This is the only Thevaram Paadal Petra Shiva temple in Kerala. This temple is built in the 8th century during the Chera period. This temple is a protected monument by the Archaeological department of India. If you are going here, you should know how to do prayer in this temple. There are a lot of deities present in this temple.

One of the oldest Hindu temples in the world. A great place to go with your family for your spiritual journey and inner peace. Readily visible from the road and is noticeable. Restroom facilities are good and reasonable. There are various Pooja's or abhishekam's that one can have performed and they can be booked in advance. There is no wheelchair accessible entrance to the temple. There is limited parking space available under the trees; rest of the space is under the sun and is not covered. Annadanam is from 11 AM to 12 AM and donations can be done by you to be conducted on a special day based on your requirements.

Only Padal Petra Sthalam in Kerala The most significant point in history is that this is the only padal petra sthallam (sung by the Nayanmars) in Kerala. The temple has got a great history associated with it. The most important one being that it is related to the Chidambaram Nataraja temple and how the idol of Nataraja was protected here. The temple is just a few meters away from the main road and you directly land up in the parking space. Fairly large temple and it is not at all crowded. In fact I was there on Deepavali and hardly a few people around. I have seen many temples in Kerela and when compared to some of them, I think this temple requires much more maintenance. There are several small shrines inside the temple and the main lingam of Shiva in the sanctum is small. There is nobody to explain anything at all in the temple and there are no information boards either. Such a place of importance should be given much more attention. Shirts are not allowed for males when one enters the temple. However they do allow full pant. I suggest people wear decent and traditional clothes when visiting the place as you might not be allowed inside otherwise.

Thiruvanchikulam Shiva Temple is a temple located two kilometers south of Kodungallur in Thrissur district. The main deity here is Lord Shiva in Sadasiva form facing east. Also 33 deities are located here. This temple has the largest number of sub-deities in Kerala. Twelve of them are various forms of Shiva himself. Besides, there are other sub-deities like Parvati Devi, Ganga Devi, Durga Devi, Bhadrakali, Ganapati (two deities), Ayyappan, Subrahmanya, Hanuman, Saptamatris, Veerabhadra, Chandikeshwar, Naga Deities, Unnithevar (Shiva), Bhringirathi, Cheraman Perumal, Sundaramurthy Nayanar. It is located a little east of the Trikulasekarapuram Sri Krishna Temple. This is the only Kerala temple mentioned in the Shaivite devotional literature of South India. This is also the only temple in Kerala that has a Shaiva Siddha deity. Daily Palliara Pooja (Dampatipooja, Umamaheswarapooja) is important in the temple. This pooja is performed after nightfall. This is one of the two temples in Kerala where Palliara Puja is performed daily. Palliara Puja is considered auspicious for Mangalyalabdhi and Long Mangalyam.

If you want to go on a pilgrimage then definitely visit Thiruvanchikulam Mahadeva Temple. This Mahadeva temple is an ancient temple built in a very organized and special way. When we come down after visiting here, we feel a sense of having reached the pinnacle of peace of mind. A must see temple for devotees. Located in Kodungalloor - Eranakulam route and close to Kodungalloor Sree Kurumba Temple.
