Arguably one of, if not the best sushi place in Raleigh/Durham. Had I not heard about it, I would have never walked in. No offence to them but they took over what was previously a Subway that is actually connected to a gas station. They don’t serve alcohol (at least not yet), so you walk through their door into the gas station and buy your beers there…$3 a 22oz Heineken!? Their fish is the freshest and highest quality I have had in many moons. You can taste each ingredient, versus the burrito sushi rolls we are all accustomed to where the rolls have an overall flavor but you’d never really be able to speak to its parts. You can get all the classics but also a number of unique concoctions that will not disappoint. The pictures should tell you all you need to know. They serve real wasabi which I have only encountered a handful of times in my life and when I did, you paid extra for it. As a note, 99% of sushi places serve dyed white horseradish opposed true green Japanese horseradish. Japanese horseradish is less nasal, being more smooth and complex in flavor. In any event, their dining room is small, so you may have to wait, especially as the word continues to get out, so you may want to call ahead. Lastly, the staff were very kind and engaging. I’ll be back and very soon!

This was a very interesting experience. The restaurant itself is hidden away on the back of a gas station. However, the inside is very lovely and not at all gas-station-like. It is a very small restaurant so it might be hard to get a table at busy hours. I went with my sister and brother in law at lunch time and there was exactly one waiter and one sushi chef in the whole restaurant. Therefore the service was very slow. It took about 75 minutes for us to eat lunch. We saw the waiter running around like crazy trying to serve the entire restaurant by himself. The sushi was absolutely gorgeous and very delicious. Don't go here if you are in a hurry, but do go if you are not in a hurry. The bathroom is shared with the gas station and the restaurant has little flags above the door to the bathroom which kept hitting me in the head. Overall a nice experience.

I felt compelled to share this hidden gem. If you haven’t already tried Akami Sushi Bar yet… do yourself a favor! Yeah, it’s the old Subway connected to BP. However, don’t judge a book by its cover. It literally just became our GO-TO sushi spot! Plus and best of all, you’re supporting local!

This sushi tastes great and is well presented. Now listen I also had my reservations about going here since the location is on the back of a gas station, but I was wrong. You need to go here and try this place out. This is my new goto sushi place. It's only got a few tables inside so come early if your coming during a busy night.

I do like sushi but I’m not terribly sophisticated about it. Ok, I’m a simpleton. I love rolls. I read a story about how this place started and knew I had to try it. Gas station sushi. I’m in. I got the VooDoo roll and the Dragon roll. Both tasty and huge. Our table also ordered the Ocean Delight. 🤯 It was mind blowing. Great flavors and original. Never had anything like it. Please try this place. Everyone here is so friendly.

Amazing sushi. Very fresh, excellent customer service, online ordering was easy. We got spider roll, California roll, eel roll, and spicy salmon and every one was perfect. Even the ginger and wasabi taste fresh. Stopped in the first place because sushi restaurant attached to a gas station?? Will return because it’s the best around

Omg. So happy we finally went here! We kept hearing great things about this sushi place attached to the gas station. It's small, yet cozy. The people who work there are super friendly. Everything was amazing! We would have ordered more if we weren't so full. We will definitely be back.

I had second thoughts whenever I first rolled up to this place cuz it was located at a gas station. But it turns out this is the best sushi I've had in quite a long time. I travel a lot and it so happens that sushi is one of my favorite foods. So it pleases me to say that this is one of the best restaurants to go to. Why? I'm glad you asked. Sure, it's expensive but that price is remedied with the amount of quality, love and precision that is put into the craftsmanship is put into the sushi. I just wish I had this closer to my house I'd probably go here once a week.

Best sushi in North Carolina. Seriously. The. Best. Rolls. You can make reservations online. Staff is top notch. Very small space and don't let the fact that it's attached to a gas station scare you off.

Amazing sushi, both traditional & specialty rolls available! Beer, wine, and sake available. Prices are good and won't break the bank. Great place to go to for lunch and a few beers after a long week!

Hands down the best sushi place in the state. Highest quality fresh fish around, a whole different league from any other place. Great place with some real spirit, the owner is an absolute delight. I cannot overstate how wonderful this sushi bar is. An absolute must try location, nothing compares.

This Subway turned Sushi chic is truly a hidden gem. I’ve now been here in several times and can say they are consistently amazing. The owner, Bird is personable and super friendly. His staff makes sure you’re well taken care of and their service is fantastic. The decor in here is done well even with it being built into a gas station. Wanna know how good the 🍣🍱 is? The regulars that come here have a special shelf and casing where their personal chop sticks are kept. 🤯 The fish is as good and as fresh as any high end sushi spot in the area. The rolls are works of art and you can tell all the ingredients in each one were well thought out to compliment one another and the final flavor of the roll. I’m excited to try the Omakase dinner they have. If you haven’t tried Gas Station Sushi, there’s no time like the present.

