We have been coming to the griffin for nearly a year, food is really good however the service has never been the best, however when we came last Sunday it was horrendous! On arrival the reception area absolutely stunk of vomit and had the smell been the same in the restaurant we would of left. We ordered food and drinks on arrival and literally never seen any sign of that waitress again the whole time apart from when they brought our order out by a different waiter, which was incorrect twice!! No apology just 2 waiters standing over our table arguing with each other about what food was what! We eventually was given the food we ordered and wasn't offered another drink when our glasses were clearly empty, we did try and grab the attention of the waitress but were ignored. The whole place has gone downhill which is a shame as the food is lovely. Can't say we will return in a hurry.

Went this evening with my daughter. I have a medical condition i have a bowel problem and I am having surgery, also like to mention due to this condition I suffer with social anxiety and never though I would have to comment this on a review or explain whilst trying to have a evening out for tea. Daughter ordered from child's menu and ordered 2 mains I couldn't find anything on the main menu to suit my dietary needs plus did not want a big large meal as I cant eat it. I asked the waiter a young man if there was something I could order to suit my condition but also a small portion he said I will ask , also would like to add we were seated next to a couple.. if I had moved my elbow I would of been touching the lady .. even though they were plenty of other tables. Waiter came back and said no there's nothing u can order and also they have cancelled one of the child's main meal .. I asked why to be told I cant order a kids meal .. however I did not want a kids meal and explained they were for my daughter and I couldn't eat anything from a kids as I have a health problem.. the couple heard all this and I did not want to make a scene or start talking about bowels as they were eating. In the end spoke to the manger again had to explain my condition and also I wanted something from the main menu but needed some assistance due dietary requirements. Got no where .. daughters one main meal came ... she only ate half think the conversation about bowels and also the humiliation put her off she said the food was not very nice.. the whole atmosphere is very cold in the restaurant.. staff not very welcoming food very over priced also . I never had anything to eat as I was told no and the couple at the side of me have had a lesson about ibs and bowel movements. Feel embarrassed I couldn't wait to leave. The whole vibe is very cold not a nice place ... although it is a nice pub to look at very well presented but no heart or personality.. Will not be returning and have emailed a complaint this evening

Didn’t stay here but had food here 12.7.2022… food OK. Service was shambolic… it’s a nice place with a great outdoor design but come on get a grip on the service!!! Tables and food left and uncleared , inattentive staff ( what staff there are) … not 1 waiter or waitress service! Won’t be going back.

2 visits in the same week. No prices on tapas menu, no mention of tapas offer viewed after ordering. Both occasions they ran out of something we wanted initially. The first visit they tried to serve a platter without mentioning they'd run out of yet another item, assume they thought we wouldn't notice. I mentioned it was afternoon and shops are open but was told they cant do that. Imagine my surprise when i popped to my local shop last week for eggs, to discover the griffin had bought them all..... It's such a shame. Seems as though they need to employ an adult to actually train the staff. On another visit I ordered tea and had to ask and wait 5mins for milk. Better than yet another time they chose not to mention the coffee machine had run out of milk, nor offered any. I'm ashamed for the management frankly. I can't be an anomaly.

Overall the food and beer is reasonably good and they serve cask ale. The place is tidy, clean, has an excellent outside area and is well laid out. The pizza from the wood fired oven outside is lovely. However, we have had some extremely poor food in here occasionally. The service is definitely what lets this place down the most and the bar is drastically understaffed. It seems to be run by young inexperienced staff most of the time and would greatly benefit from a maitre d or better food and beverages management. A little more meet and greet would go a long way as would more experienced staff. Hope that helps

Despite them not being over-busy, service was quite slow & we had to chase up staff to take orders for both main & dessert courses. We were generally satisfied with the quality of the food except the burger which was of a poor standard & we complained. Eventually they made a conciliatory gesture by removing one glass if wine from the bill (i.e. 1/2 the cost of the burger)

We arrived to an amazing playground for our child. Which allowed us to enjoy the sun for a while. We then made it in to the restaurant to be seated very quickly. James was assisting us, I have never felt so valued by a member of staff in a restaurant. He is so professional and polite. He is the kind of employee that will make us want to return. Absolutely fantastic work from him serving us today. He got our little girl everything she needed and his service was exceptional. No bad comments at all the restaurant is spotless and food was fantastic.

