We had an historic experience there. If you’re visiting the place, it’s best to have a guide who would be explaining the ins and outs of the house. Especially some of the memorabilia inside the house, our guide explained the belt he got from Sugar Ray Leonard, the letter in the cupboard, the setup of the house, the fire bombing of the house, the graves on the house, the umbilical cords of the children. I’d recommend this for any traveller, especially for those who didn’t get to experience Mandela. You get to be up close and personal and feel like you knew Mandela. It’s relatively affordable, we went during the Youth Day (16 June) and the fee was R40.

Great place to learn the history of Nelson Mandela in a relaxed way. A small cozy home filled with a lot of efucative memories, you can even visualise everything with the pictures that were taken way back. Very smart and well maintained. Friendly guides too. The street has nice restraurants and bars as well. Traditional dancers and so much entertainment. You will need cash with you to tip everyone. I loved the place.

The young female guide was very informative and dealt with most of the questions posed to her from a group of 7 of us. The history seems to focus a lot on Winnie (Mandela's 2nd wife). The outside audio about the placentas from the birthing of the children buried in the garden was different to think about man's connectedness with nature, how we are born from and return to the earth, so our lives upon the earth must be caring for it. A great African tradition which should be used everywhere. There are TV screens showing some of Mandela's speeches and interviews with his family members. The bullet holes in the walls a reminder of the oppression they went through because of believing in a different way forward than that of the government.

Interesting to see but definitely wouldn't say it is a must see. The entrance costs 60rand and the house itself is very small with much of the surrounding area full of touristic gifts and restaurants. If planning to visit, I would recommend that it isn't out of your way because the house itself was underwhelming for me.

The Nelson Mandela National Museum, commonly referred to as Mandela House, is the house on Vilakazi Street, Orlando West, Soweto, South Africa, where Nelson Mandela lived from 1946 to 1962. It is located at number 8115, at the corner of Vilakazi and Ngakane streets, a short distance up the road from Tutu House, the home of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. Mandela donated the house to the Soweto Heritage Trust (of which he was the founder) on 1 September 1997, to be run as a museum. It was declared a National Heritage Site in 1999.

A humbling experience visiting this great human being who guided our Awesome Country during times where Humility, Compassion were so desperately needed. We visited with really good friends from England and they loved the experience. Vilakazi Street has a great vibe and like no other Street in the World as it had 3 Nobel Winners on the same street. Well worth a visit, puts life into perspective of how much we need to be grateful for what we do have.

A walk into the home of one of the greatest men that lived. Hard to imagine that this 300 sq ft home was where Nelson Mandela lived(albeit, briefly). Modest entry fee of 60 rand for adults , a lively well informed guide. Overall , a 30 min walk into history.

I went to Mandela's residence. Nearby, there is a parking lot for cars. Some street vendors approach you to make a sale. With a guide, you can tour the home and discover more about Mandela's life. The number of vendors grows as you make your way back to the parking lot, and they sing a tune like "Welcome to Soweto" and unavoidably request a tip; it's best to offer them a small amount, like 50 rand.

Not a lot to see, per say. The building surrounding the house gives the impression that it's a lot to see. It's like any other shack in Soweto. Furniture and some personal items. There are no pictures allowed inside and no video on premises. But having said that. Once you leave out from the house, the whole street is alive and popping. Zulu dancing men in complete costumes. They put on a very energetic show for you. The street vendors are everywhere and will pressure you to buy. Everything is negotiable and worth the hassle. Keep your money close to you, and don't flash large sums. There are guides there that direct you to parking, give him 50 Rands, and it's worth it. He will keep the non vendors from begging you. Can't think of anything else of importance, but as detailed as I am trying to be, nothing compares to the experience. None African pay more for admission. YOLO

Very interesting experience, although Nelson Mandela didn’t lived in this house for long, the information from documentation to awards is well displayed. It is very positive that the price includes the guide but in the end you need to tip them.

