Paathal as name suggest temple is slightly below the land level... It takes few meters walk in sand to reach this temple, this is 2nd of the 5 temples you get to see on the long walk in sand.. these temples have great historic value and gives out such positive vibes.. the whole point that you walk in sand for few meters makes the temple amplify it's value .. you feel great after darshana that all the walk you took was worth... ** You won't get food on the way ** Water stall one or two may be available ** It takes at least a km to walk in sand ** It's not easy to walk in sand ** there is a shed on top which at least allows you to walk in shade. ** No washrooms on the way

One of the oldest temples constructed by the Ganga kings in Talakadu, Pathaleshwara Temple has some uniqueness to it and one of the five lingams in the town. The Shiva lingam installed in the temple changes its hue with a different time of day. The Lingam is red in the morning, black in the afternoon and white at night, adding a mysterious touch to this ancient temple.

Very old Hindu Temple of Shiva. Pathaleshwara Temple is another popular pilgrimage site in Talakad. It is considered to be one amongst the earliest temples constructed by Ganga kings in this town. The prime attraction of Pathaleshwara Temple is its Shivalingam, which changes colour at different points of the day.

This temple was buit in 1117AD during the chola dynasty. It is situated in Talakadu, Karnataka. A very nice place for a one day trip. It is around 150 km from bangalore. I booked a cab from Utaxi who took 3000/- from Bangalore for a Tata Indica AC car. The trip included Talakadu temple, kaveri river bank, Shivanasamudram falls and temple. Overall it was a nice experience. You can take a guide in the talakadu temple who will take 200/- and explain you all the details. There are 5 temples in the area. Most of the people don't realise it and end up seeing just one. Best time to visit -- During July-August if you want to enjoy the beauty of shivanasamudram waterfall. Total cost -- Around 3500 if you book a cab, and 2000 if you drive your own vehicle. Lunch -- near kaveri river (cost - 50-60 per person)

After walking from Sri Vaidyanatheshwara temple, we arrive at this ancient and self manifested Shivalinga temple. This is part of Pancha (5) Lingas. Main temple is quite below adjacent ground level and hence a boundary has been built to prevent sand collection around the temple during rainy season. But temple priest expressed that this boundary wall is unable to prevent any sand coming inside and hence this accumulated sand needs to be removed manually almost on a regular basis.

The best part of the approach is the roofed sand walkway from the beach, and you plod slowly along the green line shown in the map. When I first saw this almost fifty years ago, the excavation was incomplete. Thirty years ago we were able to enter the tempe. Now the temple is fortified well. The temple is well maintained, but we stayed only a few minutes.

Excellent construction and well maintained y archeological dept. It's a very good to explain our Indian culture and our sanaathana dharma. Wonderful place to visit. But to take a long walk. For elders and children, it's a bit difficult. No wheelchair. Parking is good. No proper toilets. Could be maintained the surroundings better. 3 food outlets are available for urgent need. Cool drinks and hot drinks are available in pretty shops.

You get to walk in sand for this temple which is down from the road and submerged with sand. An ancient temple with good belief, do worship. Get a good feeling when you see it. Before entering you have 5 lingas as panchaligeshwara. The bad thing about this is everytime time you visit the near by temples the people try to sell their items forcibly as if you be cursed if you do not buy.

The first temple you see on your trip to talakadu. I'll try adding all of them its 5 to 6 in total if I'm right. It's beautiful and good place to visit. The place is decent and historical and the government is doing well in looking after it. You'll find parking, hotels, shops to buy trinkets.

Very nice place. It has a historical background of centuries. But bit tiring to walk over all the temples in sand. Walk path has a shelter and provides a good protection from sun and heat. It once had 30 temples and most of them are not covered under sand.

Sri Pathaleshwara Temple, is located at Talakadu, Karnataka at a distance of 130 kms from Bangalore & 50 Kms from Mysore. Talakadu (or Talakad) is a historic site, near Mysore, on the banks of the River Kaveri. It was once a flourishing town, which saw the rise and fall of several kingdoms. But today, much of Talakadu is buried under the sand. It is a scenic pilgrimage centre where one can visit ancient temples. More than 30 temples are buried in sand. Talakadu Panchalinga Darshana comes around once every twelve years. The temples worshipped on the day are, Sri Vaideshwara, Sri Maruleshwara, Sri Mallikarjuna , Sri Arakeshwara and Sri Pathaleshwara. As per the legend two brothers – Tala and Kadu. found a tree being worshipped by elephants, which they then cut down. And they discovered the tree was bleeding. Then, a voice ordered them to heal it using its leaves. After the tree was restored, the blood turned into milk, which the brothers drank and attained moksha. Later, the town was named Talakadu after those two brothers. Apart from the legend about Talakadu Temples history, another popular one is about the curse which buried Talakadu under the sand. As per the local folklore, Wodeyar rulers (of Mysore) took over the region after the death of the king. Also, he was after the jewels belonging to the queen (Queen Alamelamma). But she fled. And when she found she couldn't escape, she drowned herself in River Kaveri. But before jumping into the river, she uttered a three-fold curse – “Talakadu Maralagi, Malangi Maduvagi, Mysooru Arasarige Makkalagadirali.” It translates to – “Let Talakadu become sand, let Malangi become a whirlpool, let the Mysore Rajas fail to beget heirs.” And Talakadu, the once prosperous town, is now buried in mounds of sand, several metres deep. As per the legends, 30 temples are buried in the mounds of sand. And it is believed that most temples were built by the kings of Vijayanagar kingdom. The Hoysalas, Cholas and others too contributed and added many features to the existing temples. However, only a few temples have been excavated. Revered among those are the five Shiva temples – Pataleshwara, Maraleshwara, Arkeshwara, Mallikarjuna and Vaidhyanatheshwara. The Keerthinarayana Temple is also a popular temple of Talakadu. Pathaleshwara Temple is a cave temple carved in the Rashtrkutas period. It is cut stone temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. A unique shiviling is installed in the cave temple. It is considered to be one amongst the earliest temples constructed by Ganga kings in this town. The prime attraction of Pathaleshwara Temple is its Shivalingam, which changes colour at different points of the day. The Shivalingam is red in colour during the morning but changes to black in the afternoon and white at night. The way to temple goes downside for witnessing the main Shiva cave temple. Must have darshan.
