The National Museum of the Bardo, is an archaeological museum that contains, among others, the richest collection of Roman mosaics in the world, all in perfect condition. It is the most important Tunisian museum and at the same time the oldest museum in the Arab world and in Africa. It was inaugurated on 7 May 1888. #Tunisia

Absolutely spectacular archeological site, one of my favorite one in Tunisia. This place is huge, well preserved and clean. Not crowded at. I think most tourists miss this place. It's totally worth the time and money. Even Rome could be jealous of this place.

Unforgettable. One of the best archeological sites ever seen - and I am Italian so I saw many. A true wonder in terms of landscape and ruins. Well kept too. I was there in August so it was very hot but absolutely feasible.

Don’t even hesitate - find a tour operator who will take you out here and book! This is a remarkable site with some of the best preserved Roman architecture in North Africa. It is really impressive and overwhelming - the forum, the baths or even the amphitheater- the site is extensive and amazing

Gorgeous 2nd century Roman ruins. They still use the amphitheater for events. The Roman ruins of Dougga, in modern-day Tunisia, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. The site includes temples, baths, a theater, and an amphitheater. The amphitheater is one of the most impressive structures at Dougga. It was built in the 2nd century AD and could seat up to 3,500 spectators. The amphitheater was used for gladiatorial contests, public executions and animal hunts. The amphitheater is in a good state of preservation and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Tunisia. Visitors can climb to the top of the amphitheater for stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Loved this! Its so well preserved and so big, you could almost imagine there once being a lively city. Many mosaics still in place. We were there in end of September very small amount of visitors. We spent here almost 2hour, but it could have been more.

The museum provides a lot of information on the water zones that characterize the Tunisian country through many types of fish and sea birds. Wow, tremendous location for ancient ruins. Basically a small ancient town that crumbled with time. Streets, houses, rooms, floors, doorways all visible among the clutter. Stadium is in great shape as are two other large, obvious buildings on the site. View of low hills, more ruins, is very nice as well. Not the parthenon in Athen but... pretty darn good. And much less crowded and costly (only 8TND pp). Columns and elevated stones are awesome. Spend 2-3 hrs walking around, even then you'll miss things. There are underground tunnels in the 'bath' area. There are many pieces of carved stone with "Caesar" on them, and other recognizable words (english, latin). Do not follow local signage. Follow google maps. Local signs take you through busy, slow town. Google, straight off P5 highway. Parking is very limited on top. Maybe 10 spots. Off season (December), nobody there. Not sure what they do in summer. WCs available at entrance. No cafe, no drinking water, no food; bring your own. Lunch too.

(Translated by Google) Despite its small size, the Roman city of Daqqa in northern Tunisia is one of the most well-preserved regions in North Africa. The size of the city, its well-preserved monuments, and its rich history, varied from Berber, Numidian, Guinean, Punic, ancient Roman and Byzantine histories, all of this made it an exceptional area. Therefore, UNESCO included it among the World Heritage Sites in 1997. The archaeological area precisely occupies about 65 hectares. And “Daqqa” or “Toga” is derived from an Berber term meaning rocky mountain. The most famous history of the city of Dakka begins with the Roman conquest, despite the discovery of many pre-Roman monuments, such as the creation of a mausoleum, a cemetery and temples, all of which constitute an indication of the importance of the site before the arrival of the Romans, but the most clear and specific history of the city is the Roman era. According to some historians, the fleeting name of the city was "tobacco", which is derived from an ancient Libyan word meaning protection, given that the city is on top of an easily defensible plateau. But historians who believe that the city was founded in the sixth century BC say that the name Dakka was "Tokai" in the ancient Greek language, and Diodorus of Sicily described it as a great and beautiful city. Daqqa was an important human settlement, and what indicates its urban character is the presence of a tomb with a rocky altar for offerings, which is the most ancient archaeological find in accuracy, and was dedicated to Baal Hammon, the god of fertility and crops in the religions of North Africa. There are also obelisks, architectural fragments, a mausoleum and a temple dedicated to Massencia, and many remains were found during archaeological excavations. UNESCO says that despite the lack of good knowledge of the city's history before the Roman era; The current discoveries at the site have revolutionized the perception that existed for this period.

