I was a Service Provider at the Hall / Venue that is hired out at the Museum. It is an absolutely lovely venue to host an intimate get together. Well manicured lawns and the kids would love access to all the planes and tanks on-site. The hall caters for up to 300 guests. Clean bathrooms as well as a kitchen area to sort out your catering.

Having last visited a few decades ago when it felt a bit "cramped", I was very surprised and impressed when we visited this beautiful place on Saturday. As I'm a SADF veteran, I believe the displays and exhibits are well balanced and capture the history very well. I love the feeling of space in the outside area too. Hats off to those who are keeping our rich military history alive. If I was to suggest a few additions, I miss the Buffel and the SAMIL series of trucks. And regarding visitors' overall experiences at the property, perhaps a coffee shop and a curio shop?

This is an absolutely amazing museum. The exhibits seem well looked after and you can get up close and really look at things. The variety of exhibits is really rich. The famous ME262 is essentially a world heritage aircraft and I can't believe one sits here quietly in South Africa.

Suitable for those who are interested in history, war, vehicles used in war, planes, helicopters. Good for kids. There is an open area where kids can run. There are a lot of benches outside. Taxi drop and pick up is possible in this area.

Unforgettable experience. The prices are R30 per child and R40 adults, no discounts for schools but it's worth it, A lovely man named Hamish explained us everything, with his all pacience to deal with kids, he was just great. He has a big knowledge of wars, he answered all the kids questions and more. We walked all together through that huge Museum and we learned a lot. Thanks, Mr. Amish!!!!!

A Fascinating Journey into Military History Last year, I had the privilege of visiting the South African National Museum of Military History, and it was truly an exceptional experience. This museum is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts, offering a captivating collection of old and new military equipment, artifacts, and exhibits. As soon as I entered, I was immediately struck by the vast array of military equipment on display. From cannons and tanks to planes and helicopters, the museum showcases an impressive assortment of vehicles that span various eras. It was awe-inspiring to see these machines up close and gain a deeper appreciation for their historical significance. I couldn't resist capturing some incredible photos to preserve the memories. One of the highlights of the museum was the submarine exhibit. Stepping inside and exploring the confined spaces of a real submarine was both thrilling and enlightening. It provided a unique glimpse into the challenging conditions faced by submariners throughout history. The collection of military aircraft engines was equally fascinating. The museum has meticulously preserved these powerful engines, allowing visitors to marvel at their intricate designs and learn about their critical role in aviation history. In addition to the impressive machinery, the museum houses an extensive display of weapons, including old guns and machine guns. It was captivating to observe the evolution of these firearms and understand the technological advancements that shaped military tactics over time. The museum also boasts a remarkable collection of uniforms, showcasing the diverse attire worn by soldiers from different eras and regions. This comprehensive display offered a glimpse into the lives of those who served their countries with honor and bravery. I am thrilled to share some of the captivating moments I captured during my visit. Please find attached some of the photos I took, which I hope will convey the grandeur and historical significance of this remarkable museum. Visiting the South African National Museum of Military History was an enriching and thought-provoking experience. I highly recommend it to history buffs, military enthusiasts, and anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of our nation's military heritage. It's an extraordinary place that truly brings history to life.Thank you to the dedicated staff and curators who maintain this invaluable museum and make it accessible to the public. Rating: Exhibits: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Preservation: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Education: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Overall Experience: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Enjoy your visit to the South African National Museum of Military History and be sure to immerse yourself in the rich history it has to offer! Broad collection of military equipment and some military history. Some of the displays appear to be lacking items that were perhaps once there, and lack of lighting inside made seeing / reading some of the displays difficult.

Very good experience. The exhibitions are in great shape. The way the halls are also laid out allows for one to chronologically explore the military history. The tanks and the fighter aircrafts are even more impressive in real life. Definitely a museum to go to with the family, or even by yourself like I did.

very informative with all the writings. although a guided tour would be great. a refreshing corner for coffee and light meals would be wonderful. it'll take half-day to a full day to properly visit all departments, but just remember to save some energy as there is no restaurant on this property

Went there for great experience with 2 primary school children. With loadshedding the halls were closed and we had to turn around. Very disappointing. At least I could take a few pictures through the fence. On the website (that I checked before our long travel there ) there was no mention that loadshedding would result in the halls being closed.

