Finally a museum done well. Small but great didactic labels. Lovely editing. Smart. And yeah the gift shop was among the best stores in town. Of course everything costs more but the quality and selection is ideal if you are looking for something to really drag home and enjoy you should make sure you visit this shop. Clever kids activities too. I enjoyed the basket section the most. Great explanations.

Awesome museum about the culture of laos. The exhibition is quite small but you can still learn so much about the laos people and especially their music culture. Great Experience! After the museum you can order cheap laos coffee and try some free activities like weaving !

Good place to learn about the different ethnicities in Laos. Did you know that 45% of Lao population is made up of over 160 different tribes?

Nice small museum, which will not take much of your time, but can give you some brief introduction into ethnic groups of Lao. Part of it is also a shop with fix prices plus with origin pointed to exact location of Lao.

A very nice museum and well worth visiting. It's 25,000 kip to get in and we spent around 45 minutes here. The staff were very pleasant, the museum content was written very well in perfect English and it was well laid out. We learned a lot! There's also a very nice gift shop at the end.

A small space but expertly curated! Well worth the entry fee. The items on display here are beautifully presented. The plaques are clearly written and informative. The musical exhibition was fantastic and so well researched. This was the best museum we visited in Laos even though it is small. I felt like the national museum was a show room and didn't actually learn anything. You will leave this centre understanding so much more about Laos.

Really enjoyed my visit to this museum, I went on a Tuesday and at 3pm they had a free tour available which I joined. The tour guide was really insightful and it was great to learn more about Laos. Tickets were 30,000 Kip at the time of writing, and we spent about an hour to an hour and a half here.

This should be on top of your list if you plan on visiting Laos, and are staying or visiting Luang Prabang. You get to know a lot about the ethnical groups in Laos. Many of us are very unaware about their heritage and all the efforts that go into the handicrafts and how easy it get copied by the big fashion companies. If the big fashion companies aren’t transparent, then educate yourself. This museum will help. Take your time, and take photos to read everything back later. Or if you are not staying in this area, visit their website and check out their mini documentary.

Really happy to have visited! If you want to learn more about the culture and ethnic groups of Laos then this is the place for you. My girlfriend and I deeply admire the work that this organization undertakes to protect the heritage of the different ethnical groups and tribes against the massive and influential Fashion brands that copy designs claiming its theirs without giving any credit to 1000’s of years of tradition. Entrance is only 30,000 kip, free for lao people, and in the shop you can buy very beautiful and cute products for yourself or as gifts.

Really enjoyed this little museum. Went to cool down for an hour although only one room has AC. Found it very interesting and enjoyed having a go at weaving in the back area. Such good value for the price and staff very friendly with good English

An exceptionally fine, if small, museum providing an overview of Laos’ rich ethnic mix of cultures. For those interested in full instruments and music, as well as weaving and bakery the information provided is very complete and fascinating. There are numerous interactive displays and opportunities for hands on participation. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a more in depth insight into Lao culture than that provided than most touristic tours.

Entrance 25000kat (could be cheaper) I enjoyed the place as it has collection of facts about local people. The entertainment includes music which you can hear via provided headphones and some things to play with and think about changing of our world. Great work of curator You can also visit some workshops Shop could be better though, plus would be great to have a place for coffee there Also there is useful information how to understand quality of handmade and fabric things in the shops here

An absolutely fabulous center to learn about the cultures and many tribes of Laos. The collection was well organized. I appreciated the information regarding the traditional music. From craftsman who currently make the different instruments from hand, to the explanation of how and when these instruments are played. The weaving exhibit was also well organized. Definitely a must visit cultural center when visiting Luang Prabang.

Tour guide excellent. Got introduced to an overview of Laos ethnic groups as well as a deeper look at 4 in particular. Also a look at the fashion industry and the difference between stealing designs, appropriation, and collaboration/ appreciation. Got to try our hand at crafting too

Must visit place in Luang Prabang. Very close to the night market. They offer exhibits about tribes in Laos, souvenir shops, and craft workshops (recommend booking them in advance). Reasonable price! I'm not sure but some part of spending there will go through to the local tribes.

