This is the main temple of Vientiane, and we can easily understand why it is so famous. The temple is wonderful, pretty well maintained. I don't know when was the last time they covered it with gold, but it's shining pretty hard with sun, it's amazing. If you come just after lunch time, you will be alone in there, without meeting all the tourists buses bringing so many people inside. Definitely worth the visit.

Pha That Luang is a significant Buddhist monument located in Vientiane, the capital city of Laos. Also known as the Great Stupa, it is considered one of the most important national symbols and religious sites in Laos. Pha That Luang is a large golden stupa that stands at a height of about 44 meters (144 feet). The current structure dates back to the 16th century, although it has been reconstructed and renovated several times throughout history. The stupa is built in a traditional Lao architectural style, with influences from Hindu and Buddhist art. The monument holds great religious and historical importance for the people of Laos. It is believed to enshrine a relic of the Buddha, making it a significant pilgrimage site for Buddhists. The annual Boun That Luang festival, held during the full moon in November, attracts thousands of devotees who come to pay their respects and participate in religious ceremonies. The exterior of Pha That Luang is covered in gold leaf, giving it a distinctive and awe-inspiring appearance. The stupa is surrounded by a complex of smaller temples, buildings, and gardens, which together form the That Luang complex. Visitors can explore the grounds, admire the intricate architecture and decorations, and learn about the history and significance of the site. Pha That Luang is not only a religious site but also serves as a symbol of national identity for the people of Laos. Its image is featured on the national seal, currency, and official documents of the country, highlighting its cultural and historical significance. Visiting Pha That Luang provides a glimpse into Laos' rich Buddhist heritage and offers a serene and peaceful atmosphere for reflection and contemplation. It is a must-visit destination for those interested in history, culture, and spirituality in Southeast Asia.

Pha That Luang in Vientiane is an iconic and culturally significant site. The golden stupa stands majestically, representing Buddhist architecture and Lao heritage. Visitors often describe the experience as awe-inspiring, especially when admiring the intricate details and the sheer grandeur of the structure. The serene surroundings and well-maintained grounds contribute to a peaceful atmosphere, making it a must-visit for those interested in history, spirituality, and architecture in Vientiane.

Came here just in time for the That Luang festival. The stupa is magnificent! Women need to wear a traditional Lao skirt called a "sinh" in order to enter. Men just need to cover their knees and shoulders. It's a sign of respect and you won't be allowed to go in otherwise. I saw some reviews of other foreigners being removed from the temples. They were most likely not dressed appropriately. As with other religious venues around the world, being modest is important. If you've been to Cambodia and seen Ankor Wat then you know what I'm talking about. The stupa grounds are pretty massive considering all of the vendors and visitors from all over Laos that it can accommodate. There are other buildings and statues in the direct vicinity which are also beautiful to visit.

It's a nice place and ypu can see a lot there. The historical buildings are beautiful and with a guide you get to know the background of everything too. At the temple there was a feast going on. So a lot of people were there. Still nobody was bothered and we could walk around without any problems. I think it's a must see in the capitol city.

It's beautiful and the surrounding grounds and peaceful. There were many preparations for Boun Khao Phansa the following day. We did not pay to enter the temple proper.

That Luang is the national symbol and most important religious monument of Laos. Foreigners entrance fee 30,000 kip & locals 10,0000 kip. The temple is wonderful, pretty well maintained. For three days during the full moon of the twelfth lunar month (November) you can enjoy the most important festival in Vientiane: the Theravada Buddhists festival. I’d definitely recommend visiting this place

Another beautiful temple and park in Vientiane. Accessible by bus, but easier by Loca or taxi as bus service, though really inexpensive, can be unpredictable at times. Nice spot for a picnic and there is some souvenir shopping at the temple.

Pha That Luang in Vientiane, Laos, is a magnificent Buddhist stupa that stands as a symbol of Lao culture and national identity. Its golden exterior gleams in the sunlight, creating a stunning spectacle against the clear blue sky. The intricate design and architecture reflect the rich heritage of the region. Steeped in history, Pha That Luang has undergone several reconstructions, with the current structure dating back to the 16th century. The monument's spiritual significance is evident in the devout pilgrims and worshippers who frequent the site. The surrounding grounds host festivals and events, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. Visitors can explore the temple's inner sanctum, adorned with religious art and sculptures, providing insight into Lao Buddhism. The panoramic views from the top offer a breathtaking perspective of Vientiane, making the climb worthwhile. However, the site's accessibility and maintenance could be improved, and some areas might benefit from better signage for historical context. Despite these minor considerations, Pha That Luang remains a must-visit destination, encapsulating Laos' cultural richness and spiritual essence.