Great atmosphere and lovely food, staff were helpful and friendly. You will have to book in advance as it gets very busy at weekends. Has limited parking and can be a problem trying to find alternative parking in the area

Rooms above pub with dining. On main road so easy to find. Good food. Nice room but other peeps started rising from 0440hrs and the doors bang closed (no handles on corridor side) Some sounds through adjoining wall from bathroom too. With earplugs, you'd be fine.

The staff were very helpful, and the room was clean, but the bed was awful with one mattress on the double bed completely collapsed which led to a very uncomfortable and sleepless night. There were no extra blankets in the room and it was a little chilly at night. The TV had to be turned on and off manually behind the screen as the remote controller did not work, no battery cover and the batteries looked like they had been chewed by a dog. Our room was next to a fire exit and there were people going out the fire exit door and smoking just the other side of it, which meant we kept getting a strong smell of smoke inside the room from under the door. The carpets in the hallways have all seen better days. The hotel side could definitely do with updating. Important note, they do not serve breakfast. The restaurant and food for dinner was all OK and the pub had good outdoor areas. The car park is difficult to find and not well signposted.

Happened to stumble upon this place completely by mistake, we took the wrong junction when travelling to our local place to eat. The exterior really does not do this place justice, much of the grounds are not viewable by the road side, it's not until you actually enter the car park you see what a gem this place is, clearly allot of effort has went into the design of the beer garden with different seating areas, to suit different peoples tastes and plans. There is in outdoor stone oven for making fresh pizza, something that you'd see at a hotel resort in Spain or similar, really impressive. The staff are all friendly, very smartly dressed, and never stood around, it was not a particularly busy day when we visited but it was refreshing to see that all staff members were making positive use of there time, when the weather improves it's important tables are cleared quickly as to not attract flies and wasps, this was not an issue as the staff were all over it. The food was fantastic and reasonably priced, prices were as you would expect from such a place, not pricey but not Weatherspoon's cheap, so exactly what we expected. Drinks again I believe Larger you will expect to pay in the region of £5 again typical prices, however you will pay a slight premium for cocktails, but that again isn't unusual, my partner ordered a Martini and was very impressed. A truly hidden gem that really does need to be seen to be appreciated, clearly allot of love and effort has went into this place, it's the little things that make a big difference and they've smashed it. I will be visiting again, since they have an outdoor play area for the kids, I'll be bringing my daughter, maybe when we can guarantee more positive weather.

Was hassle and a long wait to book in, which was not great service. The room was worn. The bathroom looked gorgeous, but the pressure in the walk-in shower was awful. The music / quiz was on till nearly midnight on a Wednesday night and was then woken by traffic at 6am. So not a good night's sleep. The linen was clean and the bed was comfy. Hallways were worn and very untidy.

Below average food and poor customer service. Arrived and was stood waiting to be shown to the table for over 10 minutes. Eventually we had to find someone to ask if we could sit in the designated area despite staff seeing us waiting. Staff had limited knowledge of the menu. Poor options available for vegetarians. Ordered 4 adult meals and a child’s meal, the child’s meal was brought out last by which time he was restless, then the dessert for the child was forgotten. The staff didn’t clear the plates away once finished or even check to see how the food was. Eventually once the dessert was brought out midway through eating we were told “we had to move because there was a booking”. No signage to indicate reserved area and previously told we could sit where we had asked, and not even a polite request to be moved. Overall the food was average at best and the attitude and service of the staff was terrible. Quality definitely deteriorated in the last 6 months.

