This was my fourth visit to the Rhino and Lion Park and it is absolutely great. There is so much to see. Every 5km we would see animals, the wild cats that were hiding or sleeping all woke up during feeding time which was cool to watch. Entry to the park is R220.00 per person and schedule nothing less than 4 hours to drive around.

This place will be amazing for kids parties and introducing them to animals. The enclosures are well kept and the animals well looked after. The road inside the big cats enclosures are best suted for a vehicle that has a higher ground clearance than usual. We went in a Audi and won't recommend it, but if you have a bakkie or SUV definitely try it out. Was a lovely day and will definitely go back.

Cars can go for safari here, if you don’t have car then you can choose open safari vehicle. There is a feeding time for lions, wild dogs, cheetahs. There is a cave, visit it. This area is safe. The staffs are friendly. It is completely outside of Johannesburg. While returning it would be tough to get taxis using bolt or uber. Come here at 9 or 10 AM and spend enough time here. 3 hours could be enough but with kids, you can spend more time. Photographers must bring good zooming lens.

A really great family friendly day out. Not a far drive from Johannesburg, loads of animals to see - you see them up close and in families and herds. Really great experience to see predator feeding. The reptile show was educational and entertaining and the show was hosted by a fantastic female host... I've never seen a female snake handler before. She really was amazing! The animals are all well taken care of and those in enclosures have a reasonable amount of space to roam. All staff were very helpful, welcoming and knowledgeable. The bike park was a nice extra touch! Kids enjoyed that too. We were really pleasantly surprised by this amazing place. Definitely a must visit for families with kids. Great value for the price. We only didn't get to visit the Wonder Caves because the times overlapped with other activities.

Great nature reserve, definitely a must for the whole family! Their wildlife drives are spectacular especially the 'self-drive' option. Make sure to ask about their events, times and park schedules so that you get the best out of the experience. (The predator feeding is AMAZING to see and worth the effort!) Plan well, the restaurant closes promptly so make sure to have eats on your drive and cater for yourself, we were unfortunately turned away 20 minutes before closing time.

The place is reasonably priced. The staff at the gates are not as friendly as I would expect. The paths are drivable in a normal car but honestly I would recommend a bakkie or SUV would be better if it's a 4x4. I took my ranger 4x4 not sure what to expect and it turned out to be the best choice. The place has quite a vast array of different types of animals. Great for a family outing. You can easily spend the whole day with your family and friends there.

What an incredible all round experience! We started at the wonder caves and worked our way through the predator park. We watched Lions, wild dogs and a cheetah devour a meal. The restaurant has great service with a smile that comes with a wide variety well priced menu. We stayed for a reptile show and was well presented. Will definitely see us again..

This nature reserve is close to Krugersdorp, just off the N14 Road. It is easy to get to I really loved it there, as I got to see 4 of the big 5 animals. I also got to see more than 5 other animals, and I was happy to see the Jackals, for the first time in my life. Luckily I got to see a several animals unlike in some game reserves. They also have warthogs and wow, and a variety of antelopes. Saved the best for last. The beautiful pink flamingos 😍and the pure white swans where my favourite, I almost captured the heart shape created by 2 swans, just missed it by a sec, but that's OK. I recommend this place 101%. If you get a chance, make your way there. Enjoy the pictures

Guided game drive was really nice. My son especially enjoyed the experience. We visit often and do a self drive but the guided game drive is definitely a must!! Really nice about this reserve is you always seeing something, so my son didn't get board between long stretches of not seeing any animals.

Went for a day, to the restaurant. Let’s start with the drive: lovely views of mountains and green trees —felt like a local gateway which was fun. The entrance is clean and well-maintained. This place is popular for their restaurant, but it also offers overnight accommodation and a game drive. We went to the restaurant, the attraction point is *drum roll* feeding the giraffe😅 while you wait for your meal or after your meal, you have the option to feed the giraffe for R50 (how cool). The food was amazing, and well priced. It’s a good place to go for a first-date, birthday celebration or just a simple Sunday family outing. Definitely recommend!

Driving around the enclosures to see the lions and wild dogs was very good. There are also lots of other animals to see in the park, all roaming within a large area. There are other enclosures holding more exotic animals, like tigers, panthers and leopards. These enclosures seem quite small, with less room to roam. Much like a zoo.

The best thing out of this place is visiting a cub centre in the evening time. The routes are well maintained, and support staffs are quick in action if something goes south. I've visited this place more than 7 times, you might be lucky, Cheetahs will take a walk alongside your car. It's fun, super fun! Also, you might find a good view of animals outside the park. Watch out.

This was a beautiful ride, lots of animals to see. We had a guide, so it was a lot easier to get to the animals. Not sure if you drive yourself how easy it is to get around cause that place is huge. Got to see wild dogs being fed around 1pm. White lions were also feeding, my goodness their huge. Overall it was a great experience, definitely doing it again.

