Very, very interesting and eye opening experience for us at the Apartheid Museum. We went there as part of a private tour and only allotted two hours. So, unfortunately we only made it until 1970 before having to depart. We recommend four hours to see everything included. We were a group of two visiting on a weekday so there was no lines, not very busy and no need to buy tickets in advance. We really enjoyed our time here and would recommend visiting when you travel to Johannesburg.

cool museum, was so packed with field trips though made it hard to enjoy in silence. Takes at least 2 hours to really see everything.

It’s a must see if you visit Johannesburg. There is a lot of text. At times, the content/flow of the museum seems to jump around. Occasionally it briefly loses power so secondary lights go on. There are some videos.

Wonderfully evocative and disturbing museum. There is a great deal to see and read and we would have happily stayed for longer than the three hours we allowed ourselves. The restaurant is a bit basic but acceptable and the small gift shop has some interesting items.

This museum is going to stir up something deep inside you. You are given either a ‘White’ or ‘Non-white’ card at the entrance which follow separate paths in the first section giving you a very clear insight into how life for South Africans have shaped up over the years. The museum has plenty of excerpts, short movies, audio clips and a lot of info. You should definitely account for 3+ hours to really do justice to this museum. Tickets are priced at 150 Rands as of 2023 and there’s plenty of parking available.

The museum has been closed since last year dude to COVID, I drove there and found it closed. Update your website as the museum, I wanted to bring an American he even left without actually visiting a SINGLE museum! Because you people don't update your Websites

It’s a most see in Jobourg - make sure you dedicate at least 3-4 hours. At 5 they turn off the lights and make you find your way through the museum in the dark 😂 Definitely unique way to rush people out.

Must go to the Apartheid Museum! A wealth of history, so powerful and well presented. Tour guide is recommended. There are a few details you might miss otherwise. And the museum is very large, so the guide helps you move along a bit quicker without missing anything.

As a grown man. I cried. The practice was so despicable that if you have only a degree of humanity, you will cry. I learned that apartheid was so inhuman that I couldn't understand how the world allowed it to go on for so long. The experience is something that is now fully on my soul. How the South African blacks and colored tolerated it for so long is still a mystery to me. If you come to South Africa, you must go right away so you can enjoy the rest of your trip.

Stunning well laid out museum. History of apartheid laid bare but not in a depressing way. Worth at least 4 hours of your time

So sad to imagine that all of this happened in real life. I was on the verge of losing hope for humanity and the spirit that drives mankind when I visited this site, but for the hope, the courage, and the strength that Nelson Mandela represents. I'm amazed that someone who had passed through so much is the same one who turned around to lead reconciliation, preaching unity in diversity. I still think the whites owe Africans genuine remorse and a rebuilding of mankind, human personality, human dignity and a restoration of the walls and soul of the Africa that was destroyed centuries ago. Africa needs a rebirth!

If you're in the area, this should be a place to take in some historical truths. When walking through, not only can you recount the historical context of Apartheid, but one should be able to see its affects on natives of SA then and even now. Only then are we able to understand how truly devastating the systems of Apartheid IS. It's rather insightful and warrants actionable atonement. This is not meant for just another walk through another museum.

(Translated by Google) Damage exclusively in English Museum as its name suggests mainly oriented on apartheid and Mandela. But also on the history of South Africa and its settlers. It's a shame that this museum, rich in films and documentaries, offers no transcription, which is common in our time. From the entrance to the museum you will have a white or black ticket and a different path to make you feel the segregation. It's just for the first few meters. At the exit small bar and souvenir shop.

Excellent! If you are interested in knowing the history of this rainbow country, no matter what you've read or where else you've been in that regard, you just have to visit the Apartheid museum. Good signage. The creativity even as you enter with your tickets (you'd understand when you're get there) makes you have a deeper understanding of the past. Of course, reliving some of these experiences maybe disturbing but it is definitely a worthwhile venture.