The tragic terrorist attack and its memory may provide another sad apropos for the visit. Not a full day is enough to roam, but it does provide serious insight into invaluable finds not seen elsewhere. It is a bit static, but with most of the art treasures presented, nothing else is possible. Recommended destination. Egy teljes nap sem elég a bebarangoláshoz, viszont komoly betekintést nyújt máshol nem látható, felbecsülhetetlen értékű leletekbe. Kissé statikus, de a bemutatott műkincsek többségével más nem is lehetséges. Ajánlott célállomás.

Building is very nice, contents are very interesting... Nice to visit such museum and great to have one in Tunisia. It could be much more better if well entertained, improve conditions and perform contents... It gives impression of private collection with no enough resources to keep in good condition. And not a national museum! People can afford more expensive entry fees for better contents... Entry is actually almost for free...

Absolutely outstanding ruins of a Roman/Punic town. So well preserved that you can walk on the original paving stones into houses, baths, temples, the theatre and forums. For easy entrance enter from the north. Local guides are often looking for business in the parking lot, and can provide context to everything you see, for a fee.

Incredible ruined Roman city. Mosaics, statues, a temple, a brothel, a bath house, a theater... all incredible sights. There were only four tourists (myself included) in the whole place when I was there. I’d recommend taking a little walk around by yourself to marvel in solitude at the mystery of the place place for a bit, then grab a guide and take a look around. Be sure to negotiate the price in advance, because he will try to gouge you if you leave the price discussion to the end! There are restrooms and a little shop to buy cold water at the top. If you want to do something nice, spend a couple dinar to buy an extra big cold water for the guide. He won’t buy it for himself, but he will really appreciate it in the desert heat.

It’s amazing to think that actual romans used to live there hundreds of years ago. And it’s even more amazing that such ruins can be found in Africa . Not only in Africa but in a place that is far from the sea . Ancient romans were probably in love with the view of the fields that you can still enjoy to this day

Dougga is a phenomenal Roman city ruin about 90 mins drive from Tunis on a sprawling hillside site. The site is considered to be the best preserved by Roman city ruins in Africa and is a UNESCO site. The site itself was initially a Berber settlement stretching back to the 6th century BC. Unlike Carthage, it’s completely isolated with no urban encroachment.

(Translated by Google) One of the three ancient Roman cities of modern Tunisia, which are not badly preserved. This is perhaps the most atmospheric Dougga (Thugga or Dougga), the second city with not unique underground floors - Bulla Regia and the third - Sbeitla. There are other ancient Roman cities (Uthina and Thignica (Ain Tounga), Thuburbo Majus) and previous historical periods - Kerkouane. But the main temples are perhaps best preserved at Sbeitla. If you choose which city to visit, Dugga would be the best option, especially since excursions are taken there. But we were in a rented car and visited all these cities. More information on my channels in FB and VK, channel name: Sunny Day - Alexey Engels. (Original) Один из трёх древнеримских городов современного Туниса, которые не плохо сохранились. Oh my goodness I am humbled by the historic artefacts present in The National Bardo Museum. The numerous mosaics that decorate this large, multi floored space is a show piece of the Punic and Roman empires. Everything is presented beautifully, descriptions of artefacts and historic moments are presented in Arabic, French and English. Mosaics aside, The National Bardo Museum building is ornate, a masterpiece of Islamic artwork. Please be aware that the museum closes at 16:30, you’ll need at least 2 hours to respectfully absorb the presented material.

