Visited here a couple of weeks ago whilst working in the area. Ordered via the app which made things hassle free. The restaurant had the food ready for me as I arrived (I ordered for take away although you can eat in). I had a burger with fries, I must say it was brilliant. Really good portion sizes and tasted amazing. Wouldn’t hesitate to return when back in Durham.

We visited last night 3.12.2022. We chanced a table as we were visiting Durham on a coach trip and there were 6 off us so we weren’t holding out much hope but Mercedes’ greated us with a huge bubbly welcome and she managed to squeeze us in ., what a super star ⭐️ Now that’s customer service with a huge 5 star ⭐️ as nothing was too much trouble for her . The food was amazing and I’m no burger lover but it tasted fabulous . From the outside it didn’t look busy but inside the atmosphere was buzzing and everyone was so accommodating . I would 100% recommend this restaurant and would definitely use again . Again big should out to Mercedes’ for fitting us in and her natural customer service skills . We all had full bellies ❤️

Not a huge fan of picklesput decided to try the fried pickles. I was not disappointed. The sauces that you get with them takes it to another level. Could eat these all day long. Service was excellent and restaurant was clean.

I went to Fat Hippo for lunch today. I ordered the Oprah burger. It arrived barely warm with a tiny amount of each of the toppings and no onion ring (which apparently doesn’t come with the smaller size). I asked if I could have some cheese. The server agreed to get me cheese but for an additional cost. It arrived ten minutes later by which time my burger was cold. The server didn’t offer to heat anything up or melt the cheese on top. I was left eating a cold and not particularly nice burger with raw cheese. We paid £30 for two burgers which is a lot given the quality. I’ve had significantly better veggie burgers for £6. In addition, the upstairs of the restaurant had no atmosphere and the general service was pretty poor. There was no music on and there were staff members sitting around at the tables rather than customers.

Excellent beef burgers, good buns and great meat. They also have waffle fries! Great service and a relaxed venue. I wish I lived closer!

Great burger joint. Plenty of choice on the menu, with some fantastic combinations. Had the born slippy which was amazing. Burgers are large but not over phasing. Definitely value for money. Staff really friendly, great and quick service. Would go back again.

What an amazing place, the building full of charm, retaining much of its original features. The burger was succulent and juicy cooked to perfection and the free side of tater tots finished the meal off perfectly 🤤 Lovely staff, they managed to squeeze us in although we didn't have a booking. Top place, top nosh and top staff. The fat Hippo is the place to go if you want good quality food in an amazing setting at a reasonable price👍 5*

Great lunch. Burgers are MASSIVE so the price really is a bargain. First floor is a bit sloppy and on an incline so don’t be surprised if you feel a bit wobbly up there! Check it out - you’ll be glad you did. Oh, and try the Shakes!!

Not recommended. Taking it very carefully of the bill- double check! I’ve had been charged almost 70% more of the original price (crazy, one burger and one IPA for 34£). I thus came back to ask them printing the bill again and got the differences refunded immediately. I think they knew it was wrong.

The range of the menu is good if you like burgers, if not go somewhere else! Staff were friendly and food delivery was reasonably quick. Good location in Durham. Food was a bit pricey, but tasty.

Tasty and filling food, very good customer service and at decent price. I had hangover 3 and Parm something.£12.99 for burger with side and drink £2-3 depending on if you get it hot or cold. Would definitely come again, 100% Recommend.

Overall, it was a very satisfying experience. They have decent portions for sides and burger however I think it was just a bit too greasy specifically the onion rings. I understand it’s burgers and chips so it’s expected to be oily and greasy but I find it a bit too much on the greasy side that it overpowered the flavor. I did struggle a bit to finish my food but it’s still quite enjoyable.

Turned up on a Saturday lunchtime without booking. Staff quickly found a table for two, and were very welcoming. The service was great, and the burgers were very tasty indeed: the best beef burger I’ve had in a long time. The onion rings are fantastic (proper deep-fried onion rings) and the chips are excellent. What more could I have asked for? Maybe a bed to sleep it off? Stuffed! I recommend this place very highly.

Absolutely love this place, their vegan menu is something else! Tried the Kula Faker and onion rings and was blown away! Will totally recommend 😋😋😋

Food was excellent. The cheese balls are out of this world and the burgers were nicely balanced. Great service, great location.

I’ve been here twice to order food for take away. The first time, the waitress told me that I should stand outside to wait for my order (there were free seats inside the restaurant). I literally stood outside alone in the cold winter for 20 minutes while there were seats inside!!! I had sworn never to go back but a friend of mine told me to try a burger. This 2nd time, the waitress that attended to me told me to wait inside but I waited 45 minutes before getting my order!!! Their service is nothing to write home about! Okay, let’s talk about the burgers. The 1st time, I ordered the fat hippo beef burger and was very unimpressed by the entire meal. The 2nd time, I ordered the Hangover III chicken burger and wow!!! I was also underwhelmed!!! Also, some parts of the breaded chicken tasted a bit burnt. I’ve had better burgers and the only thing that I would recommend is their hand-cut fries. Everything about them is overhyped. I’m definitely never going back.

Five lies vegan burger, with ordinary cheese , so tasty , tastiest food I've had in such long time. Staff friendly, efficient, knowledge of food good. Quick service. Would go back , Yes. I'm not a burger person in general. Would be nice if you could just pay for burger with no chips. As meal was large for me. I would of had kids meal but you have be 12 and under. My dietary requirements would be happy with smaller meal.

Amazing food and fantastic staff. Possibly one of the best burgers and shakes I've ever had. I had the American burger with extra pickles and Vanilla milkshake. Hubby had the Last samur-thigh chicken burger he said it was the biggest burger he's had! They were more than happy to let my picky kid have her burger how she wanted it no cheese, little bit of mustard, extra pickles. Next time I'm in Durham I'll definitely be going back.

Great food, service in a quirky old wonky building :) The lunch time single burger offer is great and still big enough for the average person :) Good choice and value on kids meals only issue was the chicken in the kids meal was spicy! I don't think it said it was, or we wouldn't have ordered that for him. That aside though all good and they loved the Hippo juice.

Been to Jesmond and Newcastle before and Durham let down the game today. I got my usual the unreal PB & JJ burger was okay but Jesmond and Newcastle aced it!! Chips were awful not sure why the chips were different and frozen with barely no seasoning on it... was disappointed to say the least cause I always return to fat hippo because of the quality and Durham was poor today.

A fantastic luxurious burger chain emporium. All food is freshly prepared. They cater for all! Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten Free and Dairy Free. It's very rustic and cosy inside, staff are warm and welcoming. Very much recommend this place to anybody.
