Terrible establishment. Avoid.. 4 of us walked into the garden to be met by an individual who asked "Have you booked". We said "no" and were told "well in that case your not able to purchase any food....." I don't mind being told the chef needs a break but we arrived at 3pm as their website said "food all day" to a nearly empty establishment and when I asked "why" I was told " you can't order food as we are at capacity"... Complete rubbish.... We were surprised as it was a Saturday on a hot sunny September afternoon and the garden was completely empty... So we went inside to buy some drinks we expected to see the pub filled with tables of customers eating, so I asked the person behind the bar to confirm the reason why we weren't able to order food as no one was "overloading the restaurant " and for the 2nd time instead of just saying "we've got no-one to cook" the manager of the day decided to double down with a incredibly stupid response "we are fully booked later"... So we purchased a drink and left. Reckon their staff just couldn't be bothered to work...

We took a lovely walk across the fields, sticking to the public foot paths and planed this pub at about the halfway point. We had a shared ploughman's and some wine. The service was good the staff helpful and the weather perfect. We finished are wine sat in the garden, that over looks the river. Then coffee before a very enjoyable walk back home. All in all a perfectly enjoyable day

Fantastic pub, good old building, nice location. Beer garden out front, fires inside in the winter. The staff are very personable and warm. I've eaten here several times and its been consistently good Ignore old reviews, this place has changed hands and been refurbished, my wife and i first came here shortly after that in late 2022. Theres a walk down to the seven estuary i have been meaning to do which starts more or less at the pub, so you can really make a Sunday of it

Sat in beautiful garden and had shared ploughman's and pork belly, all delicious. Staff very friendly. You do have to book to eat, not quite sure why as they didn't seem too busy. But the food was delicious!

Nice pub, winter log fire. Menu a bit bland. Expensive drinks.

Lovely pub, open fires, cosy. Fab location with beautiful garden for the summer. Food good but overpriced. Limited choice on menu - no fish other than basic fish and chips. I had mushroom risotto, it was very tasty but looked bland and grey. It needed colour, something green, just simple peas would have done the trick. And the wine was outrageously priced. Basic Merlot at £25 !!!

The White Hart has long been my favourite pub in the area. It straddles the line between pub and restaurant beautifully, with attentive and friendly table service, and excellent food, super cosy dining rooms and open fires.

Walked from Thornbury twice recently to this pub and on both occasions were turned away as we hadn't booked. Website quotes "walk in's" are catered for by reserved tables. Not the case! Will not be attempting a third visit, booked or otherwise.

A gem of pub, set in beautiful countryside with lovely garden . Staff very helpful and friendly. Food and drink very good. Sat outside and had a nice lunch. Fairly busy but plenty of room between tables. Would recommend.

Had a works Christmas Lunch here today from the 'Christmas Feast' Menu. The Venison Croquette starter was lovely and arrived hot which was good, the dessert of Spiced Bakewell was delish ...but the Sirloin/Beef on the Xmas dinner was a real let down I'm sorry to say. Very chewy, over cooked and a strip of tough sinuet running all through the middle! Very disappointing as the rest of the food on the plate was nice. But the main star of the dish was probably one of the worst bits of beef/sirloin I've tasted. A real shame as I wanted to rave about this place. Wont rush back for the meat there. In reply to the 'Response from the Owner' below - I advised on exit of the premises as it was a work's Xmas lunch, paid for by my works, I did not want to cause any issue as they where all happy with their meals, i was the only one to have beef. Besides which, surely in the grand scheme of things it does not matter when you got told, the point is you DO get told at some point. Plus, ANY Chef worth their weight in gold would have known definitely NOT to have sent out meat like that anyway!!!???

Lovely Sunday roast. Great flavour in the beef. Really nice staff who are very good covering allergies. No problem with adapting for gluten and dairy free. They even do gf gravy!

Lovely Pub, with great staff. Also Dog friendly. We came as a family and had a roast dinner. The beef was delicious and the horseradish sauce was like lava! Awesome. Would definitely recommend.