Be prepared to have to reorder and wait for over an hour for food. We arrived early on Sunday for a quick lunch outside. What we found were London prices for food and an awful experience and it wasn’t even busy.

I stayed overnight at the Griffin Inn, the evening prior to a client meeting. It’s a nice place, with a sizeable, busy pub serving a good selection of real ales, lagers and craft beers. There might have been a couple of new starters as the staff seemed a little disorganised, but they were friendly enough and quite attentive. I had a gammon steak with pineapple, egg and chips, and it was great… I really enjoyed it. The beer was good too, I had a couple of pints of Beavertown Neck Oil, and it was perfect. The room was a bit disappointing. A mix of old and new fixtures, grubby carpet and the shower stopped working at one point (presumably because other people were using the shower in other rooms at the same time). The hairdryer stopped working too. I did intend to mention this to someone, but when I left in the morning, there wasn’t anybody around. They have a decent looking outdoor space too, adjacent to the car park. I imagine it gets well used during the summer months. Overall, I’d say it’s a great place to go for a beer and a bite to eat. The rooms however, could do with a bit of TLC.

I did not stay this time but many family members have and my mum did a few weeks ago. I walked in tonight to get a drink and a starter with my 78 year old mum after a traumatic visit with my dad in hospital, in fact I had a long day shift also as I work at the hospital and we just needed an hour chill. There were over 25 tables empty and not reserved but we were turned away abruptly telling us there was a party in the restaurant and they could not accommodate us. Seriously turning away your bread and butter punters is a very bad idea. Good luck for the future because management are going to lose business treating loyal customers this way. How rude and inconsiderate …

Like this pub. Great outside spaces to sit well covered and heated. Had lovely fish and chips good size portion and well cooked. Large fish and lovely and white. Nice inside the pub as well. X

A great place for a stop over. Food lovely, great outdoor facilities, suitable for all age groups, and lovely area for sitting and relaxing with a gin and tonic. Staff lovely, especially Jess.

We have been here twice and food has always been spot on. Parking is limited as it was so busy in the outside area where they had a singer. Great vibes

Absolutely gone to ruin. There's a new manager in this week, I hope she knocks some heads together. Currently a bunch of teenagers and an older clueless fella trying to be trendy having jokes and messing about. No attention to tables, people queueing, glass washing, delivering food or basically anything apart from chatting and cracking jokes. I feel sorry for the chef, the food was good when it arrived.

We had an evening meal at The Griffin Inn, it was lovely. I had a celeriac soup which was velvety smooth and delicious, followed by a cheese and onion pie on a bed of cauliflower with a cheese sauce, honestly, it was heavenly they obviously have a marvellous team of chefs. My family had steak meals, or burgers and all declared them superb. There is a delightful array of desserts. It's a very attractive olde worldy kind of a place, wheelchair friendly with a very pretty garden and children's area outside. Parking is to the rear which involves taking the road to the left of the inn if driving from Kirby. I would highly recommend The Griffin Inn for a family meal or a romantic encounter.

Great location and a great pub which has been well designed with an exceptional outside area. The owners have invested significantly however even if you have the best pub in the world if it takes ages to get served it kills the experience. The online ordering service for outside is killing the service inside. It’s a great place with friendly staff and you are so close to being one of the best.

We ate here last night as a family of four and whilst it was ok it was just ok. It wasn’t busy 4 or 5 tables including our own. Our waitress was pleasant and smart in appearance and answered our question regarding one of the meals prior to ordering. The food was mostly nice, not amazing just nice. Apart from the chicken burger which had that much coating on the chicken the bun disintegrated and became a sloppy mess. The background music went off for a good 10/15 minutes making it seem sterile as it wasn’t busy. We weren’t offered any condiments. We had no check back. At which point we could have mentioned the chicken burger. The plates weren’t cleared away so no offer of desserts No second drinks offered. At time for payment no bill was brought to us so we waited at the bar at which point another customer asked me if I wanted serving “their useless in here” where his words… The team members that where there were chatting around the far side of the bar oblivious to us.

