Beautiful palace and it has wonderful artefacts. There is a garden and lake beside the palace,The tickets are relatively cheap and a camera ticket is required for additional 20/- There is sufficient parking in front of the palace. The timings are from 9.30am to 4.30pm. There is also lunch break from 1-2pm. The palace is historic and beautiful. People interested in knowing about our history and culture should visit this place. The palace is quiet and very serene.

I think Kerala state archeologic department and Kerala tourism department killing one of the iconic destinations of Kerala. This place has been closed around corona pandemic and they never reopen. Now there is a board on the gate which mentioning renovation work on progress due that visitors not allowed. Actually there is no working operation on progress for the last one year. Very bad 🥴based on 2/10/2023

Located conveniently near Thrissur Vadakke stand. Must visit If you want to explore the rich cultural heritage of thrissur. Kudos to the archaeological department for preserving this Indo-dutch style monument which was once resided by Shakthan Thampuran. A well curated museum is maintained inside the palace which is worth exploring. The staff was friendly and was eager to explain the historical significance. Felt that the timestamp can also be included along with the artefacts for better understanding. Heard that the museum will be renovated soon and this could be rectified the next time you see this. To the right side of the palace there is a heritage garden within the compound wherein some indigenous plants and trees are preserved. Inside the garden you can see the tombs of the great rulers of Kochin dynasty. -Parking: Yes -tickets to be bought for entry (extra for cameras) -open until 04:30 only

OPENING HOURS : 9:30am to 1pm , 2pm to 4:30pm all days except Monday. ENTRANCE : Entrance tickets. -Adult Rs 20. -Children Rs 5. -Mobile camera Rs 10. Car parking available. Photography is prohibited inside the museum. THE "GOOD"s : -Beautiful place, well maintained. The palace is a typical Kerala style building preserved well . -Includes various exhibits like stone sculptures and Ravi Verma paintings, coins from Chera age and more. -The items are labelled and additional information is also provided. -The Heritage garden beside the museum is a good photographic location overlooking the North Pond. THE "BAD"s : -Not many people to guide or explain the artifacts. -Car parking is taken up by local taxi companies thus making it difficult to find a spot. My view : Do visit if in Thrissur, a very green place and a clean atmosphere amidst the city bustle.

Sakthan Thampuran Palace, nestled in the heart of Thrissur, Kerala, is a remarkable historical edifice and a testament to the architectural grandeur of the past. Named after Raja Rama Varma, popularly known as Sakthan Thampuran, who was a significant ruler of the Cochin dynasty in the late 18th century, this palace plays a pivotal role in Kerala’s history. His reign marked the development of Thrissur into a commercial and cultural hub, with the palace at its epicenter. Architecturally, the palace is a splendid amalgamation of traditional Kerala and Dutch styles, reflecting the eclectic influences that have shaped the region's history. Its construction showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of the era, with beautifully detailed woodwork, and the historically significant collections housed within its walls offer insights into the lifestyle, customs, and governance of the time. Today, transformed into a museum, the Sakthan Thampuran Palace serves as a custodian of cultural heritage, displaying artifacts that range from ancient stone inscriptions to coins and weaponry, each narrating its own story of the past. The palace grounds are equally inviting, with a well-maintained garden that adds to the serene atmosphere, making it a serene retreat in the bustling city. Visiting the Sakthan Thampuran Palace is not just a journey through its majestic halls but a voyage back in time, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Kerala's history and the legacy of one of its most influential rulers. This historical landmark is a must-visit for anyone keen on exploring the cultural depths and architectural splendors of Kerala.

