first time staying at a bed & breakfast and we were pleasantly surprised. (We actually stayed November 2021 but I'm just now doing my review. ) It's close to everything yet private too. We parked our car and walked everywhere we wanted to go. Diana was amazing - so welcoming that we soon felt like we were old friends. She gave us great recommendations for dining when off Duval Street. We stayed in the Bamboo Room which was clean and the bed was comfortable. There are many areas to sit and relax among the gardens on the property. Sitting on the front porch with a glass of complimentary wine and watching traffic drive by was relaxing after a busy day. Yuki cooked our breakfast in the morning and she was very friendly and a good cook too. Seeing her smile every morning was a great way to start the day. We not only recommend, but will definitely stay at The Mermaid & The Alligator again!

This place is a gem. Beautiful and private setting. We were there with an entire group that ended up renting the entire place for about a week. Staff is exceptional, breakfast was delicious, and you feel right at home. Short waking distance to everything and in between shuttle pick up spots for those not looking to walk around. Thank you so much for having us, you made our first trip to Key West a wonderful time!

The Mermaid and the Alligator is cute, but for the money the amenities and comfort are lacking. The Sun room is tiny and is located right next to the stairs, giving hardly any privacy through the walls and drafty door. The window unit a/c stays illuminated through the night making it difficult to sleep. There isn’t an exhaust fan in the bathroom, so it stinks which is probably why there are air fresheners literally everywhere in this place. The breakfast is served pretty late and is just so-so. The location is the best feature.

The historic house so cute and charming, the tropical garden has a real Key West feel, the staff is very nice and the daily freshly cooked breakfast is great. The location is also perfect - quick walk to everything. I will definitely stay here again!

UPDATE: On our stay at The Mermaid and Alligator in Key West. We were contacted by Lisa the Vice President of Operations of the Riley Hotel Group. She thought the on-site manager had both addressed and resolved the situation. When she realized neither was the case she emailed me followed with a phone conversation. While in Key West I asked the on-site manager for two nights credit of the seven night stay. One night due to being locked out and one night as apology. This failed to occur by on-site management. Lisa offered four nights credit of our seven night stay for the company failing in providing a working after hours number. I felt it acceptable and that Lisa was heartfelt sorry. Lesson don’t get locked out when you travel to tropical locations. Mosquito, lizards and humidity oh my! 😖 Prior to hearing from Lisa we had reached out to the Select Registry for help. They also contacted the Riley Hotel Group on our behalf. A benefit of staying at a Select Registry property. If you aren’t familiar with Select Registry it is a designation of superior service and accommodations for boutique hotels and bed & breakfasts. I recommend if you have the opportunity to stay at a property with this distinction to give it a visit. Key West boasts only two with this accreditation. Riley Hotel Group Select Registry Distinguished Inns of North America Mermaid and The Alligator We made a memory that we will never forget. We were locked out of our room after hours. There was two after hours phone number posted. We called both numbers repeatedly (8-10 times each). One number would answer then discount. The second (EMERGENCY NUMBER) would answer and ask for my name, property we were staying at and which room we were in. Then stating that someone would contact me shortly. Nobody ever contacted us at all. We were forced to sleep outside all night while being attacked by mosquitoes and other bugs. When the morning cook arrived about 7:00am the next morning we were finally able to explain our situation through her broken English. The cook looked for and found the master key after an hour and let us into our room at 8:00am. When the manager arrived at 9:00am her response was why didn’t you call this number (the emergency number). After explaining how many times we did call the number the manager said she would look into it. Later that afternoon the manager explained that the call center claimed they received no calls during the night. The manager refused to look at the call long on my phone as proof of our numerous calls. We were offered a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates as an apology for our inconvenience. We were refunded one nights rate since we did not have access to our room for one night. I feel I am justified in requesting a refund of two nights rate as a proper apology. Which has been refused by the Riley Group that owns the property. When checking in we were told that the room would be cleaned every other day. After three days we had to ask for the room to be cleaned and it still wasn’t cleaned. While the property is 5 ⭐️ . The ammoniates definitely is not. The sheets and towels in the rooms are Walmart quality. Happy Hour is two bottles of wine and a few packing Oreo cookies. The complimentary breakfast is very basic offering only one hot option per day and is regulated to 1 1/2 hours only. You get a better basic breakfast offering at Denny’s. We have not been contacted by the Riley Group about this incident except through the onsite management. This after numerous phone calls and emails directly to the company. I do believe the manager was truly sorry for the missteps we encountered but unfortunately her hands were tied by corporate management. The Mermaid and The Alligator of today is a prime example of how corporate management can and does trash what was once a great accommodation. So run do not walk away from this property.

Best vacation of our lives. Went in August for my 50th birthday. Beautiful BnB, excellent staff and food, anything you need/want they can get or recommend. Close to everything and so peaceful and relaxing. 5/5 recommend to all! Hope to return soon.

Beautiful tropical gardens. Only 9 rooms so the social experience was lovely. Lots of private spots to lounge around in lush gardens. Food was fabulous. Home was beautiful. Super romantic

Stayed here for my 25th wedding anniversary trip and could not have had a more relaxing time. We stayed in the Caribbean Queen suite and it was perfect. I fell asleep in the hammock on the porch after some long traveling our first night while listening to what I think were tree frogs in the evening. Between the soaking tub, hammock and comfortable bed, it was hard to get up and explore the rest of Key West. Delicious hot entrees made right as you come down for breakfast served in the quiet courtyard with many little geckos popping out while we ate. The pool was perfect for a quick afternoon dip before heading out for dinner. Close enough to Duval to be near all the action, but quiet enough to also relax. All the staff I encountered were friendly and warm. Would definitely stay here again!

Romantic stay for couples. Gorgeous and well decorated. We particularly enjoyed the private terrace leading to a garden with pool and hammock. Homemade breakfast served in the garden was delicious! Absolutely magical and exceeded our expectations in every way. Within walking distance to Duval street, and other sights.

We had never stayed at a bed and breakfast before. This was a wonderful first experience. Everyone was helpful and friendly. Every question answered and every need met! Delicious food, beautiful rooms, snacks and drinks available all day. We stayed in the Caribbean Queen room but were also able to see the garden and treetop rooms - all held their own charm and were beautifully decorated. Loved the lush tropical surroundings to relax in the pool or for happy hour. Enjoyed breakfast in the garden. Not too far from Duval street, Southernmost point, and the kiosks for the trolley tour. Hope to stay here some time again. Thanks for the wonderful stay-wish we could have stayed longer.
