Relocated in 1960s from submergence in Srisailam backwaters, which was originally built in 7th Century and known for it’s amazing architecture. Location of the temple on the banks of River Krishna offers spectacular views and makes the visit memorable

Built in the 7th century by the Chalukya dynasty, this temple was meticulously relocated to avoid flooding by the Srisailam reservoir. One can see the marking of numbers and symbols on the slabs of the temple, with the help of which it was reconstructed, under the supervision of the state branch of the Archaeological Society of India and the Endowments Department. Maha Shivaratri and Karthika Pournami are celebrated with much pomp and fervour here and attract a lot of pilgrims from all over the district and far off places. The Pushkaralu Snanam (holy dips/bath in the river) which takes place during the Krishna Pushkaram once in 12 years witnesses devotees thronging the area due to the belief that all sins are washed away when you take a dip during that period.

This is a collection of relocated historic Shiva-tradition Hindu temples, one of many groups of ruins and temples that were relocated from the Krishna river valley in the 1960s. This relocation became necessary due to the anticipated rising water levels of Srisailam dam project championed by JL Nehru – the first prime minister of India. The relocated temples retain the phamsana-style shikara, some are original, while others are restored – these can be identified by the color of the stone (original) or painted over (restored). The pillars, ceilings and artwork are original, while some of the original ruins have been reused. Two of the ceiling Dikpalas in this complex of temples are beautiful. They are from the 8th to 9th-centuries. The temples are active, near the Somasila bathing ghats and Krishna river reservoir bank. To the immediate north of the Somesvara temple in Somasila, across the road from the compound wall, is the Somasila museum with both indoor and outdoor exhibit of some nice statues as well as many broken and mutilated artwork that was also relocated to Somasila for Srisailam dam project. Both are worth a visit.

Somasila is a hidden gem. It has temple, river, scenery, and not too crowded. Best for weekend getaway. The temple is old and is maintained well. 12 Jyothirlingas. The Boating in the river Krishna is simply awesome. The scenic beauty will mesmerize you. This place can be well developed with more cottages for overnight stay and can be easily become one of the important places to visit if you are around Hyderabad. Takes about 3 1/2 hours by car to reach from Hyderabad.

This is known to be a jyotirling in Somasila. The temple is very old and said to be relocated from the bank of the river at 1960 to avoid submerging in Krishna backwaters. One can notice numbering on the stones of the temple. But whatever be the construction history, this is one example of rich temple architecture of 1000 years old india. There are 8 Shiva lingams inside the temple. The main one is the the straight from the entry to the entrance of the temple. The environment of the temple is heavenly. There is ample parking space.

At a distance of 9 km from Kollapur, 105 km from Mahabubnagar and 186 km from Hyderabad, Sri Lalitha Someswara Swamy temple is a Hindu temple located at Somasila village in Mahabubnagar district of Telangana. Sri Lalitha Someswara Swamy Temple is a highly revered shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed to have been built during the 7th century. Somasila is a well-known tourist attraction of Mahabubnagar that consists of 15 temples. These temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva and are enshrined with several Shivalingas. The temple was shifted from old Somasila village to higher altitude to protect it from being submerged in Krishna water during the construction of Srisailam Dam. The surroundings of Somasila are also known for its scenic beatury. Mahashivaratri and Karthika Pournami are the main festivals celebrated here. The Pushkar Snanam during the Krishna Pushkaram which occurs once in 12 years is auspicious. Kollapur, at a distance of 9 kms from Somasila is also famous for several temples and can be visited together. Boating facilities is also available at Somasila in the backwaters of Srisailam Dam.

The temple architecture is good, but not maintained well. There was only one priest who was only interested in offerings. There is a large gang of beggars outside the temple. It seems this village's economic and financial condition is very poor.

The maintenance of the temple is not good , but the only reason to there is , it's one of the historical temple and you will not find even a single hotel ,should make your own But according to my knowledge ,I think it will be developed as soon as possible because the atmosphere there was like that... Hope it's useful, Thank you.

One of the oldest Shive temples which is dated back to the 7th century. Multiple jyotrilingas are there in the temple complex reminiscent of the actual shivlings alongside goddess Lalithamba. This temple is relocated to the current location during the construction of Srisailam dam.

Somasila is a beautiful place for a 1-day/2-day trip (For a 2-day stay, one can stay at the Somasila Harita Resort (now run by private org) Sri Lalitha Someswara Swamy Temple is a highly revered shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Its relocation is a marvel in itself. The surroundings are amazing with lot of views. Far away from crowd. We visited on a Sunday and we could hardly see 2-3 familes. Food is a challenge, but if you go towards the View Point, you will find lot of local food hotels which serves good food. The road from Jadcherla is a smooth drive and we enjoyed our trip. There is boat (launch) ride available (15 mins - adult 50/- childred 30/-) You can pay double if the group agrees and stay in water for 30 mins. That is another amazing experience on Krishna Waters. Now is the time to go before its highly promoted by tourism (krishna project) and you will see more people visiting.

As an atheist, my visit to the SOMASILA Famous Someshwara Temple was not driven by religious sentiments, but rather a curiosity to explore the structure, nature, and the village it resides in. This village holds a special place in my heart, being the birthplace of my grandmother and mother. Having spent a significant part of my childhood here, my perspective is shaped by a familiarity that goes beyond religious beliefs. Let's start with the natural beauty that surrounds this village. It's reminiscent of Goa, with its earthy charm. However, instead of sandy beaches, SOMASILA boasts a landscape dominated by mud, stones, and rustic simplicity. The absence of pollution is a noteworthy aspect, allowing one to breathe in the fresh air and escape the hustle and bustle of city life. The accommodation options add to the charm of the village. There are resorts for those seeking a more extended stay, providing a comfortable retreat amidst the tranquil surroundings. For budget-conscious travelers, hourly rooms offer a convenient and affordable option to rest and rejuvenate. Turning our attention to the temple itself, the infrastructure is a testament to ancient craftsmanship. Built with sturdy stones and granites, the temple stands tall, supported by pillars that have weathered the test of time. Inside the temple compound, there is ample space to explore, extending beyond the sanctum sanctorum. It's not just about the main shrine; there's a sense of history and spirituality that permeates the areas surrounding, behind, and beside the temple. In essence, not because of any religious fervor, but due to the intrinsic beauty of the village, the simplicity of its nature, and the historical significance embedded in the temple's structure. you can go through my video once how peaceful it is

12 sanctums representing the 12 Jyotirlinga Kshetras. The intention was to replicate the 12 sanctums of the Jyotirlingas. Build over 500 years ago and completely made of stone the temple is a beautiful site and a peaceful one too.The view of river Krishna nearby is a beautiful site and must visit during winters
