Fabulous, you would need a whole week to get around it and appreciate it all, I recommend dedicating a day to each floor! Free entry, no queue, cafe and toilets inside. I found there was sections that I loved, the millennium clock for example, wow, and the animal exhibits, and the Eskimo section, I apologise, I'm sure it's called something different, but they have coats made out of intestines! And pottery and glass, and theatrical masks, and telephones through the ages, I remember using the A and B buttoned phones via an operator, and that's the early 1980s, not that long ago surely 😬 cars and engines through the ages, and wheelchairs, bikes, light aircraft, medical equipment, it's all just fascinating. Allow yourself a whole day for this delight or at least a decent afternoon. Don't forget your camera.

Wandered into The National Museum of Scotland – a must-visit gem in Edinburgh. This captivating museum weaves together Scotland's rich history, the marvels of nature, captivating art, cutting-edge science, and a global tapestry of cultures. It's like embarking on a day-long journey of exploration and enlightenment, all conveniently housed under one roof. Educational, intriguing, and occasionally bustling in certain spots – a full-day adventure awaits! The entrance fee is Free!

That was the best time of my life. 5 stars are too few. The museum was the best way to enjoy ourselves not for a few hours but for the whole day!! Which was unbelievable. We spent 5 whole hours to see all of it and I'm sure we missed some exhibits too! In every corner you see something fascinating and interesting that keeps you engaged. You can interact with some which was awesome, you can get quizzes and every few steps you think that you learn the most interesting thing, but no, there's so much more. You learn about cultures, religion, science, animals, the planet. It was FANTASTIC. Would visit again if I had more vacation time. Staff were very informative, ready to help you in any way they can. There is a small cafeteria too to eat and rest. Bit overpriced but its definitely worth it since there is no entry fee to the museum. Be prepared though, wear good and comfy shoes.

I can’t believe how well organized this place is. You will never get bored or lost simply because the exhibits are perfectly placed and explained! It’s very big but it doesn’t seem endless, and there is a huge variety of rooms to spend time in, ranging from natural history to fashion. It caters to a lot of audiences. There is also a great cafe in the first floor, where you can also order food. Overall a great experience, and it’s free — a must see

Stunning building which is nice and bright, not overcrowded. Nice to be able to enter for free and have donation points around the place. Some really nice points of interest and they look to have some regular short term exhibits. Only downside is we found there were lots of kids running wild from school trips. They seemed to be mainly around the nature areas so it did quiet down around other areas. The roof terrace has a great view.

AWESOME!!! Bring your kids, bring your neighbors, bring your grandkids, heck bring your friends. free museum. Free toilets. Delicious cafe. Very helpful staff. Days upon days can be spent here. 8 floors, with access to the roof which has an awesome view of the city. Elevators available for use to every floor you need. We spent an hour just on floor 1 of Scotland history. Seriously this place is huge and has so many different sections. A science-robotic section is really cool and interactive. Definitely coming back.

We visit this museum during the half-term Break, a lot of kids come here and enjoy the activity. It is free of charge to enter and easy to find because it is located at the heart of the old town. We love the interactive activity and games in the technology zone, especially about F1 cars. You can try to drive the vehicle for £1 per 3 minutes. A bit of disappointment here is about the toilets which do not have enough for people when they crowed and need to keep it cleaned.

We're getting married here! Yes! In May 😍😍 You can hire rooms for the whole evening and have views to the castle. Love this museum. And a beautiful building, if that's the only reason you go. There is a new bit and the old bit, the entrance is an old crypt (brilliant gift shop here too). I love the animals and the cars. I would say it is like a down play version of the World of Illusions in some parts!⭐

Fabulous place to visit while in Edinburgh. It's free to visit, donation optional. Great place to bring kids with some interactive exhibits. Great roof terrace on floor 7 with amazing views of the city. There's a cafe and gift shop which we didn't get a chance to visit as we left just before the museum closed. I would definitely visit again.