Rhino and Lion has a lot to offer. For us, travelling with a 2years old this was the best choice we made during our trip. We will come back and stay longer. There is so much animals and yet the reserve is big, we did see the rhinos and buffalos. The lions, cheetahs and wild dogs are in a separate reserve where you can also self drive. You need to search for specific animals wich had some adventurous feeling to the safari. The reserve has so much to offer, swimming pools, playgrounds for kids, snake shows, feeding activities, restaurants (sadly not all open when we were there). The neck and deck restaurant is beautiful has you can have a coffee looking at the giraffes, zebras and ostriches! We stayed in the log cabins and they have a private jacuzzi over looking the lion park. The double log cabins are brand new, beautifuly decorated, spacious and modern, we loved it. We will definitely be back. We can see that the management is making some great improvement and we can only encourage them to continue. This could really be one of the best family safari reserve of all SA.

You have to go there from 9 am until 5pm. Lot of things to do.. feeding times, wildlife sanctuary, snake and lizards, rhino sanctuary is opposite the road but you wall there, bird watching over the lake pathway & lovely restaurants with kdis playground and splash pools. Definitely a must!

We had a great time. The animals always come out to play. There is even a Trail Run route and Cycling route. The Braai area was clean and had a shade and sitting area. The fee was worth it.."ow much was it by the way?"...can't remember but it was between R250 and R300. Will definitely come back again.

The drive to get to the reserve is scenic and easy to navigate. The tickets office were very helpful. The driver started the drive in time, was very accommodating. He was very knowledgeable and professional. The reserve has a variety of animals that we were able to see and learn about. We did not get to see the lions because we went a day after the feeding so would recommend going on feeding day if you want a sighting of the lions.

A real game farm on your doorstep. Only 40 minutes drive to a game farm that has truly amazing experiences. Lion, white lion, cheetah, tigers and leopards, to name a small percentage of what we got to see. The drive in the park can take you the whole day, if you want, with a large picnic area where you can braai. Definitely worth the drive. Also an amazing place to take your visitors from out of the country to experience wildlife without leaving the city. The "neck and deck" restaurant at the entrance gives you an opportunity to see giraffe close and personal. Food and service at restaurant is average and offering could be better.

What an incredible park so much to do and everyone that is part of the staff are friendly and helpful. The animals look healthy and in good spirits. The game drive was such a wonderful experience and our guide was so knowledgeable and funny. The only down side is the wonder cave wasn't open and they didn't really have signage to say otherwise it would be great if they mentioned it before making the drive up to the gate 5 star experience nonetheless

This is such a beautiful place. There’s a lot of animals to see. 3 restaurant to eat at. Loads of stuff for the kids to do. This place is a must see and you can even feed a giraffe on the deck of 1 of the restaurants.

Very well spent money on a guided game drive around at the reserve. Most of the different animals were visible and the nature in the reserve was really beautiful. The guide was the big star of the tour. She was very informative with a great passion. I can highly recommend this trip.

This is a cyclers paradise. Beautiful area to sit and see wildlife, a few restaurants on site to choose from and a lovely play area right at the top called The Thatch Cafe. I do feel like the giraffe needs a friend and perhaps some big trees in his area hence the 4 stars.

Wonderful nature reserve experience for day visits or sleep overs. Its close and we have visited a few times, One can expect to see White and brown lions, Rhino, Sable, Zebra, Cheetah, Impala, vultures and more. The accommodation is always clean. We stayed in a log cabin with jacuzzi and we could hear the lions during the day and night.

We had a great Valentine's experience at the Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve. The game drive was awesome, saw rhinos in the distance and white & brown lions up close! The dinner at the on site Deck & Neck restaurant was outstanding.

I visited this park on a rainy day and I took the time to go and see the cave. Our guide, Alex, was super insightful and super friendly. It was truly an experience to remember and would go back and do the tour over. After I took a drive around the park and saw many, many animals. I was too blown away by all of it that I barely got good photos! I have a small car, so driving around the park was perfectly fine, you won't need a 4x4. I'll definitely be coming back :)

  • 5/5 Belinda B. 3 years ago on Google
What a pleasant surprise! Only about a 45 minute drive from Johannesburg and you are there in those currently lush green and beautiful surroundings. The animals are so well cared for, thus in such a perfect condition. Truly worth a visit!

Always a pleasant outing in the country. Been many many years since our last visit and the changes and improvements are truly commendable. The rain kept many people away and at times on the 4x4 routes we felt as if we where the only ones there. The animals as always did not disappoint and put on their best displays, albeit that the cats from time to time merely just raised their heads to yawn.

Really awesome way to spend an afternoon. Roads are okay, i was able to go through the whole park in my VW polo. 2nd time i have been there and have not seen the cheetah. (Beginning to think it escaped, keep windows closed) Experience would be way nicer in a 4x4.or SUV. Hippo and giraffe attractions were closed so disappointed there. Close to jhb so its not too inconvenient to get there

We enjoyed our meal. But one criticism we have your charges to enclosur of swans and other birds are to be looked at. We were told to pay at the main desk and take the ticket to the person in charge of the bird enclosure. But your staff were unable to give us one. Plus we saw people just walking through without paying as they came from their cars. Plus there was no notice of tickets sales.