It's a great place to visit. But I have to warn you if you are someone sensetive and also it's sad bacause you are not allowed to take pictures, to the only memories you will have, are ticket, photos you take at the entrance and the memories. But other then that friendly environment. I advice you to also travel as a group it will be more fun

A must in Joburg. Only open Thursday to Sunday and bank holidays, we were lucky to be there on Easter Monday. You have to see this museum to help you understand/recollect/refresh your memory of this insane period in time. I was sickened. I left the museum twice to get air. I left the visit with dark clouds over my head, so I suppose that can give you an idea of just how good this museum actually is. Photos inside the museum are forbidden, but my link with accessibility forced me to take one photo ... "For every person that died, three people were left with a disability..." This just added to my dark clouds.

One of the top 20 best curated Museum in the world 🌎 focusing particularly on the horrific atrocities of the Apartheid Era in South Africa. A mix of video clips, audio clips, print articles & real artifacts to depict the narrative in chronological order for your convenience. Wheelchair friendly spaces. A restaurant for you to take a break & have coffee with a sandwich or slice of cake. The museum shop has loads of of books, apparel & souvenirs to purchase.

The museum overall was an okay experience, I've seen better and have been treated better. The staff in the Cafe on the other hand were another story. Disgusting, rude and malicious! The specific person has been identified in the photos attached. I explained to her that I disliked the sauce they put on my burger and she got IRRATE IMMEDIATELY! She slammed the food carton top down on my hands while I was showing her what I was speaking about and then snatched the carton from me. These photos are the aftermath, she thinks it's funny and smirks about her childish behavior. Just UGLY...

Own of the best and only places you'll have to visit while in Johannesburg. If you like history or would like to learn more about South Africa's past this is definitely a must go. One of THE BEST museums you’ll find. So wrong experience. Very moving. Extremely well done. Even if you o may have ½ an hour, it’s so worth the 150 Rand per person. You could spend hours and hours there but it’s worth even a short and speedy trip. Just deploy your speed-reading skills - you’ll need it.

The best place to go in Johannesburg. You can spend hours learning about the history of South Africa here. There’s a lot of memorabilia of the times of apartheid here and just a lot of learn. We need to teach the younger generations about the past so it doesn’t happen again and how South Africa needs to change in the future. Being a United South Africa with blacks, colors, whites and Indians living side by side.

Very nice little museum inside the faculty. Its got 3 or 4 particular displays (AIDS, polio, alternative medicine, etc) the rest is walls filled with historical facts of medicine. It has a huge collection of old instruments, each labeled with precise information about it. It has nice ambientation as well. Its deffenately worth a visit if youre a medical professional, a bit less for general public. Its free entrance so that makes it nice. Time to spend there is at maximum an hour and a half if not less. We really enjoyed. Next to it there is a medical book store and coffe place.

Jaw-dropping experience. As someone who never knew about the apartheid till I was much older and having read a lot about it only recently from my visit, I have to say this cleared all questions I had about it. Never again must we revert to these primitive methods of living and always ensure that the South Africans have the democracy they all yearn for & deserve. I especially enjoyed the Nelson Mandela exhibition, where you really live through his experiences. Highly recommended!

As a human of the darker skin shade, stepping into this museum gave us a serial of goosebumps as we peeked into the dark history of Apartheid in South Africa. It took us some time to comprehend the heinous crimes committed in the name of racial discrimination and this museum stands as a grim reminder of the inhumanity of humans. Wonderfully curated, simple to navigate, The Apartheid Museum will continue to guide the upcoming against the evils of our own past.

This is one of the best organised and thoughtfully designed historical museums I've visited in a while. When you enter the museum, you are immediately challenged to empathise with people who lived under Apartheid rule. It compares favourably to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. Although we had two hours, we could easily have used another hour. If you read English, you do not need a guide. NOTE: no photos can be taken once you enter.

Absolutely a must see museum when visiting South Africa. I would love children from all over the world would visit it and learn from great historical mistakes against people that are different from the ruling class. Very detailed explanations and pictures of the recent history (75 years) of South Africa. This visit must be done twice, one to learn the history and again once you have absorbed it, analyzed the wrongs of the past and revisit the history to complete your overall understanding of the culture and how this could happen again anywhere in the world.