The museum is huge with lots to see. They have exhibitions on animals, energy, physics, engineering, space, tradition, geography, culture, geology etc. I think there is something for everyone here. We spent almost 3 hours here. Entrance is free. The museum is very clean and well maintained. It’s the nicest museum that I’ve been to. They had a lot of interactive things here so we were very invested and entertained.

Hands down one of my favourite museums I have ever seen and I’ve seen quite a few. Loved this place. The displays were both factual and interactive which made the experience even more interesting. It is also extremely diverse with so many different genre of exhibits. Loved it. Will a 100 percent recommend

An absolutely fantastic storehouse of Scottish history, culture, science and innovation, along with a global touch. It should be a must-visit place if you are in Edinburgh. They do have a taxidermy preservation of the first clone sheep, Dolly. There is no admission fee to enter, and they have a good number of seating arrangements to make your visit relaxing.

A must visit museum with lots of history and displays are just amazing. Kids will love this place. There are lots of interactive displays which can be explained to children in understandable way. I enjoyed the animal section display a lot. Became a child myself. The entire museum can be explored in 3-4 hours, if you are more interested you can even spend a day. Its absolutely free.

Fabulous museum. I thought this was going to be a rainy day small meander, but I am taken back by the size and the range of how much there is to see at this museum. There is SO much to look at, and it was interesting for all age groups. I hardly managed to cover a quarter of the exhibits. I cannot wait to go back for more.

Amazing. Everything is clean, staff is very nice and helpful and the museum itself is wonderful! Rooftop with a beautiful view to the castle, coffee shop and restaurant (very expensive but you have the option to eat or coffee) and, one of the best parts for me, a huge lunch room for you to eat you own food The lunch room is located underground, I believe floor 0 between the toilets (quite hard to find if you don't know that is there). I definitely will go back!!

Honestly to say this place is free entry, is just the cherry on top to this adventure. With 3 floors and a ton to look at and play with, you really can't beat it. I spent 3 hours here with my wife and we still had to leave without and having seen everything. Honestly, it's so bright and well presented with so much to look at and experience. Truely one of the better museums I've ever seen in my travels. Just watch out for the cafe!! It's £10 for a sandwich, more of you'd like a drink. However I'd your up for supporting the museum, feel free to purchase!! There is also a restaurant on the ground floor for proper foods.

The museum is truly a highlight of a city. With so many remarkable exhibits and a stunning interior, it is a must-see for people of all ages. It covers a wide range of topics such as fashion, natural history, and human history across the world, and I could easily spend an entire afternoon in the museum. Highly recommend!

Since Scotland is part of the UK, almost all the same holidays are celebrated in the country as in England. However, only the holidays, in their spirit, Scotland strongly diffuses from the rest of the UK, and events of the UK calendar. If we compare the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, if at all such a comparison is appropriate, then I was advantageously impressed by the Museum of Scotland with its thoughtful exposition and convenience. I was very glad that the museum was opened as it is simply unwise to hide such beauty.

This one is a must go. I’d happily pay to get in (entrance is free so I left a donation). There’s so much to see and many of the exhibits actively invite you to think and appreciate the many facets of human life.

I loved the museum. The exhibitions were really interesting with a rich variety of cultures, periods etc. The combination of the old with the new building is fantastic. The cafe areas were clean and well organized. The people working there were very helpful. You do need a full day to discover every corner. Hope I will visit again.

Nice enough for a few hours, very child centred so good if that's what you want. Did feel there was a lack of 'real exhibits' as much was copy's or casts. The Scottish wing could be easier to find and had the most Scotland relevant stuff.

Fantastic museum. One of the best I have been to as a matter of fact. Best display would probably be the science area. It’s hugely interactive. Great for kids to learn and have fun too. It takes a solid few hours to see everything. This is a great day out. Highly recommend.

The National museum is an absolute must for anyone visiting Edinburgh. All the exhibits are super clean with straight forward reading explaining what you are viewing. There are plenty of interactive games for children to interact with, pressing the button of animal you think is making the sound is very entertaining. There are a number of these interactive games that are currently closed due to the current pandemic however, but even with less interactive games there is still plenty of things to see and do here. All the staff that I interacted with with extremely knowledgeable about where everything was, so absolutely no danger of ever getting lost. There is also a reasonably priced cafe too!

