Parking: R30, Adults entrance R120, Kids entrance R80. Beautiful array of animals from Africa and other continents alike. From zebras to koalas, an aquarium to an Australia section, there's enough for a day visit at the zoo! Golf carts are available for R150 an hour, kiddies carts available from R100 for the full day (+ R20 deposit). There could be improvements to the bathroom facilities. There's also quite a few areas under construction, shut down cable services, no kiddie entertainment operating yet its there, or animals empty habitats but I would assume it is recent and they are preparing for better services.

Great place to visit. Was able to ride along with a staff member who showed us things behind the scenes. The entire visit was great and enjoyable. The animals were well cared for and saw several feeding activities.

My family absolutely loved the day at the Zoo! The gardens and enclosures are clean and well kept, the staff is super friendly and the animals are simply amazing. The zoo has every kind of animal from birds to fish, and reptiles and mammals. The zoo is now a permanent feature on our visits to family in PTA

Very disappointing, I was last at the zoo about 9 years ago and they were doing renovations. I thought that it was going to be improved but it is actually worse. The section they were working on is still being worked on and has not changed at all but more of the zoo is now under so called renovations, I think the renovations are just an excuse to cover a deteriorating zoo. Lots of the enclosures do not have animals in anymore, the sea aquarium is mostly empty, the Australia section was closed, the bird aviary is in ruin. Other reviews going back a year or two mention the same things so it is not just a temporary inconvenience, the entrance fee is then expensive considering you only get about 55% of what you pay for. I really hope things improve.

Our visit to the zoo was a very sad and disappointing experience. The cable car looks to be abandoned and was out of order. There was litter (plastic bags and cigarette stumps) within the animal enclosures, holes in roofs and just overall looks completely neglected. Even more concerning was that the animals look depressed, under stimulated and the enclosures which used to have beautiful water features are completely dried up. I did not see any enclosures besides the vultures that had fresh water. Even the giraffes had no fresh water, just a small bright green pool of rancid water. The elephant which is a herd animal is standing completely alone in a very small enclosure, completely unnatural. The wolves were in an enclosure that was so small it felt cruel. Three lion cubs, also in an enclosure that was unnaturally and obviously far too small. We also unfortunately saw staff feeding the birds and limas, throwing the bowls down with absolutely no care or consideration at all. One of the bowls nearly impacted one of the parrots. We were absolutely disgusted by the attitude of some staff toward the animals. We will never come back. We hope and pray the animals do not suffer for too long in those undesirable conditions.

Thank you for Hosting us, the reception was welcoming, the man doing parking tickets at the gate, to the entrance the ladies were so groomed and switched on , they suggested, offered all we might need as we began our tour, even the staff we met on the way were so helpful, guiding us. Thank you again for good service and keeping the Zoo so well maintained..

Lets start with the fact that I am giving it 3 stars... The website showed cable car rides, a train ride for kids and the theme park with a small ferries wheel. That was one of the reasons why we opt to go to the zoo... Sadly the cable cars, the train ride and the small theme park was closed due to maintenance. It was clearly visible that the cable cars had been standing for a long time due the shrubs growing around them. The same could be said about the theme park and the train ride. Everywhere you could see the impact of budget cuts due to a decline in tourism, funding restraints and Covid 19 restrictions some of the enclosures were empty and had no animals in them. Now the positive side of the review... The staff is honestly the best I have seen for a public entity. They are all friendly and very helpful and patient with tourist from other countries. The parks are well kept and neat. The restrooms were surprisingly clean and usable. We were surprised with the food at the restaurant and we kind of expected something horrible but the food was great. If you go to Pretoria Zoo do yourself a favor and rent a golf car. We will go back for sure but next time we will rent a golf car. To be honest if I had a few million dollars to give than I would invest it in Pretoria Zoo. There is fantastic potential there.

Our visit was on a Friday at the end of June. Upon arrival we received the feeding times sheet. We took the kids to see the bear feeding as per the schedule, but were informed that all the bears have died. Why have that on the feeding times roster?! We then attempted to see the penguin feeding, but there were no penguins to be seen. Anywhere. The Flamingos, Pigmy, Lemurs, Lions, Leopards and Cheetah sightings were an absolute delight. The kids loved seeing these. Unfortunately the sea display in the aquarium area had almost half of the displays out of order or empty. The park gardens are still green and beautiful in places, but there’s a large part that is unkempt. The river / stream flowing through the Zoo is absolutely disgustingly strewn with litter and milky-green with a stench. The huge bird cage used to be an attraction, but is now overgrown with weeds and all kinds of plants with the cage completely in disrepair. It does not look like the cable cars are currently working. Possibly due to winter season. The staff were friendly and helpful.