Always get good food here with a well balanced menu and plenty of options. Had a beef roast dinner today and it was by far the best roast I've had out of the house. Staff were lovely as usual.

Had a large booking for tea last night. So we had to pre order our meals 48hr prior to the meal. Some of our party cancelled on the day of the meal, meaning their meals were no longer needed. When I contacted the griffin to explain, it was no bother atall. The food was beautiful, no complaints from anyone of our party. You made a special surprise meal go so smoothly, thankyou so much 💖 and then halfway through our meal a lovely lady started singing, so then we enjoyed the music, she was also fantastic!

Been here a few times now and it's always been good. We went on Sunday for a Roast. We both had the moving mountains roast which is a plant based Sunday roast and have to say it was pretty poor.. It was made up of 2 big chunks of soya protein and 3 different veg. Spuds, carrots and greens. For a vegan roast you'd think we'd have more veg Than meat substitute? Now this may come as a suprise but eating plant based we do like our veg. Ordered soup to start and the roasts were brought out first meaning that they were sent back while the soup was brought out. Was asked if we would have our mains at the same time as the starter. Our mains were clearly just kept under a hot lamp and kept warm as the spuds that came back out were tough. And everything went a bit dry. Overall it was a bit of a let down. Don't get me wrong it's a lovely pub and the staff are all really nice and the atmosphere was great but if you're vegan and want to get out for lunch on a Sunday then I can't recommend this place.

We had our Wedding Breakfast here last week. What can I say. Amazing. Michelle was a star all the way through with the preparation and the arrangements. Took away any stresses that we may have had. The day itself was amazing. All the staff were brilliant especially Will our MC for the day and Michelle again for being there all the way through.Food was out of this world and everyone at the function have commented on the food and the staff. Can't thank the Griffin enough for making our special day even more special . Would highly recommend the Griffin. Well done to All.

Lovely pub. The roast dinner was not cooked enough for my personal taste. I like my vegetables a little bit softer and roast potatoes more crispy. Can't fault the service and the pub setting

Very busy during lunch time, good job we booked a table. Food was very good and tasty but quite expensive. Two courses for set price was better value but didn't include desserts which were very over priced. Perhaps work on a three course lunchtime option. Staff were friendly but service was very slow to the table and inconsistent which let it down. Also over charged on the bill which was bad and we did sort out. Would maybe return on a special occasion as too expensive for everyday lunch stop.

Fabulous food, good menu to choose from. decor is lovely, the staff were very helpful and professional. I Helped a friend to Book a party for a party of 15 to 20 people for today The staff could not do enough to help to help us decide on menu. Hope food is as good as we trued out last week.

Went for my Dad's birthday and can quite happily say the food and service was spot on. We had the Sunday menu with a roast dinner highly recommend. The veg was a bit over done, however the sticky toffee pudding was too die for! Will definatley be returning to try the normal menu.

Firstly I’d like to say ‘Will’ is an asset to this company. He’s so friendly and happy to help. Always straight to it with a smile. In regards to my stay, the room was spot-on for what I needed. I needed a comfy bed, a clean room, a place to make a cup of tea and a bathroom with a nice shower and that’s exactly what I got. Don’t get me wrong there are things that can be updated – for example, the floor creeks in room eight quite a lot but it doesn’t really bother me and the overall look could be updated but that doesn’t stop me staying here or having a pleasant time. I will say my only bugbear was that there was no plug right next to the bed and there was no breakfast but again it didn’t bother me too much. I went downstairs for food both evenings and it was amazing. I highly recommend the lamb rump steak and the fish and chips. The service is quick, and friendly and even in busy times when they look rushed off their feet they always checked in to make sure we were okay or if we needed anything else. I don’t really understand the other reviews that are incredibly negative regarding this place but each person has their own opinion. The staff were friendly, the room was a nice quiet place for me to rest my head and I felt safe. I was in room eight at the end of the building and there was a football match on on my second night and after 10 pm I couldn’t hear a single thing. The only noises I ever did hear were people using the toilet in another room or talking really loudly but again that wasn’t that often and it didn’t bother me. If you’re going for a luxury hotel this isn’t for you but if you’re going for friendly, quiet, comfortable and simple that is the perfect stop. I’d quite happily go back again and stay overnight again. And I’m a female on my own for work. Thanks Griffin Inn - you are great!!

