A superb museum. This is a collection that ranges all the way through a really long period of time, inclusive of medieval art, the Renaissance, and through to modern art. It also tells the story very well. It was a pleasure to walk these galleries and see some genuine masterpieces in the collection. Facilities are great. Good toilets, good outdoor café, and interesting temporary exhibitions too that compliment the permanent collection. Cannot recommend enough and out of the ‘Big 3’ museums in Madrid, this is only second behind the Reina Sofia and a significantly better experience than the Prado.

MY FAVOURITE MUSEUM IN MADRID! I know the Prado and the Sofia-Reina are probably bigger and more famous, but this is the one I'd pay to see again. The pieces are fabulous and some of them are recognizable. I particularly love the portrait of Millicent, Duchess of Sutherland by John Sergeant. Very mesmerizing. The museum itself isn't too big and it's easy to navigate around. The staff are great and they don't prohibit photography and videography. Overall, it's the most pleasant museum in Madrid to visit. Make this your #1 stop.

The museum has an impressive collection of European art that spans centuries. You get medieval religious artwork, Renaissance artists, baroque painters, and even Impressionism and modern art. Art from all over Europe in this museum stems from Italian Renaissance painters, Dutch golden age artwork, Flemish artists, to famous Spanish artists. There really is a wide range to see here. Best of all, photos are allowed!

An unforgettable experience. The building is precious, right at the center of Madrid in a sunny day you can enjoy every corner of this place. The history and the art that hangs in the walls are priceless. The beauty of every painting is complemented with a great space, amazing stuff and soft lighting that will transport you straight to America in the 80’s or a canal in Venice, or maybe a garden where Monet will ensure you never want to leave. This is the best museum I have ever been, not only for the art but for how comfortable and easy is to move around. I paid £18 with £5 towards the audioguide. Worth every penny.

The Museum is for the most part a collection of old world classical European paintings. Not my cup of tea. A total bore. I prefer the Reina Sofia Museum with a wider array of older and modern painting exhibitions and artistic presentations. That being said, the Alex Katz modern art temporary exhibition was absolutely superb. I’d recommend visiting the museum only for this reason alone.

This museum is unbelievable. Be sure not to miss it! Once you’re finished with the heavy duty religious paintings in the Prado, this museum and its amazing collection will fill your heart with happiness and joy! There is a good selection of impressionists’ works, many of which I hadn’t seen in the USA before, but were clearly were a part of this movement. Beyond that, the modern works were equally as impressive. Loved this museum.

This place is heaven for art lovers. Many paintings from both the Renaissance and Impressionist, including quite a few Monet and Van Gough that we had not seen before. You can get in for free on a Monday, however the queue was several hundred meters long. We took one look at the line and opted for the next (paid) day. A great decision! Far less crowded, much more time to spend there. Here, unlike the Prado, you can take photos. There is also a seniors discount costing 9 euro instead of the normal 15 euros. There is also a large display of modern art which, honestly, we just don't get. Give me the classics anyway. So, something for everyone...a must see for art lovers.

Yes yes yes! Gah! I love art... Better yet, I live seeing art that I have only ever seen in books or online or in lectures. To see them up close and in person is just incredible!

Simply an outstanding world class modern art museum with a wide variety of artwork on display. Many have concentrated on the museum content so I will concentrate on the museum. The staff and set up of this museum is highly commendable. There is a standard €13 entrance fee with audio a further €5. Any exhibitions are extra. There are x ray security checks for bags and lockers for them once you get in but you can take photos which is great. You can even download a map of the museum with a scanner. There is a cafe and shop on site. I went first thing on a Saturday morning and the line was a 100m but it only took me ten minutes to get in. Super quick! Very impressed all round and of course the artwork is immense. After visits to the Prado, Sofía and now the Thyssen my head is fried full with beautiful images! Well done Spain…you are simply superb!

This is a wonderful museum in a very easy to access place for anyone who has just visited The Prado museum. The tickets to the permanent collection are more than enough and you don't have to get the extra tickets to the temporary exhibits to get value for your money. There is no map of the place and the website is very sparse, so you will have to rely on your own navigational skills to make sure that you see all of the art in the museum. And believe me that the art, much of it by well-known and regarded masters, is worth seeing.

My favorite visit of all Madrid was this museum. A highly curated exhibition with the most amazing modern and contemporary artists and way les crowded than the Prado Museum. If you go to Madrid, this museum is a must.

What a beautiful museum. After being at El Prado (which is also very impressive) the Thyssen museum had some of the most beautiful pieces of art that I had seen. Mainly olio paintings. I liked the variety and the fact that they were not all religious themed. Wonderful, really.

Great museum with well known artists' exhibitions. The museum is big and can take a whole day to visit. It has very good and clean bathrooms and is very accessible for all people as it has elevators everywhere. On Mondays the museum is free for all from 12pm-4pm.

