Chhatim Tala... a peaceful place.. The place was decorated with marigolds.. though the original Chhatim tree no longer exists but the legacy continues and the place is now a heritage... We took rounds of the site and it felt ecstatic.. Much recommended...

Hasn't re-opened for visitors post covid. I'm sure it's the amazing place with the most amazing vibe but we could only witness it from quite afar. Hope it opens soon, the place should be cherished.

Very calm and serene place in bolpur viswa varati. A historical place related to our beloved kobiguru Rabindranath Tagore. A bit disappointed to see that this historical landmark is now closed for tourists from COVID. It will be much more happier if it opens up for all the tourists to feel the serenity by visiting.

Chhatimtala was the first place to be established in Santiniketan.Maharshi Devendranath Tagore planted many Chhatim trees here . There are still many Chhatim trees here . It is called that, the Asthis of Rabindranath Tagore and Devendranath Tagore are still stored in this place. Devendranath Tagore always used Chhatim leaves for any good occasions. So, still now Chhatim leaves are used for every good occasions in Santiniketan. All the qualified and PhD certifieds are felicitated with Chhatim leaves in these days also . It is a nostalgia of Santiniketan .

Known as the site of genesis of Santiniketan, this historically significant site is a visual delight to everyone. The Holy Chatim tree, known as Devil’s tree is interestingly attached with divinity and serenity of utmost kind. Maharishi Debendranath Tagore meditated under a glade of Chatimtrees, the only trace of vegetation found in the arid lands of Birbhum. The spiritual realisation that Maharshi had while meditating in 'Chhatimtala' symbolizes the starting point of Santiniketan. This place is considered to be a hallowed spot and prayer services are held on special occasions and days.

It reminds me about the very beginning of the Vishwabharati when it was started by Rabindranath Tagore with 3 fellow students. Place is quiet and well decorated. Boundary is all around it. You have to see it from distant site.

This is a place where Tagore meditated. Located exactly opposite the Shantiniketan Museum. Although it is not open to go inside. You have to see from outside.

Shantiniketan has basically two part to visit . One is museum area , another is educational area . In educational area Chhatim tala may be the heart . A peacefull place . Named over a tree called Chhatim . Rabindranath Tagore like to use this place most of the time in his period . Now this place used to the venue of the samabartan ceremony .

This Place holds the very essence of our university ..and symbolize the worship of Bramha Upasana ...which was initiated by Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, Father of Gurudev Ravindranath Tagore .. The legacy is still being carried by thousands of students, staffs of our VISVA-BHARATI.. concurrently the chatim leaves (saptaparni) were also given to the students after completion of their degree starting from 12th graduation, post graduation and PhD during convocation... the tradition was started at the time of Gurudev..This tradition has been cumulative behind naming the Chatim tree ... which is Alstonia scholaris.. Scholaris as a species name for its importance towards students achievement. This place has its own aura and spirit... you can feel it while standing here .. Ye apni Apbeeti khud hi Bayan karti hai ... You can visit here anytime....however I would suggest to visit during 23rd to 25th December because the Upasana of Nirguna Bramha held here during those day and with that the Pous Mela initiated ..

Calm and peaceful. Take a Toto Rikshaw to travel around Shantiniketan, they are the best guides. We gave 1000/- rupees to a Toto driver and he took us to many places including Birbhum Mandir, raja bari, a museum, etc.

Look, quite honest review alert! Being a place woven with the memories of Rabindranath Thakur, this place has a special place in each and every Bengali's heart. Well, before the covid pandemic, visitors were allowed inside the garden, to watch and being amazed by the serenity of the place. But, after the pandemic, entry has been debarred, simultaneously the administration of the place has run down. Maintenance has been reduced, which is visible from the parasitic plants growing here and there. As a result of these, visitors are not at all happy. What is the meaning of visiting the place of our beloved Rabi Thakur if you can't enter the premises? These all has cultivated in lesser number of visitors, and personally, I have heard people say they might not come here until the rules are mended.

A historical place. This is where the idea of Shantiniketan was founded by Maharshi Debendranath Tagore. Initially there was a vast field out there. History says, Debendranath was passing by the field on a scorching hot summer noon once, on his way to his friend, the zamindar of Bhubandanga, and here, under this chhatim tree he sat to take rest for a while. During this time he got spellbound by the serenity of the place and decided to buy the land so that he could build his own resting place there. But the zamindar of Bhubandanga, friend of Maharshi, did not sale it to his friend; rather he gifted it to him in exchange of one rupee honorary price money. Later on Debendranath and then Rabindranath himself built this place bit by bit to today's Shantiniketan and earned international recognition and fame for the place. The place is well-preserved inside the campus of Visva Bharati University.

Chatim Tala, Santiniketan CATEGORIES:ARCHITECTUREARTNATUREHISTORY Teleport within Bardhaman  Attractions near Chatim Tala, Santiniketan Attractions similar to Chatim Tala, Santiniketan < BACK TO PLACES TO VISIT IN BARDHAMAN Chatim Tala is a historical meditation site located in the town Santiniketan of Birbhum district, West Bengal. It is situated near Bolpur division in the Visva Bharati University Campus, Santiniketan - at 59 kms from the city of Bardhaman. The nearest bus stand and railway station is that of Bolpur located at the distance of 3. 3 km and 5. 3 km respectively. Chatim Tala means a place under Chhatim tree, which was used for meditation purposes and for promoting education by the well known Tagore family. This place was established in the year 1863 by Maharishi Debendranath Tagore, who was the father of renowned poet Rabindranath Tagore. Under this tree, Tagore used to meditate and is said to have acquired inner peace. Later on, in the year 1901, Rabindranath Tagore used this very place for outdoor study to educate some students and started his institution to promote art and culture by the name "Bharmacharya Ashram", which later became the Visva Bharati University. Chatim Tala is still used to provide education in open air as Rabindranath Tagore used to a century ago. It is a perfect setting for study amidst the natural as well as peaceful surroundings. There is also a meditation centre or prayer hall here known as "Upasana Griha", where people can meditate in order to attain inner peace. Various festivals are also celebrated here such as Basanta Utsav, Pous Utsav, Naba Barsa, Rabindra Paksha, and many more. The students who graduate from this university get honored with a branch of Saptaparni tree that is situated in Chatim tala. Visitors can ideally spend an hour or two amidst the peaceful surroundings of this place. Visitors can visit this place during the spring season as many flowers and trees surround this place, which looks beautiful during that season. This heritage place is open on all days of the week and for 24 hours a day. Although, the public entry is restricted by the institution in order to protect the structure and maintain the natural environment. You can surely see the place from some distance at a gate or on several special occasions.

Chatim Tala is a heritage complex in Shantiniketan. This is the place where Maharshi Debendranath Tagore rested for a while under Chhatim trees and he got his "comfort of soul, joy of mind and peace of soul" while he was coming to the zamindar house in Raipur to attend the invitation. The original Chhatim trees no longer exist but the legacy continues and the place is now a heritage. Lush greenery, calm and quiet place, perfect place for meditation.
