A wonderful hike that I'd highly recommend It's a bit over 8 miles to hoover dam and back from the parking lot, although because it's mostly flat, you'd never guess it. A pretty easy one! I went in October, so the weather was also perfect. There are signs warning of the dangerous heat during the summer months I arrived around 7am on a Sunday and the lot was nearly empty. Upon my return a couple of hours later, maybe around 9:30, the lot was packed, with no parking. Great views of Lake Meade from several spots. Very cool tunnels, hills, educational postings, and other sites along the way. Very happy I tried this trail, and will definitely be back

The trail is so cool, it is definitely worth your time. The trail is nice and smooth perfect for families and animals. The views were absolutely gorgeous. You can go all the way to Hoover Dam from this trail. I think it is a great trail but definitely wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and wear sunscreen! This is one of those trails that is perfect to hike in the cooler times of the year. 10/10 would recommend!

Nice trail with water views. Easy for families. There were several people pushing baby strollers and walking dogs. I walked 2.5 miles up and the trail still continued. There isn’t a bathroom for about 2-3 miles, so prepare for that. There’s a few places to sit along the way. Also a couple cool tunnels along the way. Parking is limited.

Well kept trail. Very flat and easy for motorized scooter or wheelchair. Bathroom about half way to the hoover dam And at the beginning of the trail. This trail is not in the fee area, limited parking at trailhead but visitors center also has parking and the is a paved path to get the trail head from visitor center. Tiny gravel and dust that gets into your shoes. Lots of benches over looking the lake to stop, rest and take in the view.

Gorgeous, serene, historical, great views... Just all around the perfect QUICK get away from Las Vegas. I used to take my Diesel boy here for walks all the time, he's no longer with me but I felt him everywhere the last time I went, as it was our special getaway. Truly a special a place in my heart

This historic trail is well groomed and an easy, flat hike. There are benches along the way to rest or take in the view. There are restrooms at the trail head and a port-a-potty, trash cans, and picnic tables after the last of the five tunnels. (The trash cans are well placed to discard doggy clean up bags that were used along the way. Please clean up after your dogs) There is signage along the way to explain the building of the Hoover Dam. The trail is used by bike riders, casual hikers and runners. Remember to bring water along with you as it is the desert. The trail is closed June, July, August, and September due to the extreme weather conditions. It is free to park and no fees to enter.

A very cool trail to either walk or bike. You can also go all the way to Hoover Dam. Super tall tunnels, with the views of Lake Mead and the Marina. We did see a couple of the famous big horn sheep, and another time before a big Coyote. Nice to enjoy for exercise or to enjoy with the family. I do not recommend it in the summer. You'd die from the heat

Nice trail until you get passed the 5 tunnels, at that point you go near the highway and a dumping ground for turbines so it sort of ceases to be a hiking trail and becomes a way to get to hoover dam if you want to park a few miles away. The trail is, if nothing else, a great way to visually see how much we should be doing a better job of conserving water.

A nice trail to do on a cooler day, we went an overcast morning and walked a few miles before turning back as the clouds started to break up, this was mid September, I'd suggest avoiding in the summer as there is little shelter, definitely wear a hat and plenty of sunscreen. The trail is flat and a nice relaxing walk, I'd do again on a cooler day all the way to the Hoover Dam in future.

This is a great hike. For the most part the trail is flat and easy to follow. There’s a rest area halfway between the trail and the dam. That’s your checking point to continue or return. The tunnels are great, and the view of the lake is astonishing.

Really fun and easy hike, really more of a walk! This would be a great first hike for kids and dogs, very gradual ascent, beautiful views, and a million flowers! There were what felt like thousands of caterpillars all around. We also saw lots of bats at sunset. Heads up though because there is a closure at tunnel 3. Don't forget your water, there are no services on this trail. And if you are coming at sunset bring flashlights (ideally headlamps) because there is no lighting. Pack it in and pack it out :) Have fun!

Took the kids on a family bike ride. This trail is awesome and perfect for a kids bike ride. Our 9 year old did great. Fun hike to see the dam at the end. We will be back for sure. We went in winter and it got a little cold for some of us. But I could see it being miserable in the summer. Bring water and watch for big Horn sheep, we saw several and it was awesome.

Go for the amazing view of Lake Mead and tunnels! What a cool way to get outdoors and have a picturesque view of Lake Mead. The trail even has small little fun facts along the side and benches. I recommend starting at the Hoover Dam Lodge. Their parking lot connects to the trail and afterwards you can cool down or get a bite to eat at the hotel.

