Sri Mahalinga Swamy temple in Thiruvidaimarudur is located  8Km  from Kumbakonam and is one among the three important Saivite shrines in India. The temple is huge with a five-tiered Rajagopuram and three praharams. There is a separate shrine for Mookambiga which resembles the Kollur Mookambika temple. People pray to Mookambika for childbirth and safe delivery. Sakthi shrine is also known as one of the Sakthi Bheetams. According to historical records, once king Varaguna Pandiya’s horse accidentally killed a brahmin. This brahmahathi dosham sin followed wherever he went. The king sought asylum in Lord Mahalingaswamy temple. The Brahmahathi was still waiting outside the entrance for the king to come out and could not catch him again since he went out of the rear entrance. The king was relieved of his dosham. People inflicted with mental disorders are cured by going around the temple praharams. Special Archana is performed to the 27 Lingams present in this temple for all 27 stars. This temple was built by Pandya king, Varaguna Pandya apart from other kings. This temple is praised by Appar, Manickavasagar, Sundarar, Sambandar (padal petra sthalam) and also Arunagirinathar. This Temple is a must visit one for Hindus. Very divine. Adequate car parking is available. Restaurants are available at Aaduthurai, nearby.

The temple of Mahalingeswarar in Thiruvidaimaruthur is a well known temple in Kumbakonam Mayavaram Highway. The huge temple complex is worth visiting and will take minimum two hours for looking around. An ancient temple with devaram hymns in the praise of lord has several praharas for walk around. More than a normal temple visit, people flock here for the brahamahasti dosham pooja. Pooja is conducted near the second gopuram and conducted for a fixed charges. After pooja people enter through the second gopuram where the brahamahasti statue located in a pedestal and after worshipping Mahalingeswarar has to go through the Amman temple and come out of that entrance. Places are available for rent to bath and clean up in front of the east gopuram near the temple tank. Due to the large visitors inflow parking in front of the temple is crowded. Park near the temple rathas in East mada Street for easy access.

Mahalingeswaraswamy Temple, Thiruvidaimarudur is a Hindu temple dedicated to the deity Shiva, located in Tiruvidaimaruthur, a village in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is significant to the Hindu sect of Saivism as one of the seven major Shiva temples. Shiva is worshiped as Mahalingeswaraswamy, and is represented by the lingam, with his idol referred to as Jyothirmayalingam. His consort Mookambika is depicted as Devi Bruhatsundarakuchaambika or Bruhatsundarakuchaambigai amman. The lingam of the temple is believed to be the focal point for the seven consorts of Shiva. The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, written by Tamil poet saints known as the nayanars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam.[1] The 9th century Saiva saint poet Manikkavacakar has sung praise about the temple in his works.

One of the greatest Shiv temple of Tamilnadu, with awesome energy. It is a huge temple with huge tank in front of temple. The temple is famous for Brahmahatya dosh parihar. One has to reach temple by 0730 for the parihar. It is done everyday in two batches. Then buy parihar ticket which is Rs. 750. Near the big Nandi vigrah there is space which is marked for ritual. Everyone sits down on floor and they are provided with some puja items in a plate. Then it takes around 1 hour for ritual. All material is collected back. Then people visit a stone relief a human figure which represents Brahmhatya , and situated nearby. One has to rotate handful salt on the head and along with some money keep in the receptacle kept there. Then people visit a mandap where 27 nakshatra shivling are there. One has to put some flowers and lit ghee diya in front of his najshatra shivling. Also lit ghee diya in front of Shivling, Ganesh and Guru vigrah in the mandap. After visit main sanctum of Shiv and then Shakti, and other shrines. Finally one has to get out of the North door of temple, and not from the main entrance, which is symbolic of Brahmahatya dosh left behind.

Shri Mahalingeswarar temple, Thiruvidaimarudur, about 10 kms from Kumbakonam is one of the oldest and largest Shiva temple, praised in 7th century hymns of Saiva saints. Constructed, expanded and modified by Pandyas, Cholas, Nayakars and Maratha rulers over past many centuries, the temple is under the administration of Thiruvaduthurai Adeenam (Saiva Mutt). Sri Mookambikai in seperate sannidhi. Requires better maintenance.

A big old rock built Shiva temple with Mesmerizing big walls and look from interior. Bramahati dosha pariharam done here. You need to be there at at 7 am morning through the Eastern entrance.. Take shower in the pond and dress up traditionally. Pay Rs.850/- for dosha pariharam and extra Rs.101/- for datchinai per person only. After doing the pariharam visit the Moolavar and ambaal. After rituals, walk around the big path of temple which is like doing an Ashvametha yaagam. Then exit from the North entrance.

It is a very big temple which takes easily over an hour to see it completely. I know it's summer but building a shed and planning all the wiring just in front of the beautiful goburam is not a good plan.

The mighty beauty, sthala vriksham madhura maram, and it has 7 praharas, circumbating/ doing parikrama for each prahara will give you a benefit, the third prahara where the madhura vanam /tree is there, circling the tree gives you the benefits same as circling Mount Kailash, The seventh praaharam ...circling it gives you the benefits of making the ashwametha yaagam. The temple is so big that you can't take eyes of each and every details with in the temple. Must visit.