Was in Cary for a week and we were really craving sushi. Thank goodness we stumbled on Akami! We made a reservation, highly recommend as there is limited seating inside, and the food was incredible. This is easily the best Japanese food in the area for miles. We recommend the scorched Salmon so so so much! Also, the family liked this place enough that we all got matching t-shirts!

I knew this place would be great when I saw the sushi chef carry a fresh 2ft fish from the kitchen to his cutting board. If you haven’t been to the “Gas Station Sushi” yet you’re missing out just like we did for so long. Glad to have finally experienced it. Our waitress suggested the Sake Belly to kick off our meal and it was so good. Unlike anything you can get around here. We ended up getting 3 other roles and it was enough dinner for the two of us. Most places we get BOGO rolls. Not here. The amount of fish in these rolls. You can’t eat 2 like you can in other nearby Apex/Cary spots. This place is legit. Can’t wait to go back. Small dining room and super friendly staff make it feel like the hidden gem that it is. I didn’t want to review it so it can remain a secret but they deserve the accolades!

Best Sushi in the entire area!!!! Thumbs up to the Chef & Crew!!!! Tastes that boomed from all angles. Sweet, sour, salty. No other Sushi restaurant in town can compare to Gas Station Sushi. This Chef has true talent & experience.

It was our first time this evening, so we couldn't help but order too much! The food was amazingly fresh, generously portioned and artistically presented. Kudos to this Sushi Chef, he's already outgrown his new little place 👌

Truly a hole in the wall best of the bests. While thier starter name was not this, they have embraced it as the locals now call it. Gas Station Sushi is amazing. Well at least this Gas Staion Sushi. For sure no worries on questionable food selection here. Great service and food. If you want a guaranteed seat, better get there at 5 when they open.

First timers and we cannot wait to go back! Arrived at 5 and were seated immediately. Very friendly and helpful waitstaff. Wait time for food was perfect. Decor was very nice, though hope someday they move to larger environs. Music was appropriate for a sushi restaurant and glad they weren’t playing top 40 type music. Shrimp shumai and miso soup were excellent renditions. South Beach roll is a must. The premier sashimi plate was top notch and worth every penny. This is the place to go….M Sushi is good but Akami is better. Love it!

Surprisingly spectacular sushi bar adjacent to a gas station. We tried the Ocean Delight, Voodoo, Philly, and Spicey Tuna rolls and all were amazing. The restaurant was packed which resulted in waiting an hour for a meal.

Easy to miss, as it's located in the back of a gas station. It is quite small, so come in early or make a reservation if you want a seat. Regardless of the weird spot, this place is absolutely one of the best sushi places around. The rolls take a long while to come out, but it's worth it as you can tell they were meticulously made with the best ingredients.

One of the best sushi in town, family owned small business that treats you like family. Have patience it’s a small place hidden in gas station that serves quality food.

The cutest place. Best quality sushi i’ve ever had and I eat a lot of sushi. Everything on the menu is amazing and tastes so fresh. Also such a welcoming environment. GET THE HAND ROLLS!!

The food was fabulous. We were the first people inside & probably the last to be waited on. Then they completely left off and order & we had to wait forever. Service was sporadic.

Small sushi joint in a gas station venue that focuses on simple, high quality rolls and fish. Try the uni shot, for sure (sea urchin roe in a shot of sake with some fixins). I sat at the bar where the chef-owner chatted with me a bit about his culinary education and other experiences. A great, friendly place - recommend the otoro (super fatty tuna belly) which is fresh!

As evidenced by other reviews, this is one of the best sushi places in the area. It's a small dining room with about 10 tables and with only 2 servers it can be a little longer of a wait, but the quality and availability of options were definitely worth the wait. We had the gyoza, tuna tar tar, land and sea roll, spider roll, and four types of sashimi. Overall, everything was very delicious and we look forward to coming back!

Amazing sushi just where you wouldn't think to find it! Kinda wanna keep this little place quiet but they deserve to be talked about! Some of the best sushi we've ever had!

Easily the best sushi place in the Raleigh Durham area. It is definitely a hole in the wall restaurant since it's connected to a gas station, but don't let that turn you off. It is incredible! Very friendly and hard working staff. We had the miso soup, seaweed salad, rainbow roll, volcano roll, voodoo roll, and ocean delight roll. They were all so good! And we'll worth the price.

Really really good. Tiny inside, like many other places, the waitstaff is understaffed so be patient. Extremely nice service and best sushi in the area. They are soft open until they get their liquor license which is pending.

Never disappoints! I've been here several times and the quality is always excellent. A great gem here in Apex, and I never feel like I need to drive to Raleigh or Durham anymore for top sushi!
