Sunset Key's official name is Tank Island. The United States Navy constructed Tank Island to serve as a fuel tank depot during the Cold War. Dredging began in 1965 to form the island as well as to build passageways for submarines and other large vessels. However, the Navy's plans changed and the island saw little military action. Only two of the twelve planned fuel tanks were constructed, and although the fuel lines were run, the tanks were never filled. ©WIKIPEDIA

A little island about 500 yards (460 m) across from Key West, FL only accessible by a shuttle boat that runs from the Margaritaville Marina out to the island. There are around 69 private properties of which only a few are still vacant stands.

If you go to Key West, you gotta go to Sunset Key. Per it’s name it has the most amazing sunsets you will ever see. The water is gorgeous, the sand is sugary white and the sunshine is amazing. There’s also a fabulous little outdoors restaurant called Latitudes at the Westin on the island. Definitely recommend the 5 minute boat ride, the food and the views!😎

A bunch of us went to a birthday party of a friend years ago on the island before any houses were there. A couple of years later, we stayed at the house of another friend in a community recently developed there. It was something to behold.

The lush gardens, the lovely pool, the ice cream guy that rides his bike and gives out haagen daz popsicles… it’s magical!

Seaweed and rocks that cut your feet up. Merky water (and no rain). Beach is about 20' out to the buoy and not even the length of a football field. Expensive if you're thirsty or hungry.

BEWARE IF YOU'RE GOING TO SUNSET KEY NEXT WEEK- only restaurant on property is closed. I only know this because I called them- no notification was made to guests. Closest breakfast restaurant is going back to the mainland. I've left a message for the general manager to call me, yet after 2 days I have not heard back. So disappointed!!!!!

Florida Keys is a perfect tropical paradise, and if there's one island in the archipelago that without doubt is the perfect island escape, it has to be Sunset Key. Unfortunately however it's an exclusive and privately owned paradise island and access is controlled so you need a pass or be accompanied to visit. We sailed there and enjoyed the magnificent sunset!
