Food was very enjoyable particularly the mussel pasta. Service however was impeccable particularly from Ruby who was very friendly, professional and diligent. She should be highly recommended to any establishment in Cessnock.

Flavourful Italian cuisine in a quaint little cottage setting that had me reminiscing my time in Italy. The antipasto platter is superb and value for money. It can easily feed 3-4 people as an entree. The pumpkin and amaretto ravioli is mouth watering. The drinks list offers a good selection of Italian wines. If you're in the Hunter region for whatever reason, I highly recommend this restaurant (be sure to book ahead though; it is popular)!

A nice place to go if your looking for a selection of simple rustic Italian food for a reasonable price. This place has a charming small business vibe both in presentation and service. The mussels entree were accompanied with a delicious sauce on crusty bread. Was definitely the highlight for us

We dined at the Italian cottage after craving Italian cuisine on Sunday night over the long weekend in June. On entry the restaurant was packed and busy ! Sonny the manager had politely informed us once we seated that it was a very busy night and that orders were taking longer than expected but the food would be worth the wait. We ordered: 1) Raviolli di zucca - Butternut pumpkin, sage and amaretti raviolli. 2) Rigatoni al spezzatino di agnello - Lamb shoulder slow cooked with white wine and a hint of tomato with saffron. 3) Fettine di maiale alla pizzaiola - Pork tenderloins pan cooked with Tomato, garlic, oregano, panne di cassa and hint of chilli 4) Capricciosa pizza - Tomato, fior di latte, ham, olive, mushroom, artichokes 5) Dessert - Vanilla and chocolate cannoli's The food was amazingly tasty and definitely worth the wait !! 1) The sweetness of the pumpkin excited my tastebuds and matched the fresh made raviolli very well. 2) The Lamb shoulder was soft, tender and tasty while the handmade pasta complemented the dish well. 3) The pork tenderloins were cooked perfectly in thin slices and the tomato based sauce with the chilli was a great touch with the right amount of flavour and spice. The bread was a great idea to soak with the sauce as well ! 4) The pizza crust had the perfect crunch and crispiness throughout and no sogginess ! The ingredients gave a great balance and was one of the highlights of our meal. 5) Cannoli's were fresh from the crispy pastry when we broke them in half to share and the chocolate and vanilla creamed fillings were delish. The staff were polite, attentive and came around at the end to ensure everything was well despite being a very busy night. Food = 5/5 Service = 5/5 Dining experience = 4.5/5 I highly recommend dining here as the tasty food, friendly staff and overall authentic Italian dining experience was a great way to end our weekend trip up to the Hunter Valley. I will be coming back if I'm in the area again. Bellisimo Lemon cello! Quick tip: Book for a weeknight to avoid the busy times.

Everything was absolutely amazing! Food was to die for, very tasty, well presented, perfect amount. Served by Jake, super friendly and easy to talk to, recommended the veal to my wife and she said it was amazing, melts in your mouth. Definitely recommend going and I will be back.

Amazing food! Super friendly staff, manager with cool sense of humour. My favorite is their pasta. The taste of the sauce, texture of linguini, mouth watering smell, everything were just in great balance and perfect. The price were friendly just like the family oriented vibe of the restaurant ! Highly recommend for people who like a intimate family style dining experience!

Great local Italian joint. Would recommend the bruschetta entree.. standout dish! Would be great to have a printed wine and beer list too. The staff are excellent and service is very good. Genuinely want to ensure you have had a good time and your meals are to your liking.

Authentic Italian, very nice, parents who normally like "fine dining" really enjoyed it. Kids loved it and have made us go back twice! Wine list is small, which was a shame, but the wine we had was very good. Service authentic and very warm and accommodating. Its not a white table cloth restaurant, and the decor lets the restaurant down, mainly because of a tacky sign out the front and a few other things that could give the initial impression that is not 100% amazing. But the actual experience was excellent. I think if they spruced up the decor just a fraction, and improved the training of the wait staff, without losing the authenticity, it could become rated as one of the better restaurants around especially in that price bracket (not cheap but not crazy expensive either)

Came here half an hour before closing time with my partner - wasn't turned away. We ordered: Capelli d angelo con granchio Gnocchi di Patate quattro formaggio Lemon sorbet All amazing dishes - haven't had such soft gnocchi in years. Neither dishes were too salty. Service was excellent. Good vibes. Will drive 3 hrs back here again! Thanks guys!

