Am amazing place to visit! We spent a couple of hours here (children aged 7 and 4). They have multiple 'treasure hunts' set up around the museum keeping the children interested as we went around. The gardens are beautiful and the Toys Through Time exhibition is fantastic!

I visited this museum as I kept walking past it most days and always wondered what it was like inside. Turns out that it is a wonderful little place that explains a lot about the culture and industry of the city. Upstairs is dedicated to the regiment of Leicestershire and explains a lot about them. I also saw the temporary display about the Blitz of Leicester, which was my second favourite part of the museum. The garden is worth visiting as it is so relaxing to sit outside with all of the nature. As someone who enjoys photographing plants and animals, I made sure to take a look. Overall, this museum is a fun few hours for either the locals or visiters to the city.

Absolutely brilliant, and free! Medium size museum. Lots to take in, lots of great exhibits and real life displays, for free. Definitely a must do visiting Leicester. Staff are amazing too, very knowledgeable, friendly and approachable. Did I mention it was free!

Excellent free museum. One of the best around and one to visit it coming to Leicester. The World war section is just the best.

A great free museum. A little walk from the main city centre but well worth it. A great collection of exhibits including the story of the royal Leicestershire regiment. Really enjoyed the WW1 trench and the old Street with shops. Something for everyone.

This was a nice place to visit with an eclectic collection of things to see from Leicester's past. From toys to collections of donated war medals and stories, every room held my attention. I wasn't ready for the replica 1950s street in the middle of it though, done really well and makes you pause in surprise. It's child friendly, free(you can donate to support them), has toilets and a very nice garden to enjoy.

We've visited here quite a few times. This is a lovely historical place, and it has a lovely garden to just sit down and relax as well. Worth a visit in spring or summer! Good to visit with children, they offer activity sheets at the entrance so to engage with the museum's information. Not just for children, teenagers and adults too. They have a whole street ww2 representation with interactive shops, where you can enter and listen to the conversations during the war. There is a little tunnel trench where you can check where soldiers would stay and hear the sounds of artillery. It's not very loud so children should be fine to go through. They also have public toilets, tho very easy to miss them be sure to ask if unsure where they are located. The gift shop is very limited but it has the same as other museums in Leicester. You can easy spend an hour, hour and a half in there to see everything and take in all the information. Very educational.

Visited the Newark Houses Museum recently and had a fantastic experience! The staff was incredibly welcoming and helpful, making the visit even more enjoyable. The museum itself is truly impressive with its extensive collection and informative displays. I was amazed by the variety of exhibits that showcased the rich history of the area. The attention to detail in each section was evident, and it's clear that a lot of effort has been put into creating an engaging and educational experience for visitors. Kudos to the staff for their warm hospitality and to the museum for providing such a well-curated and extensive journey through history. Highly recommend a visit to anyone curious about the past and eager to explore the local heritage!

What an unexpected surprise! I visited this museum for no other reason than my friend wanted to see "the big chair" and was amazed at the range of displays and the size of the museum. The chap on the welcome desk was very friendly and helpful as were the other members of staff we spoke to. Very well presented information on a range of topics and historical time periods and best of all, free entry! Out of all of the museums available, it isn't one that I initially would have thought to visit but I'm glad I did!

A hidden gem opposite De Montfort University and only a 10min walk from Leicester City Centre. Highly recommended - gives a history of the trades and companies that used to be in the city, the Ugandan immigration story, and the military connections incl. a mock-up of a WW1 trench.

Good museum with a variety of things to see. Easily spend an hour looking around all the rooms and gardens. Kept the kids entertained, and it's free entry unless it's an event day.

Fab gem of a museum, fake shops, a trench to walk through, little gardens, lots of bits of info about the history of Leicester, always got a trail on for the kids and the sprawling building is fun to explore. And all for free!

Always enjoy taking our girls (aged 8 & 11) here to the many activities organised throughout the year. They love exploring the various rooms with the displays, dressing up in the uniforms, and playing with the toys in the toys and games room.