Amazing private collection of art, almost 800 pieces! Also currently the only major art museum in Madrid that has free hours for more than 2 hours: 12-4pm on Sundays (line was 15 minutes). Great collection of ancient and medieval Christian art, Dutch masters, Spanish painters - and 20th century European and American art movements, including some very contemporary pieces. You could spend all day in here - but it's not overwhelming or overcrowded like the Prado or Reina Sofia. Don't miss it!

Very interesting, what a refreshing change to see lots of modern as well as historic art from the Masters and a limited number of religious paintings. You could lose yourself here for 2 hours easily. There is a free cloakroom where they ask you to leave large bags. Toilets on every floor and a lift or lots of steps. A small gift shop which has nice if expensive products.

I really advise to visit this museum when you are in Madrid. The collection is stunning and diverse. There are also some paintings of impressionists - so you cannot miss it! We bought tickets online beforehand but there was no queue when we came.

We had a wonderful time here. They have a huge permanent collection. Plus we enjoyed seeing 2 of the temporary exhibits. The Ukrainian show was quite impressive. By chance, we went on one of the free days, the line was incredibly long, but moved incredibly fast and we had no problem getting in. The staff was very nice. Well worth the visit

One of the best art museums I've ever visited. Such a wide variety of paintings from eras, countries, artists. Amazing temporary exhibitions too. Highly recommended - much better than the Prado and Reina Sofia museums!

I was there on a Monday when they have free entry, a wonderful place, one of the warmest and most welcoming places in Madrid. although I spent 3 hours there, I'm sorry I couldn't stay longer because it closed, but I'll definitely come back. you are allowed to take pictures, I mention it because you are not allowed in all places. the map is downloaded on the phone. they have some works from some representative artists of the periods in the history of art, but wonderful works! a wonderful place, I recommend it

An incredible museum with works ranging over hundreds of years. While it is open for free on Monday the special exhibits are not available during this free entry time. I found it worth the cost to be able to go to the special exhibit also. In May 2023, when I went, the special exhibit was Lucian Freud. The permanent collection is extensive and contains several excellent works from Spain and around the world.

Really great museum, the permanent collection is already so good! A good selection of the best and most interesting artworks of the modern age. But I highly, highly recommend the Magritte exhibition that is currently running until Jan 2022. This was by far the best selection of Magritte I have ever seen.

One of the best museums in Madrid, would definitely recommend. It has a variety of art spanning from the 13th to the 21st century. It’s a great mix of styles and techniques, so you’ll find something that you like for sure. I would advise to start the visit from the third floor, as intended.

Great museum! Huge collection of painting by historical artists such as Picasso and Van Gogh. You will need about 2 hrs to visit all sections, the gift shop by the entrance has excellent artistic items such as painting, cups, cloths, books.. and many other options.

The countess' collection is spectacular, so many beautiful paintings! The other collection would be good too, but most people saw it in opposite chronological order, which was really confusing. They should not let you go upstairs from where we were pointed to. We walked back once we were finished just to try and put everything in order. I enjoyed the lighting and the positions of the paintings.

  • 5/5 Arturo C. 2 years ago on Google
Although this museum is not full of masterpieces, it presents its collection in chronological order. From the 1400s to 1960. Observing the evolution of painting is a great learning (and fun) experience. Start at the 2nd floor (3rd in the USA) and work your way down.

  • 5/5 Gonzalo C. 4 months ago on Google
Great museum with amazing art from the middle ages to modern art. Although I am not a fan of contemporary art, there were many oeuvres of that period that I liked, on top of that, the classics are just wonderful. Definitely a must!

  • 5/5 Paulina G. 6 months ago on Google
An impressive collection of the mankind's top painters with some of their most known works. Focus is not only on European but also on the American art of the XIX and XX centuries. Absolutely stunning!

  • 5/5 Sean O. 11 months ago on Google
For any lover of art from 1850 to the present day, this is an incredible private collection of art. They also have a good collection of Renaissance art as well. We spent almost 3 hours here and it was only tiredness that stopped us staying longer. Get there early, we were there at 10.30 on Easter Sunday and it was quiet. It was a lot busier when we left and the Prado was really busy. I'd recommend buying the 3 gallery pass that does the 2 previously mentioned and the Reine Sofia. Highlights were the Rothko, the Singer Sergeant, the Liechtenstein, Richard Estas, O'Keefe, Opie. The list goes on. Seriously one of the best galleries in the world.

  • 5/5 Lina T. 11 months ago on Google
One of the best museums in Madrid! Great permanent collection and very interesting temporary exhibitions. For 13€ general admission you can see four temporary exhibitions and the permanent collection! The Carmen Thyssen collection is considered one of the greatest private collections in the world.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An enthralling journey through art history awaits at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. The diverse and meticulously curated collections took us from the early Italian masters right through to pop art, offering a fascinating glimpse into various epochs and artistic movements. A must-visit for art lovers and anyone keen to immerse themselves in a rich tapestry of artworks, each telling its unique story. An absolute gem in the heart of Madrid! M

Make sure to allow the day in order to attend this museum. New collections appear in corridors, making you lost in art and history. Absolutely a must visit if you find yourself in Madrid!