The number one thing I wanted to do while in Johannesburg was to visit the Apartheid Museum. There is so much history to learn while walking through this museum. Make sure to give yourself 2 to 3 hours if you want to see everything. There was also a special exhibit of Nelson Mandelas life, which was also amazing to learn all about. There's also a little shop and restaurant as you are about to exit.

‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’ So said Spanish-American philosopher George Santayana. These harrowing exhibits, as well as those highlighting the resolve and dignity of the movement for freedom and democracy, will help keep us from forgetting, and thus being susceptible to similar errors in the future.

The museum is really well done and offers an incredible look into this really sad part of South African history. (Translated by Google) It tells you the story of how Apartheid was installed and evolved during the more than 40 years that it governed trying to make you experience suffering and the tireless fight to abolish it during your visit. The visit requires a minimum of 3 hours to visit it with ease. But is it worth it. That if it is only in English, if your English is not good it is better that you go with a guide in your language to make the most of the experience. Eso si está solo en inglés, si tu inglés no es bueno es mejor que vayas con un guía en tu idioma para aprovechar al máximo la experiencia.

This museum presents a structured approach for South Africa history, with a high focus on the presence of apartheid. However, at the entry it is said that you can visit the museum in 2h and it is impossible to see everything and to read everything in that time. It has too much information. I have spent 6h inside and still wasn't able to see everything with attention. I would suggest to divide this museum in 2 different museums, maybe one for South Africa history and other just for apartheid.

I could not complete the tour of this museum because I was flooded with emotions that I could not process. Knowledge of history is essential for everyone. If it is ever possible to say that an organization did too well of a job in capturing history, this is it. I can't imagine the horrors of those who actually lived through Arpatheid.

If you are a visitor to South Africa or even a local, take the time to visit the Apartheid museum in Johannesburg. A journey through our history, the atrocities, the challenges, the courage, the victories and the courageous people instrumental in bringing about change to South Africa in a dark time. Visuals, audio and film of every aspect of our history. Well set out and presented. You will need a good few hours to wind through the museum and take it all in. One issue we found was that while accompanying a sight challenged person, there needs to be a headset setup that they can take in all the literature displayed in a format that works for them. Well worth the visit.

The Apartheid Museum is a museum in Johannesburg, South Africa illustrating apartheid and the 20th century history of South Africa. The museum, part of the Gold Reef City complex, was opened in November 2001.At least five times a year events are held at the museum to celebrate the end of apartheid and the start of multiracial democracy for the people of South Africa.

This is an excellent museum telling the history of apartheid South Africa. The exhibition first gives the background of colonisation of the Cape and then describes the evolution of racial segregation. It took 3.5hrs to go through the museum, but I did read most of the info and watched the films. There are certain info boards that are 'core material' - if you read only those then apparently it takes 1h30m. There's a cafe and gift shop at the end. No photos allowed inside the museum.

Just wanted to thank you for whatever you did for me. You don't know what I was going through. There was a time, when I gave up on everything. Coz, there was not a single reason to do anything. I was really stressed and hassled at that time. But, your timing in my life was more than perfect. I think you entered my life as sunshine. You did so much for me that I really can't thank you enough. I just want to let you know that you are the best person I have ever met. I sincerely appreciate everything you did for me. Thank you!I personally want to thank you for the assistance you provided me. I want to thank you for the time you took out from your busy schedule. If it would not have been for you, I would have found difficult to manage everything alone. I want to thank you for all the great efforts you have made. You managed everything so well, that I really am quite relieved now. I just want to tell you that I will always appreciate your kind gesture. You don't know what you have done for me. I will forever remain indebted to you for your this gesture.

It is a must place to go. It will help you to understand where we are, what happened here almost yesterday and why. I went twice and took 7 hours to read all the panels, but it was a well invested time. The best way to not repeat errors is to learn about our past.

