This is the main church of Diocese of Kurunegala and dedicated to St.Anne. Church is the cathedral of this diocese. Church celebrated it's bi centenary jubilee 2020 july. Church has around 600 catholic families. Cathedral was repaired recently and now looking beautiful.

The history of St. Anne's Cathedral goes back to about 1819. It is said that at that time Kurunegala belonged to Kandy parish. It is said that there was a chapel in this place around 1840 dedicated to St. Anne. The present cathedral was built in 1854. From 1861 to 1869, Fr. Francis Xavier served as the first parish priest of this church and at that time this parish was belonged to the diocese of Jaffna. In 1904 this parish was transferred to the Archdiocese of Colombo and in 1938 it was handed over to the Diocese of Chilaw. After the establishment of the Chilaw Diocese in 1987, this church belonged to the Chilaw Diocese. This church and the altar were consecrated on July 27, 1988, in the event of 1st anniversary of the new bishop Rev. Dr. Raymond Peiris.

It's one of ancient church in Sri Lanka. It's beautiful.
