Set beneath the Bolsa Palace which was partly built on the grounds of St. Francisco convent, this is one of the Porto's best. There's a pretty high entry fee (8 Euros if I remember correctly), but it is worth it. The interiors are unbelievably rich, covered in detailed gilded wood work. Despite the main altar being covered for renovations as many others say here, I still give it 5 as the side chapels are literally stunning. The ticket enables you to visit a museum and catacombs which were really interesting.

A must visit church and the ticket purchased includes the older church, artifacts/museum and the catacombs. We visited around late afternoon and it is next to the stock exchange building or the commercial plaza. There were no queues to purchase tickets or to enter the church. It was a relaxing, soul searching + architectural experience. Photos are not allowed in the older church but the interior decorations and depictions are amazing and a feast to the eyes and soul. The catacombs are next to the newer church and it's well managed and amazing to explore. The artifacts/museums are not that exciting once you see the older church, catacombs but worth exploring.

I mean I have seen a lot of churches and cathedrals but without any doubt this is one of the most notorious ones. It has two buildings. The one the right is absolutely incredible. You are not allowed to take photos inside and I respected that and did not take any photos. The one on the left is small and peaceful.

(Translated by Google) In my opinion, it is a visit that can be avoided. It is a beautiful church, if you like everything recharged to the maximum. And where you pay 8 euros to visit it, along with the catacombs, which is honestly not a big deal. I don't think it's something worth paying that money to visit. There are churches to see, which are free to enter, which are worth more.

7,5€ (+ 1€ for a pamphlet) is hefty price to visit a church, that should be open to anybody. You are not allowed to take photographs. The information in the church and the catacombs next to it are sparse. Skip this and visit the palacio next door - for 10€ you will get a tour in english through the impressive court building.

I'm just in awe of how beautiful this church is. It's definitely one of the most beautiful architectures I have ever seen in my life. I went inside and sat there for over one and a half hour just to admire the walls, ceiling, statues... There are so many details! The catacombs were also great. It's a must-visit location in Porto.

Must visit! Imposing church with gold and fantastic altarpieces. All the work inside the church is splendid. When going up the stairs, we have two notices warning that the main altar is being restored. It also informs that despite the need for intervention, the entire church is open for visits, you can also visit the Church of the third parties, the museum and the catacombs. The price makes it worth the visit.

OMG - this is a must visit and the detailing is exquisite and intricate. Being a catholic was a bit surprised that there was a charge to enter. Church - but when I entered I realized they are spending much more on the restoration and upkeep of the place. While they inform you not to take pictures when I’m entering, virtually everyone was taking pictures inside the church and honestly would be a crime if one couldn’t capture of beauty of some of the altars inside.

Really beautiful Church in the heart of the Porto Riviera. The ticket prices are Euro 9 per person and an English written guide costs an additional Euro. It's expensive but it's worth it frankly as the woodwork with the gold work is incredible and must cost a fortune to maintain. We didn't visit the catacombs but the ticket prices include this. Make sure you take in the Christ genealogical tree. Again a must visit if in Porto.

Worth a quick visit. The usual Boroque architecture and decor typical of Porto churches... the gold overdone in the Main church. Some very expressive and beautiful statues The basement I would avoid. Seems like a mass grave yard with all and sundry buried and numbered over the floor you walk on 🫥

Definitely worthy of a visit while in Porto. The architecture and gold gilt was stunning. I was in awe whilst walking around the church. The catacombs and museum are also included in the price. There was no queuing when I went in and there's also a little shop at the end. €9 entry and €1 for a guide booklet

The interior of the church is full of Baroque art and decor. Gold leaf covers almost everything making for a visual treat! Tree of Jesse is an impressive sculpture. Be sure to visit the catacombs.

This was one of our favorite churches in Porto because the informational guide that we received upon entrance was both really informative and succinct. We learned a lot about each major portion of the church using the guide, which had a helpful numbered map that directed us through.

a wonderful church in terms of architecture and history . The sculptural details on stone and wood will overwhelm anyone who comes for the first time. When I went down to the basement a cold air enveloped the whole space and I immediately thought of the tomb. Human bones are packed under each footstep

I’m dropping one star just because of the price. 9€ it’s quite pricey in my opinion, especially when you need to pay to enter any other touristy place. But the church it’s beautiful and very unique. I loved the inside and the catacombs.