We had an awesome day with the little 1 on a Friday. Getting the golf cart for the entire day immensely improved our visit. We were disappointed by the lack of care of the facility. There are lots of animals that are no longer at the zoo. There's a lot of areas that are under construction/refurb.

The reception is great and accommodating. Stuff is friendly. The place has some spots that are quite fascinating but for a national zoo the place is not really well maintained and gives off some run down vibes in the whole vicinity. Some animals are not where they supposedly are being maintained.

The zoo has always been a great experience and are beautifully kept. Some enclosures are empty which is sad, but there is still a great variety of animals that all are well looked after.

Back in 2015 and 2018 , visiting the Pretoria zoo has been a very nice experience. Having been there before, I think the experience's energy was still the same , from time to time. I liked the fact that there was a huge variety of animals , well protected and in good shapes. The zoo's huge , covering several acres i think, from flying birds to snakes and lizards. You can enjoy going there with your family and your friends or maybe alone, to discover more about wildlife in the southern part and beyond. We rent a kart car to enjoy the place without walking, which was pretty inexpensive, I may say. Riding inside the zoo was so cool but you need to present a driving license. Overall , it may be seen as just a zoo, but it is an enjoyable experience to share with tour kids or family, to take some time off the same kind of activities you are used to.

Quite disappointed by the lack of attraction here. The grounds have so much potential and the natural flora is absolutely stunning but the amount of habitats or enclosures that were empty or closed as just not good enough to pay full price. A lot of the enclosures are under maintained and there were dangerous spiders near and around where children could touch in countless locations. Appreciate that the zoo is open, letting people in and maintaining care of the animals but it was an overall underwhelming experience for something with so much potential. Parking and entrance situation is not ideal. Still got some decent pics and got to see some good stuff.

A great day adventure for the family young and old Extreme value for money if I could change or ask for something it would be more restaurants and additional golf carts as the wait to get one is rather long It’s a great adventure however once you’ve gotten your cart you can drive around and see all different types of animals from the big 5 to the little penguins and our dangerous reptiles definitely a must visit if your in the area

After driving 50min to get to the zoo, it was a disappointment to see how few animals there actually were. It was exciting to see the ones they did have. There were Rhinos, tigers, an elephant. The zoo is kept extremely poorly and needs some work. Overall, it was an okay visit and probably won't go again.

I was pleasantly surprised by this Zoo. The zoo grounds are massive and beautiful. Accessible to those with wheelchairs. The animals are in very good condition and in general the zoo is in a very good, clean condition. The variety of animals is great. The only downside is that they don't tell you beforehand that certain enclosures of empty. Be aware that there are no longer koala bears at the zoo and although advertised they don't give pensioners discounts. Other than that it's a great place to spend the day. Plan for a good 5 hours. It's a lot of walking so if you struggle to walk. Hire a golf cart, it's well worth the money.

Entrance fee: adults R120 and kids R80. R90 for students with a valid student card. You get a good welcome at the gate and picture taken, which if you agree upon leaving, you pay R270 for a photo book. Ice cream, snack and refreshments areas throughout You can rent a cart (I'd advise you to do so for a better experience - unless you don't mind walking long distances) Overall good experience.

DONT BELIEVE THE 5 STAR REVEIWS To start off I would like to say if u are a foreigner please do research before visiting the NATIONAL ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS OF PRETORIA. This zoo was horrible, I have been here multiple times in my life but this was the worst experience by far. They had some event going on, which wasn't presented on the site, LOUD music accompanied us, and distressed animals all around. 90% of the enclosures were empty and had no inhabitants. No security and no zoo workers to be seen, horrible behavioral issues from visitors. The aquarium was all dried up, and the main tank had no fish. No work seems to be going on to improve the zoo. Maintenance was very poor, and all the enclosures were very grown out and neglected. The animals are neglected and horribly taken care of, they have no water and no entertainment. The birds have no entertainment and seem to be plucking their feathers out of bordem. They have no more snakes and frogs everything was blocked off, no penguins and absolutely no rhinos, most exotic animals were replaced with farm animals such as alpacas and cows. All elephants seem to have passed only one remaining, no hihenas or wild dogs no seals and water in enclosures is disgusting. The restaurant is now a take away place. To say the least the zoo is horrible and nothing seems to be happening about it. 😐 DONT EVEN WAISTE MONEY ON TICKETS!!!