Really good experience. Was extremely busy but was still served in good time and food come fairly fast, was fresh and hot. Kids loved the play area outside. Overall was really nice!

Lovely little pub, was there for a funeral so keep that in mind for the review! The room was lovely and clean and cosy, perfect for what was needed. The staff all seemed really friendly and helpful. The food was absolutely delicious, I'm not sure if they're items from the usual menu or not but the seeded bread for the sandwiches was lovely really fresh and spongey if that's the right word for bread! The potatoes in mustard dressing though *chefs kiss* and there was gammon on a platter too which was really nice and not dry as it can be sometimes. Overall I really liked the place and would love to return to sample the menu as a paying customer and most likely will do at some point!

Fabulous friendly pub very tastefully decorated, clean and friendly. Food is amazing. Outdoor area is vast and very child and dog friendly. Individual family pods with heating and great play area. Only one thing, it's quite pricey but I suppose you pay for the comfort.

Booked for a meal for a group of 13. Was sent 3 menus, on arrival told only had 1 available, alit of the menu also not available. Food very poor standard, cooked steak wring twice after being sent back. The service for the waitress was great, very attentive and apologetic, the waiter serving the drinks was terrible, juts dumped on the table, actual put a pint in front of 6 year old, clearly not paying attention pushed a door in to in to my father in law. The pub itself is very nice, great beer garden, play area for kids, plenty of seat. Food is shocking

Room £60 for a room with no breakfast in this location is excessive. The room is very tired (the bathroom is renovated though) and the noise from the pub downstairs is very loud. I stayed two nights and the service came in to open the window only. Food We were a group of 8 for Sunday lunch. The food is OK and so is the price, but there are serious problems with the service. Our food order was lost so it came one hour late... An extra round of drinks on the house would have been nice. The same thing happened with the table beside us.

The room we stayed in was basic and tired but a fine size with plenty of room. In the bathroom, there were only hand towels and no soap but plenty of shampoo!!! The bar and restaurant were very atmospheric, with good service and excellent food.... Staff were friendly and helpful. We would recommend the restaurant/bar... not sure about staying unless the rooms got a bit of TLC and perhaps a bar of soap!!🤨

Pub looks and feels really nice inside and out with a very nice lounge and a fun, secure play area for the kids at the back. Service was a little bit slow overall and the food wasn't quite up to the prices being charged for it. Chewy 'roast' potatoes, half a hotdog made with a Cumberland and a burnt chicken breast burger with a huge bone in it didn't help.

There following a funeral. Nice room for the meal, great food, though no labels to actually say what any of the food was, or allergens within. Staff very friendly. Over all pleasant environment

Went for Sunday lunch. Plenty of choice on the menu and good 2 and 3 course price deals available. Roast beef was excellent. Wasn't particularly busy (12.30pm) and service was quick. Staff were spot on. The only reason for giving 4 stars and not 5 is that the place lacked atmosphere and seemed a bit "cold".

  • 5/5 Gaz D. 1 year ago on Google
Superb location for this pub. Perfect for a pint and there's so much choice from cask ales to beer. Tremendously clean and one of the best pints I've had. Helpful staff too. A nice nig car park and also outdoor seating which is perfect even in winter as it's covered and has heaters to take the chill off. Food is available although I didn't eat here. Loads of spirits too and a wide range of premium gin. I fully recommend coming here for a meal and drinks during the day or in the evening.
