The only church in the diocese of Porto dedicated to S. José. Although not large, it is still beautiful, with beautiful gilded work. Next to each side altar is an elaborate school box dedicated to the respective saint.

(Translated by Google) The church of S. José das Taipas is located within the framework of the Clérigos church, Portuguese Photography Center, former prison of the Porto Relation, Fonte do Olival, Jardim da Cordoaria and Almeida Garrett's house. The place called “Taipas” refers to the fences that were built here in the 16th century because this area was attacked by plague. The fences isolated the sick and thus avoided contagion with the rest of the population. In neoclassical style, its construction began in 1795 and ended in 1878. The temple has a single nave with a barrel vault, supported by ten arches. The work is by Carlos Amarante, an architect and military engineer of neoclassicism, author of a vast work in northern Portugal. Of his authorship, the well-known monuments of Bom Jesus, Igreja do Pópulo and Igreja do Hospital de S. Marcos, located in Braga, stand out; the São Gonçalo Bridge over the River Tâmega, in Amarante; Ponte das Barcas, in Porto, (now disappeared); Rector of the University of Porto; Trindade Church, in Porto; Brejoeira Palace, in Monção.

Unfortunately, I found the Church of Almas de São José das Taipas closed during my visit, and this was a bit disappointing. However, from the outside, I could admire its impressive architecture, which dates back to the period between 1795 and 1878, following the project of the engineer Carla Cruz Amarante. This church is a masterpiece that combines interesting architectural elements, and I was struck by the majesty of its facade. Its history, dating back to 1666, adds a touch of charm and antiquity to the place. Although I didn't get to explore the interior, I was struck by its imposing presence and historical importance. I hope that next time I will have the opportunity to visit the Church of Almas de São José das Taipas and explore its rich heritage and architectural beauty from the inside.

As a non catholic person, I visit as many churches as possible when visiting Europe. The Igrejas de Sao Jose Das Taipas is located just down the street from Clerigos. This Neoclassical church was built between 1795 & and 1878, and besides the fact that it is historic and very peaceful, it contains some historic paintings, one of which is a painting commemorating the disaster of the Bridge of Boats, when napoleon troops entered Porto in 1809.
