Do Not, I repeat, Do Not!!! Rent a car from Alamo Rent a car at Tacumen airport or anywhere else in Panama. We rented a Toyota midsize, on line, prior to arriving in Panama. We paid for the rental as well as the insurance. When we got here, instead of the midsize car we requested they had a small, barely fit 4 people, car with no trunk, really!! Anyways, we should have cancelled there and then but we didn’t and we were charged $125 more for requesting a bigger car, which we thought we had requested and paid for already. If that wasn’t bad enough they told us, “we don’t accept the insurance you purchased online so you will need to purchase more if you want insurance”, that was another $225. One would think that we should have walked away then but again, we didn’t. We paid again for what we already had and left on our way. About a day into our trip, the car breaks down. It won’t move or drive and we are left stranded. We call Alamo, expecting to receive some sympathy about the broken down car they gave us but, Noo! They tell us, that they will send a tow truck for it but that we need to find our way across town to get a replacement car. They didn’t bring one to us nor did they come get us, we had to take a taxi. Now, the best part, to add insult to injury, they refused to replace the car unless we paid $300, Again, crazy!!! They told us, “you don’t have insurance”. We were like wait, what? We not only purchased insurance prior to coming here, via the web on the Alamo’s site, but we were forced to purchase more insurance when we got here and now you say we have no insurance? What kind of ridiculous scam is this? So, stranded, in a not so great Part of town, with the kids, my husband had no other recourse but to pay another $300 or we weren’t getting another car!! We were robbed by Alamo and their fraudulent, unethical practices. They did not offer any kind of customer service regarding their defected vehicle and it leaving us stranded and in a precarious situation. Now, last, but certainly not least, they made us wait till the car was towed to a mechanic and inspected and told us that we may be liable for the mechanical problems of the car, whatttt!!! Is there anybody who can direct us to the corporate office information for Alamo Car Rental Service In Panama, Panama? We have been robbed, help! C. Mancebo. Stay away from Alamo Car Rentals In Panama.

I made the reservations online, ahead of time, and was quoted about $200 for 6 days. I arrive and they tell me that it will be $490 with the MANDATORY accident coverage. When I asked to see the document with the options he could not show it to me but he said that the cheapest option was $395. I walked across the hall to Express Car Rental and got the same car for $322. I do not mind paying the money but I do highly dislike "bait and switch".

Booked through Expedia , When reached counter they said we don’t accept Expedia insurance, basic insurance was more than the car rental. And full insurance was even more. So car rental was cost like 2x from the actual rate. I just cancelled the booking & walked away in Uber. Just rented the car from Downtown on very reasonable price. Just avoid airport rentals.

Alamo rental car Panama Tocumen airport, if I could give them no stars I would. Bad customer service , no roadside assistance per their employee. Contacted Alamo here in the states , they said it’s a franchise and they do as they please. Alamo has informed me for 3 weeks they would have the International Area Supervisor contact us and nothing. They say they can’t do anything about it. They’ll continue to forward information as of 1 hour ago. This is not about $ , it’s the principle behind our concern. Never rent from Alamo or Enterprise they are the same company.

Long story short if you have a Panamanian passport but a license from another country do not try to rent from them. First of all, this is not a review of the staff. They were quite competent. However, I booked a car a month in advance for the Christmas holiday. However, when I went to pick up the car they told me I could not rent a car because I did not have a Panama licence (mine is from US) but my passport was Panamanian. I told them I don't live in Panama so I don't need a license from here. In typical fashion they decided that their rental company requires that if you are a Panamanian but don't live in the country they won't rent to you unless you get a Panamanian license. Which makes no sense. They said I could try another rental agency but of course nobody has any cars without reservations on Christmas day.

Just returned home from Panama City. I had researched and read all the horror stories online about renting from car rental agencies in Tocumen. My experience was a positive one. Here is a few things I did to ensure a smooth transaction. First, I called Alamo and spoke with a American representative and made my reservations with them for Panama City. Yes, I took out both insurances and yes I am glad I did. I have driven in many places around the world and I would highly recommend it. Second, I called Alamo In Panama City, Panama weeks before to make sure reservations were in place. Third, I treated them with respect and grace. We were visiting their country from the USA. Please be a good representative. The counter people were friendly and spoke English well. Be prepared to pay. I paid over $600 for six days and toll passes and taxes. If you can't afford a car rental take taxis. Just a tip.. Alamo and National work together so if no one is at the Alamo counter when you get there the people at National can help out. A very positive experience! Thanks Alamo!

I have been an Alamo customer. I had never experience something so bad. They charged me for a scratch that was already on the car when rented. Take your business elsewhere. 0 stars if I could.

Made reservation weeks ago. Arrived at airport and they said it was canceled as they did not have any cars. Later said that they have a Prado, but it was like $1,000 per day. I ended up getting a car from Thrifty. Much better attention and service. Odd how later when I was in the parking lot waiting for my Thrifty car I saw others picking up cars from Alamo. Maybe they paid more or prepaid, though I did not see a prepay option on Alamo's website when I placed my reservation.

Our experience is base in lack of honesty from Alamo or National or Servicios Turisticos Panamenos, S.A., and the trick is that they offer you a courtesy hours that end in an extra day to pay, please be aware of this low tactic to do business.