Disappointed in the experience we had at the Rhino and Lion reserve. Took international guests out for the day and we saw a cheetah in a cage, a caged Giraffe, no lions and an abundance of buck. I understand that they are free roaming and that catching sight of these majestic animals is the point of the adventure. But it was honestly disappointing. Spent several hours driving around, in and out the different sections with very little reward. Just my personal experience. I loved this reserve as a child. I even have a scar on my leg from a lion bite when petting was allowed.

Great place to see animals in wild. Saw a white lion crossing the road in front of my car. The size and gaze of lion send chill down my spine. We spent 1 night at Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve for a well deserved break from the city. The drive up from JHB took around an hour and is easy to navigate with your GPS. We stayed at a self-catering lodge and took everything we needed with us. I would advise taking more wood as they provide a small bag but this will not be enough. If you're staying in winter then take some extra blankets. Once we checked in a ranger took us to our unit, which is about a 15min drive on some dirt tracks. The unit itself is fairly basic but has everything you need including a full kitchen and appliances, 2 bedrooms and free standing heaters. The views and quietness are both stunning as one would expect for a place so remote. And animals do sometimes enter the area where the lodges are so do watch out for those. No lions... Feel free to enjoy the jacuzzi on the deck as you watch the sunset.

If you don't have time for the full safari experience at Pilanesberg or Kruger, then you'll get your fill of animals here. You can self drive or get one of the tours, but the experience is best in a 4 wheel drive due to the rough tracks. With the animals separated into large enclosures and published feeding times you're guaranteed to see lots of amazing wildlife in a semi-natural environment - much better than a zoo, but not quite a safari.

The closest you will come to the bush, just a stone's throw away from the city. Make sure you are in the camp at least 30min before feeding time, as it can become very crowded very quickly. Ps don't attempt the 4x4 only routes unless you have good traction and ground clearance.

Great for a quick bush stay. Only an hour from Jozi and you feel like you are in the heart of the bushveld. Interesting sightings of lions. And the rhino are amazing. Lots of beautiful buck to see. Basic accommodation in the log cabins but clean and has all facilities. Highly recommended.

The correct entrance for this is via Neck and Deck. I would strongly recommend stopping there to see the giraffes. It was free to enter the restaurant and go up to the viewing platform. You can buy feed for them too. Good safari style park with self drive or guided game drives available. What the website doesn't tell you are the timings which would have helped! Guided game drives were at 12pm and 3pm when we went and about 2 hours long. Saw quite a few lions, rhinos and others during the drive. Guide was informative too. Note we had serious difficulty with getting an Uber back into the city after the tour ended at 5pm. Even though cars were apparently available nobody accepted the journey. I recommend sorting out the return transport early in the day (e.g. asking the Uber driver who takes you there)

The first time I have visited was about 11 years ago and i loved it. Now they have renovated and its even more beautiful!! The wildlife center is great and the roads are in good condition (i drive a kwid and no problems) and 4x4 trail us marked well. We saw lots of animals and the pretator enclosures are gorgeous (large, lots of Bush/ trees to hide unlike Lion park). Restaurants are placed well in the park. Only thing you need to be aware of: the hippo walk is outside the park - loke opposite the entrance. We missed it. But we will be back soon!

Beautiful views and majestic animal sightings. The retail park is also very informative, including the bird sanctuary. It's well worth it R450 per vehicle for the game drive, you get access to the predator feed at 1pm and reptile show at 2.30. You also have access to view the captive animals, including tiger, hippo, cheetah, leopard, jaguar, panther, lynx, etc. Beautiful place to visit with the family.

I really, really loved this place. Went there with my partner and friends, I would like to go back in summer when we can sit outside and enjoy the view. I had a desert, and it was alright. This is a great place to go to with family or even as friends when you want to unwind and relax also to enjoy nature. There is a biking trail that I spotted , and you can also rent a bike so those activities need a nice hot summer day.

A bit pricey compared to other zoos and national game parks but has the best of both worlds as it combines both zoo type enclosures as well as open game drive areas to view animals in natural habitats. Widest selection of bigs cats i have ever seen, especially ligers which were huge. Also experienced rhino and buffalo very close to our vehicle. White lioness coming directly towards our vehicle was a surreal experience though a bit terrifying at the same time. Variety of leopards in enclosures to be seen along with gorgeous white tigers. Only one of the big 5 we did not see was the elephant. Tons of other animals like ostrich, buck and hippo to see as well a giraffe feeding experience at the restaurant. Given the price would ensure you spend the entire day there to get the best value as there are many other facilities for kids -play areas, slides etc.

Best place!! I highly recommend it. Extremely clean, very well kept animals. My wife and I stayed in the couple's log cabin and it was the best experience.

👍👍 What a peaceful place to visit. The doggy menu is better than the human one, but the food was very "English Pub" rather than "restaurant" quality. But still good. Prices are very reasonable, let's face it, you are going here for a doggie day out.