Very unwelcoming pub. Walked in alone on Sunday looking for some lunch (having taken a detour off a very busy M4 specifically to visit this establishment based on its proximity to the motorway and its positive reviews) - and was told they were fully booked. I asked if I could sit at the bar and eat (even just a sandwich) and was advised (rather curtly) that this was "simply not possible". Very bizarre rules indeed. Understand completely that a walk in is always a risk (especially on a Sunday) but would suggest that politeness costs nothing and that messages could be delivered in a friendlier way. Can't comment on the food (obviously) although what I saw being carried to tables looked good.

Food was well presented and tasty. Nice Gem of a hidden location but lovely pub in rural spot. Sit outside on a nice day and enjoy the piece full country views. Would go again. Definitely.

I have been today with some friends and we had really nice time. Sunday roast was really good, although the Camembert and the brownie were the stars. The staff was great too.

We had booked for outside and it had been raining. But it was still worth it. Staff very helpful and food was delicious. The views are pretty too. Will be back again and would recommend.

A really lovely pub with a great garden. The location is fantastic! The food was good, nothing out of this world but the atmosphere makes up for it! The place was quite busy but we had booked and had no problem with a little bit of a wait for our food. Our main waitress was so friendly and really helpful and polite, another one we spoke to not so much but it wouldn’t stop us coming back again :)

Lovely 400 yr old building and good garden all in nice countryside. Staff were very helpful and friendly. The only problem is whoever is running the place is more concerned with margins than repeat custom. A small burger and chips is £16, no side salad, coleslaw or anything like that, tasted fine but very basic and frankly a rip-off. We had two burger and chips, pint of orange juice and soda, half a lager, 2 deserts and 2 coffees which came to £58.75. 2 expensive, won't be going back unfortuanely.

Wonderful genuine olde world English pub. Beautiful building with a great garden to the front. There would be amazing views over the Severn estuary to Wales if the hedge over the road was cut. You can see then right up to the point that you sit down. Great, friendly staff and an ideal location, just 15 minutes from North Bristol means that we will be regulars!

Lovely authentic old English pub in a quiet setting. We only had sandwiches but they were fresh and tasty. The staff member was friendly and efficient.

A very disheartening and disappointing Christmas day experience. On arrival we were sent into the small area/ room of which there was no lit fire, it was very cold and lacked any Christmas atmosphere. No music. There was a TV which had a picture of a fire burning above the none lit coal burning fire. My fingers were actually numb. We waited 25 minutes before we were offered any drinks and another 45 minutes before the cold starters arrived and this was after we prompted the waitress several times because we had been waiting over 35 minutes for the starters to arrive. The young waitress who served us was passively aggressive, stressed and rude. We noticed that later on she put her coat on and walked out of the restaurant finishing her shift early. This was just after she told us we would have to wait 10 minutes to speak to the manager. When we spoke to the manager he explained to us that two of the chefs hadn’t turned in for the day he was very smiley and offered us compensation for our drinks. He promised us the dinner would be out in 5 minutes we waited a further 25! We arrived at the restaurant at 13:00 and our Christmas dinners came out at 14:45. They were none edible. No pigs in blankets, hard Brussels sprouts, tough meat, cold Yorkshire's. There were several other people in our area who were unhappy with the food and service and there was a table opposite where two ladies waited over an hour and a half for their starters. When they were eventually brought out they were the wrong orders. Some of my party had driven over an hour to get to the destination today. We left halfway through our Christmas dinners and did not have dessert. This is a disorganised un atmospheric, poorly run Christmas day venue, that serves cold tasteless food at £106 per head.

Shocking service.communication - non-existent . Food cold and inedible. Staff were mixing up orders. And we were told 2 chefs had not come, plus we had got forgotten. No heating. No atmosphere. No music. Staff clearly did not want to be there. Extremely overpriced! I would rate this whole Christmas Day experience with a zero.