Loved the experience of walking through the museums. Getting to know the history of all the previous experiments and the best part was the live demonstration of how the experience is done which gave an in-depth knowledge of how things happen… we spent nearly 3-4 hours walking around and it was not enough to be honest!! Totally a must visit place!!

It's really amazing, Huge but have amazing things from all over the world even there was Egyptian Pharaoh's casket. Really loved it but need at least 3-6 hours to get the best out of it. Maybe I just saw 1/3 of it. Lot's of interactive designs there so you can see things yourself.

Great museum with everything from displays of ancient history to interesting specialties like the CERN accelerator, tweeds and Victoria Cross to the development of the typewriter and artifacts from around the world. Inside is great and not overcrowded. Modern section building is a work of art that compliments the original building. Be sure to have a map to help you get around. If you are looking for something in particular, help is always close, very friendly and helpful. I’d recommend several visits if you can because it’s worth exploring each section. The museum is free (donation always welcomed).

It’s an excellent museum! A ton of interactive opportunities and spaces to play, press buttons, try things etc. very fun. We spent about 2 hours here and it was enough for us, but if looking at all the exhibits one could spend a whole day here. We also went to the paid temporary exhibition which was really not worth the money, so I would recommend going to the museum itself, which is free, and enjoying it there!

There are a lot of beautiful things inside! Have you heard the dolly sheep? She’s inside the museum, there are a lot of different beautiful attractions. Super! If you go to Edinburgh you must have to visit this museum!!

Museum closes at 5 pm. I arrived at 1617. I had a quick tour, but enough time to know that I will return. The museum covers natural history, world cultures, sculptures, fashion And design, transportation, technology, communication and Scottish History. I was able to get a quick glance at most permanent exhibits except the one that I wanted most to visit. It was located in a hall closest to the exit- Scottish History. The attendant informed me the museum was closed when I reached the area. Overall a lovely Museum. Allow about 3 hours to truly explore the Free museum. There is a cafe and areas in which to rest if your party is still exploring. Purchase special exhibit tickets in advance as they have timed entries

Excellent museum, in a beautiful building. We were short on time so we joined the official tour at 11am (which was free). Our guide - Sue, told us all about the first people of Scotland, all the way up to the Union. The tour was meant to be an hour but Sue spoke for almost an hour and a half. It was great. She is very passionate about the topics and we learned much more than if we had explored the museum on our own. After the tour, we had a quick look in the science and technology wing and then the natural history room. I love the spaces, the museum is really well looked after. There is no cloakroom, and lockers range from £4 for a small to £7 for an extra large. A big golf umbrella just about fit in the extra large. The museum is quite warm so the lockers are a good idea. There are a few cafes / restaurants and the museum is close to the Royal Mile. The museum is FREE but you need to pay for some exhibitions so check before you visit.

Absolutely fascinating and well presented. There's a nice flow to the exhibits and they thought of everything. The Scottish sections were so interesting. The roof top patio was very well done with descriptive displays of the scenes all around and the of the fauna. Most of all, the staff here are very kind and helpful; very friendly and patient in explaining. I got lost a few times and was very impressed with how each person walked me to the right area instead of just pointing. I shall return with a larger donation next time. Thank you.

The museum is architecturally split into two parts: one is the new annex which contains exhibits focused on Scottish history and the older part of the building contain science, nature and anthropology. All exhibits are very informative and presented in an engaging way. It’s fun to visit both for children and for adults. There’s a rooftop terrace which offers amazing views of the city.

Really well laid out and designed museum in a palatable size. Consists of two connected buildings, one old and one modern. The exhibits and whole facility are easy to navigate, covering a basic overview of different civilizations, technological development, and animals. Most fun and rewarding for children but plenty to see and learn for adults too. There are tours held throughout the day that start on the hour. Don't miss the millennium clock that comes to life on the hour every hour for about 4 minutes. Budget 2-6 hours for your visit here.