Visiting here is like walking in the footsteps of a great man and through his life. To say the least it is a humbling experience. The house is small but cosy. The renovations have certainly helped to restore the place and gives one a glimpse of the Mandela family life. The coal stove and bedroom are true replicas. The volunteers who guide you through the tour shed a lot of light on the history and events associated with the home and family. It is inspiring to think that he came from such a simple background but went on to do such amazing things. Note there are MANY groups performing traditional dances on the street outside. It’s fun to watch however they do expect a tip for their performance. This can be overwhelming on the wallet.

Our guide was a very knowledgeable college student/docent who shared a great deal about the history on the outside of the house. Once inside, we were left to roam through the small house on our own, which was actually perfect because it was a typical modest home. It is a glimpse into the past, personal life, and living space of the Mandela family. I appreciate that the family made it into a museum, and the state designated it as historic.

This is the place to be on earth. The house is located 25 min from Johannesburg and it’s worth the drive if you go there. The guides are very well informed about the history and everything is pretty self explanatory. A lot of history is associated with this house and I was moved by it. If you want to learn more about Nelson Mandela’s evolution this is a must visit

It was a surprise. Too small space to a great man. But it is the history. Spotless, nice and welll organized. Employees or collaborators were useful and helpful. Souvenirs or merchandise should be more varied. Price is OK. A place to be visited and recommended.

Mandela's house is a small house in Soweto that contains a great amount of history and actual awards and documents. It's a great activity for those like museums or history. Vilakazi street is also a vibey street for African cuisine or vibes. The place feels safe and is easy to get there with GPS.

This house was NOT THE ORIGINAL as they claim the original was burned down twice & rebuilt. You gave to drive THROUGH ALL KINDS OF ppl jumping in front of the car & trying to pass us flyers or get us to buy stuff. There are a few street performers along the way so HAVE MONEY ON HAND TO GIVE TO THEM. The house is SUPER SMALL & definitely was BUILT STRICTLY FOR TOURISTS in a community that could DESPERATELY USE THE HOUSE FOR ACTUAL HOUSING. All the pictures in the house are FOUND ON THE INTERNET so NOTHING NEW THERE. It was interesting to see all THE AMERICAN ACCOLADES from COLLEGE TO COMMUNITIES there are MANY WHO WROTE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MANDELA yet not much for him from S Africa itself. Winnie his wife got quite a few ACCOLADES from S Africa AFTER MANDELA DIED but HE NEVER GOT HIS FLOWERS ALIVE so this "Museum" is not for him it's to STEAL PRIME REAL ESTATE IN A VERY UNDERSERVED AREA.

I took my mom, who stays outside of Johannesburg, to see the Mandela House as she has a great appreciation for history. Upon arriving there, the lines were not too bad and we excitedly entered without much hassles. The coldness and rudeness experienced from the tour guides though leaves a lot to be desired and immediately put me off the experience. The minute they realize that you are a local, the treatment is really horrible. One lady even shouted at us for joining the "wrong" group after no-one bothered to communicate which group we should join. The one gentleman deliberately ignores us when we tried to enquire about which group to join. I hope something is done about this as there are still locals who would like to be a part of the experience and be made to feel just as welcome as tourists from all over the world. Very disappointing treatment!

If you visit South Africa, this is a must. We had a great tour operator and she explained everything, took us through a short history of Mr Mandela and his wife Winnie. She took us in the house and explained what it actually looked like before it was refurbished. It’s just a small shack. He came from humble beginnings. A great learning experience.

THIS, by far, was one of the BEST visits I had while visiting Jo-Burg (Soweto)! To see such rich culture, to step foot in what was once Nelson & Winnie Mandela's home was overwhelmingly emotional and incredible! I learned a lot from the tour guide about their experiences. It was such a magical experience to be here. I highly recommend taking the guided tour to learn more about the Mandela's.