  • 1/5 Kai H. 4 months ago on Google
While I rarely leave reviews, our Christmas Day meal was an unfortunate disappointment. The wait for our mains was close to two hours, and when they arrived, the excessive salt made them inedible. Sadly, it wasn't just our table; nearby diners faced similar issues, meaning they already knew the food was not suitable and still decided to serve us the same 10 minutes later. The only silver lining was the attentive and apologetic staff who promptly acknowledged the need for a refund. I've been a patron of this pub for almost two decades and have previously enjoyed fantastic food and service. It's puzzling how things went so awry despite advance notice of numbers and meal choices for Christmas Day. If unable to manage on such occasions, perhaps offering this service isn't viable especially when charging over £100 per head. Hoping for a return to the usual standard on our next visit, where I can swap this review for a more positive one.

All five of us had a fantastic time on Christmas Day. A very relaxed lunch - great service, as usual. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Very much recommend The White Hart to friends and family. We will be back!

Just had a wonderful festive meal for 18 people, friends and children. The food all came out warm and tasty and the staff couldn't have been more welcoming and attentive, particularly Michelle. Highly recommended this cosy pub in both warm and cooler times of year.

Disappointing. Very, very long wait for meal. When the roast dinner finally came there were no green vegetables and a tiny portion of other vegetables. Roast potatoes were rock hard. A tiny jug of gravy was left for two people ... when asked for more gravy it was supplied but was very thin and watery. During the long wait we were frequently approached by staff asking if we wanted more drinks ... it felt like a hard sell of alcoholic drinks to take our minds off the hunger pangs. Fully expected some kind of reduction in the bill for the poor experience but all we had were perfunctory apologies for the unacceptable wait.

Went here today as part of a group booking. Aside from the general confusion over our booking (table not ready, gave us menus for a pre'ordered meal) the meal I had was very sub par and expensive for what I received. Roast Beef was undercooked to the extent that it was hard to cut, chewy and barely digestible. 😫. Clearly the wrong cut of beef had been used for offering up a rare Roast Beef! Not that I was even asked how I wanted it cooked! Staff were friendly and helpful, but poor meal..

Lovely setting, however over priced food. Gone off spinach in salad, small burger could have gotten better in McDonald's for fraction of price and a half warm shepherds pie. Disappointed ? when you eat out and pay premium price you expect it to be better then what you can cook at home! On this occasion sadly not. Good place for a drink with nice garden.

Delicious Friday Dinner. My son and I popped, in as a last minute decision, to celebrate the end of a very busy week. The new owners are lovely, really really welcoming. The menu has a great balance of traditional favourites, vegetarian and vegan options. My son had the flat iron steak, I had the braised ox cheek. WOW. It was one of the best meals out we have had. Easy to book on line. Totally recommend you visit. We will most definitely be back. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Please don't go there save yourself the disappointment the food is not fit for a dog let alone human consumption

Food, wine and initial service was good. Nice meals, punctual and attentive service. Handed over to alternative waiting staff ruined the experience. Blunt, inattentive to the point of them being visibly irritated by my request for some water. We did nothing to warrant this. Having been coming here for years never experienced anything like it ???

Nice village pub. . Good size car park and some outdoor seating. Good welcome from behind the bar. Decided to eat, menu was ok but not brilliant for us. Might suit other customers very well. Food was a tad expensive but very nice. Burgers were served on slate plates which looked nice but was a bit impractical. Chips everywhere but on the plate.! Nevertheless, lovely ambience and friendly service.

Good food and a good choice of cask ales. Only missed out on the fifth star as despite being asked if we wanted to see dessert menus none were supplied and it then took a considerable period of time before our dessert order was taken. Still, we enjoyed our Sunday lunch and will be back again.

Wonderful post lockdown lunch We had an excellent lunch on 21/07/20 - a day after the pub reopened after lockdown. The staff were marvellous and every possible social distancing and sanitising requirement were observed. The fish and chips were fantastic - huge slabs of wonderfully crispy cod with double cooked chips and fresh tartare sauce and the mussels were to die for - sensational! You MUST try and eat here - a great experience all round - despite the very onerous and long winded app needed to order!