Zoo in very poor condition. Broken beer bottles lying around hippo encampment. Trash like kfc packets, cooldrink bottles and chips packets even in other animal cages. Many trash bins overflowing. Staff all hanging around entrance sitting mostly with their cellphones. Visitors walking around drinking beer and smoking everywhere. The river is littered with trash. No soap and paper towels at toilets. Many animal cages empty. Very few animals. The health of the animals also look seriously neglected. Not sure how fresh their food and water are. Restaurants all closed for alleged renovation. Many walk ways are in bad condition. Cable car broken. Train broken. In general the zoo is very neglected. It is an embarrassment for the city. The best thing there is the gholf cars.

Probably a lot more than I had expected. Great place to hang out and check out some animals. Be sure to get a cart (not included in entrance fee) as that allows you cover more ground in the time that you're there while also having a pretty laid back experience of the zoo. Food is whatever you fancy as they have plenty of stalls there, but you also have the option to bring in your own food, even your own braai if you like

Was really impressed with the zoo and would have given it a 5, but it is in need of a bit of maintenance. The cable car wasn't working and a few of the walkways were closed. Still recommend visiting.

Would be nice to go back when all the maintenance has been done. Not many young animals most old with not more than 1 friend per cage. Lots of birds ducks and bucks. It could be better hopefully after and if the maintenance is completed it will be worth the $ trip Right in the middle of town. Shops, kids trains, cable cars and many areas closed off for now.

Great experience with my family. We enjoyed seeing different animals at the zoo. There were electric carts for hire for $150 an hour that could be used to go around the zoo. We opted to walk, and we didn't regret the experience.

Every time I return to the Zoo to attend an event the place looks worse than the time before. I must at least say that you can see that the people who is working there is trying their best to make a difference and the animals and nature of the zoo looks to be in a good condition. I just wish people would stop littering because all their litter ends up in the zoo's river and this looks terrible.

Small, well kept animal sanctuary The animals are well taken care of and the zoo is clean. There are no animal encounters at the moment but even without that our 5 year old had a great time. It seems that some parts are under construction which, when done, should add positively to the feel of the place. There is enough space for people to spread out and a cafe with a lot of seating for lunch. The initial reception/parking bay area and entrance road could use an upgrade but other than that a good Saturday morning family outing.

We had a great day today, 16 September 2021,even though the picture quality is too low but we really enjoyed as a family. The zoo is so big and too beautiful with picnics spots, braai stands and many more; besides all of that I just love the fact that it's a quiet place👌

The experience overall was satisfactory for my 7 year old son. However for me it was disappointing as the standard has significantly dropped since the last time I visited the zoo. Picnic and braai areas were not clean but muddy and messy. Many animals not there. No male lions which was a highlight on our last visit.

One of the best zoo's. Being able to rent a golf cart made the experience so much better. The enclosures are large and the animals look well looked after. Grounds need a bit of garden work with weeds. But a really fun experience.

If you buy the tickets online and expect to enjoy as advertised, we'll sorry to disappoint. Once upon a time the zoo was as they advertise it right now. Infact it was way better. If magical was a thing, you'd find it there. The zoo has lost its touch. The only reason that zoo is still open is because of what it you'd to be. And soon tourists will catch on to that. The animals are still beautiful and it's amazing being in their presence. Only true things about the zoo's ads Dear management, make things right

It was not the best experience. There is not a lot of maintenance done here. The stream is lovely but full of litter. The cable cars are closed, and many of the animals are no longer in the enclosures, but no notice is given on the boards. The restaurant is really a takeaway place and overpriced. It's best to take your own food. One positive thing is that the animals look well fed and taken care of. It was disappointing 😞

Very disappointing trip to what boasts to be the largest zoo in SA. My last visit was 15 years ago & it has definitely degraded since. The gardens, enclosures, tanks & facilities are poorly maintained with many being uninhabited. There is zero Covid protocol being policed with many people crowding together unmasked. I would not recommend this place to anybody who is actually wanting a positive & enjoyable visit to view animals & reptiles

It's clear that once long ago it was a very beautiful and special place for families to visit but it now shows signs of severe neglect, poor maintenance and it's probably underfunded. The responsible authorities should be ashamed that they have allowed the National Botanical Gardens and Zoo has deteriorated to such an extent! The number of visitors allowed at a time should be limited since the animals are being traumatized by the too many people who doesn't always behave at their best. Should something drastic and soon not be done the place will not be worth visiting.