Pha That Luang, the national symbol of Laos. This massive golden stupa is the most important religious monument in Laos, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stupa was built in the 16th century and it is believed to contain a relic of the Buddha in fact a part of his breast bone. Worth a visit but be warned it’s 30,000 Kip for foreigners but 5000 Kip for Laos people.

This marks my 3rd visit to the stupa that is central to the Laotian cultural identity (even appearing on money). As with most Laos attractions, the foreigner's admission fee is three times that of a local, but still very reasonable. Beyond the obvious photo opportunities, the stupa contains a museum which indicates the connection this area has with the Angkor Empire, including much statuary of the Angkor/Khmer period and a spectacular bust of Jayavarman VII, the greatest Angkor king. Regrettably, there is not much filling in of the context via signs or displays. Behind the stupa, there is an area of souvenir shops, a nice, clean public toilet and an abandoned park showcasing Lao traditional houses. The stupa can be reached by bus or by walking about 30 minutes from the Victory Monument (or tuk tuk, of course). As there is a nice park and an interesting pagoda along the route, taking a walk might be the best option

Beautiful golden temple, about 15 minutes from central Vientiane. Fairly small complex with lots of history. There are old Buddah relics lining the outside of the enclosure and photos and paintings of different eras of the temple. The price was 30k, but there are a few other (free) temples close by too.

Very nice place to visit, not so busy with tourists, and can relax and walk around outside or inside (for a small fee of about 160 euros). The grounds are well kept, the temples interesting, and the statutes and art very decorative. Worth spending a few hours

Pha That Luang, or the great Supta, was built in the 16th century when the king relocated their ancient capital from Luang Prabang to Vientiane. It's worthwhile to pay a visit to this remaining supta and their 2 temples.

The iconic golden temple of Vientiane. Apart from the impressive, tall stupa there is not much else inside the walls. Several Buddha statues and remnants are under the side roofs. The area and temples surrounding this one were far more rewarding to visit. But if in Vientiane, I guess this is a mandatory photo spot.

The golden stupa at Wat Pha That Luang is the national symbol of Laos. The original temple was built in the 3rd century, but has undergone many reconstructions since then. History states that it was badly damaged by the Thai army in 1828 and not really restored until 1900. The temple is a popular site for locals to make offerings and merit and is a popular destination for locals during Buddhist festivals. Worth checking out.

Very impressive gold covered temple. It's quite large in size. Lots of historical artifacts scattered around. Would have been nice if there was English translations for the many foreigners. Well worth seeing.

The most venerated Stupa of Laos. Its origin goes back up to the 3rd century AC. It is full of Laotian symbol, this explains also why it is so cherished. There are 3 levels in the Stupa. The tourists have access to the first. The second is used by the Laotians for special occasions - celebrations. The 3rd is reserved for the priests. There are beautiful Buddha's statues which can he seen on the ground level; some are ancient - 17th, 18th century...

Large golden stupa that overlooks the city of vientiane. The stupa had many buddha statues that loops around in a square that had signs explaining the history you can read. Some sides had a place where you can pray and pay respect as an option. Nice patchy grass to walk on and admire the large monument. A cool place to visit if you like large stupas.

As an icon of Laos it is a must visit, slightly underwhelming considering its importance to Lao Buddhism and Lao country status. Roofed enclosure with historical statues on display. Lovely reclining Buddha next door. Usual tourist stands out front, some of which are very friendly and helpful with some beautiful Lao traditional clothing at very friendly prices, others obnoxious and overbearing in their need to hawk their cheap and tacky wears at exuberant prices.

Most sacred and historic stupa in Laos. Aside from central stupa, there are 3 temples and area for models of traditional Lao house beside it.

A rare 5 star review from me, but worth it. Some beautiful buildings, buda and gold stupa. Relatively cheap taxi ride from centre of Vientiane. On the way can stop at arch for quick stop as no longer can go to top. Highlight for me at temple was making merit by releasing birds. Was hoping for doves but settled for sparrows. Can get a nice professional photo taken in front of stupda for reasonable price.

Grand stupa, the most important temple of Laos culture. It's believed to enshrine a relic of Buddha, and was destroyed and rebuilt several times over many wars. Beautiful to walk around and have a zen morning. There's some paintings of one side for historic reference as well. Fun fact: Read that only the top is gold plated and the main body is gold painted.

That Luang is a huge Buddhist Stupa of 45 meters in height and width 69 built in pyramidal shape and is surrounded in turn by 30 small stupas. The That Luang stupa is covered with 500 kilos of gold leaf, precious metal that achieves such impressive golden color, symbol of the splendour of Laos. The complex where rises the Pha That Luang Temple is surrounded by a cloister 85 meters long, cloister which houses various statues of Buddha and paintings.
