Most famous Buddhist temple.Ridi Viharaya  is a 2nd-century Buddhist temple in the village of Ridigama, Srilanka. Built during the reign of Dhutugamunu of Anuradhapura, the temple is considered as the place where the silver ore, which provided silver to complete Ruwanwalisaya one of the largest stupa in Sri Lanka, was discovered. Very peaceful place to visit in normal day. One of the beautiful temple which i have seen in Srilanka. More like to Dambulla cave tample. Nice and sacred place to visit in Srilanka.

No tickets are required to enter the premises. You can donate some money if you like for the maintanance. This is a ancient cave temple that has been built by king Dutugemunu. It is known that this king found silver from this area and as a tribute to that he built this temple. It is a beautiful cave temple and the Buddha statues are unique. Oldest one is known as "waraka walandu wiharaya". Beautiful paintings are the most unique feature of this temple. Ample parking is available and road navigation is really easy as there are signs in the road.

Beautiful ancient temple which is known to be built by the Great King Dutugemunu and there are folk stories about this temple. It's situated in Kurunegala District and it is full of serenity. There are ancient statues of Lord Buddha and beautiful drawings as well as carvings. They have books which the devotees can buy in which the stories about the temple are highlighted. There are flower shops at the entrance where devotees can buy flowers to offer. There is a canteen in which they have snacks and beverages. Temple premises are well maintained with dustbins placed everywhere and they are protected with a metal casing maybe because there were so many monkeys on the trees close by.

Approximately 18 kilometres northeast of Kurunegala, Ridi Viharaya is located in the city of Ridigama. Kurunegala is located 94 kilometres northeast of Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. The temple is approximately 10 kilometres from Ibbagamuwa, in the A6 highway, which connects Kurunegala and Dambulla.

The monastery has an elephant bound with iron chains on his foots under the tree. He has no water and nothing to eat. This is gruelty! Why you are doing that? You are greedy? You like to have his ivory? As buddhist you should have metta and know the law of karma. Next life you will be the elephant.

Old temple but a lot of things to watch. Clam environment.. mind relaxing on weekdays. Poya day is too busy. Large parking space available. A small museum is also established. You can enjoy a small hike experience by visiting the Yahan gala. No payment or tickets are needed for entertaining the temple and parking.

Ridhivihara is a Theravada Buddhist shrine built by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd-century BC, located in the village of Ridhigama, Sri Lanka. This temple is located in Kurunegala district. In Mahavamsa this place is known as "Rajata Lena". According to legends, it is said that King Dutugemunu got silver from this place during the construction of Ruwanweli Saya. Hence it was called 'Silver Temple'. The temples that are currently seen here were built by King Keerthi Sri Rajasingha who ruled Kandy. A valuable unique feature or product here is the door made of ivory. Its top is decorated with carvings called "Panchanarighataya". The Buddha image here is twelve cubits high. In the middle of it is a dragon pantheon. During the time of King Dutugemunu, the main road from Anuradhapura to Malaya country passed near this place. In legend, this temple is called "Varaka Chagu Vihara". This is also mentioned in historical books. The pagoda is located on the rock. Below the rock is the great temple. The keys attached to the doors of this temple were used during the days of Sinhalese kings. Mural paintings can be seen in the upper temple.

There ara many valuable things to see in this temple. Also better to make an appointment to stay in the temple, there are comfortable rooms to stay to see the beauty and most important historical areas in Ridigama.

Very rare experience you can get. This temple is mostly hidden in dambulla area. But when you visit you will see how magnificent this place is. This can be a major tourist attraction point, but now only few people visit here because most of people don't know about this place

An ancient Buddhist temple that was built centuries back. Even though some parts are renovated, most of the ancient paintings, sculptures are still there. Parking is available but can be crowded in Poya days. Temple is adjacent to a forest and lot of bird life can be observed and heard.

We went there on poya day 20/10/2021. Give you few informations for the sake of your journey. ***You have to take your food or should eat outside of this area, because near this place you can’t find any shops to take food items. That day I saw only one ice cream seller. *** There is a place called “Pahan wata “ . If you like to see this place You have to walk 800m . It’s better carrying your shoes.

It is believed that when King Dutugemunu was looking for raw materials to make Ruwanweli Seya , silver was found at the site of this temple. It has a calm and quiet environment. Massive physical development has taken place, and it has not been done to the detriment of the natural environment. Here, we got to see the tomb of the first mahanayake thero of Thibbattuwa, Sri Buddharakkhita Malwathu Parshwa, who was the first head of this temple. Also, a series of pottery bricks were found during the Dutch period, which included the image of Christ.

This is one of the significant Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. One of the most scenic temples I have ever visited. There was a special pooja on the day I visited, so the temple was beautifully decorated. There are very old paintings and statues inside the historic stone caves. The temple has spread within a huge area and embedded in nature, which gave it a unbelievably calming feeling. The temple is surrounded by a forest and you can take a small hike through the forest upto pahangala which is a good viewpoint.

A Theravada Buddhist temple named Ridi Viharaya Silver Temple was built in the Sri Lankan town of Ridigama in the second century BCE. The temple, which was constructed during the reign of Dutthagamani of Anuradhapura, is thought to have been the site of the discovery of the silver ore that gave the silver needed to create Ruwanwelisaya, one of Sri Lanka's greatest stupas. The Ridi Viharaya complex was constructed as a token of appreciation for enabling him to cherish his desire of completing Ruwanwelisaya, according to the histories Mahavamsa and Thupavamsa.

You can have a blend experience of nature, history and religious place at ridi viharaya. According to legends a silver depository was discovered here which provided silver to complete Ruwanwelisaya; one of the largest stupa in Sri Lanka, was discovered. Hence the greatest King of Dutugemunu established this Vihara in respect of that.

Ridivihara One of the ancient places you must see when you are in Kurunegala District. Ridivihara was built in the 2nd century BC during the reign of King Dutugamunu. According to the chronicles of Mahawamsa and Thupawamsa the Ridivihara was built in gratitude for supplying the Silver needed for the construction of the Ruwnwelisaya. Legend was,  when a merchant was passing this area he found a ripen jack fruit. He offered the jack fruit to a Arahath Thero. The merchant was shown the direction where he wanted to go by the Thero. When he went on this way he found a cave. Inside the cave he saw a silver ore. When the news of the Silver ore reached  the King he sent the men to bring the Silver and used this silver for the construction of the Mahaseya. In gratitude the king built a vihara in the cave. The village where the ore was found named as Ridigama. Some of the other important places in the Vihara premises are Gedige temple Upper temple image House Ivory carvings Tiles depicting Jesus’s life story Makara thorana Moon stone Buddha statue King Dutugamunu statue etc.

Ridi Vihara means silver temple. It was built by King Dutugemunu on the site of a great silver ore deposit. That silver was used for the Ruwanwelisaya stupa in Anuradhapura, but the temple here is still quite a sight.

Very nice temple to visit. It's just 20km away from kurunegala (but doesn't take much time as the road is good and not much traffic). Ample parking space available. You need at least 2 hours to see everything. Better to keep about 3 Hours for ridi viharaya when you plan a trip.