Very sad to see how neglected the Zoo has become. I remember as a child how fascinating all the animals were. I understand that some animals do not survive in our climate. But still, a lot of empty enclosures. Also I remember the Sammy Marks Fountain working. Now just standing there in disrepair. The children enjoyed the outing, still worth a visit. But it is not at all what it used to be.

I think that more care can be taken with the animals. Some of the enclosures didn't have water for the animals. Alot of the enclosures are empty. I realize it's a mamoth task to care for so many big animals. You can pay with card at parking and entrance. However to rent the children's push carts you must have cash. This caused major inconvenience for me as I never carry cash.

The zoo is in better condition than I expected in some places, and worse in others. The entrance fee is pretty steep considering so many of the enclosures are empty, or exhibits are closed. The nice thing is that you can take in food and drinks, so it saves a bit of money there. It was still enjoyable, and we will be going back. Just not too soon. It feels like it has a novelty factor once you've been there recently.

It's really amazing and refreshing. Discounts for students are available. It's also a good place to take your children and family and get to see the vast types of animals. Give it a try and trust me, you won't regret it!

The National Zoological Garden of South Africa is an 80-hectare zoo located in Pretoria, South Africa. It is the national zoo of South Africa, and was founded by J. W. B. Gunning in 1899. Pretoria Zoo is one of the eight largest zoos in the world and one of the most highly rated.

There are some nice spots in the Pretoria Zoo. But otherwise big disappointment. The zoo he not been looked after. For many years. They blame COVID. But that is a lie. The staff are lazy, not interested. Such a pity was a beautiful place to go. Poor poor animals.

Amazing variety of animals including all of the big 5 and more, including tigers, gorillas, hippos, kangaroos, koala bears. There was also an aquarium and reptile park and plenty of places to enjoy a sunny day. I spent about 4 hours here and could have spent longer had I not been pressed for time. Great zoo!

You will never get board visiting the Pretoria Zoo. Good parking outside. Rent a golf cart maybe for the mountain areas, or just take a stroll through the whole Zoo. Plenty of animals to see. There are feeding times also. Make sure you visit the Aquarium too. Lots of sea creatures to see, kids love it.

I was here today with a friend, and oh wow... I had a great time and an educative and memorable experience for my money's worth. There are different entry fees for different categories of customers (babies, children, adults, students, teachers and students in a group, etc). The officials are nice. And, the environment is very neat and each section organized. It's a lovely place to vibe with family, friends and even strangers, take loads of pictures, see intriguing animals, feel the nature and exit feeling satisfied!

We had a fun filled day at the zoo. Lots to see and beautiful to wander around looking at all the animals. It would be awesome to have a bigger variety on the food menu's and at the food kiosks dotted around the zoo. Even a toasted cheese would have been yummy. An overall pleasant experience

Very misleading on how few animals they have, the maps in the zoo are not kept up to date on what animals they have. When you get to an enclosure it is miss labelled on what animal is in there, especially in the aquarium. The river running through is littered with trash and it doesn’t seem like they are to bothered to clean it. Don’t expect much.

My first time ever viisiting the Pretoria Zoo , and there were sooo much i could start comparing to the Johannesburg Zoo Due to the zoo being so big, there were a much bigger variety of Animals to see such as - Gorillas , Camels and a few others which the Johanesburg zoo cannot cater for due to space. I was not happy with the Pretoria Zoo Aquarium it was way too dark to see any fish at all and most of the people inside had to walk around with their mobile flash lights to look into the tanks. We had to wait almost 2 hrs for a Go Cart, so we ended up exploring the zoo by foot it was not as hectic as people make it to seem, slow strolls are lovely and enjoyable. The entire zoo we completed in 4 hrs 🌺 we also sat to have our small picnic so i would definitely choose to walk around for the next time again❤ The ONLY Downside to the Pretoria Zoo and JHB zoo is their TOILET FACILITIES PLEASE DO PAY ATTENTION TO HYGIENE ,AS WE WALKED PASS EACH TOILET FACILITY ..NO SOAP , ALL TOILETS CLOGGED. That was ridiculous! I would love if there was attention paid to hygiene for men and women But in general we had a lovely day ...

