Let me tell you first, there's a Rs. 50 entry fee here and it's absolutely worth paying for it especially if you are someone interested in Kerala history. There's a lot that you can see and learn about Kerala in those times and Gundert as well. There's audio visual instruments to supplement your experience. The Government of Kerala has made a great effort trying to establish something like this. The Bungalow and the museum is being run with the help from Tubingen University in Germany. There's his writing, the first dictionary in Malayalam is also on display here. You can put one letter into the slot and it'll show you all the words in the Gundert dictionary!. You can also see his Bible translation into Malayalam as well. A must visit.

Gundert Bungalow, nestled in the scenic landscape of Thalassery, Kerala, is a site of immense historical and cultural significance. Built in 1839 by Dr. Herman Gundert, a German missionary, scholar, and lexicographer, this architectural marvel served as his residence for two decades. Dr. Gundert is renowned for his contributions to the Malayalam language, including compiling the first Malayalam-English dictionary and translating the Bible into Malayalam, much of which was accomplished during his stay at this bungalow. The bungalow, set amidst lush greenery, overlooks the Arabian Sea and presents a picturesque setting that combines natural beauty with historical gravitas. Its architectural style is a blend of traditional Kerala and colonial designs, reflecting the cultural fusion of the time. Historically, the Gundert Bungalow played a pivotal role in the educational and cultural development of Kerala. Dr. Gundert established one of the first Malayalam schools in the region here, laying the foundation for formal education in the local language. The bungalow was not just a home but a center for linguistic and cultural exchanges, significantly influencing the Malayalam literature and education system. Today, the Gundert Bungalow stands as a testament to Dr. Gundert's legacy, attracting scholars, historians, and tourists alike. Its preservation allows visitors to delve into the life of a man who shaped the Malayalam language and literature, offering insights into the intellectual history of Kerala. The bungalow's historical importance is further amplified by its connection to other cultural icons, including being the birthplace of modern Malayalam poetry and prose. Visiting the Gundert Bungalow offers a unique opportunity to explore the historical and cultural narratives that have shaped Kerala, making it a cherished landmark for those interested in the region's rich heritage.

Gundert Bungalow  is very crucial in the history of Malayalam language. The revered German priest and lexicographer Dr Hermann Gundert who was the compiler of first Malayalam dictionary and the publisher of the oldest Malayalam newspaper, lived here for 20 years. Hence the bungalow witnessed the birth of a dictionary and a newspaper in Malayalam language. Gundert bungalow is around 20 km from Kannur.  Thalassery bus stand and Thalassery railway station are very near to Gundert Bungalow. This historical monument grabs attention of visitors mostly during the months from October to May. Currently Nettur Technical Training Foundation (NTTF) functions there.

A perfect example of how a place of historical importance is let to die on its own. The bunglow as such donot have anything to see, right now NTTF college works in the premises. 1 star for the historical importance

Gundert Bungalow Gundert Bungalow was the home of the German missionary, scholar and lexicographer, Dr. Herman Gundert, who has given invaluable contributions to the Malayalam language. Dr. Gundert stayed at the bungalow, at Illikkunnu, Thalassery, for two decades. It was in 1839 that he settled down here. Dr. Gundert was instrumental in bringing out the first Malayalam dictionary in 1859 and the first Malayalam newspapers, Rajyasamacharam, which was followed by Paschimodayam. It was while he stayed at this bungalow that he laboured long and hard at these dream projects. He also started a school in the building in 1839. The bungalow has wide verandahs, huge doors and other features of a typical colonial mansion. However, it is its history more than its architecture that attracts visitors. Getting there Nearest railway station: Thalassery, about 4 km

We as a family visited this place on 9th Sep 2022. There's a lot of mentioning in the reviews below about how this historic place was poorly maintained and left behind. If you are disappointed after reading some of the reviews below, the good news is that, things have changed and this time, for good. This place now has a museum functioning there and is well established and well maintained. This place now is managed by the District Tourism Promotion Council and they have done a great job of restoring this historic site and converting it into a wonderful museum.

Great experience. It is an informative journey to the life of a great personality. The view of the river from the backyard of the bungalow is so delighting. More than a museum, feels like a place to sit and enjoy the nature and relax.

Gundert Bungalow was the residence of Dr Hermann Gundert, a German missionary, scholar and lexicographer who is remembered for his invaluable contributions to the Malayalam language. In 1839 CE, he settled down and lived here for almost two decades. Situated at Illikkunnu, which is 4 kms from Thalassery, this bungalow witnessed several initiatives in the cultural history of Thalassery. The first Malayalam newspapers, Rajyasamacharam and Paschimodayam came out from the litho press set up at the bungalow. The bungalow was also instrumental in triggering social reform activities by providing English education and enhancing women’s means of livelihood by the setting up of tailoring unit classes.

It's a historical place that located in thalassery near NTTF college. It's not a must visit place for tourists. But if you are interested in historical things you should visit here. Dr herman Gundart is known for the first person who made English malayalam dictionary .

A place of historical importance. Herman gundert lived here working on Malayalam grammar and gifted Malayalam with dictionary, grammar and corrected lipi. The museum is also digitally equipped with modern facilities for the visitors to explore him and his works. The sad thing is that the bunglow now is only the building and it's walls. Everything else are new additions. His press, books, belongings etc. are not available here for the visitors.

The place is designed well, neat and well kept, but i hv no opinion of the information assistant. Because she just disappeared when i took my own time to read and enter another room. When she came back, i told i already read what u were supposed to tell and she is rudely replying.. Just listen to what i say. No need to tell that you read.. Is this the way to behave to guests? Later she behaved ok as i never made an issue. But i feel like telling. Otherwise, the place and staff were good. A great way to know more about Dr. Gundert, good memorial. Also, having AC or atleast fan would be good.