The collection here is a lot bigger than I expected. There is also a great mix of South African military vehicles and paraphernalia as well as German and British war collections from the First and Second World Wars. Descriptions are detailed and a lot of care had gone I to curating the exhibions. Definitely a must-do at least once for any local. The tanks were my favorite!

Truly interesting as had family who lost their lives in the Second World War as well as ones who were prisoners of war. A bit diappointing with some of the exhibits, not all are relevant to war and should be at other museums that commemorate certain aspects of history in SA. Security officials lounging around do not inspire one either. Overall well worth the visit though, plan on spending at least four hours to appreciate what is on display.

The museum makes for a very nice outing and overall, everything is fairly neat. But it is obvious that upkeep and curation are not the order of the day. When we were there, there were many displays that were not labeled; in the halls, many lights were not on so some display were not easy to view. I understand that the museum was closed for a while due to the pandemic, but now that everything is up and running again, there should be no excuse for the place not being well-maintained and presented. It is sorry to see history going lost due to lack of interest in keeping everything organized and documented. The same, I think, should apply to the cafeteria that used to operate there before; there should be a place to buy something to eat and drink again and to enjoy that at the tables outside. I think there are a number of things that could be done to make the museum more appealing and attractive, as the displays of vehicles is very interesting. Perhaps employing a curator (and firing the existing one, if there is one) should be the first step.

I was last here over 45 years ago... good to see some of the same exhibits but also sooo much more! Great setting. My 10 year old son (who is a WWII plane fanatic) loved it. Only 4 stars for two reasons: no snack shop or curio/memorabilia shop, and the hall with the Hurricane and Spitfire was dark and the exhibits very dusty.

Tucked away next to the Zoo is an extensive & well kept collection of military vehicles, subs, planes, armoured cars and more…that could very easily rival the collections of other internationally renowned military museums. The halls are well organised and the information boards are comprehensive and interesting.

In a nutshell, the museum is a niche attraction. Not for the average person. But anyone who has interest in military history will not be disappointed. It's also a fascinating destination for young minds. My biggest gripe is that when I visited it 50 years ago, kids were allowed inside some of the exhibits. This increases the pleasure and interest immeasurably. Unfortunately, this is no longer permitted

Without a doubt, my absolute favorite museum! The collection of 4 Nazi planes is literally priceless - representing only a handful of those remaining world-wide. The 1-man submarine and the South African Airforce jets are spectacular, along with the legendary G5 and G6 cannons and a big variety of WWII Allied tanks. A comprehensive collection of firearms, uniforms, swords and Allied planes is completed with little treasures in between, in the form of models, artifacts, fascinating stories, and character portrayals. And don't forget the moving monument in the yard outside!

Beautifully restored artifacts of South African military history. Every place has a history to it, however, there are very few people who appreciate and make time to indulge in the past. One should not miss the military museum if interested in history. I hardly knew of South Africa's role in the world war till I visited the museum. I took the red bus to tour Joburg however, spent half a day in the museum for the wonderful artifacts they have.

Beautiful museum. There is a wide variety of historical information and antiques to view. There are things you can touch and some you cannot touch . The museum is centrally located next to the JHB ZOO and the entrance fee is quite cheap. I wish there was some signs inside the museum to make navigating the museum easier and quite interesting . There are lots of real planes and tanks to see.

Collection is great. Such a nice place to see part of history and learn. For kids to observe. But Organisation: -Main gate guard had a mask on neck! When as a Dr, I advised him, he got upset! And wanted to take my temperature. So I had to insist .... -There was only one hand sanitizer that was on entrance door but not working! Then nothing in different halls! -No guide to ask questions! They can put big signs of the Year for the machinery to organize some structure for visitors to understand better. Does museum have a Curator?!? I still don’t understand why a Buffalo head in a military museum! It didn’t have any sign! -Many information signs were either too dusty or not readable! And no tap around to wash! -No visitor notebook to write comments! Photo attached here. -Rubbish even inside some of machines! Photo attached here. -Some visitors weren’t having mask too! I feel sad. Increase the ticket fee and keep this National heritage in a better shape!