It was wonderful becuase it was my daughter's first experience at the zoo, however, I could not get anything to eat or drink, and many of the facilities and exhibits were closed. Staff we're very friendly and I can only imagine the lockdowns have hit them hard. Support them, but bring snacks and drinks.

The zoo looks decent and has a wide variety of animals. Being used to rehabilitation centers and game reserves it looks a little sad and unnatural seeing the animals in small enclosures in the city with all that noise.

The variety of animals was better than expected. There is a lot to see. Unfortunately due to Covid some of the attractions have been closed down. The same goes for the kiosks inside. There are only a few left open now. Hopefully they can recover from Covid and get back up again.

Great family day out. We got there early and it was extremely quite. Golf car really helped us to be able to see more of the zoo, especially with children who get tired of walking. No rides or restaurants were however open but we brought our own drinks and picnic. Signs could be updates and replaced as they have a lot of sun damage but still educational. Some enclosures glass could also do with a cleaning or replacement. But a lovely relaxing way to spend the day.

This place never disappoints and I'm glad it's still holding up so well in the post covid era. There are very few closed or empty encourages but I must mention my disappointment with the closure of the Aviary, as that was a favourite of mine. This is still one of the best day trip destinations in Pretoria . We always prefer to walk but golf cart rentals are available. It's a lovely place to stroll about and enjoy the gardens and benches in between enclosures. The diversity of the animals on offer is still wide and the animals all look well taken care off. There are less icecream places and icecream guys/girls on bikes than before and not all stalls are opened and operational so maybe bring a few snacks of your own plus there are still plenty of areas to picnic.

It was a great experience. Unfortunately, some spaces are under construction and we didn't get to see some animals. I'd advise that one hires the golf cart for two hours as an hour is not enough. It's a good outing for a family with young children. By the time they leave they would be exhausted.

It was my first time visiting the zoo and I enjoyed it and will probably return. There were lots of different animals and the paths and walkways were nice and broad with lots of grass for a picnic. The animals also looked healthy and well looked after. There were parts of the zoo however that looked a bit run down, especially the cable cars that no longer work and seems to have been out of order for a while. We were lucky to be able to park inside so I'm not sure how good the normal parking is.

Very good experience. Lots of animals. Looks like they are kept in good conditions. Quite clean. Some enclosures and signage looks a little tired and in need of painting and upgrading here and there. Must see beautiful bird sanctuary. Must see lion and tiger enclosures. Very large park so I advise making use of the golf cart to get around. Well worth whatever the cost of the cart is. Overall, great day out for families.

Beautiful setting - a must see when you are in Pretoria. Make use of the golf cart facility so that you do not get tired walking and get to see all the animals. They provide you with lovely photographs as memorabilia which you can purchase if you like at a fee of R250.00. Well worth it, I would say its better than the average game drive.

Amazing zoo. Great animal husbandry. Wonderful range of animals. Very friendly staff. Lovely shaded areas to rest, which you will need as the zoo is massive! The aquarium is too often overlooked. The tanks are immaculate and you can see it in how healthy all the aquatic creatures are, and how well the fresh water plants grow. Incredible range of aquatic creatures for such a small aquarium! It is always my highlight of this zoo

  • 2/5 Bernhard S. 4 years ago on Google
Although it was amazing seeing the wide variety of animals they have on show, enclosures had plastic bottles and rubbish lying around - and even inside. This is sickening, that people care so little about the health of the animals they go and see. We further saw a number of animals in poor physical conditions. I really hope they will take better care of the animals and that the general public will keep the zoo cleaner.

