The open day at the naval base in Kiel is an exciting experience for Kiel Week. No entry fees, good parking, it's best to arrive by bike or e-scooter. We recommend the classic Bundeswehr pea soup. All kinds of boat trips and demonstrations from the various stationed units are offered. There are bouncy castles and face painting etc. for the children. Ships can be visited, but you should wait a little for the ship tours below deck.

I don't know how to get to this pier as a tourist. But this is a beautiful ship moored here. As I understand it, this is a military berth of a military base. When we were there in 2011, we went on an excursion to the Russian Large Landing Craft. He came to the port of Kiel at the invitation of the Germans and stood a hundred meters from the German frigate of the Commander-in-Chief of the German Navy. To enter this pier, we were met by a military representative and escorted to the ship's ramp. During the journey we managed to take several photos of this pier. It was Kiel Week, which once a year at the end of June welcomes yachtsmen from all over the world to a sailing regatta.

Unfortunately it was pouring like hell when we were there. However, it is a very impressive ship. Please note: the ship is docked on Bundeswehr property. You get a good view of the ship from the keel line or the street.

The Gorch Fock is newly renovated on the Tirpitzmole in the naval harbor of Kiel. You can photograph them very well from the keel line, ideally with a small telephoto lens. Good pictures can also be taken with a cell phone. The Gorch Fock will soon be going to sea. If you still want to see them, you have to hurry up. Parking is free on Parkstrasse, which borders Diederichsen Park. From there it's about a 400 meter walk to the ship.

A very beautiful sailing ship in the harbor. Unfortunately it was a bit far away, but was still a nice backdrop. Especially in the afternoon with some sun and great clouds. You can also take a nice walk along the sea or ride an e-scooter.

(Translated by Google) Unfortunately, you couldn't get any closer to the Gorch Fock because it was in the naval base. But even from a distance it looked impressive.

The sailing training ship of the German Navy. I myself was part of the regular crew from 1993 to 1998 and am very grateful for it. For me, training on the ship is an indispensable part of officer training. You just can't teach experience. There is also the secondary mission as German ambassador on the world's oceans for peace and tolerance. The ship is definitely worth seeing, but since it is fulfilling an official mission, you have to catch a time when an "open ship" is offered during folk festivals (e.g. Kiel Week) or port stays on training trips.

You can admire this beautiful ship up close. We were lucky that the frigate Bayern was right next to it.

At her home port berth, the Gorch Fock can be seen very well from the keel line. Definitely a nice photo opportunity. Perhaps it would be better to find out in advance whether she is there too.