*Danger Warning - Very nice and easy trail but it has warnings about heat kills. It is dangerous to hike this trail in hot temperatures because of lack of shade and not much breeze. It recommends not hiking this trail during the hot months from June to Sept. I hiked the whole trail on 07/05/20, 106°, through the five tunnels and back, it was very difficult because of the heat. I recommend following the danger warnings and not hike this trail during extreme heat. It challenged me and another couple that I helped rescue by driving my pickup on the trail to pick them up, hopefully they recovered and are fine now. Stay safe and always be prepared before hiking, your life depends on it.

Pretty easy trail to follow, and of course going through the tunnels are a cool experience plus you are having the views of the lake and you end up at the Dam 👌🏼👍🏼

The railroad began under construction in 1931 being worked on 24 hours a day. It was built to quickly haul massive pieces that were needed to construct the Hoover Dam. Four gas locomotives and 9 steam locomotives were used to operate this system. At that time 71 people were in full operation of the tunnels. 6 companies were used to build this system. There are 5 tunnels that are built exactly the same in dimensions. 300 feet in length and 25 feet in diameter. 90 lbs rail construction comprising of Oregon fir ties along with standard gauge built these enormous rails. When the dam was completed in 1935 there was no need for the tunnels anymore. The government would occasionally use the tunnels, but eventually decided to dismantle the line in 1962. In the 1984 the area was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and a trail for a walking tour was announced. This is the only part of the trail that is intact or not underwater. In 1990 tunnel 4 was burned due to arson, tunnel 5 was met with that same demise several years previous in 1978- however was rebuilt and shot over with shotcrete in the summer of 2001. This distance roundtrip is 7.5 miles of very easy grade. This hike is hot in the summer, be mindful of your animals as it is distressing to them when the ground is very hot. Some of the tunnels have bats so if you have issues with white noise bring ear plugs as it will help to lessen the sensitivity you are experiencing. Would thoroughly recommend - pricing is free. Bring lots of water. There are many look out areas with historical interest points and benches with amazing views along the way. Location is Lake Mead/ Lake Mead visitor center parking lot - no fee

Nice easy walk from the Railroad Hiking Trail parking lot to the Hoover Dam. The railway tracks have been removed and it’s an easy smooth surface to walk on. Took about 1 1/2 hours each way with stops. Passes through the ‘old boneyard’ and ends up at the 5th floor of the Hoover Dam parking lot. Good views of Lake Mead marina along the way. Well worth the hike and a great way to get to the dam without having to go through the road security and try to find parking near the dam.

A nice hike with a few different options as you go. A good option for those with dogs or children. Lots of bikes; not sure how I feel about the electric ones zipping around the trails. Good view of the diminishing lake.

We felt like we stepped back in time while exploring the Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail. This trail offers a captivating journey through time and nature, it transported us to an era when railroads played a pivotal role in shaping the American West. The trail's well-maintained path winds through rugged terrain, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape, and stunning deserts hues. The real highlight of the hike, however, is the series of historic railroad tunnels along the way. These tunnels, originally constructed in the early 20th century, served as a crucial link for transporting materials during the construction of the Hoover Dam. Walking through them is like stepping back in time, with their weathered walls and echoes of the past whispering tales of bygone days. The engineering marvel of these tunnels is truly awe-inspiring, and provides a unique glimpse into the region's rich history. Remnants of the Hoover Dam's construction can be seen throughout this route. There are five tunnels, each 25 feet in diameter/height. Aside from the historical significance, the trail also boasts a diverse array of flora and fauna, although we didn’t get a glimpse of any of them, the signs assured us they were there😄. The trail from beginning to end is approximately 8.5 miles there and back, it starts in Boulder City off Lakeshore Rd and ends at the Hoover Dam. It’s an easy trail but long, you can turn around at any point but we did the full 8.5 miles. It is highly trafficked, and it can be walked, jogged, or biked. We had panoramic views of Lake Mead and the Boulder Basin region along the way. After passing the tunnels, elevation changes bringing new views, new hills to climb, and the final descent towards Hoover Dam. The Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail is a must-visit destination and a great way to stay active, sneak in some exercise in nature while taking in the beauty and history of the American West.