Five months ago, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Shakthan Thampuran Palace in Thrissur, and it was a journey back in time that I'll always treasure. While I'm not sure if it's open for visitors right now due to ongoing renovation works, I can certainly share the magic I experienced. 1. Delving into History The palace, which was the home of Shakthan Thampuran, a significant ruler, was built in the late 18th century. It's a unique blend of Dutch and traditional Kerala architectural styles. The steep roofs, slender wooden pillars, and the intricate carvings on the wooden walls are a beautiful reflection of the past. 2.Practical Information When I visited, the entrance fee was quite reasonable, and the palace was open from 10 AM to 5 PM. It's located right in the heart of Thrissur, making it easily accessible to travelers. 3.Hidden Treasures: Inside the palace, I was greeted by an array of artifacts that transported me to a time of luxury and grandeur. The royal thrones, antique furniture, and ornate lamps offered a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Shakthan Thampuran. The collection of ancient weaponry was particularly fascinating, giving me a sense of the history and battles of the era. The highlight of the visit was undoubtedly the splendidly preserved chariot. This colossal wooden chariot, adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant paintings, was awe-inspiring. It played a central role in the renowned Thrissur Pooram festival, and its preservation is a testament to the craftsmanship and cultural heritage of the region. As for whether it's open now, I'd recommend checking with local authorities or websites for the most up-to-date information, given the ongoing renovation works. If it is accessible, I wholeheartedly encourage you to explore this incredible piece of history. The Shakthan Thampuran Palace is a time capsule that allows you to immerse yourself in the grandeur of Thrissur's past and the architectural marvels that have stood the test of time. Don't miss the opportunity to experience this captivating heritage, which will leave you with a deep appreciation for Kerala's history and culture.

Positive place to spend anytime . Ticket was just Rs.25 for adults and if you are using a camera you have to take a ticket for that because there will be checking frequently. The architecture, greenery and the antique collection is quite beautiful. There is herbal garden, butterfly garden, sacred grove, vadakkechira view and Shakthan Thampuran’s tomb inside the heritage garden . The fountain inside the garden , the kudakallu etc were a good experience. The place was quite calm and the staff were good .

Sakthan Thampuran palace is located very near to the heart of Thrissur town ( just opposite to Vadakke Stand). Entry ticket is Rs. 20 per person. You have to pay additionally for Mobile Camera and Digital Camera. There is a lot of items to see that are of historical importance. Even the palace itself is big enough to roam around and see. Also the place is well maintained and you can roam around and have a good time. Good place for family visits. Keep in mind that the palace does not give entry tickets after 4:30 pm. Recommended

A hidden gem. Not to be missed if you are in Thrissur This place is worth a visit if you are in Thrissur. Decently preserved palace and some interesting artifacts. I would not consider it great in terms of the contents in the museum, but still very good. The main palace house artifacts, mainly from the royal family. There is a separate building that house stone age tools etc. Apart from the museum, there is also a heritage garden that is an oasis of greenery in the city. One boundary of the garden is ‘chira’, the pond. As of writing this (May 2019), the entry fee is Rs 20/- for adults and Rs 5/- for children. For using mobile camera, you must pay Rs 10/-. Photography is not permitted inside the museum though. However, there is plenty to photograph outside the museum. I guess tickets are not issued after 4.30 PM. A special mention of the staff there. When I visited, they were very helpful and courteous. One person suggested that my parents take a different staircase since that would be less taxing for them. There was a lady who explained the stone artifacts very enthusiastically. There is decent parking available outside. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Thrissur.

Saktan Thampuran Palace, which was originally known as Vadakkechira Kovilakom, is located in the Thrissur town easily accessible via most modes of transport. It is a protected monument. The palace belonged to the rulers of erstwhile state of Kochi and is a must visit place in Thrissur for history lovers and students to understand the ancestral history of Kerala. It is recommended to spend time and understand the writings etc. which will give an idea regarding the historical importance of the place. There is parking available near the fort entrance and is free. There is a small fee for entering the palace and also fee for using mobile camera as well. Time of entry is shown in the photos attached which may help to adjust schedule of visit The Palace consists of a two-storeyed western style building and another half having traditional style architecture. The entrance hall has a high wooden ceiling placed on high pillars which shows the architectural excellence of that time. Inside there is a royal chariot placed on the entrance hall. There is a traditional nalukettu with a central nadumuttam. The staircase construction and the floors on the first floor will surprise us with the quality and expertise of construction at that times. There is a fortification around the palace. The palace houses an Archaeological museum and there are very rare artifact's and royal displays arranged very well without disturbing the architectural beauty of the palace. The premises of the palace needs little more maintenance as there is no proper cutting of grass etc.

