This place is to remind of us how terrible the earthquake was in 1995. Almost more than 20 years ago it happened here. The park is nicely presented to people who are visiting here. It could be nothing but somehow Japanese made this place special to remember it or to record and show how terrible it was for the next generation. If I didn’t come here and see it in my own eyes I would never know how terrible the earthquake is and how powerful it is to destroy everything.

Impressive view to a tragic history. Similar to Hiroshima, this is another place to feel how close tragedy and modern, bustling, happy life is in Japan.

It's a small area located in meriken park near the port. You can learn about the great earthquake that happened in Kobe in 1995 here. There are several wall pictures. Also there is a documentary movie that you can play in several languages which will tell you about the details of the event and how they managed to rebuild the area. It's all open air and free of cost.

The Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park is a part of the Meriken Pier whose 60-meter breakwater has been damaged in the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. It has been preserved in this state and is currently maintained for visitors to be able to view it safely. There is also an exhibit of films and images showing the state of the earthquake victims at the time, the restoration process, and more. Experience the terror brought on by the earthquake firsthand here at the Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park.

Very sobering monument to the lives lost. But also impressive how quick they got it going again. Would have been nice for a little more on the rescue attempts and the impact on the local citizens. This is very much focused on the damage on the port.

A nicely preserved memory of the earthquake that shook the port of Kobe. Small area but it deserves a visit while in Japan. Easily connected by the rail network from Osaka or you can use the JR pass conveniently. Less crowded and lively by seaside.

The Kobe Earthquake was etched in my memories from TV pictures of collapsed highways & buildings the year that it occurred & have always been on my list to see Kobe, besides the beef which is another artieries choking chapter. Well documented outdoor memorial by Merikkan park detailing the horrific devastation & lost of thousands of lives. Incredible to see how the people of Kobe have bounced back as a community

This is a memorial park for the Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995. There is a video presentation in both English and Japanese. Part of the ruins of the original walkway have remained in remembrance of the event.

Good spot for a sunny morning walking. But unfortunate to see what happened in 1995. Some pictures exposed in English as well. Starbucks right in the corner.
