The Van Gogh exhibit was just.. “okay.” Essentially, the “Van Gogh Alive” exhibit is little more than a PowerPoint presentation of Van Gogh’s artwork with a few added special effects (fade in/out, minimal animations and background music.) One thing that I thought was weird was that the biography of Van Gogh written in Japanese (located at the entrance before the exhibit) had been condensed and given a G-rated feel. For example, the bio had mentioned that Vincent was in an asylum, but it didn’t mention that he ended up in the asylum due to a combination of epilepsy, alcoholism and syphilis (and how some theorize these diseases as having an effect on his latter painting style.) That information (though depressing) might have been useful to some of the patrons- I overheard several guests wondering why Van Gogh’s earlier “Dutch” style was so different from the style he developed while living in France. The crowds were horrendous because of the public holiday, but because the wide layout of the gallery, over-crowding had little effect on the experience. It was my first time at this museum, and I hope to come back. The facilities as a whole are incredible and the usher-staff worked tirelessly to keep the guests moving in and out. In summation: Three stars for the exhibit, five stars for the facility as a whole.

It's an impressive museum with an unique structure. The exibition space is massive and there is also a section about the architect who designed the building. From there you should go out onto the viewing platform and wonder around the external space of the museum.

However, you will have to keep your stuffs in the locker. They have paintings, mixed-media, statues, architectures and also a few digital media too. You can see a river view outside and a souvenir shop too. There is no snack, food, or drink stalls here.

Ando's work and museum. Not exactly a big museum so you come here to enjoy the space and appreciate the architecture more than the art installation.

Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art is modern and contemporary art museum. The building itself is a piece of art designed by Tadao Ando. Make sure not to miss their Special Exhibitions

Great museum with beautiful architecture! Last time I went for Studio Ghibli's exhibition, completely worth it! The museum is in front of the sea and very close to the mountains as well! Nice place for sightseeing!

Beautiful building and exhibitions. Entry was free when I visited due to being on a certain day of the week/month. That meant only entry for the Fashion Exhibition was charged seperately. All-in-all some interesting pieces, however this Museum is worth a visit just for the sculpture and design of the building itself.

I love the architecture of this building and the general design. It's really chic, modern, and thoughtful. During my visit, I was able to see three exhibitions. The Van Gogh Alive, Dinosaur Dreams, and the permanent exhibit. I was able to purchase a combined ticket to the disnosaurs and the normal exhibition for $23. The Van Gogh one was an addition $25. I felt like both tickets were very overpriced for what you experienced. Van Gogh alive was definitely enjoyable, but it was one room with one experience. I can hardly count the sunflower room or the bedroom replica since both were really just for pictures and used as the entry/exit. I expected more from a $25 entry fee than projections of Van Gogh paintings with some quotes here and there. It was especially hard to enjoy as there were so many people in the room obscuring the screens. Dinosaur Dreams is really cool. Being a Dino fan myself, I found it particularly enjoyable. I felt a bit frustrated that 90% of the paintings could not be photographed or videoed, though. It felt strange given the fact that these are paintings of actual animals and not original ideas per se. The paintings were displayed well but lacked much information about each item other than the name and painter. The permanent paintings on display are all splendid, and it was a pleasure to look at them, but there were so few. I really felt like the money I spent on accessing the exhibits would have spread much further in other galleries/museums.

After seeing the special exhibition by Nakaji Yasui, I was able to take a leisurely walk to Sannomiya via Toshima Shrine and Minamigu Usa Hachiman Shrine.

The art museum designed by Tadao Ando is wonderful, and the collection is of a fairly high standard. I recommend visiting.

Great Art Museum where you can enjoy a good selction of art work and beautiful architecture. We only entered the permanent exhibition area, but it was enough to occupy us for hours. The curator did an excellent job in selecting a wide variety of art pieces from both local and international artists feature both modern and classic work. Lighting, framing, and placement of the work are done really well. We especially like Western style painting by Japanese artists, which offer a unique blend of east and west. I saw Tadao Ando works from the photos many before, but this was the first time i experienced his work up close. Now i understand why this self-taught architect has received so much fame and praise. The simple design, material selection, and use of space provide a zen like experience. We visited the museum in the late afternoon, and the sun was setting by the end of our tour. So It was lovely to walk along the river watching the sun set. It took us around 2 hours to explore both art and Ando museums, but because we have a plan for dinner. Otherwise, we could have spent more. However, if you have no time, 1.30 hours should be enough. The ticket cost 500 jpy for the permanent exhibition and 1800 jpy for special exhibition or 2100 jpy for the combined ticket.

The building itself is a piece of art. The main explanations to the collections are also in English but any other explanations throughout are not. Mixture of art, some free to visit and some paid.

Eclectic permanent collection which costs 500 yen from memory. Some pieces are interesting, some are pretensious, some are boring. Most people will find something interesting

The reason I visited Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art the other day was not Lee Ufan holding now. It was a permanent exhibition of paintings and calligraphy from the Ming Dynasty and Qing dynasties in China. I don't know much about it, so I won't give a clear explanation, but it seems that the works I thought were good were also highly evaluated among experts. Do you simply think that a work that feels good on your retina is good?-------Experts say that he is fine with that. After all, calligraphy and painting are all about balance. I guess momentum and brushstrokes speak for themselves.

A great museum with a large permanent gallery. The building itself is also designed as a piece of art and certainly adds to the atmosphere. At a price point if 500¥ it's worth seeing. Titles of works are provided in Japanese and English and directional signage is also provided in both. Pamphlets about the exhibits are Japanese only however.

Permanent exhibition costs 500 yen If you visit the special exhibition which included with permanent exhibition it will cost around 1300 yen Overall I love it, especially the touchable art pieces created by blinded artist. It was so touching, literally. The museum architecture was really interesting. There was Ando Tadao’s show room, an architectural team which created many beautiful places in Japan including this museum.

I went here with my girlfriend for attending my school exhibition event last month in February. The location was quite far from Kyoto (it’s far.. sorry haha) but the location itself is good bcause in front of the building is a harbour..? Hmm kind of. When i went there, there was a van gogh exhibition but I didn’t go there. The weather was extremely windy and i barely moved forward loll but it was fun tho haha

Large Ando designed building, makes for impressive spaces inside. Collection is of high quality, mostly Japanese 20th century, but some international works as well. An enjoyable place to visit.

I visited it one the second Sunday in the month so it is free for some exhibitions. The most signature landmark is the green apple and deserve to take a picture with it. I love the vibe of the museum. Everyone are quiet and focus on the picture. You can take a look of it because it also near the ocean.

I wish they had an all-entrance fee and more to show. The exhibitions were beautiful. The presentation was very impressive.

Visited in Sep 2023. It has been 10 years since my last visit. The building has been very well maintained. It was also good to see the giant green apple and Ando’s free entry exhibition on his projects.

The collection is nothing to write home about, but the building is impressive - designed by Tadao Ando.

  • 5/5 Adriano B. 11 months ago on Google
Designed by Tadao Ando. If you're only interested in the building itself you don't have to pay entrance since many parts of it can be visited for free. There is even a small Ando Museum (free).

Large impressive museum, contemporary and traditional art, nice cafe and store, helpful staff.

There was a Van Gogh Alive exhibition at the time of visiting. Art in and of itself is not a real interest. I was there for the architecture. Tadao Ando is a personal favourite of mine. The exhibit was very busy being a Sunday. The Ando Gallery is a great addition for architects and architectural buffs.
