Interesting trip through the museum, but the real attraction is walking through the amphitheatre, up to the top, and taking in the views. I would also recommend taking a left turn out of the exit, up the steps and heading right up to the very top of the hill (where the tall metal spikes can be seen). Had we not done so we would have missed out on some great sights and amazing views of the whole city! Worth also mentioning that we got our tickets from the boat travel ticket box on the front of the marina and found the prices very reasonable. I'm not sure if the price was different from buying at the museum, but it meant we did not have to queue to get in, which is worth it for that alone.

This place is well worth a visit. Cheap entry fee that you don't have to pre book. When we went it was very quiet so you can get great photos without crowds in them. The main building is cool with great AC so you can wander around and read the history in comfort. Outside however is a different story. It was 40c when we went and we couldn't stay too long as it was horrendously hot. I highly recommend a visit to this historic place if you are in the area.

Just amazing only discovered in 1990 after being built over . Go through the museum to enter, this also well worth it. Very quiet when we visited on a winter week day. Highly recommended. Mind you the whole city of Cartagena is wonderful. Lots to do and see. Great history.

Just an incredible attraction. Beautifully laid out with a museum before you head up through the old church to the theatre. Try visit in the evening when it's all lit up. Spectacular! The staff are always excellent and helpful which makes this the perfect place to visit. 👍

Wow.. who knew. This is a well done museum that is still adding to its story. The ampitheater is the highlight but the exhibits and details of the discovery are well presented. Wander through the exhibits and then go out into the ruins themselves.. let your imagination roam and place yourself amongst a theater crowd attending a comedy. Also keep in mind this facility could accommodate an audience of some 6,000 to 7,000 people!! Enjoy.

Well worth a visit if in the area. I took my 3 year old free entrance for him €5 for me. By the way I see people confused on entry point of Teatro, it’s right facing the Ayuntamiento building on the Main Street. There is levels to this place with various Artifacts on display all very interesting. Escalators take you up to the mid level of Teatro. Views are absolutely phenomenal, the place is immaculate and been kept very very well, you can almost feel the atmosphere from years gone by in here. Brilliant day enjoined every minute I will be back again.

The theatre is a superb example of roman architecture and has been sympathetically restored. The ticket office is not onsite but on the street where the town hall is located which is a little confusing. The structure itself is in the middle of the town and surrounded by homes which makes it very atmospheric. My husband and I climbed to the top tier which I don't recommend unless you like heights but gives a super panoramic view of the town. The staff are very friendly and informative as we discovered the site was buried under the town's former disco. Worth a visit if in the area.

(Translated by Google) An incredible place full of history, it is a must if you are from the area and do not know it yet, but even more so if you come from abroad. It is very worth it, the entrance is not too expensive. Also around there are bars, restaurants and shops to spend a good day. The only thing to improve a little would be the attitude of the workers, the more positive and cheerful the better. Let me see that LIKE !!

Nicely reconstructed old amphitheater. Note that you cannot get in to the theater without going through the museum. However you can walk on the walking street above and below to get quite nice views.

Great roman theater still being used to this day. Not very easy to find and get to because it's closed off with fences from three sides but once you get in and climb up the view is great. Head down the back side and you can take a stroll through the harbour and see all the beautiful boats.

I highly recommend a visit to the Roman Theatre in Cartagena. The theatre itself is very well preserved, there is an interior part when you can reading about the history of this place. The cost is around 6 euro for adults, but you can buy a familij or Group ticket and that is cheaper.

Having learned from experience how to get here on my previous visit this one was a breeze! We parked at the underground car park on Alfonoso XII street and crossed the road onto the Ordonez street, keeping the park and city walls on our right. Once you are in the paved urban area you can see the sign for the museum and theatre on your right hand side. Entrance was €6 I think and you work through the museum, slowly climbing until you exit into the theatre. The museum displays finds from the excavation as well as explaining how the theatre came to be buried and a history of the city. The theatre itself is quite large and it is easy to get a sense of scale despite the cathedral intruding onto one part of it. Unlike some it isn't preserved well enough to be used but it does show the importance of the city and the beauty and effort the Romans put into functional public buildings.