  • 5/5 Alex D. 4 years ago on Google
Easily the best museum I have been to. It has something for every from the famous ‘Dolly the Sheep’ and T-Rex skeleton to fashion through time and minerals. The fact that it is FREE to enter means it’s a must do if you are in Edinburgh with some free time, even if it’s just to get out of the rain for a couple of hours. Not only this but it has arguably the best view of the city from the terrace (this tend to be closed when rainy though). I would definitely recommend.

I absolutely loved it in here. The building is just amazing and the exhibits, exciting. There was plenty of history from through the ages, not just scottish history. What fascinated me the most was the way everything has been placed in the building. It's so easy and simple to go to one area to another. Plenty of benches to have a sit, some interactive or historic. Nice place to eat or have a drink as well. Toilet facilities are very hygienic and modern. Spent a lot of time here which I can't say for most museums in the UK. A must if your a tourist and in the area.

You can get it from one of Edinburgh's seven hills, but the view from the museum is in the middle of the old town. One of the best museums I have ever been to. The museum is very interactive. A definite must to bring kids here, they will love it. It is interesting to adults as well. Exhibitions ranging from cultures to technology, space/universe, minerals/rocks, animals, fashion and many more. Will be a memorable one.

  • 5/5 Derek W. 3 years ago on Google
Huge exhibition, impressively documented and maintained. There's so much to see, I could spend days in there and barely get through the half of it. Great to have been able to visit 'socially distanced', and will definitely go back again and again (I live round the corner!) Great for families and retirees alike.

There are so many things to see and explore. It's easy to spend a whole day here. Feels like a combination of Natural history museum + V&A + British Museum + Science Museum. The animal specimen were so vivid and well staged. They look so alive in a natural setup(not a stiff preserved mummy) and you can learn a lot interesting facts. The architecture itself was amazing. If you have time, do try the mindfulness route.(there are guide flyers available in the hall)

Ticket is £20 per adult. Needs booking time slot, because of COVID restrictions. Very interesting place to visit. I spent there more than 2 hours and it still was not enough. The most important thing is, I found my nephiew's star and name on the globe, which is rareness!

Great museum. Engagingly presented in a beautiful space. Wonderful mix of Scottish history, technology, crafts, natural history... (Translated by Google) I like Art Nouveau and Art Deco style, so I stopped by on the way back from Georgian House. It took me a long time to go around the museum, which is bigger than I expected, but there were a lot of exhibits and it was a weekend, but there were few visitors and I was able to appreciate it slowly. Especially good was the furniture, which was well preserved and beautifully decorated. It is a highly recommended sightseeing spot when sightseeing in Edinburgh with a lot of rain. The inside is large and there is a security check, so I think it is better to wear light clothes. It was amazing before Covid, so many things to entertain young children. Still a fantastic place to visit. However, we foolishly had coffee at the cafe. £22 for 3 luke warm coffees and 3 of the driest muffins/cakes I've ever not eaten. Service was slow and we were never offered sugar. When I had to ask for sugar it eventually arrived without a spoon to stir it and the coffee was so cold it wouldn't have been possible for it to dissolve anyway. I'd recommend the museum itself but avoid the cafe.

A really magnificent museum with so many exhibitions spanning 4 storeys (or was it 5?) in particular the animal kingdom exhibitions were amazing, with so many real life models of animals on display, and lots of helpful information panels that gave interesting trivia about the animals, which were really helpful to people who otherwise would never see these animals in real life! A good way to spend an entire day here.

A wide range of things to see in a large area, build of 3 stores. I am not a museum fan, visiting only because I am curious. But I saw some interesting items, so for sure there is something interesting for any kind of visitor. I liked the parts with animals and Earth. Is worth it to visit, I recommend for children and adults too. The entry was free, but needs to be booked online, because of pandemic, they do not want the place to get overcrowded.

Such an amazing museum with an exhibition to strike everyone's interest! Fashion, space, technology, flora and fauna, climate change, etc. Etc. It is a huge museum with so much stuffs that it is impossible to see everything in a day. I would say it is a good place to bring your kids to as there are many exhibits geared towards children learning. Personally, what I love the most is the internal architecture of the museum and the planes section.

