We stayed in Chartres for a day on our way to Rennes and stopped there to see the Cathedral which is part of UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. We love Gothic cathedrals, and this is one of the most impressive cathedral we've seen. Surprisingly, It is a tad taller than Notre Dames in Paris. There has been extensive renovation work done in past 10 years and it is quite striking to compare between before and after renovation. When we came, the main entrance door was closed, probably because the mass was ongoing, but we were able to enter from the right side entrance. We were totally blown away by the beauty of the place, the statues both inside and out, the stain glasses and even more so by the wall of sculptures all around the choir. It took 200 years to complete it!!! I highly recommended to see the Cathedral if you travel by Chartres.

Our Lady of Chartres Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture! I was in awe of the endless stained glass and detailed art carvings throughout. This cathedral is well known for housing the relic that is believed to be of the Mother Mary's veil worn during the birth of Jesus. This history of this cathedral is incredibly impressive. It's tough to comprehend the endless hours invested into the creation of this magnificent artwork, including the years of renovation. I highly encourage you to make the pilgrimage to see this unbelievable cathedral in Chartres France!

Obviously the star in Chartres … generations have rebuilt this cathedral over and over again on this special spot … just allow yourself to be blasted away with the magnificent artwork you will see inside - small wonders of craftsmanship for centuries and centuries … if you come during the summer months you will be lucky to see some great light performance projected onto the cathedral - and on some other 10 sites in Chartres - starting when night falls and running until something like 1 am. Indeed to stroll around town (easily by foot no need for the tourist „train“) and suck in all these light shows and music performances that automatically start after sunset

Amazing building and I especially loved the intricate sculptures and stained glass windows. Plus it's free ( able to donate of course) lots of work needed and scaffold up. Some bits covered but of course these things need to be restored

Grand. Historical. Not crowded at all. May not been as famous as Notre Dame in Paris, but no less magnificent without all the hassles in the busy city. Watch out for Google directions though, it led us through a restricted pedestrian zone which was barred from outside traffic on tiny one lane streets. Thankfully the parking attendant pitied us and let us through but it was a nightmare. Be sure to map to cathedral parking instead of cathedral.

Beautiful structure: historic, big, and inviting. The community surrounding the Cathedral was welcoming. The village of Chartes is clean and inspiring...especially to a history buff. The evening light show on the front was breathtaking.

One of the most amazing experiences I had in France. The cathedral itself is amazing. So well restored after the fire it looks like how it first must have when built. The most amazing part however is the light show in the evening. This truly is a must see. Sensationally mind blowing.

Visited Chartres last week on a Tuesday afternoon. Our group enjoyed the stained glass windows, which were stunning! We spent a few hours walking around the grounds and the interior of the Cathedral. The standouts were the stained glass, gothic architecture, and the non-existent crowds. Compared to Paris, this felt like a secluded getaway where time could be spent enjoying the Cathedral without having so many others around (we noticed probably less than 10 other tourists). This is especially key given at this time in 2023 Notre Dame in Paris is not rebuilt and is not available for entry. Come to Chartres (pronounced ‘Shart’) and enjoy the same era or architectural brilliance up close. By the way, when mapping to Chartres, make sure to set your GPS to “Q-Park Cathedrale” and not the actual Chartres Cathedral. If you map directly to the Cathedral, your GPS might take you through the local streets some of which are very small with blocked-off access points without space for u-turns.

This is one of the best cathedrals for a day trip from Paris. The church and it's stained glass windows are very well preserved. I would strongly recommend anyone to rent the audio guide which was extremely detailed and the in-app videos and features definitely helped me to learn a lot about the history of chartres cathedral.

gorgeous cathedral known of course for the blue stained glass windows set in a beautiful town although our visit was marred by a demonstration on the streets from a group of anti-vaccine mandate people.

It's differently worth the visit with beautiful stained glass windows that are very hard to photograph. The story of Jesus in 40 Scripture scenes in great detailed the before through after his death on the cross. It was all pretty amazing and how they saved the stained glass windows during WW2 for the Cathedral. Now, you can view them for yourselves. Enjoy the Cathedral while you're in Chartres!

Very impressive church built in 13th century. The city itself is not big, but very cozy and authentic.

A magnificent Gothic cathedral. Easy to get to by train from Paris. Worth a visit to admire the architecture and after looking around the cathedral, the city is great to meander around and enjoy one of the many cafés, restaurant's and shops.

