Ridhivihara
is
a
Theravada
Buddhist
shrine
built
by
King
Dutugemunu
in
the
2nd-century
BC,
located
in
the
village
of
Ridhigama,
Sri
Lanka.
This
temple
is
located
in
Kurunegala
district.
In
Mahavamsa
this
place
is
known
as
"Rajata
Lena".
According
to
legends,
it
is
said
that
King
Dutugemunu
got
silver
from
this
place
during
the
construction
of
Ruwanweli
Saya.
Hence
it
was
called
'Silver
Temple'.
The
temples
that
are
currently
seen
here
were
built
by
King
Keerthi
Sri
Rajasingha
who
ruled
Kandy.
A
valuable
unique
feature
or
product
here
is
the
door
made
of
ivory.
Its
top
is
decorated
with
carvings
called
"Panchanarighataya".
The
Buddha
image
here
is
twelve
cubits
high.
In
the
middle
of
it
is
a
dragon
pantheon.
During
the
time
of
King
Dutugemunu,
the
main
road
from
Anuradhapura
to
Malaya
country
passed
near
this
place.
In
legend,
this
temple
is
called
"Varaka
Chagu
Vihara".
This
is
also
mentioned
in
historical
books.
The
pagoda
is
located
on
the
rock.
Below
the
rock
is
the
great
temple.
The
keys
attached
to
the
doors
of
this
temple
were
used
during
the
days
of
Sinhalese
kings.
Mural
paintings
can
be
seen
in
the
upper
temple.