Called up for a booking but when i arrived my name was not on there. Once seated one menu was given between my wife and I to share because they were low on menus and waited 20 minutes for atleast one of the five wait staff to take our order but no one came. The table behind us decide they wanted dessert so menus were once again handed out to them while we just sat there waiting for someone to take our order but then once the staff came back and took the table behind us order I asked if we could we order aswell. I was told I will get someone to come take your order and as i sat there I seen the girl living her best life so after ten minutes I gave up on this place. Overall a bad experience here and another thing that made me leave was the table in front left most of there food behind which says one thing to me its not worth the wait. I hope the owners hire better staff because I'm going to tell everyone about this experience and to avoid at all cost

The service was overall great, but the ‘dramatic girl in the white blouse’ (aka ruby) truly went out of her way to give good service. Food was good, I’d say the white bait could be crispier, and the seafood pasta had an awful lot of garlic - I didn’t think too much garlic was possible but it was all I could taste. Overall was great service and great food.

This restaurant was amazing! Food was delicious, and the staff were very accommodating to my booking of wanting to sit outdoors. The bruschetta wasn’t what we thought it would be but we were pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The tiramisu was 10/10 - do not leave the restaurant without trying it. Thanks Ruby for looking after us. We will definitely be back!

What an absolute little gem! We stumbled upon this beautiful Italian restaurant on a one night stop over in Cessnock and it’s hand down one of the best Italian meals we’ve had in so long. Very rustic little place with a whole lot of country charm. Every dish was packed with so much flavour , the presentation beautiful and the staff were warm and welcoming. Highlights were the mussels, 4 cheese gnocchi and angel hair crab pasta ❤️

A high rating for a reason!! Couldn’t fault anything at all. Taste is amazing, portion sizes are great and the service is lovely. A menu loaded with options you’ll take ages to figure out which one to choose! Pasta is fresh and loved the arancini - a must visit if you live or are visiting the area!

Excellent little Italian restaurant in Cessnock. Very rustic atmosphere and ambience, with delicious pizzas and pastas. The Arancini entry was decent, but the pastas and mushroom risotto were exceptionally good. The stone baked Pepperoni pizza was excellent as well. The food does take quite a while to come out, and the decor, while rustic, is still a bit dated. Food is really good though, and highly recommend to try it out if your in the area.

This place serves some of the best food I have ever eaten. Fresh ingredients are nicely presented on the plate by staff who know how to deliver in every sense. The owner is passionate and makes sure that your experience is top-notch. The atmosphere on a mid-week evening was superb. Families, friends, and couples all chattering away tells you that people are happy to be there and enjoying themselves. I would definitely go again. Just need the excuse to travel 10,000 + miles to do so.

A hidden gem! We were there for dinner and absolutely LOVED everything! We had 2 pizzas, Papardella and mushroom risotto and were so surprised by how good everything was (especially the risotto 😋). We also had desserts: the cannoli and tiramisu, both excellent! I’m very picky when it comes to desserts but these ones were fabulous. Hope to come back soon, thank you

An amazing place to dine at if you're in or around the hunter valley region. The place really feels like a cottage in the middle of Italy, with its cosiness and decor. To top it off the service is amazing and the food was delicious and fresh. Will be returning when I come back to the area.

We have been to Hunter Valley so many times and decided to not go to the restaurants around the tourist area. So I found this restaurant on Google and I was happy that I made the correct decision! The service was good and the food was delicious 😋 The bruschetta with figs, prosciutto and gorgonzola had a good balance of all components, every fork of the angel hair linguini was full of crab meat and sauce, and the duck ravioli was nicely cooked and had good flavour. Will definitely visit again when we come to the region next time.

Horrible food. We ordered the mushroom risotto- inedible. The raviolli tasted and looked like a prepacked frozen dinner. Half of the pasta items on the menu were not available. The service was comical (for lack of a better term). Save your money.