Located in Khamyoung village, the way to go just beside Dara Market. Preserving Cultural Diversity in Laos. Opened in 2007 in a historic house at the foot of Phousy Hill, the museum at the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre (TAEC) presents engaging exhibitions and special projects that offer a rare and fascinating insight into the diversity and richness of Laos ethnic cultures. From the perspectives of ethnic minority women, this exhibition shares the lives of women in Laos today. With photographs, documentary videos, and objects the exhibition explores themes of work, family, health, heritage and handicrafts as recorded by girls and women in Northern Laos. Over a two year period as part of the Stitching Our Stories (SOS) project, young women from Hmong and Tai Lue communities in Luang Prabang learned to use digital media to record and reflect upon their lives in a rapidly changing Laos. From this collection of photographs, video clips, and interviews, TAEC and the international arts programme, PhotoForward, developed the Caregivers to Culture Keepers exhibition. Community Researchers were integral in framing the exhibition themes, and along with the SOS participants provided the content for the exhibition. Seven short videos present interviews with women in the Hmong and Tai Lue communities on varied topics including a Hmong medicine woman, early childcare in Laos, Hmong batik, Tai Lue weaving, Shamans, and Hmong embroidery, A part of the exhibition, the videos provide a more in-depth look into the lives of women in Laos today. Permanent Exhibitions Two rooms of displays showcase the Akha, Hmong, Tai Lue, and Kmhmu people in Laos and feature traditional handmade clothing and textiles, jewellery, handicraft and household tools, reconstructions of domestic scenes, and religious artefacts. All exhibitions are presented in Lao and English. Translations are available in French, German, Spanish, and Japanese. Collection, Library and Research TAEC maintains a collection of ethnic minority artefacts and a small library on the ethnic groups of Laos. Special projects of TAEC contribute to a growing body of documentation about the diverse cultures found in Laos and include books, short videos, and exhibitions. Open daily 09:00am – 18:00pm From: Tuesday to Sunday (Close on Monday) Tickets: 25.000k/person (under age of 12 years old free entrance)

Small centre but packed with powerful information about the ethnic groups in Laos. Detailed info about their background, the craft they specialise in, including basket weaving and handicraft making. The most interesting part is the changing lives of this people in the villages with times, from making music with traditional instruments made from bamboo to using CDs for recorded music. Nice little gift shop with quality items as well.

Small space, but a refreshing take on the traditional ethnographic museum. As an anthropologist, I often find myself cringing at exhibits in museums and cultural centres. Here, I was pleasantly surprised to see the care with which the curators, exhibition designers, and staff presented the various artifacts. Despite being labeled a “traditional arts and ethnology centre,” the idea of “tradition” was dealt with in a nuanced way. The wall text at the entrance to a special ethnomusicological exhibit explicitly stated a core tenet of contemporary anthropology: the displayed cultural objects exist in the present, as do the people who use them. They are not part of a timeless past just because they are traditional. Overall, I appreciated the way the exhibits - and the guide for the afternoon museum tour I attended - were respectful of the subject matter and the lives behind the objects. I found the museum informative about cultural practices and ways of life, and honest about the impacts of modern life on Laos’ various ethnic groups. In addition to two small gallery spaces, the venue also had an event/activity space at the back of the building, where I was able to attend an informative (if somewhat technical) talk about local and regional indigo production.

Small, but nicely laid out museum. Only three rooms, but we'll researched. Lots of clothing and musical instruments. The photo below is maybe not the most exceptional piece, but indicative of what you can see. I would have rated it somewhere between 3 and 4 stars if I had just walked through on my own. However I was lucky to be there at a time when they had a free tour with some explaination. Sure, you could read the information in English on the boards, but the tour gave it a personal touch and more details on the music instruments.

Well presented and informative little museum about Lao ethnic groups and their cultural practices. Watch the opening times - like many places, they have a lunch break and not open Mondays, which we found out the hard way.