If you visit a new city you want to learn its history. While this is not the main museum of Leicester, you get a glimpse of Leicester past, including cobbled street and tradional pub. I won't mention the exhibitions as that's on the website. Friendly staff will open boxes of extra artefacts to show you if there is too little space to display them. Leicester is positively impacted by a large community who immigrated in 1972 and its exhibition is unique in the UK.

I've been here before and enjoyed it in the past. Today I came here as a group with quite a few children and my friends. Anyways the young children were quite excited to see many stuff around the museum. My overall view of the museum wasn't great today... staff that are unsure how to crack a smile. I felt quite unwelcome by the staff from the very beginning of entry. This place had a lack of a child-friendly feeling compared to New Walk. Anyways I respect children were quite loud at some stages and there were many other kids running about too that I didn't even know. I found it quite rude when the museum lady shouted up the stairs to me like 'can you guys keep the noise down, other visitors are complaining' and other museum lady saying 'There's a monster in here be quiet' ... like OK. I'm sorry but we are visitors ourselves and although sometimes kids can be quite noisy, what do you expect in public places also? At the end of the day we could just keep the children on Ipads at home but thought we take them out. Also visitors keeps them in a job. One lady in the old toy room didn't look like she wanted to be there and I felt a negative vibe in there when I was looking. The gardens that lead to the other gardens were great and we explored that and also went on a walk near Castle Motto, near St. Mary's and other surrounding areas.the building is an interesting history. It is an interesting area in that part of Leicester.

A great way to spend a rainy Saturday. Staff were super helpful and even helped my 8 year old daughter find the missing painting on her picture trail. They couldn't have been kinder to her, one lady showed her the interactive lullabies. Even though this museaum is compact there is lots to see, probably more so than New Walk, which has a bigger space. I think youd need at least 2 and half hours to really absorb everything. Thank you

Always like local history so would have liked more about what it was like in Leicester during industrial times and what the economy depends upon now. Good room about Uganda immigration but surely there's a lot more about immigration and how it's moulded the city

Very interesting museum with hidden gem of gardens, yet only 10 minutes walk from bustling city centre. Congratulations to staff and museum for making premises as disabled friendly as possible, very difficult in an old building. Helpful staff.

We visited to view the Snowman and the Snowdog exhibition. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The other elements of the museum were enjoyed briefly while we found our way between the desired exhibition and the toilets. As time didn't allow us to take these in we vowed to return as it looked to be a great place to understand how people used to live and the things they would see. The museum is free to enter and easy to park on the street outside for a reasonable cost.

Love this museum as it covers the history of life in Leicester in recent centuries including during WW1 and WW2. It is housed in a number of houses with a shared garden. Lovely seeing the original interior of these houses including impressive woodwork, stained glass, stairs and fireplaces. Highly rexommended. It’s free and open weekends.

A brilliant place. So much fascinating stuff in there. Amazing exhibits. We spent an absorbing couple of hours in the museum and need to go back again as there is so much to take in. We also visited the garden which was a beautiful haven of peace. Top place and very highly recommended!

Interesting traditional style museum. Lots of levels but a lift to all of them. Hasn't changed a lot over the years. Lots of school children having fun during term time. Although interesting feels like an old way of displaying things now.

It's very evident that the staff genuinely care about the history. There's an old little street with old shop fronts and a pub you can enter, a fabric shop, a mini cinema, the trench upstairs. You really are drawn into all these little worlds through time. The gardens are lovely as well.

I used to visit here quite often as a child in the 1970's. This visit was my first since then for 'Ghost Walk' on Halloween. I can't wait to go back to see all the refurbishments that happened in the 2000's. However the Ghost Walk was a disappointment. We were shown around the museum for just under an hour in the dark, we were offered torches. We were in a group of perhaps 25 people. We were told alleged ghost sightings in the museum over the years and the local Leicester area by a lovely lady. Unfortunately her stories didn't flow or really keep your interest. Were were followed around by someone in fancy dress holding a sickle, I think that was to add some drama into the evening. After the tour of some of the museum we were taken outside and around Newarke houses for some more ghost stories/alleged ghost sightings. A bit of history was interesting but the ghost story but was naff.
