Mar Thoma Jacobite Syrian Cheriyapally is a very famous pilgrim centre. St. Thomas Church at Kothamangalam, popularly known as Mar Thoma Cheriapally, where the holy tomb of Saint Baselios Yeldho (Maphryono Mor Baselios Yeldho) is located. The people of Kothamangalam celebrate the Mar Thoma Cheriapally festival on October 2 and 3 every year with piety and festivity. The Festival is popularly known as ‘Kanni 20 Perunnal’. In remembrance to the instance of guiding Mor Yeldho Bava to this church by a Nair (Hindu) Youth, his successors are still given the privilege to hold the traditional lamp of the church and lead the ‘Rassa’ (Church procession) to the church on the festival day of the saint.

One of the prominent Jacobite churches among Malayalis across the globe. Maybe not just for Malayalis, as this church is famous for the feast of Mor Baselios Yeldo, a Syriac Orthodox saint who arrived in Kothamangalam from Antioch. He is entombed on the altar of this church. On October 2&3, (which is on Malayalam month "Kanni" 19-20) this church celebrates the church festival when people from different places gather here and make the church flooded with the worshippers.

A historic church in the heart of Kothamangalam city where you can feel relieved and peaceful. This church was built in 15th century A.D and in the year of 1685 the church and the place was blessed with the presence of His Beatitude Baseliose Yeldo Maphriyano ( Syriac Orthodox Bishop ) H.B died in the same year staying there for just 20 days and entombed in the main alter of the church. Every year october 2,3 the main feast of the church is observed to commemorate the memory of H.B. This church finds a shelter home for many those who are needy. This church is in the Kothamangalam region of Angamaly diocese of Holy Jacobite Syrian Church ( Under the Holy apostolic throne of Antioch and all the East ). The church has many educational , Service institutions under it. May the Intercession of Saint Yeldo Bava with us.

During kanni 11th on the Malayalam calendar at AD 1685 Saint Baselios Yeldo reached the church. The church bell sound louded and people gathered to know Its reason. There was a young ordained minister of an order ranking below that of priest who knew Syriac. He suddenly went to an episcopo nearby after taking a handkerchief from the saint for proof. After hearing this, episcopo along with the rest of the people came to the church. The vicar of the church went to ask permission from saint to conduct the festival. Saint said that kanni 14th is perfect for the festival so as to remember the Holly cross. After the Holy Mass by the saint, the Episcopal became a Metropolitan. Later bava became seriously ill and on kanni 19th (29 September), he left the world at the age of 92. When his soul left him, people who gathered saw a miracle which the saint had notified them early. The large cross made of granite situated in the western part of the church had lit up. All the worshippers were shocked a started believing in depth. After the death of Maphrian, worshippers experienced many great miracles which further increased the worshippers. The name Yelda(East Syriac)/Yeldo(West Syriac) means Christmas. Yelda/Yeldo lent(Nativity lent) starts 15 December till 25 December. Various spellings are used to write Yeldo (യെൽദൊ) in English viz. Yeldho, Eldho, Eldo. Basil is the short form for Baselios which mean King or Emperor. This name originally is from Greek- Basileus. Many people come and pray at the Tomb of Yeldo and promise that if they were blessed with a baby, they would name their baby as 'Yeldo' or 'Basil'. It is believed that people having these names are more than lakhs of lakhs nowadays.

It's one of the most visited churches in the state of Kerala. People irrespective of religion visit the church regularly. I'm visiting the Church after a long time and it was crowded as usual. People should be aware of the ravaging covid-19 virus before entering the church premises as minute negligence can lead one to sickness.

Ancient and historic church of universal syrian orthodox church(Jacobite). Years before  St. Mor Baselios Yeldo Maphriyano(Syriac Orthodox Bishop) came to this church from iraq and the saint was buried in the altar room of this church. Dhukrono(Remembrance) of the saint is celebrated in the Mar Thoma Church (Cheriapally) at Kothamangalam with spiritual grandeur every year on October 2 and 3 and is popularly known as Kanni 20 Perunnal. In remembrance to the instance of guiding Mor Yeldho Bava to this church by a Nair (Hindu) Youth, his successors are still given the privilege to hold the traditional lamp of the church and lead the Rassa (Church procession) to the church on the festival day of the saint. Must attend kanni 20 perunnal celebrated on Oct 2,3

Beautifully painted in white, it houses the Tomb of revered Saint Baselios Yeldo who was the Maphrian of the East of the Syriac Orthodox Church from 1678 until his resignation in 1684. He is venerated as a saint in the Syriac Orthodox Church, Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church and Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and his feast day is 3 October. No photograph of the revered saint exists and therefore the image of his tomb is used for veneration. Also many people stay here overnight or for 2-3 days as penance and as Nercha. Boys who are baptised here are mostly given the names Yeldo/ Eldhose/ Basil.

The church is huge in area. It gives the typical Roman catholic church vibes as soon as we enter, right from the architecture to the worship. It has ample parking and is usually crowded on all days of the week. Good thing about the church is, it welcomes people from all places, denominations without any restrictions. I have spent a few minutes in this church praying, and it was very peaceful and a different experience. They serve lime water for free to whoever visits the church which is not common in all places. I would recommend visiting this place when you are around to spend some peaceful time with the Almighty.

The St. Thomas Church at Kothamangalam, popularly known as Mar Thoma Cheriapally, where the Saint Baselios Yeldho is buried is one of the most prominent parishes in India. According to the popular belief, the first church at Kothamangalam, Martha Mariam Valiyapally, was established in the 4th century AD by a few Syriac Christian families who migrated from Paravur and Angamali. Among the later Christian inhabitants of the place included a few Syrian Knanaites who eventually intermingled with the local Christian community
