If you are visiting Mount Vernon this is a definite must to visit. It is included in the price of admission to Mount Vernon, you just hop on their complementary bus that takes you straight there. The people there are friendly and knowledgeable about their Mill and about the products that they produce. It is rebuilt in the style that George Washington built it in and it is a working mill now. There is also a small shop that carries all kinds of goodies if you would like something. I would highly recommend spending an hour or so of your time at Mount Vernon by stopping by here and seeing the Mill and little museum they have.

Since our Mount Vernon tickets included entrance to the mill and distillery (3 miles from Mount Vernon; you can drive on your own or take the Mount Vernon courtesy shuttle), we drove over to the distillery arriving at 4:45. The mill tour guide said they would give the last tour right up until 5:00pm. Our tour started at 4:55 and only lasted 10 min, but we got to see the mill in operation and had a good explanation of its history and how it operates. The guide said they only give demonstrations on weekends. We walked as a group to the distillery and the guide was waiting for us even though it was after 5pm (5:07). He gave us a great description of the distilling process and the history of the distillery.

Really cool to see. While not the original building it was built actually and works. You'll get to see it in action in the mill, then walk over to the distillery and see their working set up.

Entry is included with Mount Vernon ticket. The grist mill is an amazing display of the ingenuity and industrious nature of our forefathers. The distillery is not as physically impressive, but the import of it conveys an amazing example of the progressive nature of Washington. Mount Vernon is a must see for every American.

We rushed to this place as we had some a lot of time at Mount Vernon. We did make it in time to be part of the last group. The tour guides were even more better than Mount Vernon. Maybe we were the last group - they really were chatty, answered all our questions patiently and boy they were informative. About the distillery itself - we have to a give a lot of credit to the Scotsman James Anderson who actually made it possible and created value through the whole enterprise that he under took. Again, the place was beautiful and less strenuous on this hot summer day 😍

When in the Mt. Vernon area, you should take the time to visit the George Washington’s Distillery & Grist Mill. It’s a wonderful spot to walk around, or even have a picnic. The buildings will open in April with actors in period costumes bringing the history to life. The history & distillery information is really interesting! Be sure to check out the unique gifts available in their gift shops too. After visiting here, jump on the free shuttle to Mt. Vernon.

This was the best part of Mount Vernon! I've never seen an actual working gristmill and it was fascinating. Tour guides were very knowledgeable, willing to talk for ages, and extremely down to earth. A great experience!

Pretty disappointed with the whiskey tasting and the value for the money. I cannot recommend this in good faith. See below for details. We purchased tickets for whiskey tasting at $60 per ticket. Upon arrival, one of the guides instructed us that we could pick 3 of the 6 tastings and that we should all get 3 different ones and the share IN A PANDEMIC! So they want you to wear a mask, and then share tasting cups?!?!?!? The tasters are extremely small, and they fill them with 0.5 oz of liquor, so for $60 you get 1.5 oz of liquor. That being said, the 4 year old whiskey was nice, the not aged one was a bit rough, and the rum was forgettable, no rum taste, just smoke. Lastly, a bottle of the 4 year old whiskey is $225, the rum was …. wait for it $335.

Great historical site. Area that makes whiskey and grinds the flour sold in the store on site. Enjoyed whiskey tasting on the grounds.

This place is included if you pay for a ticket for the Mansion. It was very cool to see an interactive experience with the mill. The tour guide was great with my kids and so entertaining.

An interesting place to visit especially if you are into history. They have whiskey available for purchase. Most folks miss the mill when visiting Mt Vernon. Don't. This is worth the time.

One of the most wonderful historic sites around. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and engaging and we were able to see wheat get processed into flour by the local water powered mill.

Very interesting look at the business side of George Washington. Very informative guides at the grist mill and distillery. We accidentally went through “backwards”. Make sure you go to the grist mill first for the best experience.

Very informative. Well done presentation. Would have gotten 5 stars if there had been a tasting. We would have been glad to pay, but we're disappointed to have come from Florida and not been able to pay to taste.

Very cool place to learn about the art of whiskey making during the 17th century. They also have Master Craftsmen come in and help make the whiskey the way it was made then.

They do ship spirits from VABC #235 to Virginia and Washington D.C. even after the spirits are out of stock in stores. They are only open to the public in summer and fall, and produce year-round spirits in winter and spring. Definitely worth the visit!

Let me start off by saying. Good job mount Vernon. We have their membership and they never fail to bring back a accurate recreation of the colonial times. The mill actually moves!

So very cool to actually see a working mill and distillery from the era. Both guides were awesome and knowledgeable. Seems like Mt. Vernon probably doesn't advertise this place enough as there was no one there except us and 2 other people. I'm ok with that, but the throngs of people up at the manor should probably visit here too.

Disappointed that we were not able to try samples of the booze. I thought this would have a restaurant attached. But the guides were very informative

The operation of the gristmill inside is worth the ten minute wait between tours. Beautiful scenery and improves your appreciation for the distilling process, and the pricetag of the spirits being sold. My only complaint was the willingness of the guides to answer numerous questions before they started the tour, which led to a ridiculous amount of Mt Vernon questions from those that hadn't made it to the mansion yet... Folks- do the mansion tour first, your curiosity will be answered, and then those questions won't delay the rest of us who came to see the gristmill.

A quick tour through a living example if George Washington the business man. It in addition to a working gristmill with an interior water wheel. There is a legal 18th Century distillery (replica) that runs whisky twice a year. You can buy the whiskey, grits and cornmeal in the gift shop. (Books, t-shirts, ornaments and more).

Boring and so is Mount Vernon a whole lot of nothing . I go to Washington DC that's a whole lot better and Free more to see as well. I would never waste my time or money at Mount Vernon.

We had a private tour of the Gristmill. It has been completely restored and is on the original Dogue Creek location. A working operation still produces milling flour and whiskey for sale. Same as General Washington did in his day.

A must see when in town! Mt Vernon and the distillery are an all day activity. For a different perspective take the boat ride on the river. Don't leave without eating at the restaurant and make sure you grab pancake mix and corn meal to take home.
