Kingdom of Panduwasnuwara (Parakramapura) The ancient capital Panduwasnuwara is located 122 km away from Colombo in Kurunegala district, north-eastern province of Sri Lanka. 27 km from Kurunegala town on Kurunegala – Chilaw main road. The ruins at Panduwasnuwara is belong to the 12th century when it was known by Parakramapura. Parakramapura is the capital of Sri Lanka for a very brief period. King Parakramabahu set up his temporary capital in this city in 1140 A.D. As the Successor of his uncle king Kirti Sri Megha, prince Parakramabahu became the ruler of Dakkhinadesa in 1140 A.D. It was the first capital of Parakramabahu and one of the three discrete kingdoms into which the Island was divided. During this time period he had constructed a separate temple at Panduwasnuwara Raja Maha Vihara premises for Tooth relic of Buddha to keep it safe. After series of successful battles with his enemies Parakramabahu managed to conquer the control of entire nation and moved to Polonnaruwawhere his new capital was built. The tooth relic of Buddha was also brought with him as the reputed symbol of principality. According to polk stoty of history, the city of Panduwasnuwara was established by King Panduvasudev, successor to King Vijaya, the founder of the nation in the fifth century BC.

King Parakramabahu set up Panduwasnuwara as a temporary capital in the 12th Century before he united the entire country and made Polonnaruwa his capital. Although most of the ruins are from the time of King Parakramabahu, the history of Panduwasnuwara dates further back to the pre-Anuradapura period. The ruins contain a prison known as "Ektam Ge" for Princess Unmada Chithra who was the only daughter of king Panduwasdewa. The 10 sons of king Panduwasdewa believed a prophecy that if Unmada Chitra had a son, the son would kill all the uncles and assert to the throne so she was imprisoned under heavy protection. A prince named Deega Gamini managed to escape the protection and the two had a child who later killed the uncles as predicted and became the ruler under the name King Pandukabaya. Panduwasnuwara is a site worth visiting. It doesn't have the glory as Anuradapura or Polonnaruwa but the history is fascinating. The entire complex can be covered in around 1hour. No tickets.

(Translated by Google) It is one of the four sites identified by the Central Cultural Fund as Wayamba Square. Panduwasnuwara is of special importance as King Parakramabahu the Great made Polonnaruwa his capital during his tenure as the Regional Ruler of the Southern Province, preparing for it before becoming the ruler of the whole of Sri Lanka. It appears that the king enlarged an existing tank here and prepared to capture Polonnaruwa by developing agriculture in the whole area and a valuable palace was built there. At that time it was called "Parakramapura". The ruins of the palace are visible here and from the topography it is similar to the palace in Polonnaruwa but not so big. Bhuvanekabahu I (1272-1284), the last king of Dambadeniya, took the kingdom to Yapahuwa. It is said that during the period of anarchy which lasted for about a year after his death, the Pandya army invaded the country and abducted the relics of the Tooth Relic and the Pathra (1293). It seems that he lived in Panduwasnuwara for a while. Those events date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. The ruins of Panduwasnuwara are spread over about 20 hectares. Ancient Kingdom of Panduwasnuwara. King Parakramabahu set up this City as the Capital in the 12th Century. A famous story of Princess Unmada Chithra, the youngest daughter of King Panduwasdeva, who was isolated in one of the high tower buildings, called "Chakrawalaya" due to a prediction made that if she gets pregnant her son will kill all of her 11 brothers for the Throne. A Prince sneaks into the chamber and the son Pandukabaya was born. At the age of 16, he killed his uncles to have the throne and became one of the greatest kings of Sri Lanka ruling for 70 years, from the Kingdom of Anuradhapura.

Ruins include remains of the palace, Stupa, terraces, dwelling houses, Remains of Buddhist monastery and ancient fortress surrounded by wide water canals. The ground plan of the royal palace is fascinating. Love the green surroundings.

Very bad maintenance. When I visited this place several years ago, it was very good. Everything was in order and there were even guides to explain it to us. But now everything is going back to ruin. Cant even see all the ruins due to jungle. I just feel bad about all the effort and time put into carefully discovering the ruins.

There's actually nothing to see in this place right now. Nothing is organized and maintained. Only thing I saw was few couples hanging around trees. There's is this temple which also has become a place to earn money. But if you want to buy some pots, this is the best place.

Calm and beautiful place with lot of ruins relates to Anuradhapura(actually before the time that anuradhapura become the capital. Some places are connected with the chronicle of king Pandukabhaya) And Polonnaru eras. The palace is the most identified place which built by King Parakramabahu (1) when he was the ruler of "Dakkhina Desha".So that there are so many similarities between this palace and Waijayantha Prasada of Polonnaruwa.(The palace of great Parakramabahu ).Most of the remaining structures of Panduwasnuwara kingdom gives a Picture of Ancient Polonnaruwa.

Panduwasnuwara is an ancient capital, situated in Kurunegala District, Sri Lanka. It is said to be the controlling centre known as Parakramapura of Dakkhinadesa (South Country) in the 12th century, when it was ruled by Parakramabahu. The remaining ruins of the ancient kingdom still can be seen at Kotampitiya area which lies along Wariyapola-Chilaw main road about 19 km (12 mi) away from Wariyapola town.

I recently visited the Panduwasnuwara Kingdom and was absolutely fascinated by the historical and cultural significance of this ancient site which is having lack of attraction from tourists. Its located roadside and just 30 minutues is sufficeint to cover the site if you are in a rush. The ruins are beautifully preserved and provide a glimpse into the life and times of the ancient Sri Lankan civilization during the times of King Nissankamalla and King Parakramabahu I. The architecture of the ancient palace and other structures are truly remarkable, and the knowledgeable guides provided valuable insights into the history and significance of each location. The surrounding natural beauty of the area adds to the overall experience. I highly recommend a visit to this historic site for anyone interested in ancient history, architecture, and culture. It is truly a must-visit destination for anyone visiting Sri Lanka.

Panduwasnuwara is an ancient city in the Kurunegala area which functioned as the capital of Sri Lanka for a very brief period. King Parakramabahu set up his temporary capital in this city during the 12th century. During this period, Panduwasnuwara was the city housing the sacred tooth relic which was brought back to Sri Lanka from India by King Parakramabahu. In our article on Yapahuwa, you would have read how the relic was captured from Yapahuwa by the invading Indian armies and how it was retrieved and brought back by this king.

Panduwasnuwara Kingdom was built in 12th century. No reservation is required. No fee is charged. You can freely visit. The site is maintained by the department of Archaeology, but maintenance could be further improved. No guided tours available. A book published by the department of Archaeology called ‘Asirimath Paduwasnuwara’ would be helpful to self-understand the site. The book is sold by a close to the site. It is also available at the book outlet of the department of Archaeology at Paduwasnuwara Rajamaha Viharaya. You can also visit the museum free-of charge all the days other than Tuesdays.

(Translated by Google) King Parakramabahu established a kingdom here to consolidate his sovereignty in a short period of time. In addition, archeology has not yet confirmed the existence of this connection with King Paduwasdev, despite its popularity. The inscription here confirms that King Nissanka Malla also visited at one time. It is said that the tomb of King Vijaya is located nearby.