I have been very blessed to live and experience Many places around the world. For me the Pretoria zoo is one of the best zoos I have been to in my life and I have travelled far and wide. It's really huge and it's really kept with love and care. It's huge so you will not get bored and you will walk alot so be prepared, they do have golf carts that you can rent that are really fun and definitely help to get around the entire zoo as well as the aquarium. The staff are really amazing with the animals and they really do take are of the animals here. It's a beautiful zoo you can visit in the day and they even have night visits. You can have a conference here s birthday party or private events where you look over the water whole. It's really s beautiful place. Your family will enjoy visiting and if you coming from another country I suggest you visit too. It's really worth it. You get to interact with the animals too which is great and there guides and the staff are really great. There is lovely restaurants inside and the food is outstanding. This is a wonderful place to hold s conference or end year function. Even just to visit with friends family. Great for children but also for those that love animals as they really take the utmost care here. It's pretty impressive. It is worth the price to enter as you are spending the whole day here and think of the animals you helping contribute swell. There is parking nearby and it is pretty safe. This is one of my favourite zoos I have been to in the world. There is also cable cars inside. So you can always go up and walk down. Lovely view of Pretoria, I recommend, if you in the area or visiting Pretoria this is s must. Xx hopefully one day I get to visit again. Beautiful south Africa

My Mshanaz (Nephew/Niece) enjoyed it, that alone makes it a great place for children, it takes you out of the city life....personally I'm not a fan of Zoo's as they are restricting animal from being animal, the river that goes across the zoo was filthy there was dead fish in it, the aquarium not the best it fish tanks stuffed in a wall, I'm no animal lover but there were scenes that were not so nice, like that of a tiger walking up and down like it lost it mind, it was in a confined space for an animal that can take up to 100km of territory size...5 stars because of my mshanaz, great place for a family outing..

It’s a massive zoo with lots to see. I’d recommend that you go early in the morning or late in the afternoon because it gets really hot during the day(especially in summer).. the animals will hide away from the heat.

As pretty the place is, I'm not going to lie, I was way overwhelmed than I thought. We decided to go check out the zoo after a decade of not going because we missed the place, and now that I've visited the place recently, I can tell you that there are animals that aren't there for viewing anymore, animals such as lions, tigers, bears, gorrilas, koalas, sea lions to name the ones we were looking forward to. Not having to see that many animals really destroys the enthusiasm you'd have for the place. The reptiles were at least pretty decent, unfortunately I can't say anything about the aquarium because we arrived late at the place so we didn't get the chance to check it out

Places looks dodgy from the outside but when you go in, everything changes for the better. The staff is absolutely friendly and helpful. P.S take comfortable shoes, a hat (go early for the best experience), drivers licence if you want the golf cart. Students please bring your student cards for a discount. This place has a lot of animals (some in surplus and some in small numbers I.e tigers, leopards, elephants and lions). A wide range of plants with informative tags on them as well as an educational centre. Plenty of maps and staff to help you get to what you want to see. Going to the zoo is worth it, a break from the city and a breath of fresh air. This really beautiful

  • 2/5 Natalie S. 3 years ago on Google
The aviary is full of overgrown plants and smells like all the birds in there have died. The seal and penguin enclosure is "closed for maintenance" but it looks like its been "closed for maintainance" for months. Poor seals are kept in a tiny pool closed off from view. White tiger looked like it was quite sick. Signs are breaking and faded. Too be honest it is quite sad. I suppose all zoos are but there is a distinct air of decay about the place. The staff appear to be trying though.

  • 5/5 joy k. 3 years ago on Google
What a great day spent @ NZG. Disappointed that we didn't get a chance to see the lions. Overall clean. Animals look healthy. Only issue that I had was the amount of litter, bins overflowing and the river that runs through the zoo is heavily littered too. Also some holes in a few walkways that need to be replaced. A few slippery walkways too with no signage to indicate that you need to be cautious.

For one, definitely better condition than the Johannesburg Zoo. Animals are healthier and look happier, there are more of them and the land they are given is bigger. Whilst not a fan of caged operations for animals, one has to think about how their children will learn about them otherwise. We can't all afford an African Safari or trip up the Misty Mountains to look for Silverback Gorillas. For this reason I'm glad the Pretoria Zoo has tried to maintain a good standard - at least from the outside for the animals. The overall management and maintenance could use a LOT of work - there were empty living areas and other areas presumably "under construction" but with nobody working on them. The rates for the snacks and icecream were atrocious - R30 for a soft serve cone. R20 for a packet of jelly tots...that type of thing. At R110 for adults to enter and R75 for kids older than 2, the additional parking pricing (R25) and that of the snacks starts to feel a bit like you're being ripped off. If the right people were put in place and rewarded for doing a good job this zoo can reach the level of awe it held 50 odd years ago. Also, be aware - the zoo is now smack bang in the middle of town, down a one-way road flooded with taxis. Be prepared. All in all this will make a good full day visit with the family, but prepare beforehand - pack a picnic, make time to rest and be prepared to walk as it is a huge property with loads to be seen.

