This is one of the most popular Buddhist Temple and also the Main Monastery of Mahamevnawa Chain of Buddhism and Buddhist Meditation practicing centres worldwide. If anybody visits Sri Lanka, they must have a visit to this place as well as better to get some knowledge about the Theravada Buddhism and it's applications for a successful, Meaningful and practical life by talking to one of the kind resident monks. The Most Venerable Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thero is the one who developed this Mahamevnawa Therawada Buddhist practice centre which is a real mirror image of well disciplined ancient Therawada Practice of Lord Buddha's time. The magnificent Sri Sambuddha Raja Maligawa is a fine and creative offering to Lord Buddha built with pious architecture. This famous monastery is fully crowded most days of the year with pious Buddhist devotees.

Absolutely mesmerizing, stunning, indescribable, hard to imagine such a detailed, organized, beautiful place exists in a small place as this town. When you go here, you see the golden monastery, and then you get close and you see the amount of detail that went into each sculpture, the designs, it's just breathtaking. The monks that reside here are very nice, they will explain any questions you have and it's such a tranquil place. This is definitely a must visit.

Honestly i didn't feel the peacefulness that you usually get in a temple in this place. All the gold color statues made those calm and peaceful feelings go away in an instant. But of course as a work of art this place is amazing!

A beautiful Buddhist temple with golden statues. The statues are made with holy relics inside & they are regigiously most precious status. Calm & religious place. When you visit use proper attire. There is a Buddhist book stall to buy books. They are not allowed to take photos of the statues of Lord Buddha. Well cleaned & properly maintained. Closed on Mondays.

Extremely elaborated place without any sense of "Minimalism" as Lord Buddha preached. Though this suppose to be a Buddhist temple which meant to Reflect Tranquility, you would feel like at a Wedding ceremony with all the Expensive gold decorations, Luxury chandeliers & ect. Not many could really understand, why this place is stuffed with so many of these Extravagance.

Mahamevnawa Polgahawela is a active Theravada Buddhist Monastery about 2.5 hours from Colombo. There are many things for visitors to see. There are a few stalls with snacks on the road outside. Free drinking water available.

Easy access from the main road (kurunegala - alawwa) Few kilometers away from the යාංගල්මෝදර Yangalmodara junction. Highly crowded place during poya days and Vesak season.

Nestled in the tranquil town of Polgahawela, the Mahamewnawa Buddhist Monastery is a sanctuary of serenity, and even in the absence of lights, it unveils a beauty that resonates with the soul. The monastery's decision to eschew artificial lighting only enhances its charm, creating an environment that is not only visually soothing but also spiritually profound. The focal point of this haven is the Buddha House, a testament to architectural elegance and simplicity. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the structure stands as a visual embodiment of the monastery's commitment to spiritual aesthetics. In the absence of artificial lights, the natural illumination from the surroundings becomes an integral part of the experience, casting the Buddha House in a gentle glow that accentuates its beauty. As you traverse the monastery grounds, a palpable sense of tranquility envelopes you. The deliberate lack of external lights not only minimizes light pollution but also fosters a deeper connection with nature. The sounds of rustling leaves and distant chants create an immersive experience, inviting visitors into a meditative state. The deliberate choice to limit external distractions aligns with the monastery's philosophy, providing a space for introspection and mental repose. The Buddha House itself is a visual marvel. The interplay of shadows and moonlight highlights the intricate carvings and architectural nuances. Each corner seems to whisper tales of devotion and simplicity, inviting contemplation and mindfulness. The absence of electric lights accentuates the timeless beauty of the structure, allowing visitors to appreciate its elegance in its most organic state. In this era of constant stimulation, the Mahamewnawa Buddhist Monastery in Polgahawela stands as a refuge for those seeking respite. The intentional choice to refrain from artificial lighting transforms the monastery into a sanctuary of natural beauty and profound stillness. It is not merely a place of worship but a living testament to the harmonious coexistence of spiritual devotion and architectural grace, creating an ambiance that is not only visually captivating but, more importantly, mind-relaxing in its purest form.

Very attractive Buddhist place of worship. This place is maintained with such cleanliness and order that you won't find a single piece of litter anywhere. You have to follow strict regulations once you enter this place, such as removing headwear and footwear, not ahooting photos or videos, and following a que. These temple premises, though, offer you so much peace of mind as a result of its order and cleanliness. You won't feel like coming back. Even if you aren't a Buddhist, you still can feel the calming nature here. Be sure to visit this place on a non Poya day as this place is very crowded on Poya days.

    1. Here they teach, by using authoriative buddhist doctrines only. That is rare. They teach how we may prevent, going to hell, becoming a hungry ghost, becoming an animal, becoming a demon. 2. In order to do above, Try to achieve two things. 2.1.Practice five precepts. 2.2. And develop love or understand the greatness of four things. 2.2.1. Lord buddha 2.2.2. Monks (group) that attained enlightenment 2.2.3. The state of Everlasting-non-rebirth 2.2.4. The eight stepped method of attaining above.