This museum is great. It's large and well laid out. It feels like great value. We spent a good couple of hours there, and there was still a lot to see. The temporary exhibition on the occult was perhaps one of my favourite ever. It had a huge variety of very well renowned artists. The themes were well explored, and it was brilliantly laid out.

  • 4/5 Justa G. 7 months ago on Google
Some beautiful artwork in the collection here. Very large spacious interior. There was also a special exhibition regarding the Occult, which was a nice change to follow a theme through various artists.

Wonderful museum and so much to see. Very spacious. Quite a lot of people in late February but not overly crowded. Many famous artist’s paintings in one place. Restroom and cafe. A little tricky to follow the rooms with the audio guide as there were 2 collections in separate areas plus the full time collection (in which I walked through in reverse order, oh well!) Buy ticket online and hopefully scoot right through as I did! Don’t take food, drinks, large handbag or backpack. Photos are allowed unlike at the Prado.

  • 5/5 Ally J. 8 months ago on Google
Beautiful museum. The staff were nice and there was no line to buy tickets or enter. The audio guide wasn’t as good as audio guides at other museums, but it was only €5.

  • 5/5 Sonja . 2 years ago on Google
One of the highlights in Madrid. Beautifully curated collection of modern and classic art. I suggest to go from the top floor and then down. I did it opposite and was a bit confused to go back in time. Definitely recommend if you like Dutch masters and contemporary artists like Kandinsky and Mondrian.

  • 5/5 Omer S. 2 years ago on Google
Beautiful drawings! As a person who is "not that much into art" I had a lot of fun and was very impressed. From what I read, they have the second biggest private collection in the world, with more than 1600 paintings/drawings. I saw different (styles?) of painting and it was beautiful. Take in account that the museum is big, and that for some of the paintings there is an explanation, so I recommend to go with headphones.

  • 5/5 Chica rusa en E. 2 years ago on Google
I recommend to everyone who loves art to visit this place. I was on Monday when the museum is always free from 12 to 16, 1 hour would be enough if you walk through and look quickly or not everything. It has pictures of different styles, countries and centyries, I enjoyed more landscapes and city scenes, but there were also some curious portraits. Religious thematic was immens too. Definitely everyone finds something interesting for him.

  • 5/5 darius s. 2 years ago on Google

I went to Museo Del Prado about 4years ago I'm not good at Painting so I just went there because it's the most famous museum in Madrid. And I tried this museum when I visited to Spain again. Actually,It's much better than I expected They have a lot of Painting, some treasures and a few sculptures but the museum isn't huge so I was able to enjoy the paintings comfortably(I meant I didn't walk a lot) I recommend you should check this museum as well as visiting Prado

A must visit!! The museum is wonderful, they have a permanent collection and they also highlight different artists depending on the season. The paintings are breathtaking and its a great experience to have when in town. In the end, the shop has wonderful jewelry pieces based on the works presented in the museum and the Café is a great place to relax after walking around.

2021-10-11, national holiday weekend. I arrived at 14:00 for free entry on Mondays. The queue looked long but it only took 15 minutes. When I left at 16:00, there was no queue. So it may be best to come later in the afternoon. Inside the museum was crowded but not terrible.

Im not really a fan of Museums but i must say that this one is really nice and in my humble opinion, it has hundreds or maybe thousands of diverse art pieces so you won't get bored easily . The staff is always alert and helpful, they do speak english. If you love art and paintings, you definitely need to visit this Museum.

A great Museum. I was in a hurry so could only spend 2 hours there. It's worth at least half a day. So many brilliant artists from 1300 onward. The Magritte exhibition was a bit crowded, but fabulous.

The Museum must be visited. The collection is rich and interesting for lovers of art. There is audioguide on the right to the entrance. The only one of the popular museums in Madrid where it's allowed to photo. It's possible to visit free of charge on Monday after 12.00 and every day after 18.00. The museum has a big souvenir's store with exclusive gifts. The cafe has the menu of the day and menu with specialities.

I had a guide (through Viator) and we ended up having a private tour. He was phenomenal: great overview, fantastic grasp of detail. I wish we'd had more time. The collection is diverse, in contrast to El Prado or the Reina Sofia where the focus is primarily Spanish. It's a great collection. This was my first time here, and I was sorry I hadn’t come sooner. The Picasso/Chanel exhibit was outstanding!

  • 5/5 Lorenzo N. 1 year ago on Google
If you seek to be punched by beauty come here. The Museum's curators have put together a top notch, impressive collection of masterpieces from European and American artists spanning 7 centuries. The most impressive thing about the museum is the consistent quality of paintings from different epoques, it's like an MVP of art history. If an alien comes visit tomorrow I'd bring it here to explain art evolution in the last 700 years

  • 5/5 Andre F. 10 months ago on Google
Really extensive private and public collection. Great spaces for art display. Great lighting. True masterpieces on display covering a wide spectrum of art styles. The layout of the museum is great and does not feel too overwhelming. The queues can be quite long if you don't arrive before your timeslot however the entrance process is very effective.
