My interest in touring the USS Slater was that my Dad served on a Destroyer Escort during WWII. The tour turned out to be a much better experience than I anticipated. My main goal was to gain some idea of what it was like for my father to have lived on board a "Tin Can". I was able to achieve that goal and more. Fred was our guide and he did a GREAT job. It's really nice to meet someone who loves what they do. I would recommend touring the USS Slater to anyone who has an interest in WWII warships.

Toured the USS Slater with my family on Saturday. Our tour guide Austin, was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable, made the tour enjoyable and fun. You could tell he really enjoyed his job. My family and I learned so much and have now fallen in love with the Slater. Can't wait to go back!

Highly recommended! The ship is carefully restored by the VOLUNTEERS (that was the most impressive fact for me). Admission is with guided tour only. And let me say, you are lucky if your guide is Fred. He is very knowledgeable and has a great sense of humour! 👍

Very informative tour by a very knowledgeable tour guide who is a retired Warrant officer. Lots of history about this ship and its class that served during WW2. The ship is being restored to it's original condition with a lot of interesting features that bring you back to that time, including playing music over the 1MC from the 40s. Highly recommend.

Nice people. Our tour guide made it super fun for everyone. Next time we are in the area we plan on going again to do the longer tour where you see more of the ship.

I did this tour this past weekend and it was totally awesome! Our tour guide Art was very knowledgeable, friendly and engaging. He really knows how to keep an audience (especially kids) captivated by the history of this great battleship. You can clearly see that this ship is very well maintained and loved. The price for general admission is only $10 for adults and $8 for children, which doesn't include the tour of the engine room. Tickets along with some really nifty souvenirs can be purchased in the gift shop. Since some of the tour is going up and down in small spaces, those that are a certain height (above 6 ft might be a bit uncomfortable). Overall, this museum is a definite must see for all ages!

If you fancy yourself a history buff you must visit this wonderfully restored relic from a harder time. It's hard to imagine what these sailors had to endure, but it's slightly easier when you can put your hands on the same bulkheads and see their sleeping quarters and eating quarters and fighting stations. All that's missing is the smells and the rocking of the open sea. Easy parking right beside the ship. Nice little gift shop. But the tour guides are what add another level of enjoyment.

Excellent guided tour, very passionate tour guide really put the mission of these WWII vessels in perspective. Teenage kids actually said they enjoyed it too - that doesn’t happen too often…

Pretty cool piece of history! The tour was about an hour and 15 minutes. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. It was right off the highway and easy to access for most ages. 100% recommend the Slater!

When we first got into the store to check in, the staff was extremely kind and helpful. Our guide, Charles, was amazing and made the tour even more enjoyable. This whole experience was really once in a lifetime because you get to hear stories of WW2 and the history of the ship you are standing on. It is truly an honor to be there and be able to touch/interact with some of the objects used in WW2. The tours are inexpensive and highly educational. You get to see what the soldiers really went through. All in all, just book a tour, it's worth it!

It is incredible to think that when the volunteers received this ship from the Greek Navy in 1993, the ship was basically a rusted hull of a wreck and those guys were able to rejuvenate it to its 1945 look. I cannot imagine how much work and how much effort it took to locate spare parts and then restore the ship into top shape. I was told this was the only DE destroyer left. Very knowledgeable tour guide and very nice ship with a lot of historical artifacts.

The USS Slater is one of the most interesting museums in upstate New York . The USS Slater is the last of all 563 destroyer escort ships from WW2. It is moored in the Hudson River in the Port of Albany. The ship is 306 feet long and weighs over 1,200lbs. The ship last saw service for the Greek Navy in 1991. A countless number of volunteer hours went into restoring the ship, and today most of the people who give and help maintain the ship are also volunteers. A video at the beginning of the tour goes over the historic legacy of the ship. The tour showcases the kitchen, sleeping quarters, engine room, ship's weapons, and officer’s quarters. The shower facilities and 60 second shower are a memorable part of the tour. The living conditions for the sailors on the ship must have been difficult. It is amazing to think they lived on this ship during the midst of WW2. You are allowed to not only see, but touch a few of these historic places on the tour. At the end of the tour there is a nice gift shop with reasonably priced items. Downtown, Albany is located right nearby. A must see for anyone who loves history. Thank you to all the volunteers who put so much time into making this a great place to visit!