I have visited this house a few times because I live in South Africa and it still gives me chills to walk through and see how the family lived. Every time I have gone, there was no guide on the tour so I have questions but couldn't really get answers to them on site, I had to Google (which isn't a train smash for me). There was a guitarist playing music outside, which made it extremely difficult to hear some of the audio clips in the house so a suggestion for the place would be to maybe increase the volume of the audio. In general, this place was very beautiful and I will definitely be back to visit!

Pictures Copyright ©️ blackjohannes. Pictures as is and was not edited or manipulated. Mandela is just Mandela. An icon and legend in the world. The father of the new South Africa. His former house is turned into a small museum for people to visit. The house is situated in Vilikasi Street in Soweto, the only street in the world where two Nobel Peace Laureates lived. Archbishop Desmond Tutus house is just around the corner from Mandela House. You cannot visit the house of Tutu, but the Mandela House is open to the public who wants to pay an entrance fee. Make a day trip of it and visit Madibas house and combine it with a visit to Hector Peterson museum. Have a coffee , a pizza or a few drinks in Vilikzi streets.

Eintritt.

Good experience, there a guide who tells Mandela history, it's a time travel! shotgun marks in the wall, trees planted by Mandela. Do not visit alone, find who organizes this trip, i had lucky visit shown by a local!

  • 5/5 Marlene M. 2 years ago on Google
You have to stop here and learn about the history of Mandela. Be sure to walk up a couple blocks to the Hector Pietersons memorial. It's hard to swallow, so please prepare yourself for the pictures. It's harsh history, but it happened and I'm glad to have learned about the history.

Is impossible to go in South Africa and not visit the Mandela House. Is respect and knowledge to be there!

  • 5/5 Amanda K. 2 years ago on Google
Definitely worth the visit. The bullet holes in the house are the most jarring. Sitting in the backyard and listening to recordings of Winnie speaking about certain things was the best part of the experience for me.

Interesting to see, would definitely have a guide walk you through it - they have a lot of information to offer. Quite expensive though, worth it if you use the guide I suppose.

We visited here and upon walking up it was a busy and chaotic outside the entrance. Men approached us with song for tips and it was hard to get them to leave which made us feel uncomfortable. When we finally continued towards the entrance, they backed off. After visiting other museums near, I strongly felt, the organization of "Mandela House" did not meet up to its "world-class..." online description. The lady selling tickets was nonchalant when informing us about the tour/ v self-guided. It was not as clean as there was trash blowing around out in the entrance and throughout. People was surrounding the place and hanging around. It seemed as if organizerd cluttered the building with artifacts (bet it would be on better shape in CT, or Jonzi) and I felt sensory over-load trying to take it all in in such a small space. As an artist and traveler who has been to various heritage museums and places of interest, I just feel as if the layout seemed like after thought. I don't know if it demonstrates the truest and fullest respect in his honor.

I went on a short visit to Soweto and stopped by Vilakazi street where we have the Mandela house. Unfortunately, we were unable to go into the house for a tour, and I guess it's due to the public holiday at the time of visit.

I am thankful for the in-house tour guide. He provided us with the historical backdrop before we entered the house of Mandela. There is so much to learn and contemplate.

Everyone knows Mr. Nelson Mandela. Visitors to Mandela's house can explore the various rooms, including the living room, dining room, kitchen, and bedrooms. Mandela's house has become a symbol of hope and resilience, embodying the triumph over adversity.

I'm glad I decided to go on this tour of Mr. Mandela's home with his second wife Winnie. Just to see and hear all the traumatizing experiences they went through with their children was definitely heart breaking. This is a must go if you are ever in Soweto, South Africa.

A truly surreal experience to stand in the place where an icon grew up. Nelson Mandela transcends celebrity status, the feeling when you are in the house is quite indescribable. Soweto is a great experience, I found everyone to be extremely friendly.