I just recently found out that they have a catacomb in Porto, in the Church of Saint Francis to be exact so I decided to check it out. It was honestly better than I expected. We aren't allowed to take pictures inside the church so you're just gonna have to take my words for it: it was magnificent. The church has a lot of religious arts, a mixture of paintings and wooden sculptures. The church itself is also rich in history; once Napoleon turned it into a horse stable on his siege of Porto. Next to the church there's a museum with a catacomb underground. The catacomb is actually larger than I expected and well kept. Overall it's a 10€ well spent and I'd highly recommend you to visit!

(Translated by Google) 3.5 €. Shooting is prohibited on the altar. There are also sculptures of Nagasaki martyrs hung upside down near the golden altar, which is carved with gold leaf or painted with gold mud. The rose window above the entrance is large and beautiful. (Original) 3.5€。祭壇は撮影禁止です。木彫に金箔を貼った、または、金泥を塗った金色の祭壇のそばには、逆さ吊りにされた長崎の殉教者たちの彫刻もあります。入り口上の薔薇窓は大きく美しいです。

The San Francisco Church is the most impressive church I've ever been. It's the best carved wood samples all around the world. Don't miss the Jesus genealogy tree! And all the carved wood is covered by gold particles. Really amazing!

Pretty pricey for what it is, especially since they ask you not to take photos. The inside of the church is quite impressive with all the elaborate gold plated woodwork, but the museum is very limited and quite frankly plain boring.

The church, or rather, the "Igreja de São Francisco" is definitely a stop for the visit to Porto both because it is located in the Ribeira district, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but also, and above all, for the internal artistic treasures. Outside seems like an austere Gothic style but inside there is a riot of Portuguese baroque that covers the entire internal surfaces or some chapels, such as St. John the Baptist in Manueline style. Definitely worth a visit. The catacombs didn't excite me, but they are also worth a short visit

The church is beautiful. However, while I don’t usually comment on this, the washrooms are disgusting, probably the worst I’ve seen at a tourist attraction in Portugal. There is one female toilet for the entire church, imagine how many visitors on a daily basis there are. This one toilet is leaking water everywhere and cannot be flushed - so the floors are all flooded and visitors are using this toilet as a porter potty. Unfortunately I cannot help that the disgusting image that still exists in my head does taint the overall experience.

We briefly stopped by here on a walking tour. The wood carving works are very impressive and can be overwhelming. The main alter was being worked on and restored, and was covered by a tarp, so we were not able to see it. It is very beautiful.

One of the most beautiful interiors of a church that I’ve seen! Although it’s no longer a place of worship, the history is all there! The upgrading of the site continues, there is construction started in the chapel. Inevitable.

Really, really objected to the 8 Euro entrance charge, without concession that I could find for students, or locals, or people on lower wages. I do appreciate that there is work to be funded, but this is spinning towards price gouging.

Now deconsecrated, and with a museum (pictured) of religious artefacts alongside, the church’s interior is spectacularly carved and gilded (final photo). The catacombs are mostly from the 1850s-60s. You could spend a couple of hours here (we didn’t have time) 9euros entrance fee (2023).

A magnificent church. Entry is steep - €10 and I strongly advise you to get the guide brochure for another €1 - but well worth it. You also get entrance to Church of the Ordem Terceira de São Francisco and the Dispatch House of the Order (Casa de Despachos), which houses a museum and has an interesting Baroque interior. I spent over 90 minutes there. You aren't allowed to take photos, unusually, though I sneaked one of the Dispatch House. Take my word for it - it is stunning.

First off, I think this church is worth visiting. The woodwork inside is spectacular and richly detailed. There’s also a chapel with rich details as well, and there are catacombs. Note that this is no longer a working church, but a monument. He will not be able to take pictures inside the church itself. You can buy a nice guide for 1€.

A holi church, blessed place. Loved praying here. A huge church with a big historical building. I had to wait for the tickets for some time. The church from the inside is amazing, a lot of statues and portraits inside. The unique part I saw was the "tree of generations" w huge wall statue showing the generations of the old testament to Jesus.

Amazing church with museum and catacombs. For decoration was used 300kg of gold. Take time to visite. Its very near the bay with all bars so no big walk for lazy once. 8€ worth it.

  • 5/5 Alexandra D. 1 year ago on Google
The exterior combines baroque and gothic styles and the interior can be described as opulent to say the least; it is thought that there was at least 200kg of gold used; other sources saying there was almost 600kg used

  • 4/5 Gabriele S. 1 year ago on Google
One of the most famous churches in Porto. It certainly deserves to be visited, although the ticket price is a little too expensive (8€), given the fact that if you want a pamphlet with information about the place you must pay another 1€ and you can't take any pictures of the inside.

The magnificent church was originally built in the Baroque style in the 13th century, but was rebuilt in the 19th century due to a fire and the destruction of much of it.