Absolutely, positively amazing!!! I visited this beautiful little restaurant this evening and have been blown away. The quality of the food here is so so so good. The Bruschetta con fig e gorgonzola I had for entree was so beautifully balanced in flavour and better than any I've had to date, and the arancini were delicious! I had the Ravioli Di Zucca for mains, which was a butternut pumpkin, sage and Amaretto ravioli, and OH.MY.GOODNESS, I don't think any words in the English language can quite provide the words for experience and praise this dish deserves, highly recommend. To finish off, I opted for the tiramisu and canoli. The tiramisu was so delicious and I could immediately tell it was made from scratch, as we're the beautiful trio of hand made canoli, piped with fresh handmade Italian creme. (I am salivating as I write this btw) Even the coffee to accompany the dessert was just so well made. I want to make a special mention to a) the wonderful waitress Bree who served me. Thankyou for such a wonderful experience. b)I also want to give my highest regards to the chef/s, thankyou for your talent, skill and care, your food is simply wonderful, I cannot wait until I come back here!

Could not BYO our own wine on a booking over 8 people, Thursday pizza night was cancelled without notice, they ran out of beer, there was no cocktail menu, no vegetarian entree choices. 2 people at our table were told there was no bolognese left even though 6 people who ordered after us got theirs. we also waited 2 hours from ordering our mains to actually get them which was not worth the wait - small portions and over seasoned food. My medium rare steak was overxooked, tough and chewy. The waitstaff were brilliant, but when the chef was given our feedback we were told never to come back. You can't charge people first rate prices and give them such poor quality food and expect them to be happy. Won't be recommending them to anyone

Great food that you can't go wrong with. The friendly service just makes it even better. They were happy to customise dishes to suit our needs and even threw in a few recommendations of their own which were all spot on. If you're visiting the area, a chat with Rocky and the staff here could give you a few tips on the best wines in the region too.

The Italian Cottage has a rustic and homely interior design. The staff and chef were very attentive and lovely. I love the buffalo mozzarella cheese salad, salt& pepper squid, and the duck ravioli. The seafood risotto was ok. The spaghetti bolognese was a bit bland. I had the Italian pastry cannoli filled with vanilla and chocolate cream. It was a bit pricey for humble serving. There are rooms for improvement.

Dined her for the first time yesterday with a group of friends & WOW, what a great little find. The menu was difficult to choose, it all sounded lovely. A great asset to the region, I will certainly spread the word.

My husband and I had a beautiful dinner recently at The Italian Cottage. I LOVE mussels and theirs were awesome. Great sauce, just enough balance of chilli, garlic, tomatoes. Yum! The staff are super friendly and attentive and, to top it all, I managed to leave my sunglasses behind! As we were returning to Sydney the next morning, I was unable to return to collect them but the Manager went above and beyond and posted them to me in a padded envelope. They arrived unscathed. Now that’s customer service!!

We popped by on impulse during a holiday in October and we were not disappointed! The wait staff was very friendly and the chef went through the menu with us personally as we had some dietary restrictions. We ended up ordering several dishes: burrata entree, cheese gnocchi, ricotta ravioli, lamb rigatoni and mushroom risotto. For dessert, we got the sorbet and the tiramisu to share. Overall we found the food amazing and whenever we're in the area again we'll go back to visit. I still dream about that tiramisu!

I've never written a Google review before but this place deserves it - the food is absolutely amazing and easily the best Italian food we've tasted (better than anything in Sydney at least). We ordered the Scotch fillet, the angel hair pasta with crab meat, the penne primavera and the mushroom risotto and all of it was delicious and perfectly seasoned. The serving staff were also lovely and the food was so good we want to thank the chef, Vik. We would happily drive to Cessnock from Sydney just to eat at Italian Cottage again!

