Gorgeous old ruinous kirk with several notable, historical graves, such as a Mort house, late 1700’s grave with Masonic markings (hard to make out as weathered), Memorial to men of the Stonehaven lifeboat disaster, grave of George Robert Milne Murray, Botanist for the British Museum and Botanist Scientist for the Discovery voyage (1901), along with fantastic views and a very scenic setting. If you love history, old kirks, or gorgeous sea views, then Cowie Kirk is definitely for you to visit!

The ruins of this chapel is on the cliff facing the sea. What an incredible view. I didn’t know about this place until I did a cliff walk from the harbour town of Stonehaven. This site of history was remarkable. I was astounded by the thought of how people would have managed burying folks on a cliff at that point of time. The chapel itself is barely ruins, but this is a remarkable site to actually have a chapel and a graveyard.

Fascinating and historic place most enjoyably accessed via the coastal path from Stonehaven. Wonderful views from the cliff tops.

This part of Scotland has many ancient, ruined kirks, often located on dramatic locations overlooking glens, burns or the sea. Remains of gable ends with grave stones and trees now occupying the ruined nave. A nice place to stop and contemplate. Parking is restricted due to the neighbouring golf course. The recommended carpark is just off the golf course access road a short walk down from the Chapel.
