I've been in several prisons/jails turned into museums but this one was quite harrowing in terms of the way people were treated. The hierarchical system of treating Caucasians above Asians above black Africans at the lowest end, with poor daily diets and harsh punishments for the mildest to non crimes. Gandhi and Mandela both were prisoners here. Miraculous that two of the most influential men of the 20th century both were oppressed to become such beacons of hope for humanity through non violence, despite the injustices they faced through their lives.

It's good to know South African history. This museum has a prison museum. You can know how native African black prisoners struggled. For using a tripod and professional camera, check with staff. Parking space is available. The entrance ticket is 100 rands(as of 18.Nov.2023)

I am so glad this is a guided tour, so you can learn the in depth history of the South Africa prison where so many of our leaders and regular people were kept in inhumane conditions. Just to think this prison didn't close until 1983 is even crazier. There is also a tour of the court where the 11 justices oversee cases today. This is a must when you visit Johannesburg.

An important place to visit to understand the past, and the future, of South Africa. Although I don't recall there was much about the constitution of Constitution Hill - that would be a good addition.

So informative. Learned things that are not in a text book. Loved every moment of the tour. To walk in Mandela's path was awe inspiring.

The history we learn is ok, but has a different intake when you actually see the places. Well if you really listen it may actually send chills down your spine that some people actually experienced such in the days of old. Otherwise iam glad I got to learn about South African history.

An unforgettable visit to a place with so much heavy energy of power, injustice and oppression. They say there are ghosts that live in that prison. I would say I've felt their presence learning about the history of what was happening in this place! We cannot eradicate the past... We can only learn & let go, to be able to move forward.

Free entrance today on Heritage Day. I can't really find words to adequately describe what to experience here. Its very well worth a visit. Do combine with Red City Bus Tour if you can. South Africa's Highest Court being the Constitutional Court is situated here as well and it is a truly impressive design.

It's so rich in history, a beautiful place to be. Many history lessons to learn from this place. Getting a tour guide would prove best useful to take a tour around the surrounding buildings. The City Sight Seeing Bus services has one of its stops in this area. There is so much history to be learnt, a really great place to come with family for a booked tour. Otherwise, one is allowed to freely roam around the area to l view solely without a tour guide.

A very special place in terms of our country and its past. Important for as many South Africans of all races, young and old to experience it. I was a bit disappointed in the state of some of the facilities on site, but then with the way the country's finances have been misused over the past 20 or so years, there is probably not much budget left to maintain such an important location. The Constitutional Court is a pillar of the country's judiciary and should also be more well maintain. With that said, I still highly recommend a visit to Constitution Hill.

Buying tickets in advance is very helpful because less human contact. And the carport parking is also available free of charge. Make sure you arrive early because there is so much to see and so much to read. Usually on the 21st of March each year there is a human right a festival on the upper tier of the museum. Ticket at R90 for self-guided. 120 for guided tours. This is one of the best museum about South African apartheid make sure you visit it.

The former prison complex houses a museum about its past and the central part is home to the South African costitutional court. It is a very interesting area and worth a visit. In the building of the constitutional courts were some art exhibits when I visited. The staff is very helpful and friendly.

Totally worth a visit. Especially for foreigners. It helps you put a lot of things into context by learning a little more about South Africa and its dark past. It also helps you understand and appreciate the country and its people, especially now when it's under majority rule. There are some things that are off about what's exhibited here especially given what we know today about some of the people celebrated here like Gandhi. The guided tour starts with a visit to the old prison. The place will break you. However, you will be lifted back up and have hope once you take a look at the Constitution Court chambers. The guides are very knowledgeable and make the tour very informative and reflective - of ourselves as humankind and how we treat one another.

This was very impactful and incredibly touching to see how South Africans care about their history, present, and hopeful future. Our guide was very generous in sharing so many important details about such a dark past. And the constitutional court is one of the most inspiring buildings I've ever seen. This is a must see if you come to Johannesburg.

As heartbreaking πŸ’” as it is to remember SA's past because it is still very much part of the present...the Constitutional Hill has done a great job of preserving part of the history and sharing it with the world. I am proud to be a part of the construction team that built the monument, mostly responsible for air-conditioning drawings back in 2002/3 πŸ™ŒπŸΏ. We have come a long way. Tours are every hour from 9h00-16h00 for R120p/p. Lots to see and learn, from the prisons, the living conditions, the food, menus, ablution and shower blocks...and then the Constitutional Court itself. It would be wise to park in the precinct parking because it is quite a walk from the basement parking already before the 1hr guided tour.

I am from Asia, so I know very little about the history of South Africa, but I learned about Nelson Mandela when I was young. Learning about his life in the real place he spent time in is quite exciting for me This place is basically a fort and old prison. You learn about how cruel to prisoners is and so discrimination among white, Indian, colored, and black. I think spending time here 45 mins is ok. I was on tour for 1.45hrs I think it's too much info to digest, personal opinion.

Well organized and informative museum. Visit prison wards and learn about how prisoners were abused before visiting the constitutional court which has used the bricks of the prison in its decoration - turning walls of oppression in to pillars of justice! Thank you Thelma for your informative tour. The area is safe and very affordable (120 rand pp with a tour!)

In diesem ehemaligen GefΓ€ngnis waren Nelson Mandela und einige MitkΓ€mpfer (und frΓΌher Mahatma Ghandi) gefangen. Die FΓΌhrung ist beeindruckend. Das war eine Menschen-Vernichtungsmaschine. Direkt daneben das Bundes-Verfassungsgericht. (Das Personal empfiehlt, den Demonstrierenden KEIN Geld zu geben...)

I took my daughter to Constitutional Hill as a birthday outing, she loved it! The day was filled with bitter sweet memories of how far people of colour have come. It is a lesson for the born frees to appreciate what they have and to know that they need to carry it forward and do better with what they have. In remembrance of those who fought , let their efforts not have been in vain!

I was pleasantly delighted by attending an event here. While the signage to find the parking was missing and at night proves to be a challenge getting into the precinct, the security where helpful and the event area was great, sheltered from the cold winter wind. The toilets cleaned and functional and I would definitely attend another event there.

If You stay in Gauteng and have never been to Constitution Hill you are missing out. It's history and so much more, with skilled guides I suggest you take the full 2 hour tour for just R150. A good outcome Ng for the family, one that will make you think.

A very in depth 2 hour full tour narrating the unbearable conditions that political prisoners together with common criminals lived through. A short 10min video summaries what the entire Constitution Hill Precinct is about before the tour commences. The site guides are very informative & willing to explain the timelines of events for you. The art gallery has some truly thought provoking art pieces for you to interpret.

Such rich history that should be preserved for future generations. What a turbulent and amazing journey the people of South Africa have endured. Although it seems as if history repeats itself in this country although it is in a form that is subtle when you compare it to what South Africans went through decades ago...one can only hope that there will be some drastic change once again in South Africa...one can only hope... A historic space with tremendous meaning however the elderly protesting on the steps of the Constitutional Court, seemingly ignored, was upsetting to see. Why their plight is not addressed forcing them to literally live on the steps of the highest Court in our land does not bode well and leaves a person questioning the manner in which the elderly and vulnerable are treated. Our elders are to be respected not stepped over and ignored.

Amazing place to go too. You get to see both Male(white and black) prison separately, and female( both white and black) prisons. You get to learn how difficult their lives were, how dehumanizing male prisoners felt, how unhealthy the environment was. Hearing both male and female stories of why they were imprisoned. It's so hurt breaking how hard life was during apartheid which is why there a constitution court and it has all the symbols that always remind the judges and lawyers that History must never repeat itself.
