Sree Kurumba Bhagavathy Temple also known as Kodungallur Devi Temple, is at Kodungallur, Thrissur District, Kerala. It is dedicated to the goddess Bhadrakali, or Maha Kali a reincarnation of Parashakthi worshipped in Kerala. The goddess is also called Sri Kurumba .This temple is considered the head of 64 Bhadrakali temples in Kerala. As per legends, Parasurama (avatar of Vishnu) was troubled by the demon Daruka. Parasurama prayed to Lord Shiva to help him. Shiva opened his third eye and thefigure of Kodungallur Devi is beleived to have been born from his third eye. As per historical scriptures the temple history actually dates to the Chera period and is said to have been built to commemorate Queen Kannaki's martyrdom( Kannaki a devout wife of King Kovalan, who was wrongfully accused of being a thief and sentenced to death by a Chola king of Madurai - referenced in Silapathigaram by Ilangovadigal). Kannaki was considered to be a reincarnation of Durga or Kaali. Temple location The temple is around 33 kms from Ernakulam and 18 kms from Irinjalakuda and is located about 1.5 km from the Kodungallur bus stand. Temple TimingsFrom 4:00 am to 12:00 noon and 4:00pm till 8:00pm Parking area available.

I visited the temple and found the dress code to be quite restrictive, allowing only men in vests without shirts. While I respect tradition, I believe it's important for places of worship to be inclusive and welcoming to all. It would be beneficial to consider a more inclusive dress code to accommodate diverse visitors while maintaining the sanctity of the temple.

Kodungallur Kurumbakavu Bhagavathi Temple, popularly known as Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple is located about 1.5 km southeast of the Kodungallur bus stand. It is assumed that the placement of the idol of Kannaki was done about 1800 years ago by Cheran Chenkuttuvan of the Chera dynasty. The presiding deity of the temple is Bhadrakali (Goddess Kali). The shrine is crowded on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and is busy during the Sabarimala season as well. The most famous festival of Kurumbakavu temple is the Bharani festival or Kavutheendal, which starts on the Bharani asterism, as per the Malayalam month of Meenam (March-April). The animal sacrifices that once were part of the festival in this temple are now banned, but the pilgrims still drink liquor and sing lewd songs, all the way from their villages to the shrine, as part of the ceremony. At the end of the festival, the temple closes and opens on the seventh day, after the Aswathi asterism. Another important festival at this temple is the Navarathri.

Chettikulangara Amma (the main deity) is the daughter of Kodungallur Amma, brought to that place for the well being of all people at Onattukara (Mavelikara). I have gone to Kodungallur Temple from Guruvayur Temple. Bus charge was Rs.44. Diety of kodungallur amma is very big. You can see the amma from outside also very clearly. On side of amma, there is lord siva. Other deities residing outside are Kshetrapalakan, VasooriMala etc. Kshetrapalakan diety is very tall, you have to bent down & see the gods face inside the temple. There are lots of trees, each belongs to particular committee. During meena bharani, a velichappad representing the committee performs near their tree with sword. Main event of Bharani festival is the Aswathy Kaavutheendal, held on the day prior to Bharani asterism. And on this day devotees can witness a sea of red overruns the premises as a flurry of oracles (velichappad) dancing in a trance offer their prayers to the deity. It is a mystical experience for all who have a chance to view it. The devotion of the believers as they dance along with the oracles with spiritual euphoria is a truly riveting sight.

Shri Bagavathy Amman in Kodungallur temple is Aadhi Parasakthi and is considered head of 64 Sakthi Shetrams in Kerala. Very revered and powerful Shri Bagavathy Amman deity with eight arms, in the sanctum is facing North. Lord Shiva in seperate sannidhi. As per legend Kannagi of Tamil epic Silappathigaram attained salvation/divinity here. The surrounding premises of the temple require better maintenance.

Lovely and holy place in the resign. Beautiful and very much powerful devi of kerala. Pray with heart and mind will be blessed. Lovely arrangement of management, counters were arranged properly and user friendly (faced little language issues) but all settled.with due coarse. Very old temple, where we can see the kerala style typical temple. In the evening it's awesome where all the lights were lighted up and it adds to the beauty . Prasadam is awesome which is well packed and u can carry it. Regular prasaad is nice and ghanda they give and banana. Temple.ia very old, beautiful and peaceful. Huge area surrounded by the trees and it's situated in the small.and beautiful city. Greenery every where and plenty of trees with fresh air and oxygen. Near to thrissur. During my stay I visited daily, arari will.be at 6.30. 6.20 they close entrance and 6.30 they open.

Kodungallur Bagavathy temple is located about 28 Kms from Cochin in the Thrissur district of Kerala State in India. Goddess is a form of Mahakali and the presiding deity is referred to as Kurumbha Bagavathy. Legend has it that the Bagavathy slayed the demon Daruka and relieved sage Parasurama of his distress. The speciality of the temple is 6 foot figurine of the Goddess made of wood. Temple timings 4 am to 12 noon and 4 pm to 8 pm. Spacious car park with eateries is a boon to the devotees. Must visit temple when on a pilgrimage in and around Thrissur district.

Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple is one of the famous temples in Kerala. Ever since I heard about this religious place, I got a chance to visit it 3 times in my life. During my last visit to God's Own Country, I went to the Temple on a hot and sultry Sunday morning. It was extremely crowded as devotees flocked the Temple during Navaratri. There was a massive line, so we did not go inside the main building, but prayed from the outside. As always, I got a divine feeling when I was walking in the Temple Premises. It was such a beautiful sight to see everyone all decked up in their best attire, flowers adorned in their hair and kids laughing and running around as if they did not have any worries in the world. I wanted to take lots of photos so was clicking away as I took the steps around the premises. Just as my family and I were about to leave, a lady came up to me and asked me in Malayalam if I got the Prasadam. So I told her that we did not as it was totally crowded. Upon hearing this, she held out the betal leaf which had chandanam (Sandalwood Paste) smeared on it - and flower bunches and offered it to us. I felt so happy and blessed at that moment. I thanked her, turned and started walking towards the car. Then suddenly it struck me that I forgot to ask her name. So I turned and started walking, but the strangest thing is, I did not find her! Though I looked left and right, there was no sign of her. It was as if the Deity had come in the form of the Devotee and was the one who had offered us the prasadam. There is a saying in life, "Third Time Lucky" and coincidentally, this was my third visit to the Temple. If you visit Kodungallur, please ensure you visit this Temple.

Nice and serene place. The temple is well maintained, and the aura is unmatchable. It's located in the center of Kodungallur so everyone can easily reach here. Usually, the rush is not much and will get enough time for praying.. The car and bus parking area is spacious so that usually we will get accommodated there easily. There are small restaurants nearby for quick snacks. The ficus trees around are a treat to watch.

Review on 10th June 2018 A Spiritual Experience that is so surreal and have to be there to experience it. A must visit place if you are in Central Kerala. Fairly good quality Accomodation (We stayed in Hotel Indraprastham) A Temple built by Cheraman Perumal, dedicated to Bhadrakali & she is often praised by the devotees as Kannaki and Muthumari in Kodungallur. Another speciality of the place is the Kshetrapalakan who is believed to be growing larger Review on recent visit Visited this temple again and had a blissful Darshan (with all COVID restrictions, it is not the same anymore)