Visiting the Palace-turned-museum was a real treat. The tickets to enter are 30 Rs per person. The exhibits inside were a treat for any museum or history buff. The interiors and the vibe really created an ambience that could transport you back into time. Govt. had taken good initiative to preserve the palace as such by maintaining the architectural structures. The museum is very much attractive. Shakthan Thampuran Palace also called the Vadakkekara Palace is located in Thrissur (Kerala, India). The palace was rebuilt in 1795 in Kerala-Dutch style by the erstwhile ruler of the Cochin Kingdom "Rama Varma Kunhjipilla Thampuran" or popularly known as 'Shakthan Thampuran'. The palace was converted into a museum in 2005. There's an entry fee of about 30rs for adults, and separate fee for camera which is about 50rs. However taking photographs inside the palace is strictly prohibited. The palace museum displays a wonderful collection ranging from coins, bronze gallery, epigraphy gallery, sculpture gallery, household utensils of the Royal household including the erstwhile King's Royal bed. One can almost hear those eaves whispering! There's also an exhibition of the Megalithic period articles just outside the palace. The palace also includes a heritage garden in it's premises which is full of indigenous plants and also houses a serpent grove which in those days was worshipped by the Royal family. It also houses the tombs of King Rama Varma, Shakthan Thampuran himself and a Zamorin (Samuri) of Calicut.

The museum displays Bronze Gallery where one can find bronze statues belonging to the period between the 12th and the 18th centuries, Sculpture gallery displaying granite statues from the 9th century to the 17th century, Numismatics Gallery, which systematically displays ancient coins, which were in circulation in the former province of Kochi and neighbouring kingdoms and the history gallery depicting some of the milestones of the Kochi dynasty and the Epigraphy Gallery showcasing the genesis and evolution of ancient writings. Other galleries of interest at the palace include, a Gallery for Household Utensils made of bronze and copper, used by the rulers of Kochi; and a Megalithic Gallery exhibiting remains of the great stone age. The numismatic section have coins used in Kerala from the 5th century B.C. Roman gold coins (from the Eeyyal hoard) and Travancore native coins (in silver), Veerarayans (gold coins) otta puthan and iratta puthan issued by the kings of Cochin are displayed. These indicate an urban development and commerce. The coin board that measured coins in hundreds to thousands is unique. The coins issued by Tipu Sultan during his brief spell in Kerala, Indo-Dutch coins, Malabar coins (issued by the French), and coins of British India point to different periods of the history of Kerala.

It's maintained by Archeological Survey of India. Prehistoric museum is behind the palace which has many artifacts related to Megalithic period.. On the right side of the palace there is garden with variety of trees with lakes near to it.. Wonderful place to spend time.. Better to wear shoes here as this is large property..

The fort and the antiques inside are maintained well. The displays are with proper labels and also descriptions are available for many. The highlight is still the green around the fort, especially the garden. It has view towards the pond, Vadakke Chira. The place will itself display uniquely to its visitor, each time. (A bit extra helps)

Shakthan Thampuran Palace is easily accessible and is located in the heart of Thrissur. It is located at a distance of 2 km from the city's railway station and 2 km from the Vadakkunathan Temple. You can easily find any local transportation or hire a private taxi to reach the place. Finding the palace can take a wee bit of time as many of the locals don't seem to know about the Shakthan Thampuran Palace. It is located in front of a bus stand, off the Swaraj Road. Parking facility is available near the palace entrance. Take permission beforehand to have a private picnic in the stunning gardens of the palace. Make sure to carry food and beverages for your tour as there are no eateries inside the palace complex. Do not litter. The place comes in a plastic-free zone, so any plastic items are not to be carried inside the complex. You can hire a guide from the official tourism department if you are enthusiastic about knowing the history and intricacies of the monumental palace.

    (Translated by Google) Shaktan Thampuran Palace is located in Thrissur district of Kerala. It was rebuilt by Sri Rama Varma Thampuran, the King of Kochi. The palace has a garden and a creek attached to it. It is still preserved as a cool spot in the city center. Definitely an ideal place to enjoy an evening at a very low cost (Original)

Great place for history seekers. Old architecture. Many ancient sculptures and photos of kochi kings shown their. Nice ambience. Near to vadake stand. The Oushodhyan near the palace is a nice place to sit and relax. It's a hideout from the city traffic and crowds in Thrissur. Although the palace itself may not amaze you with its architecture, as it is a small palace, the overall ambiance is great.

Located in Thrissur, the shakthan thampuran palace is also known as the Vadakkekara Palace and it features a mix of the architectural styles of the Dutch and of Kerala. Reconstructed in 1795, the palace is maintained by the Archaeological Department of the state and it was also made into a museum in the year 2005. Featuring extremely well-built interiors, the palace would offer comfort to occupants and guests from the hot weather of Thrissur. These are some of the palaces in Kerala that offer travelers a taste of the diversity of the culture of Kerala, while also providing a hint of the European flavor of architecture that was prevalent during the times.