Only 5 euros each and 2ell worth a visit. There is an informative museum piece and a small complimentary guide. the amphitheatre is very well presented and restored. You also get access to the gardens above which lead up to a castle and museum with videos etc. the castle is 3.5 euros (April 2022)

This is an awesome example of a Roman theater! While we were there another visitor with an amazing voice sang a few notes. It resonated throughout the theater giving us a real life example of what it would be like to see an opera performance there. Just fantastic! Note that there are many stairs to climb to get to the arena from the port. There's also several inclines as well.

Incredible Roman amphitheatre. You can walk for free around the top but it is definitely worth the ticket to go inside. You go through the museum then two floors up into the amphitheatre. You can feel the history and get a sense of what a 7000 crowd must have felt like.

Nice small museum about the quite heavily restored Roman theater. Expect to spend 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how much you want to read. The entrance to the theatre and museum is on the main square, opposite the tourist information office. You can also see the theatre for free from above, if you climb the stairs on the back from the nearby street.

(Translated by Google) The amphitheater in Cartagena is believed to be the main attraction. It is really well preserved, there is a beautiful park above the amphitheater. The problem we faced was finding the entrance to the territory. The girl at the exit could not really explain to us exactly where to enter, and there were no signs. As a result, we could not get inside. Therefore, I had to be content with only top and side views. But even it was worth it.

Nice amphitheatre from Roman times in Cartagena. To get to it, you have to go through a small museum. There are a couple of nice paintings and some pieces of everyday objects and columns. The amphitheatre itself is nicely restaurated, you can walk to the stage and have a good look around. A fun thing to do.

A return visit to this epically beautiful place. This is part original and part restored and its obvious where restoration has taken place but its been done so well. The grandness of the place, the beauty and history is wonderful. The museum before you get to the actual theatre is so informative as you find out the various iterations of function of this place. We will come back again!

Purchase a city ticket online using GetYourGuide - made it easy to pick up tickets at counter. Not very expensive to visit but nicely laid out displays showing you a brief history of the theatre which we hadn’t realised was only discovered in the 1990’s. Quite amazing such a space was hidden underneath properties. Museum leads you underground through a few tunnels and eventually brings you out into the theatre which is an extraordinary piece of history. Worth the small ticket price for a look. You can also easily walk from the exit up to the castle if you have that ticket too.

It's Amazing to think that this was only rediscovered in 1988. Interesting history dating back over 2000 years. The parking is fairly simple. We parked along the seafront and walked around the block. Parking was around €2.50 which gave us ample parking for a stroll and some lunch. We didn't buy the tickets to go inside but you can see all of the outside of the amphitheatre from outside of the fences. We walked up to the viewpoint at the top of the hill next to the castle where you can see right across the town and the bay area. Well worth a visit.

This landmark Roman Theater is a must do while in Cartagena. The only way to actually go in the theater, is to pay at the entrance to the Roman Theater Museum. You can walk down some of the original steps down to the stage area. You can see the actual seats. It's an amazing landmark you should see. We went on a tour of the city through Princess Cruises. You may be able to see this from the Torres Castle way up on the hill but it's nothing like being right in the theater.

  • 5/5 Michael G. 1 year ago on Google
This is a must visit site in Cartegena. The museum is fabulous. Get the $2.50 Euro audio tour that automatically narrates depending on where you are inside. You can get a deal if you pay for the museum, Roman theatre and the lift to the castle. Seniors get a small price break too. Just be aware that it is a fault long walk and a climb to the castle even with the lift.

We had not long arrived and discovered the museum that led us on to this amazing place. Its hard to imagine how this was discovered under all of the buildings and preserved so well. Definitely worth a visit. Amazing history. The entrance is just a few euros so avoid the extortionate 'tours' offered by some people.

A great place to visit, highly recommended. They have carried out enough restoration to show you how it would have been, even incorporating some of the original stone into the newer pieces. Fantastic

Stunning restored amphitheater with additional info on other finds and the surrounding dig area. Beware it can get crowded due to large group tours. You can peer over the edge for free at the street above, but access is not expensive and worth seeing up close if you’re interested.

The museum is well set out and surprisingly spacious after entering the Tardis like small entrance. Spread over various floors but with escalators it easy to navigate. Some good exhibits highlight the importance of Cartagena as a port in Roman times. The teatro Romano itself is well worth seeing for it's overall effect. Of course it has been heavily restored after having been built on for generations. It is not always easy to see what is original and what isn't, although there are some maps that try to help. But well worth a visit.

Arrived too early to enter but could get a good look from the outside, imagine it would be very interesting to be shown around. Very much a sun trap... very hot.