(Translated by Google) In 1888, the Bardo Palace was transformed into a museum. The museum has extensive historical and archaeological collections. The collection of mosaics - real masterpieces and uniques - arouses the greatest interest. There you will be honored that Tunisia is the custodian of priceless exhibits of world importance: Hellenic, Roman, Christian periods. The topics are also very diverse, both domestic and religious. And the mosaic with the poet Virgil is the pinnacle of this art. On three floors you will find unique ceramic collections, collections of Phoenician art, Egyptian art and what not ... At least 3 hours to make sense of both the halls of the palace and its collections. (Original) Двореца Бардо през 1888 г. се преобразува в музей. It is one of the most important museums in the Mediterranean basin and the second museum on the African continent after the Egyptian museum in Cairo due to the richness of its collections. It traces the history of Tunisia over several millennia and across several civilizations through a wide variety of archaeological pieces. Housed in a former beylical palace since 1888, it offers a prestigious and magnificent setting for the exhibition of many major works discovered since the beginnings of archaeological research in the country. Initially called the Alaoui museum, named after the reigning bey at the time, it took its current name of Bardo museum after the country's independence even if the name is attested before that date. The museum brings together one of the most beautiful and largest collections of Roman mosaics in the world thanks to excavations undertaken at the beginning of the 20th century on the various archaeological sites of the country, including Carthage, Hadrumète, Dougga and Utica. (Translated by Google) The Bardo National Museum is a jewel of Tunisian heritage. It is housed in a former Beylic palace dating from the 19th century. It traces, through its collections, a large part of the history of Tunisia (from prehistory to contemporary times) and contains the largest collection of mosaics in the world including the famous mosaic depicting Virgil, the poet. Visitors can discover an abundant collection of Punic jewelry as well as a gallery of Roman sarcophagi and Christian baptistery. One of the highlights of the visit is the cargo of a Roman ship wrecked off the coast of Cape Africa, facing the city of Mahdia, with its masterpieces of Greek Hellenistic art: bronze pieces , marble sculptures and furniture. It is the result of underwater excavations undertaken in the first part of the twentieth century with the participation of Commander Cousteau.

(Translated by Google) It was founded in 1924 under the name of Salammbô Oceanographic Station (SOS); a dependency of the oceanographic museum in Monaco. It became a full-fledged museum during Tunisia's independence in 1956. The name of SOS was changed to the National Scientific and Technical Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (INSTOP). This period was characterized by the creation of the annexes La Goulette and Sfax and the multiplication of research programs. In 1992, INSTOP was transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture to the Ministry of Research and Scientific Technology. Since then, the institute has been called the National Institute of Marine Science and Technology (INSTM). The National Aquaculture Center of Monastir was attached to it in 1996. Designed as an essentially educational space, the museum's collections are presented in eleven rooms that showcase the oceanographic beauty of Tunisia "a country of the sea", Tunisia and the Mediterranean, freshwater aquariums, lagoons from Tunisia, migrations of eels, islands and protected areas, coast, bird community, fishing techniques, fish and seawater aquariums. A truly fascinating location of an ancient Roman city left abandoned. Many buildings are still standing and our local tour guide was a wealth of knowledge explaining each building of note and their use. The location had little to no tourists and our visit was pre-pandemic. It was about 90 mins from Tunis and it was worth the trip through the countryside to see this historic location. I would recommend visiting this location.

Beautiful! There are two entrances with a parking in each. Entrance fee is affordable and they have discounts for local students, professors, and retired senior citizens. - There’s a bathroom inside. - Unfortunately, very little signage or arrows on where to go and what to see. So either use Google Maps or just walk around till you finish seeing everything. - The rocks and stairs can be slippery so wear something comfortable. - Not many places for food around other than one restaurant that’s a little pricey.

Beautiful site! Entry costs 8tnd, the site is quite big, we stayed about 2h. The view is beautiful, and the site is well preserved. There are bathrooms and a little shop. When we went there wasn’t many people so it almost felt we had the site for ourselves. It takes about 2h drive from Tunis. Recommended if you love history and archaeology!

The ruins are underrated. It may be a good idea to get a guide since it is not only roman ruins you can find on the sight. The city was part of the punic empire before too. The is larger than you might expect, though you can see it all in 1 hour if you are fast. The ruins are well preserved and excavations are still going on. The ruins are on the country side far away from the city. You can get there by taxi or car.

A must see! I called it a city of ruins. You walk in houses, baths, markets, temples. Stunning views...simply beautiful. I would advise to go by car. But otherwise, from Tunis, we went to Bab Saadun station, from there took a louage to Tabarsouk (around 8 TND per person). In Tabarsouk station. In that station we agreed with a man to drive and pick us from dougga ruins back to the station. (It is up the hill and with no transportation at that side). We paid only 20 TND for 2 persons both ways. In the station make sure to ask when is the last louage back to Tunis. For us it was at 15:00. So we had around 3 hours in dougga. Not enough... it has so many things to see... bring a guide book with you, water and snacks. There is a small cafe for nice tunisia tea... and a shop with guide books.