Was really disappointed with my latest visit. Staff were quite unfriendly accross the zoo. Alot of empty or un-maintained cages/enclosures. Quite a few carts were not operational. If the same amount of energy that they put into trying to get you to take/buy their overpriced photos, went into running this establishment, this place would be much better.

Well priced (R110 per adult and free for kids under 2). There are a few stalls selling fast food and lots of different animals to see. The bunny area costs an extra R10 per adult but its worth it for the kids. Its not extremely big like JHB ZOO but is worth the trip. Decent amount of parking but the short dirt road entrance needs work.

Small, very good for toddlers and small children where you may feel you cannot spend the entire day at the zoo yet. The 'tea garden' at the back has everything you need for a light lunch or snack, and even a gift shop. You can feed 2 of the animals upon entering, when buying meal worms for snacks at the entrance, and there is a small play area close to the tea garden. The animals seem well looked after and healthy, even though the cages seem a bit small for the large cats, which saddens me. The price was a bit high for me, for the small size and limited amount of time you can spend there, but I am hoping that the money is well spent, as the place is clean and beautiful.

Loved it, walked through the entire premises more than 5 times and I was not exhausted, as I would be walking through JHB zoo once lol. Animals are very well looked after. Staff is friendly, premise is clean. Braai area clean, place to wash your hands etc. Will definitely recommend to friends and family.

Animals were in good condition, but the grounds and enclosures in general are in a sad state. Some serious cleaning and maintenance is desperately needed. Food options are limited and some exibits are closed or truncated a bit. But otherwise not a bad experience.

  • 3/5 danielle j. 3 years ago on Google
Would have given 5 stars but there's a few concerns to address. There are many activities to do within the zoo which ofcourse requires money, however only cash is accepting. For EVERYTHING. Which would not have been a problem had there been any ATMS on the premise, but nothing. Hiring of golf cart was not possible therefore had to spend the whole day on foot getting from one place to another. It is also extremely costly. Restaurants allow for swiping but be prepared to pay double the amount for everything. Food was also not up to standard. Very dry and bland. The general upkeep of the zoo can also be improved. Toilets were not in good condition. Grass alongside the walking trail can be kept in better condition. It was like walking/hiking through a bush trail. Needless to say, the animals look well fed and taken after.

A zoo is always a sad place to visit. If you really look into animals eyes, you can actually feel their captivity. They don't understand why they are secured in these small spaces. So that being said, l didn't really enjoy my visit. On the brighter side, they raised awareness towards certain animals brutality. And l kind of enjoyed the bird sanctuary or the paradise. It was more

  • 3/5 Pieter Mocke (. 3 years ago on Google
The animals were in great condition, well fed looked like they were well cared for. The facilities on the other hand needs a refresh, signage faded, glass in some enclosures cracked or shattered and a few other odds and ends. Also looks like it just needs a good cleanup crew to blitz the place. Overall a good day out.

Beautiful fun place, great for family outing. Bring ur food and braai stands... Alcohol sold inside. Id recommend renting a cart so u can see the whole area.... Walking is tiring, that place is big esp if you have toddlers. Animals tend to stay inactive and shy during the day after feedings. if u can, be there 9am if seeing feedings is important to you. At the entrance youll take pictures of which you will pay R210 or R240 Overall fantastic place to be.

I really enjoyed, it we went on a Sunday and it was kind of quiet. We hired a golf cart (R200 for 2 hours and a R200 deposit fee) We saw most of the animals and the staff that we encountered were all nice people.

We had a nice Saturday there, the golf carts are expensive at R100 an hour but helpful cause walking around the Zoo is exhausting. It wasn't packed at all & people wore masks & kept their distance, honestly it was clean & well kept but hardly any animals to see but my daughter had a great time seeing the animals, there was also enough parking in the zoo premises.

