A legendary port, the heart of the historic Spice Route, vanished off the grid over 3000 years ago. Historians and archaeologists hunted far and wide in search of it but to no avail. Then, one day, it rained in Pattanam, a small town in Kerala. The rains unearthed and revealed to mankind remnants of a legacy. The legacy of the lost port, Muziris.... The ancient world's greatest trading centre in the East, this legendary seaport traded in everything from spices to precious stones with the Greeks, Romans and the rest of the world. Once the doorway to India for varied cultures and races including Buddhists, Arabs, Chinese, Jews, Romans, Portuguese, Dutch and even the British, Muziris has stood witness to civilisations being born, wars being waged and history being written. Come... let us together clamber down the ladders of time to a past whose riddles await us. A past cloaked in the grandeur and glory of our ancestors...

Wonderful location of muziris heritage project. Though the project not yet completed, it's worth visiting this historical place if you have little interest to know our past. There are lot of stories you will come to know while visiting here particularly about the invasions of Dutch, Anglican and Tippu. If you have little knowledge about our history, this place gives you wonderful experiences.

Ticket rate is very low. Maintained good but not in a scientific and planned way. The directions cannot be easily understood. Quite and silent place to enjoy natural beauty of river and the boats and bridge. Very valuable to history and archaeology students and those who are interested in our rich heritage. The reminants of fort can seen here and we can go back to history, how they managed here. You can seek the help of a local guide there to understand the importance of the fort and the site. Rich natural flora and fauna can seen here.

Kodungallur Fort (Portuguese: Fortaleza da São Tomé) is a fort built by the Portuguese in 1523. It is located at Kottapuram in Kodungallur, Thrissur. Also known as Kottapuram Fort, Crankannur Fort, St. Thomas Fort and Tipu's Fort. It is one of the three pillars of Portuguese rule in Kochi This fort was the strongest and most impregnable among the Portuguese forts. Kodungallur fort was under the command of Urbano Fialho Ferreira. The Dutch came to Kodungallur from Kollam, receiving orders to capture the fort from their headquarters in Batavia. But the king of Kochi was encamped in the fort with 400 Nair soldiers led by Paliathacha. The Dutch had help from the Samodhi. The Dutch blocked the land and sea routes and began building a tunnel near the fort. But they could not hold their own against the cannon of the Portuguese. Although the Dutch offered a truce, Fialho intensified the attack. But Paliyathachan betrayed the Portuguese. Paliathachan, who sneaked out of the fort, met the Dutch and told them an easy way to enter the fort. On January 15, 1662, the Dutch resumed their attack. They were able to make a crack in the fort with cannon and enter through it. After capturing the main parts of the fort, the Portuguese boarded canoes and escaped to Ambazhakkatte Seminary. Fialho, 200 Portuguese soldiers and about 100 Nair soldiers were killed.

The place around the remains of this Dutch fort has been beautifully landscaped by the archeology department. The blue waters, green lawns, fishing nets and some huge trees gives a visual treat for some great background for your photos!

Cranganoor Fort or Kottappuram Muziris Fort - this site museum will unveil the story of Portuguese and Dutch invasions, the history and architecture of the fort as well as its excavation and conservation. The fort is a part of Muziris Heritage Project. You get to see the ruins and excavation sites of the fort. Periyar river is flowing nearby. The area is decorated with many beautiful trees. History: It was built by the Portuguese in CE 1503. It was captured and destroyed by the Dutch in 1663. The Fort had a strategic position, on the mouth of the river Periyar before it joins the Arabian Sea, which gave it the advantage of controlling the ships and boats that passed to and from the interior of Malabar. Visiting time 10 am to 6 pm. MONDAY Holiday. Entry Fee - Rs. 10/person

One of the best place to spent the evening. The place is neat, clean and full of greenery. One should definitely visit here in the evening to enjoy the place at its fullest. There is also remains of the fort as well a burial body of a Dutch person in showcase. The parking facility os not that good but there is free toilet facility available in here.