I have lived in Las Vegas since 2000, I cannot believe this is the first time that I have been to this hiking trail. This hiking trail was super fun to hike, we started near the visitor center at the lake mead recreation entrance and we hiked all the way to Hoover dam. Definitely a must see, the tunnels are really cool and the view of the lake was beautiful.

Found this path on the app "Traillink ". It was exactly what we were looking for! A family friendly bike ride, not too many people, and gorgeous scenery! Really hot at 10am start but the tunnels were great shade to stop and hydrate. It is supposed to be 3.7 miles all the way to Hoover Dam but is shortened to 2.1 miles (one way) as the Dam is closed due to Covid. Take note that its packed gravel, loose gravel and rocks. Not so good for my road bike but I managed with some concentrated riding. My husbands tire popped with 1/2 mile left and he has a trail bike. Kids bikes were fine.

(Translated by Google) 1933 Six consortiums operated this system with nine steam locomotives and four gas locomotives carrying concrete and equipment for the Hoover Dam. The mountain was pulled into a tunnel, and 300 feet in diameter and 25 feet in diameter are taller than other tunnels to carry trains and equipment. Lake Mead on the left side of the 6-mile round-trip course is really superb, and it is better to avoid July-August as it is too hot (Original) 1933 6개 컨소시엄으로 후버댐에 사용할 콘크리트 와 장비등을 운반할 9 대의 증기기관차 와 4 대의 가스 기관차를 71며이 시스템을 운영했다 산을 끌어 터널을 만들었으며 300 feet 지름 25 feet 규모는 기차와 장비를 운반키 위해 다른 터널보다 높다 왕복 6 mile 코스에 좌측에 펼쳐지는 lake Mead 는 정말 절경이며 7~8 월은 너무 더워 피하는 것이 좋다

I came to visit this trail again this morning as it had been years. It is stroller friendly and wagon friendly which is super nice with pets and kids. Highly recommend you bring cold water with. Great views, easy trail, but very little shade.

A beautiful hike near vegas. The trail is flat, mostly clean and not much traffic. The view is disturbed by electric towers… it’s not stunning but it’s nice to see the water and mountains from the trail.

Easy hike minus the heat so get up early and do this early. Several old train tunnels, and views of lake mead. Hoover dam closed d/t covid 19, unable to walk all the way to the dam. As with any desert hike bring water.

Easy trail. Congested at entrance and parking may be difficult to find—unless, you get there before the crowds. If you go in the summer, BE PREPARED AND HYDRATE!! Temperatures hit the triple digits. As going through the caves, you will hear and see bats. I went during COVID 19 pandemic, so access to Hoover Dam was closed and there was an officer truck there, to prevent anyone from crossing into the dam area. Wonderful views of Lake Mead and along the path, there are benches to sit and enjoy the view.

Amazing hike! Definitely bring sunscreen and water. I didn't finish going all the way to the Hoover dam. I think the best views were on the first half and do the dam separately but the first half is definitely worth seeing and it is free entry/parking.

Sunday, Feb 18 long weekend at about 1:30-2PM, the parking lot was full but luckily we found a spot. The up hill climb was not bad. It was steady incline and flatten up in area. With our bicycle, we were able to get to the security post area in about 30-40 minutes. Restroom at the stop point really smelled bad. Nice view of Lake Mead and down to the dock in which you definitely can see how low the water level is. Bring water and a hat, depending on time and day. Enjoyed the trail back as it was mainly down hill but many people.

Great place for a hike and to take the dogs. Great views of the lake. We couldn't go as far since the park had tunnel 3 closed for what seemed to be maintenance. We will be back before it gets too hot. It will take a few hours to complete the full trial. So be prepared and bring fluids.

  • 5/5 Cory C. 3 years ago on Google
Really nice area to get around and go for a little hike. The trails is pretty flat but with a slight grade. Seen toddlers on it, so any age should be fine. Take water! as the only parts that are shaded are in the tunnels. You still have a good hike to get to the first tunnel.

As others have pointed out, less of a hike (not much of a challenge unless it involves the summer heat) and more so like a park path. Still, the vistas of Lake Mead and surrounding desert are spectacular and there are ample park benches to sit down and admire the views. Can get crowded even on a weekday.

Amazing piece of history hidden right off the main road. The walk can take a few hours, however, about 15-20 minutes in and you'll find yourself at the railroad caves. If you continue the trail it leads you to the Hoover Dam. There is a view of Lake Mead just about the whole hike. This is a full-day experience. Worth setting some time aside for!