(Translated by Google) After more than 2 years of client of this company I was involved in an accident just 5 minutes from the airport and they did not give me assistance on the road I thought I lost the flight and traveled with a minor, luckily the Panamanian authorities behaved very well I do not recommend them apart that it was not our fault they made us pay a lawyer so the insurance is as if I had lost it (Original) Despues de mas de 2 años de cliente de esta compañía me vi involucrados en un accidente a solo 5 minutos del aeropuerto y no me dieron asistencia en carretera pense que perdia el vuelo y viajaba con una menor de edad por suerte las autoridades panameñas se portaron muy bien no los recomiendo aparte que no fue culpa nuestra nos hicieron pagar un abogado asi que el seguro es como si lo hubiera perdido

I have travelled to Panama about 20 times and have tried most of the car agencies at the airport and for the last 4-5 visits I have used Alamo. Most recent was a two week rental of a mid-size sedan for a very reasonable $480 including obligatory insurance plus collision and theft. In my experience they never hard sell additional insurance. The key is to book the basic rental online and consider any extra insurance in person. Staff are not overly friendly but nor do they waste your time with idle chit-chat so service is quick. As a side note, I have had terrible experiences with Sixt and National rental).

Terrible experience!! Do not book with this company. We took a care and they charged us 180 dollars for non existent bumper scratches, even though we took the full coverage option!! (They claimed full coverage only covers accidents with police reports). They also made up a scratch on the door, but when I went over it with my hand turns out there was no scratch. Complete scam.

Read a lot of bad reviews for renting a car at the Tocumen Airport, so was a hesitant before committing, but it ended up being the only real option for our trip. Went with Alamo and was not disappointed. They were professional and prompt, and the car was clean and in great shape. A few pointers: (1) it's not going to be cheap once you add in insurance and taxes - don't come expecting it to be just $9/day or something ridiculous (2) I brought a letter from my credit card company saying the CDW would be covered, which was accepted at the desk without issue (3) I opted into all the other liability, roadside assistance, etc coverage to avoid any issues during our week there (4) they did put a $2k hold on my card which other reviewers had mentioned (5) leave some time for drop off so you can inspect the car with them - took about 15 minutes and there were no issues at all (6) Taxes and airport concession fees were not in my original quote, which was the only surprise I had (about $50 for the week we had it) (7) they add in the tolls when you drop it off, for us it was about $20 for driving from the Cidade to the canal, Santa Catalina, Santa Fe and Playa Reina and back. With these in mind, there were no big surprises, the car was great, Panama was terrific and I hope to be able to visit again soon.

The rental was through Expedia and went well enough, the car was in good condition and we were able to pick up and return smoothly. However, they charge an additional ~$15/day for a required insurance that they didn't tell us about in advance, so we ended up paying double what we expected. Also note that there are issues with corrupt police officers on major highways. Whatever you do, don't speed.

Before leaving for Panama we read horror stories about renting a car in Panama, many insurance issues. We rented a car with ALAMO PTY (airport location) and were very pleased. We booked with them a couple days before arriving and had no issue, they accepted our insurance coverage with Visa without asking any question. Customer service was great and very quick both at pick up and drop off. We defintely recommend to book with Alamo PTY.

After reading car rental reviews I was concerned about folks not accepting my costco citicard theft coverage, but Alamo did with no problems. Osman was extremely helpful checking me out (both in English and Spanish). Check in was extremely smooth even though i didn’t return it as clean as possible.

I had great services as far the vehicle and the customer service . I was mugged and lost the keys. My rental with Alamo had full coverage but apparently the keys were not covered so I had to pay an extra 300 for the keys and wasn't giving another vehicle

Beware of renting a car in Panama with any agency, in particular Alamo rent a car. Trying to rent a car in Panama City, Panama is a nightmare. Alamo wanted a $2000 deposit for a RAV4. I prepaid for the car and insurance through Expedia, they wanted additional insurance (third party insurance). If that’s a requirement why not add it or at least let us know on the website before making a purchase. Surprises and hidden fees is the name of the game in Panama. They make it unaffordable to rent a car. All credit cards have limits. You can’t budget your vacation if you don’t know how much anything cost.

Outstanding and the #1 best rental car company at PTY. I have tried all the major rental car companies in PTY and Alamo is hands down the best. The other rental car companies can add heavy insurance cost to the rental from the base price but Alamo has never done so. **Important for all the rental companies to book online in advance and NOT at the counter upon arrival to get the best rate. If you have a credit card that offers extended rental insurance you can decline the insurance. AMEX is the CC I use each time I book rental cars for this reason.**

Returned my car which came to $73 and was told the ‘hold’ would be released but the ‘hold’ showed up today as a charge 😡 This after I was told it would cost in excess of $1100 for a van rental for 9 days and I just had a van in Orlando for 5 days for $205đŸ€” Will take uBer if ever here again. Absolute car rental scammmers. We had a car booked online and they were trying to charge us five times more for the extra car insurance. Stay away. Third party liability is already included in the base rental car price. We confirmed with the local police. Ended up renting another car for the original price quoted, without insurance, in the center of Panama City at AVIS.

  • 1/5 Dave 4 years ago on Google
Do not use their services, they will try to charge you additional insurance that is already included and will likely come out to be double of what you think you are paying.

We Always use Alamo rental cars at Tocumen Airport. I travel to Panama at least twice a year as my wife is Panamanian. We've settled on using Alamo at the airport there (Tocumen). This last time, I had a small accident in my rental car (which was brand new). I scratched a light post backing up. Alamo was very reasonable about the repairs & cost. It would cost me a lot more to fix the car in the USA. Note that you will always have to pay for a little additional insurance when renting a car in Panama. This is for any rental car company there. Also Alamo will send you an email a few days before the rental asking you to confirm. I'd suggest one confirm as cars in Panama can be hard to get during high season.