It is definitely a must see when in Joburg /Pretoria. The museum itself I found a bit confusing and overwhelming. Better signage and guidance by real people would be much appreciated. If I wouldn't have done it I would book a tour guide if available because it's too much information what's written everywhere. The film material is informative but brutal and disturbing if you have been growing up in a safe place. It's currently open Thursday til Sunday. And there is a Café that sells toasted sandwiches and drinks..

We absolutely loved our experience. We arrived early and took our time. Although I'd recommend it for older kids. My 16 year old wanted to spend all morning here, however my 14 and 10year old soon became hungry and tired. The museum is brilliantly set up with up-to-date information. Not much in way of food but conveniently located near the casino which had restaurants as well fast food places nearby..100%recommended as a day out in JHB.

Okay so I actually don't know how to rate this place without being biased. In terms of the way they designed it, I'd say they did an amazing job. I felt a chill the entire time I was there. They managed to capture the cruelty and inhumanity of that system . It is triggering though. I didn't live through the atrocities of Apartheid but my family did and yeah, from that angle it was overwhelming. If you are non-white, please prepare yourself. The only thing I'd critique is that they have subtitles in their documentaries to make it accessible for everyone.

This was such a special stop in our Johannesburg time. It was our favorite museum and we wish we had two days to full go through it. Our kids are 14, 13, 11 & 10 and it was excellent for all. We did not love the cafe food.

Museum is very well done and artistic too. Great transition though history in South Africa. I did this on a day Joburg tour, 2 hours is sufficient to see everything and read. Goes well with visiting Soweto too, the township that is a key example of segregation, separation laws, and racism. Temporary exhibits on Mandela and Tutu are wonderful right now. No pictures to be taken inside. Right next to Gold Reef in case you also want to visit a casino and amusement park. Note, it is open 5 days a week now, so check the schedule.

  • 4/5 Marco M. 1 year ago on Google
Really informative museum, especially if done in combination with a visit to Soweto (absolutely recommended!). The museum has material for many hours of visit, so you can choose how deeply into detail you want to go. Highlight for me was the 20 min video about the 80s protests - very powerful, leaves you wanting to know even more about the story of this amazing country.

  • 5/5 MMS 1 year ago on Google
If you want to know the history behind racism and rights, you should definitely go there. The museum is big and has many aspects of exploration of positive and negatives sites of the mankind. There is good but it only came from the fight against dark where people died to get their rights. Life is short and your enlightenment will be heavily driven by this place for sure.

Excellent museum. Oddly situated next to Gold Reef City using the same entrance. Very immersive with plenty of detail about the origins of apartheid. Had video footage and artefacts too including one of the armoured carriers. Not much for young kids to see (as expected given the subject matter). Could easily spend 2 hours here. Toilets were average.

  • 5/5 Shaheer H. 4 months ago on Google
The Apartheid Museum was incredibly emotional. Walking through the exhibits, feeling the weight of the struggles and injustices people faced, you can't help but be moved by the stories and images that portray the immense segregation, suffering, and the fight for equality. It really hit me how these stories of oppression are still present in the world, just across different places and how we must do more as a society.

Visiting the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg is an emotionally profound and enlightening experience. From the moment you step in, the museum immerses you in the somber reality of South Africa's past. Its powerful exhibits are thoughtfully curated, taking visitors on a deeply moving journey through the rise and fall of apartheid. Each exhibit is a testament to the resilience and courage of those who fought against the oppressive system, with of course its primal figure Nelson Mandela. The museum doesn't shy away from presenting the harsh truths of racial segregation and discrimination, making it a poignant educational experience. The multitude of personal stories and artifacts showcased bring a deeply human perspective to the historical events, allowing visitors to connect with the past on a personal level. What's truly heartwarming is the museum's dedication to fostering a sense of hope and unity. It not only focuses on the struggles and injustices but also celebrates the triumph of the human spirit and the nation's journey towards freedom and equality. The museum serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding history to build a better future. The visit is likely to leave you with a mix of emotions - from sadness and anger to inspiration and hope. The Apartheid Museum is more than just a museum; it's a powerful homage to the indomitable spirit of South Africa, a tribute to its hero , and a beacon of hope for a world free from discrimination and injustice.