Our guide, who was funny and quirky, explained everything clearly and it is a good idea to hire a guide unless you like to explore on your own. Excellent toilet facilities and friendly staff. Apart from slightly pesky hawkers at the entrance, it was a memorable trip to the best museum in Tunisia.

Obviously one of the most important museums in the world for ancient history and art, thanks to its superb collections; sad to say, it is truly depressing to see how the place is currently run and maintained. The staff is at best uninterested and unhelpful, chattering away in the exhibition rooms as if this were a fast food joint, down to almost rude, in the museum shop, which looks rather like a banal souvenir outlet for tourists. The restaurant is ridiculously overpriced. The audioguide was not operative, we were told, without explanation. Upkeep was below every standard, with rooms unexpectedly closed and ancient statues lying about. The superb quality of the art and historical artifacts in this museum is, to sum up, in sharp contrast with the unworthy way in which it is presented and preserved.

Love the mosaics, the statues and the old palace. Hate how confusing it is to go around. Nothing is clear, the map doesn't help and the descriptions of each mosaic, statue or relic is not even close to enough. Not a big fan of the fact that you can "walk" on the mosaics either. It just seems all kind of wrong. All in all, I think more thought should be put into making it more accessible for people who are there to visit without a guide.

A special oceanographic museum.. The size of building hasn't a constraint to the collection showcasing knowing the diversity and the amount of collection :) It remains the air cooling of almost parts of museum, sanitary wasn't well kept too!! Price was extremely under the museum value (1 TND) !!!

It is interesting to see the skeleton of a big sea animal, a whale? You would have thought it was some mini dinosaur. One imagined whether the fish from which this skeleton came was caught in the Mediterranean area. It looks so big. The museum for oceanography as this site is otherwise called looked rather small but it houses some very interesting relics, like this skeleton, that a visitor will remember for a long time.

Dougga's history is best known from the time of the Roman conquest, even though numerous pre-Roman monuments, including a necropolis, a mausoleum, and several temples have been discovered during archaeological digs. These monuments are an indication of the site's importance before the arrival of the Romans

Very much worth a visit. Never have seen such a complete Roman city before. Gives you a very good idea of how they were living and how developed they were. Recommendable!

Tunisia has important and amazing Roman treasures, and Dougga is well worth a visit. So impressive! The archeological site was considered a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1997. It was a relatively big Roman city with a theatre for 3500 people, 21 temples, forum, triumphal arches, baths, a circus, the Capitol.... The site covers 65 hectares, so please reserve the whole morning to visit this amazing site in the middle of the countryside. Ticket is really cheap, and you can leave your car in an open space parking inside.

Amazing ruined Roman city well worth a visit. Easiest way to get there is to goto the town to the north east about 8k away on the bus. Hire a taxi and agree a time for them to come back. Get the bus out of town as by the time you come back the louages are sitting around waiting for people so the buses are a better option if you are heading to Tunis or El Kef.

I was blown away at how amazing this place is. Some of the best preserved Roman ruins I have ever been to. Get a guide to take you here as it is pretty far from Tunis, but well worth the drive.

  • 4/5 Seth G. 1 year ago on Google
This place is old and has fallen into disrepair. The temple doesn't even have a roof and there were stones strewn about.

  • 5/5 Neil Van D. 5 months ago on Google
Fascinating and well preserved Roman site. There are licensed guides there which I would HIGHLY recommend. Not expensive, very knowledgeable and the interpretive signage is minimal so will really add to your understanding of the area. We were a bit reluctant, but not the usual quasi scam types. Our guide lived in Dougga and his parents actually lived on the archeological site until the government moved residents out in 1963 to restore and preserve the area. A must-see in Tunisia (we found it much more interesting than Carthage).

In that area, you'll find a coffee shop with robust security, including police presence on quad bikes. It's advisable to rely on the street guide instead of Google Maps. With limited historical information available, it can be challenging to uncover the significance of this place and understand its historical context.