Known as Crankanur Fort “Kottapuram Fort”. Built by the Portuguese in 1523 AD. The Dutch captured the fort in 1663. Later Travancore fort was bought for a price with the permission of the British East India Company. In 1789, Tipu Sultan attacked and destroyed the fort. In 1909, the fort was declared a protected monument by the Travancore Archaeological Department. The fort was abandoned for a long time until the State Archeology Department launched an expedition in 2009. Excavations have uncovered ramparts, foundations of several buildings, human skeletons, and archaeological remains representing the Portuguese-Dutch period and earlier periods. Entry to the general public is permitted on all days except Monday. The people, and the people alone, are the motive force in the making of world history❤️

Visited Kottappuram Fort today, a historical gem with roots dating back to the Portuguese in 1523. This fort's strategic location on the mouth of the Periyar River offers a glimpse into its role in past conflicts between the Zamorin and the rulers of Cochin. Now preserved as a public property, it's a testament to the region's rich history and the Dutch influence that followed.

Narrow roads take you to this Fort built by the Portuguese in 1523 - referred to popularly as Cranganore Fort and is now known as Kodungallur Fort. It is in a state of disrepair as a result of age or neglect, though a construction of roof covers it for now. You may find it hard to park your vehicle around this place. This fort ruins lie on a strategic point at the mouth of the river Periyar before it joins the Arabian Sea. Huge trees provide a good green canopy to the park around and that is helpful to the young lovers to relax here. In reality there is nothing much to see here.

Nice. This is Kottappuram fort remains. It is near Kodungalloor. One can visit here in the working hours 9am or 10 i won’t remember it —to 5pm. Here it is written that it is one of the remains of a Portuguese fort which was built in 1504. But now we can see only the remains of the fort now. A skeleton is preserved here and the authorities told that it is one of a Portuguese national under 25 years of age. We can walk through the meadows preserved quite nicely here. Here we have to pay entry fees . Here parking area nearby is very small

It is calm and beautiful place and ticket price is also very low. Not too big but if you want to sit alone or with someone to talk or to think about something this place is great.

  • 4/5 Sreepathy P. 1 year ago on Google
If you are on the Muziris Trail, then this is one of the stops. The heritage area is now home to the old remnants of the Kottapuram Fort that was destroyed. The ticket prices are minimal. The remaining sections and standing structure's of the fort are covered, so you'll get an idea of how big the fort was. There's not a lot to do here but you can come in the evenings for a nice walk and watch the river view. Lots of space to walk around or simply sit. There are clean bathrooms inside and at the reception there's a shop that sells some snacks and cold packaged beverages.

The remains of a once great fort built by Portuguese in 1500 s AD. Significant is it's strategic location in the riverbank. Tipu Sultan destroyed this fortification during his Malabar raid and what we can see today is onky the skeleton of a once proud fort, visivle only after the years long excavations by Archeological Survey of India. The access to the site is through a narrow road through river side and the Parking facilities are almost nil. Kottappuran ‘Angadi’ or market near to the site is also worth watching, which has till now preserved it's old age looks

The site is very calm and quite place from the kodungalore city. If anyine want to take quick escape from scorching heat and take a nap, This is right place. Very small place better to visit on evening time. Ticket fee is 10rs/head.

  • 5/5 Tomy k W. 6 months ago on Google
Please note there is no big fort. 😊. There are only some remaining that you have to imagine from the excavations. Nearby park is so nice that you can sit and enjoy views of harbor and river. Parking will be littlebit difficult that only 4 to 5 cars can be parked at a time.

Kottapuram Fort, situated in Kodungallur, Kerala, India, is a historically significant structure that has witnessed various empires and cultural influences over the centuries. This fort holds a crucial position in Kerala's history due to its strategic location along the Periyar River, connecting the Arabian Sea to the interior regions. Believed to have been constructed by the Portuguese in the 16th century, the fort was later occupied by the Dutch, and eventually, it came under British control. Kottapuram Fort served as a trading post, primarily facilitating the spice trade, which was of immense economic importance during that era. The fort's architectural features reveal the influence of European design, with bastions, cannons, and battlements that are reminiscent of colonial military structures. Although time has taken its toll on the fort, its historical significance remains intact, attracting tourists interested in Kerala's rich past. The town of Kodungallur, where the fort is located, is also known for its cultural diversity and religious significance. It was a prominent center for trade, attracting various merchants and explorers from different parts of the world. The nearby ancient Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple, a revered Hindu temple, adds to the town's cultural heritage. Kottapuram Fort is not only a physical structure but also a symbolic representation of the dynamic history of Kerala, reflecting the interplay of various cultures and civilizations that have left their mark on this coastal region. Visiting the fort is a fascinating journey through time, allowing you to connect with the past and appreciate the historical significance of this remarkable site.
