In 1891 (Meiji 24), the so-called "Hyogo Great Buddha" was erected within the shrine grounds with a donation from the wealthy merchant Nanjo Shobei, and in May 1944 (Showa 19), this Great Buddha was dismantled and given to the government under the Metal Collection Ordinance. It was counted as one of Japan's three great Buddha statues before the war. (Incidentally, the "remaining" statues are the Nara Daibutsu and Kamakura Daibutsu at Todaiji Temple, but the rest differ depending on the time. In the Edo period, the Kyoto Daibutsu was located in Hokoji Temple, before the war, it was the Hyogo Daibutsu, and after the war, the current Takaoka Daibutsu was in Toyama Prefecture. It seems that the Gifu Great Buddha in Gifu Prefecture is often mentioned.) In addition, the current Great Buddha was apparently rebuilt in 1991 (Heisei 3) by the chief priest who discovered the dismantled Great Buddha and used the metal pieces mixed in with it when it was rebuilt. It is a huge seated statue of Nabutsu (Komyo Hensho), which weighs about 60 tons and is 11 meters high.If you include the lotus stand and pedestal, it is 18 meters tall.

The Hyogo Giant Buddha built in 1891 was one of Japan’s top three Giant Buddhas. It was melted down for its metal during WWII, and today’s Giant Buddha was built in the same spot in 1991 on the 100th anniversary of its predecessor. They say that if you make a wish to the Buddha, it will come true. Today it is relatively unknown as it is not in a location frequented by tourists, but it is a great contrast between the ordinary and special as it is in a residential district. Worth a visit.

Nofukuji Temple is not far from JR Hyogo Station, and there is Aeon Shopping Mall Kobe Minami, which is convenient for shopping, so this is my route. Sometimes I stop by to find a quiet spot. The place where the Great Buddha is enshrined is outdoors and harmonizes with the sky, and the main hall in the back was built in Shoren-in, Kyoto, so it has a slightly elegant feel. It has a friendly atmosphere, which is what makes it my favorite place.

This thing is HUGE. The most interesting part is that is in the middle of the city. Yes, japan if full of temples next to the modern life, but this buddha is Huge and is not inside a big temple and with a lot of space that makes it "fit". It will surprise you is a great way.

The seasonal pattern, the autumn leaves and the sight of the Great Buddha were wonderful. It is located inside a temple called Mt. Hosakuji Nofukuji, which was built by Saicho. I was surprised that there was such a magnificent Great Buddha in Hyogo.

(Translated by Google) The Three Great Buddhas of Japan. It suddenly appears in the city, so when you find it, you will get excited. If you imagine the Roshana Buddha in Nara, it's a little small around the lid. There was also a main hall that was relocated from the Seiren-in Temple in Kyoto. Is there a connection with the Emperor? There is no parking lot, so it would be nice to park your car at a nearby coin parking lot.