A must see when in Chartres, during the day or after darkness when a light show uses the cathedral front as it's screen. It was nice to see the renovation of the interior which makes it look bright and airy inside, work ongoing. Don't miss it when in this beautiful French city

Beautiful Gothic cathedral with amazing stained windows. The old town is nicely preserved despite all the tourist attractions. Glad we were there.

The most enormous cathedral in France. It is worth visiting. There are amusing windows, a tour on top of the roof, and to the belfry.

Die Kathedrale ist beeindruckend, weil man hier den Anfang der Gotischen Bauweise sehen kann. Massive Strebepfeiler in kurzen Abständen. Mich nicht so filigran wie zum Beispiel in Notre Dame. Die Fenster mit dem Chartresblau einmalig. Die Stadt ist mittelmäßig was die Architektur angeht. Für einen Zwischenstopp gut.

It is an astonishing piece of architecture. The facade is extremely detailed and meticulously crafted. The inside stained glass windows are breathtaking. Each and every one is different. This place is definitely a must visit if you are in the region.

Chartres is a few kilometers away from Paris and is a place to visit absolutely, the recently restored Cathedral is splendid. In my opinion together with that of Seville and the Duomo of Milan they are the best I have visited in Europe. Gothic reigns, the stained glass windows and the choir are of absolute importance and finally, don't forget the 12th century Labyrinth which represents a continuous 261.5 m long path that goes from the outside to the inside of the circle, with a succession of curves and arches of concentric circles.

Amazing cathedral with beautiful colorful windows If you pay attention to details you will notice the immense maze on the floor quite entirely hidden by the benches. You could buy ticket for guided tour of cathedral tower. During the night there is a great facade light show. Different from Rouen show that is quite off topic and inappropriate this Chartres show is very well done highlighting the architecture of the facade with colorful scenes

Awesome don't go to Chars from Paris inside joke. Great small town Chatres would love to stay there. Beautiful Catherdral. Again scaffolding. But go in and walk past it and you will be wowed.

Well worth a visit. The restoration inside is magnificent, you feel like you're seeing as people would have done many hundreds of years ago. Don't miss the light show in the evening!

This is the most amazing place I've ever visited. I love everything about the cathedral, and I wish I could have spent the entire day there. Because it was incredible from start to finish. Beautiful stained glass (most of it original!) and sculptures covering every part of the building itself. And all of it designed to tell a story. There's so much history in this building - I can't believe there's been a church on that location since the 800s, and that the current cathedral pre-dates Notre Dame in Paris! We got a tour with Malcom Miller, who is incredibly knowledgeable about the cathedral, and I learned so much. If I'm lucky maybe I'll be able to go back again someday. But if you have the chance to see this cathedral you should definitely take it. It's worth it.

Really nice place to visit, just a couple of hours from Paris. The cathedral is at the top of a little hill, so it's just so beautiful to see it from anywhere in the city. A great idea for a little weekend trip!

I lived in Chartres for three months right before COVID and the Cathedral was just steps away from my apartment. The building is beautiful and there is a souvenir shop and many great restaurants just in front of the Cathedral.

This cathedral is a must see! On a sunny day, the stained-glass windows shine with magical colour, the secret of which has not been revealed so far, and the magnificent sculptures describe in detail the life of the holy family and Christ.

Chartres Cathedral, carvings on the northern transept, 1205-1210. It represents the Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven, surrounded by Biblical kings and prophets. The cathedral itself is recognised as one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture.

What an amazing experience! An amazing cathedral. The love everything was built with on and in this unique monument, is breathtaking! It is really astonishing how people managed to create such wonders centuries ago and with what tools? When visiting France, visiting Chartres just for its cathedral is a must! Unbelievable! ❤️

This amazing cathedral is amazing. Do not miss this, and get a guide to point out all the little details. Those site also displays the scarf the was worn by Mary during the birth of Jesus.

Magnifique cathédrale dans une ville sympathique à 1h30 de Paris. Beautiful cathedral about 1h30 from Paris. The stained glass windows are stunning. Lots of renovation work has been done and the cathedral’s interiors are beaming white !

Impressive building in a pretty town. While Chartres is not as beautiful as some other French cities it nevertheless presents a very unique and homogenous center. The cathedral dominates the view. It’s surroundings are very touristic, so try to move away from it to get some food.