So clean, unfortunately some activities as well as animals are no longer available. Staff is rather hostile and just want to get rid of you. Unfortunate experience considering it is festive. Would suggest you go there with low expectations, otherwise you will be terribly disappointed. However, make the experience pleasant for yourselves.

  • 3/5 Shamita D. 2 years ago on Google
Not many food/snack options available which is such a pity, so I do recommend taking your own snacks with as there seating areas. Main Entrance Toilets were absolutely filthy & not maintained. Few enclosures were empty. They also take photos of you at the entrance which you can purchase at the exit which is a great idea! However it's a cost of R220!(already printed out & kept ready) what a waste of money for those that do not purchase them?

  • 4/5 Adrian S. 2 years ago on Google
Upon arrival the staff was friendly and courteous. The golf carts were new, clean and reasonably priced. The zoo is spacious the animal enclosures were clean, animals looked healthy. The only disappointing aspect was the lions which were locked in cages could not be easily viewed. Covid protocols were observed. Definitely worth a visit.

  • 5/5 Tenisha 1 year ago on Google
We were lucky enough to visit over the weekend thanks to Gautrains free spree. The Zoo is huge, very beautiful and was packed. Will definitely be going back. However I wish they had more staff doing their rounds to ensure that people stick to the rules. Parents were allowing their kids to taunt the animals and well they just don't care for cleaning up their mess!!!!!! That was literally the most disappointing part and it had nothing to do with the zoo itself.

  • 4/5 Bongani M. 1 year ago on Google
Best experience i had.The animals were fascinating to watch especially the snakes i was disappointed i didn't see the fish and seals and there lions are located too far

  • 2/5 Melanie M. 1 year ago on Google
Expected so much more. Half the enclosures were closed for maintenance. Should have stated it on the website at least. The golf cart is definitely a life saver especially for hot days. Most animals were only single in their enclosure without any mates like the elephant for example. The map is horrible and we had a hard time coordinating through it from time to time. At least there was signs on the walkways for some orientation. The restaurant and ice/drink stands were all closed except for 1 in the beginning. Especially for hot days not really good.

  • 4/5 Yosef C. 1 year ago on Google
Really good zoo. Definitely worth the money to rent golf carts. Though, it was quite unsettling that the hornbills seemed to have broken into some of the parrot cages and were walking round with dead chicks in their mouth 😳

  • 5/5 Ana R. 1 year ago on Google
A wonderful place where you can see the animals up close and see that they are well taken care of . I have had the opportunity to do an internship here and I must say the experience has changed my life. The animals were very well taken care of and the zoo stuff knew each animal by name. Go check up Goliath the rhino and see the blue color in his eyes … what a unique friendly rhino!

The last time I went here, it was when I was doing garde 3. Life happens and I found myself here again at an age of 26 years. I must admit that the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa is no longer the same a before, I'm being honest with e everyone now, it no longer the same Zoo that we'll used to love in such a way that their Animals are being reduced into small amount, I must highlight that I went there and I haven't seen the whole Big 5... I would suggest that they bring more animals compared to now and before... I was happy and excited to be here because my mind were relaxed and cleared but taking what I've said into consideration, Zoo it's no longer the same!

  • 2/5 Sanet B. 3 months ago on Google New
Most cages are empty, the zoo is not the way it used to be, it's sad. No bears, no polar bears, some cages is so small with no water. The saddest part is, the fact that alcohol us allowed, people drink and get drunk, scream and misbehave, we had to find some kind of authority to report this drunk in public disturbance. Another sad thing, is the inconsideration towards the animals, with children buying those noise making whistles, those whistles is extremely disturbing with high pitches, this can't be fair on the animals. The smell of wee by the snakes is disgusting, not to mention the water by the reptile park that's green , polluted and smelly. The beautiful waterfall is so polluted, filled with litter even clothing , in utter disgrace. And those photo taking stalls, is daylight robbery, it is crazy expensive, sho has money to waste Luke that , and then if you don't buy it, it gets discarded??????? Are you even for real, make it affordable for all, and why not maybe use some of that funding towards the sad deterioration of our , once beloved zoo. A stand for the animals should be taken, immediate attention on the managing bodies, that definitely us immediate to blame for this neglect and deterioration.

Had a lovely experience. Even though some areas are undergoing construction, there is still plenty to see. The restaurant offers delicious food at a decent price. I would love to visit again soon.