What a fantastic place to visit we mainly went to see the Galloway Hoard which was amazing but there is so much to see there you spend all day and only see a fraction of it. Will go back when we have more time. Also great for adults and children.

The national museum of science is free and a must see for the entire family. The animal biology exhibition is breathtaking and it displays a dinosaur that is amazing. There's also tigers and other animals you can see and experience. There's science and technology exhibitions ranging from energy, telecommunications, aviation and a also a Viking display. This place is great for kids and the entire family!

  • 5/5 John 2 years ago on Google
This was a brilliant experience. Firstly, it was free which was massively welcome. However, when we went in we were greeted with a fascinating insight into Scottish history, which is part of my heritage. This includes a look at priceless cultural artefacts. On display were items from an array of different periods, right from before the union until today. I had a great time here! The information videos were also excellent as well. Unfortunately a few of the interactive things have had to be shut down because of Covid, but it didn’t dampen the experience. I was also impressed by how enormous the museum is!

Do enjoy a stroll around the museum. Always something to see and do. The temporary exhibition this time was related to the invention and use in society of the typewriter. Informative and unusual. Also must take in just the scope and architecture of the building itself. Enjoy your visit. Then go again.

  • 4/5 Simon P. 2 years ago on Google
Free museum with an awful lot of exhibits. The early Scottish history galleries were excellent and it was good to see more recent exhibits such as Dolly the Sheep and on the Orbital Wave energy generator in Orkney. Only issue would be the layout of the museum is somewhat of a maze but at least it keeps on giving surprises as you find another interesting exhibit.

  • 5/5 Ben K. 2 years ago on Google
Incredible place. Old museum is great for kids, loads of interactive exibhits and mechanical things to look at. Then the Museum of Scottish history side is a whole different thing, with a really well put together chronology of the Scottish Nation. Incredible architecture to be seen across both wings too. 10/10

Great museum over many levels with a little something for everyone. My only gripe is the layout is a little all over the shop so it is easy to miss certain exhibits or keep circling back round to one you've already seen. The map certainly helped so I recommend picking one up. The staff are mega friendly and helpful and the Balcony Cafe is worth a visit after your sightseeing.

What an incredible place to spend an entire day at. So many amazing collections and interactive displays to see. My favorite was obviously the natural history museum, really brings out the scale of animals in a way video will never be able to. The lockers were really helpful and were reasonably priced. The toilets were clean, no complaints there. The coffee at the cafe was a little underwhelming and I would recommend getting your own lunch, there is ample space for you to sit and eat.

To be honest. The museum is not in my list of sightings. After this visit, I really want to visit them for future tours. Understanding that UK 🇬🇧 is one of country that explore the whole world, bring many cultural back to their own. To my surprises, many of the exhibits are legitimately obtained. You will definitely get wiser after the visit with many floors to explore. In fact, I saw many people in and out of the museum, young and old, local and foreigner. This is definitely a good way to learn the local history and others country thru the British eyes. Do prepare at least 2 hours to explore the museum fully. There is a souvenir shop at the ground level and a coffee corner.

  • 5/5 Daren K. 3 months ago on Google New
Absolutely amazing. We never thought this museum had oozing culture. One of the best we've been to. The only way I can explain it's authenticity is it's comparative to seeing the raised resting places of Columbus, Nelson and The Duke of Wellington. The National Museum of Scotland is on a par with Victoria Albert Museum. Around ever corner and every room there's a multitude of different exhibits. It's got a great atmosphere to soak up, and there's an activity room for the younger kids. We saw lots of teenagers from different ethnicities. It has that presence and it's just a remarkable place to be at that time. We were there for over three hours, and we hadn't taken it all in.

  • 5/5 Abi 3 months ago on Google New
Really enjoyed our time here so much to do. We loved the little interactive bits in every room for the adults to get involved with. The kids play rooms too we’re great! Favourite section was the animals and Egyptian. To say it’s free it’s definitely far better than some paying museums I have been too.