Never been however, I pass by many times. Not sure if we have to pay to see the battleship or making a reservation eather. If so, no way Jose. It is just me. It's not my thing. However, if war memorabilia means something for you, come and check it out. It is never crowded. Although, there isn't parking spaces in the attraction, there are plenty of parkings close by, you only have to walk a little to get there. The area is safe and as I told you before not too crowded. There are other attractions around to check them out as well. The Dutch Apple Cruising, The Jennings Landing, Corning Preserve. Also, The Albany Rowing Center, which offer rowing classes during Summer time. Also, the new Skyway. All this facilities are located at the bike trail along the Hudson River Waterfront. You can't miss it. A short walking distance from one attraction to another. All this facilities are family oriented. So, there is something to see for everyone. Living your problems, angers and bad antisocial attitudes will be a plus. Relax and enjoy yourself.

Went this summer. An amazing visit. The volunteers are doing tremendous work keeping her seaworthy and looking as original as possible. The displays and components are the best I've seen. My friend and I went to 20 separate musuem ships and Slater rated number 1 on our favorites. The guide was very friendly and informative. Wish I remembered his name. Just visit. You won't be disappointed.

Wasn't expecting the stem to stern tour to be what it was. This tour made me appreciate what our veterans had to endure during war and their life style on board. Literally exploring the USS Slater from top to bottom and purchased the engine room tour. This was an amazing experience and highly recommended to be on one's bucket list.

Fred gave an excellent tour this morning. He gave me and other people a chance to hold some old weapons. And I later saw a dummy named Oliver in a restroom. I thought it was funny! Anyway, tickets for one adult cost $10.00 each. 😄

I paid a visit to the USS Slater while on a layover in Albany and Chris gave me a wonderful tour. The Slater was a Destroyer Escort built toward the end of WWII which saw action in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. After the war, she served for 40 years with the Hellenic Navy. The Greeks used her as a training ship before the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association negotiated her return and they've spent the last 25 years restoring the ship to be authentic to the WWII Era, and let me tell you - they've done an amazing job. Highlights included a working radio room with cipher machine, fully restored engine room, and an entire berthing compartment that has been converted to a museum and has artifacts from survivors and family members of those who served on DEs. The Slater is the only remaining DE afloat out of 563 deployed during the war. If you find yourself in Albany, I highly recommend stopping by for a tour!

The USS Slater stem to stern tour was absolutely fantastic! Our tour guide, Victor, was extremely knowledgeable and animated, and made the experience all the more enjoyable! The Slater has been painstakingly restored to it's original condition and outfitted to show how the sailors lived while aboard. It's an incredible glimpse into the past and a fantastic learning experience. 10/10 - highly recommend and would definitely do again!!

Absolutely an incredible experience. Alan was our tour guide, not only was he EXTREMELY knowledgable, but he was entertaining, witty and relatable. His own father served on one of these boats, and he really has a way of making you feel connected with the young men who fought on them. HIGHLY recommend doing this tour and seeing this last standing piece of history. We will DEFINITELY be back.

Enjoyed walking around this wonderful ship with my tour guide. My guide was very knowledgeable of this beautiful piece American history, and being a former Navy Reservist made it all the more meaningful. I would highly to anyone who is considering touring this ship to be a part of the 5% that that take the "Stem to Stern" tour, as well, the 1% to visit the "Flying Bridge".

We took my son and his friends here today. Our tour guide, Austin, was very informative and friendly. We bought the 2 year family membership and will be heading back soon.

Highly highly recommended. The guide was very knowledgeable and informative; really gave you a good feel for what life could have been like when the ship was active. Also it's the last ship of it's kind; and unlike other boat museum ships you can actually sit on and move the ships guns around.

Interesting tour of the USS slator. Tour didn't take long, the officers room with the radar was the coolest. My son liked the Ammo. Overnights are available too.

Austin was our tour guide of the USS Slater. His knowledge of the USS Slater's and destroyer escorts during WWII is impressive. He made this tour a fun and a good learning experience. He handled all of our questions with an indepth knowledge of someone passionate about his job. Once he found out that I am a retired US Navy Chief, he included the Goat's locker in the tour - what a score as the smell of coffee greeted us when we stepped into the Mess. Austin also included a visit in the radio room when he found out about my retired USMC husband's morse code interceptor background. All in all a very enjoyable afternoon

Great little ship that played a big role in WW2. The group that owns and runs the ship museum has done a fantastic job restoring and maintaining the ship. Wished I could have stayed onboard longer and explored the ship without having to be part of a tour. Otherwise, I fantastic place to visit.

An informative tour that continued to entertain. It was great to be able to explore the entire ship and learn more about it's history. We had some young children in our tour group and they were just as fascinated with everything as the adults in the group. I do want to mention that it's not the most handicap accessible, which is to be expected on a ship. I went with someone with bad knees and she wasn't able to go below deck because of how steep the stairs were. It's nothing that can be helped but I did want to point that out for people who may be looking to take someone who doesn't handle stairs well.