We walked in with an open idea and great vibes as we were greeted from guests walking out saying how great everything was! Unfortunately we got a different feel as we where met with two girls who where thrown in a deep end of managing a venue like it was their first night. I believe this is from putting two girls on who both want the power which left jobs undone as they delegated tasks too young staff which left the juniors with two much for what they currently know. The venue filled with smoke from an extraction fan that was not working and we where also served liquor from a underage staff member who I quote “my supervisor is busy but I’m not old enough but she told me to get your drink order”. The older staff members spoke to the juniors in a fashion which proves why staff do not retain work in hospitality as they are out in situations like on that evening. We where unable to speak to the supervising staff. On another note, they young staff member who we tipped and told her how well of a job she did while in the current situation did a great job and was attentive when required. The food was also great however was a shame when we could not get any bread or something to just start us off as you would expect. If the owners want to contact me as I have tried other methods before this review please feel free to reply to this with an email or number to call and I will promptly speak further.

The reviews below are perplexing. Unsure what happened when we went. Arrived at 1830 and didn’t leave until 2100, because of slow and disappointing service. No ambience, unclean decor, tables and seats uncomfortable, poor quality food with salt as it’s only seasoning, crab from a tin and overall disappointing poor quality ingredients. Waited 45 mins for a glass of water and had to ask for drinks 5x before a cheap glass of wine arrived and wasn’t drinkable. Best advice BYOB. Live local and none of us will be coming back again, as not one redeeming feature.

Lots of gluten free options on menu. Gluten free gnocci aren't home made unlike the normal gnocci here but were still nice.

Just Amazing. I haven’t had Italian food this good since my trip to Florence. From entree to mains and even deserts not even a crumb was left. Even though it was a full house ,The kitchen and wait staff did a great job!

The food is 0 star, sorry, and seriously overpriced, I am not sure if it's a Hunter premium? The service is good though, two stars for the waitress.

Well, what a journey...... I can honestly say this was one of my strangest experiences at a restaurant. It was a roller coaster of sensational food, questionable service, and an adventure from start to finish. Firstly, there was no sparkling mineral water. I've never heard of an Italian restaurant without San Pellegrino. So soda water it was, and at least they provided still water (this was also a sage, but no spoilers at this point). Next, the starter......Italian cheese and prosciutto on homemade crusty bread. Our starter got offered to two other tables first, then when I mentioned it might be ours, we were asked whether we were table 51 (there were no numbers on the tables and were maybe 20 tables in the restaurant). Low and behold, our starter made it back to the kitchen and then to us. $20 was bit much I though - however my word it was sensational, the flavours were divine, although a bit more would not go amiss. Now, the next stage..... We waited around an hour for the mains (risotto and spaghetti bolognese), and in this time we experienced: - Glasses being dropped and smashed on the floor; and - Cutlery in the kitchen following the same fate. We were overlooked for tap water no less than 4 times in about 97 minutes - irony being it was pouring with rain outside and we could have left the glass outside ourselves for a refill. When our mains arrived - once again they were incredible! The risotto (mushroom and truffle) was well balanced, a good portion size and perfectly textured. The bolognese was slow cooked to perfection, meaty and enormous. Honestly some of the best Italian food I have had for a long time. We don't eat desert, however we did overhear another table ordering a coffee, to which the reply was that they have run out of coffee beans (in an Italian restaurant). In summary - the food was beautiful (5 star easily) and I would highly recommend it - however please don't have plans afterwards as the service can be lacking (1 - 2 stars).

Although the food was tasty, the service really lacked. The waiters were awkward and we waited over an hour for our food and missed the beginning of our movie. Also, I found a dead fly on the counter.

Amazing food, amazing service and good price. The bruschetta in particular was astoundingly good. We had a petite girl with black hair serve us as well as a blonde girl and I wish we got their names because they were friendly and accommodating whilst not being too in-your-face. A must-visit for anyone coming to the Hunter Valley area.

The mussels are way overcooked that shrunk to a marble size. The staff are nice but it took 15 minutes for our drink to arrive and 30 minutes for 2 mains on the table !

Great service from our waiter Rocco, and the food was even better. The sauces were all rich and authentic, food warm and fresh, atmosphere relaxed and inviting. All that at a reasonable price. If I was a cessnock local I would be a regular.

Went for dinner on a Friday night and we were thoroughly impressed with the food and the experience. Everything we ordered tasted amazing. Had the seafood linguine, four cheese gnocci, the arancini balls, and the rocket and pear salad. Sooo yummy. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed and the service was friendly and great. Had a nice chat to the chef as we were leaving and paid him our compliments. We will definitely be pack to try the other dishes!