Awesome museum with so much to see and very well laid out. Spotlessly clean with all the brass work on the big guns shined to a high gloss. Great place to visit especially for history buffs. There is something ethereal about the war museum. Every exhibit and display offers intrigue...however hauntingly quiet...you cannot help but contemplate those who both sacrificed and lost their lives during war-time. It is a pity you cannot take photos in both the Adler and Brink Hall - that is by far the most interesting exhibits.

I base my reviews on service received from frontline personnel including security. That experience usually or mostly set the trend. And, in this case we were greatef warmly at the boomgate the at frontdesk. The rest of the experience, well, is pretty much we've seen it all. But my son had a blast. Therefore a 5 star rating. A surprisingly interesting museum. Wonderful collection and display of memorabilia of the World Wars that South Africa participated in as well as displays on South Africa military history. My only complaint was when we left we decided to put a small donation into the donation box in the main foyer by the ticket office however when we tried to put money through the small opening of the donation box, the money would not go down and was open to be being pulled out/taken by anyone. We brought this matter to the attention of the person in the ticket office and the security guard on duty in the foyer and they informed us that the donation box was full. If it was full then there was a lot of money in it because it is a large donation box. They also informed us that the curator had the keys for the box so they could do nothing about the fact that the money donated into the donation box is completely open to stealing. Please do something about this, because the money donated is meant for the museum and not for the staff or any other individuals.

As a veteran who served in the SADF It is great to know that fallen comrades are remembered. A first class museum by international standards. Weapons from both world wars, Korea and the border wars. Vehicles, planes and even a sub. Tanks, uniforms, insignia, you name it it is probably here. They have walls of remembrance and special displays for Parabats and, 32 Battalion units. I have been visiting this museum for the past 40 years.

"Preserved" equipment rusting and decaying. Covered under layers of dust and grime. Like the rest of Jhb, in heartbreaking decline. As can be expected, non related government agenda rammed down your throat on entry.

Amazing array of history and machines of war in all shapes and sizes, with particular emphasis on South African history and involvement in wars since the late 1800s. What would be nice is a little more info on particular items, such as how one comes by a Russian T-34 on the tip of Africa. What would be nice to see is more information on liberation armies and perhaps tribal militaries in Africa, seeing as there are entire exhibits dedicated to 32 Battalion. My son always wants to go to the 61 Mech exhibit to ride the Ratel video game (as he calls it) but I never know how to switch it on. Maybe those small details could be improved on, but overall it's amazing to see Spitfires, Hurricanes, Mossies and tons of other incredible history right in Johannesburg, and dirt cheap as well.

The displays are amazing. There are things there you would never expect to find, and I make a point to go there whenever I travel to Johannesburg. Sadly, some of the displays aren't labelled. That being said, the museum director was incredibly rude to guests and staff. What a pity. Ruined an otherwise great outing.

A definite must visit for anyone that's interested in military history or anything mechanical. The vast amount of displays is absolutely insane! • 3/5 Eugene V. 1 year ago on Google
Such an awesome museum with extremely rare pieces. Great finds if you know what to look for. Just some of the exhibits don't work anymore (RR moving engine) and for someone with bifocals, its impossible to read signs on the ground or behind glass. Guides need to speak clearly and annunciation counts.

  • 5/5 Mumtaz S. 1 year ago on Google
This has to be one of the most underrated places in Johannesburg. The military museum is amazing for all kids including those pesky teens. I can add that if you pack a small picnic basket you can enjoy the lush green and turn it into a great day out. It’s not a big place and it will take about an hour max to see it all. I do advice that you hire a tour guide to spark curiosity and interest. South Africans pay a special rate and it’s super affordable from about R45 an adult and school children and children are R30. If you having a staycation or looking for an educational trip for kids, this is a perfect outing. There is no coffee shop inside so pack snacks and juice for the kids.

  • 5/5 Patrick E. 9 months ago on Google
Bit chaotic but excellent exhibition pieces, great selection of 20th century objects incl. Tanks and a number of airplanes If you're mostly there to look around and get some info on the objects presented without needing a clear story line I can highly recommend it. Admission was R80 for an international adult (R50 for SA adults)