Came here last weekend for long weekend dinner. There was abit of a wait on the food however the waitstaff did mention that prior to ordering which was understandable due to long weekend, the food was amazing along with the service and hospitality of waitstaff glad we enjoyed our dine in experience backed up with great food. Would come here again if I visit the area Add this to your visit list 🤌

This is my second time stopping here from Sydney on the way to the Hunter Valley and it was as good an experience as the first. The entrees were yummy and the two pizzas were very filling (forgot to take a pic of those!) Topped it off with a delicious tiramisu. The staff are also very welcoming and friendly. Definitely recommend paying a visit to this lovely restaurant.

Quaint little Italian restaurant, nice decor, felt like a romantic setting. Service was a little slow at times, with waiters not visible from tables so you were left waiting for them to come. Staff were friendly and helpful and food was delicious. Restaurant didn't seem very kid appropriate, however, they did offer plastic plates to the young children in our party and there is a kid menu. I'd say suitable to slightly older children who are happy to sit quietly at a table. Pictured is Duck Ravioli and Fettuccine Boscaiola. We also shared Aranchini for entree and Cannoli (the vanilla was amazing). Looking forward to going back.

What an amazing dining experience. Our entree mains and dessert were exceptional with authentic Italian flavours. Delicious food accompanied by good old fashion service. Jake and Rocky were outstanding, kept coming to our table and making sure we had everything we needed, recommending wines and just taking the time to converse. We loved it so much we booked to go back tomorrow night. Hidden gem and worth a visit. You won’t regret it. Nat & Troy :)

My husband took me to a getaway for the weekend and our Airbnb host recommended The Italian Cottage and we absolute loved!! The food was incredible especially the four cheese gnocchi, one of the best we’ve ever had!! If you’re passing Cessnock, would def recommend.

Alright. I will say this is the best restaurant that I have dined in on my trip from Sydney to Hunter Valley. The meals are superb and the services are great! It is located in a little town called cessnock, in Hunter Valley. Glad that we found this gem. There is a free parking lot behind the restaurant. We went without any booking on weekdays and yeah we managed to get a table there. The environment is cozy and comfortable. Authentic Italian food and everything is great. The waitresses are all very polite and lovely. I highly recommend this restaurant! 5 stars for it as I rarely give 5 stars to any restaurant.

Went out for date night on our final night at Cessnock and this place is a gem. Food is incredibly mouth watering. The atmosphere is the cutest Italian tables with a rose and candles lit. The service was amazing - the waiters let us eat our food before asking how everything was and allowed us to breathe a little when making our food decisions. The food came out pretty quickly & it tasted so fresh and full of good quality

Really enjoyed coming here for the first time. Food was super delicious, good portions, and fair price. The gnocchi was superb! Very cozy atmosphere with Italian music. Stephanie was an attentive and sweet waitress that made the whole experience even better. Will definitely come again as soon as possible!!

We had been eying off this place for a couple of months now and finally made it for dinner last night. It’s a great little place for a nice dinner and if you’re a big pizza/pasta fan then you’ll love this restaurant. I was a little let down though with the fig bruschetta, I was anticipating big things from the reviews but some what disappointed with it. The sauce was only warmish and it was rather grainy and there wasn’t enough fig or Gorgonzola flavor to really make the wow factor I was after. The serving size of the pastas wasn’t really impressive and they also didn’t exactly blow us away flavor wise. The pizza was light and airy and I loved the ultra spicy salami. Dessert was delish and my highlight of the meal. Very very disappointed with the $14 tea cup portion of tiramisu though. Laughable size if you ask me. I wouldn’t even accept coffee in a cup that small let alone a dessert. We had a great waiter who was very lovely and assisted with our wine and whisky selection. Seeing as pasta isn’t exactly my go to food, I don’t think we’ll be rushing back. But I do recommend you try it

Exceptional Italian dining experience! The real Italian flavors shone through, and the perfectly cooked pizza was a highlight. Overall, a delightful visit—we're eager to return. Hoping for a branch in Newcastle to share this culinary gem with more enthusiasts.

Great service and food, as always. We brought our dog this time and the team were happy to accommodate us with a table outside. Highly recommend!
